chicago bulls on behalf of america. >> anytime. anytime. almost to "early start," i'm zoraida sambolin. >> and i'm john berman. thursday, march 28th, 5:00 a.m. in the east. we start with life on the edge, literally. a tense situation unfolding right now in washington state. a huge landslide destroying one home, threatening at least a dozen more. some residents were forced to evacuate by boat. it is a very, very nervous morning on whidbey island, 50 miles northwest of seattle. that's where we find dan sim then morning. dan, tell us what happened here. >> reporter: hey, john, people who live in this neighborhood describe what they thought was the sound of thunder, instead it was the ground crumbling beneath them. when it was all over you had 1,000 feet of hillside that had vanished. right now you have 35 homes that are either under evacuation or have been cut off from the rest of the island because a good portion of the roadway also crumbled. here's how a couple of neighbors

describe the situation. >> it was pretty scary, i got out there with i aflashlight and then just kept hearing rumbling and watching more and more of it fall away. >> the portion of it was always eroding but thatch of it, no, no. i lost 50 -- over 50% of my yard. >> the concern now is that more of this hillside could crumble but quite frankly, right now, there's really nothing that anybody can do about it. you just want to keep people safe, keep them out of this area. but one of the big points here, john, is that nobody has been hurt. >> is there any one thing, dan, that seems to have caused this landslide this time? >> reporter: right now, they're not saying or theyen have the figured it out. there has not been a significant amount of moisture, a lot of rainfall in recent days but we know in covering these events that the moisture can accumulate over time and the ground can get saturated. perhaps that's what may have

caused this. until you get engineers who come in and analyze things, we're not going to know for some time, john. >> the pictures are simply stunning, dan. is there any sense when or if these people will ever be able to go back to their homes? >> you know, that's a great question. i think ultimately it's going to come down to whether or not you can actually repair that hillside. you're talking about a tall order. as i said, 1,000 feet of that hillside is gone. the structural engineers, the geologists will have to come in here and evaluate if you can rebuild it. but short of doing that, i'm not sure anybody really wants to live over there and whether or not authorities would allow them to do so if you can stabilize the ground. >> dan simon, on whidbey island, thanks, dan. >> it's a murk that'll nobody was injured. >> the whole thing is just gone. new this morning, a colorado woman is accused of buying the

gun used to kill tom clements. the 22-year-old stevie marie vigil gave the gun to evan ebel, who is believed to have pulled the trigger. ebel was killed in a shootout with texas sheriffs last week. >> a show of support for south korea in an effort to keep north korea in check. u.s. military sending two b-2 stealth bombers to south korea to take part in annual military exercises. defense secretary chuck hagel also spoke with south korea's defense minister about boosting its anti-missile defense systems. the move comes after north korea cut off military -- a military hot line with the south, put its artillery forces on high alert and intensified threats to attack the u.s. and south korea. >> a few hours from now, prosecutors in connecticut will release new information in the sandy hook elementary school massacre. state police say much of what is contained in the documents being made public this morning is already known. but state police say there may be some new details there.

the families of the victims were briefed on the new release last night. happening right now, attorneys for blade runner oscar pistorius are fighting some of his conditions for bail. they say the track star should be allowed to go back home and to travel. not only that, they also want an end to a probation officer's supervision and require drug and alcohol testing. pistorius denies he planned the murder of his girlfriend, reeva steenkamp at his home. he said he shot her after confusing her for an intruder. and jared locke er loughner of documents released yesterday show a pattern of increasingly erratic behavior before the shooting. loughner's parents even took away his shotgun, disabled his car and asked him to get help. but nothing worked. he is now serving a life sentence without parole. turning to a new controversy in the trayvon martin case,

stemming from tweets. robert zimmerman is apologizing. piers morgan told him two tweets caught his attention, this one where he compares trayvon martin to one of the two suspects in the shooting of a georgia baby. facebook pics of 13-month-old antonio santiago's alleged killer and trayvon martin, uncanny. >> this one liberal media should ask if what these two black teens did to a woman and baby is the reason people think blacks might be risky. he now admits twitter was probably not the best forum to say this type of thing. >> and i don't think twitter is the place to make points about what you recall a year ago. because the recollections i have or that we haves aa family specifically are very different than what can be portrayed in 140 characters.

i realize those were controversial and offensive. i did publicly apologize for them. i don't think it was the right thing to do that way. >> the right thing to do that way. zimmerman says he was trying to make the point that the media has been dishonest in his portrayal of trayvon martin. >> coming up on "starting point" soledad tarks with george zimmerman's attorney and the attorney for trayvon martin's family. nelson mandela is back in the hospital this morning. the south african government released a statement saying the 94-year-old anti-apartheid leader is batting intin inting infection again. we are following all of the developments for us, live in johannesburg. we understand that this time he was actually rushed to the hospital for that lung infection. what can you tell us? >> reporter: well, zoraida, what the government has confirmed to us this morning is that nelson

mandela was admitted to the hospital at midnight, in between wednesday and thursday. is he there now at a location, the government is not disclosing. what that tells us is that there is some sort of medical issue that his 24-hour team of doctors which he enjoys around the clock, weren't able to help treat whatever his ailment was at that time. we know the government is confirming, it's this recurring lung infection. you may remember in december, nelson mandela was in fact air lifted from his rural home in the south of the country to the hospital to be treated for a lung infection and also have gal stones remo -- gall stones removed. he also went to the hospital for a follow-up. those comments are absent at this time. the fact that he was admitted at midnight, his staff wasn't able to tend to him and that the government is not saying this was a scheduled follow-up are reasons for concern. just an interesting note,

zoraida, nelson mandela famously spent 27 years in prison while struggling for freedom and equality but he also suffered from tuberculosis during that time. he's continued to have these respiratory issues, lung infections as time has gone on. he is 94 years old. so i think the south africans are quite concerned that this very fragile, very old icon is now not feeling well and in the hospital. >> we'll continue to check back in with you. thank you. a lot of people watching that this morning all around the world. >> the president there asking for the people of south africa and the entire world to pray for nelson mandela. >> indeed the entire world is. nine minutes after the hour. three quick-thinking police officers in ohio save a man from a burning truck and their heroic actions were all caught on tape. take a look at this. welcome back to "early start." 14 minutes past the hour. it is likely to be a few months before the supreme court actually issues a ruling. this morning, same-sex couples who are legally married may have a reason to be optimistic. the justices heard arguments yesterday on the constitutionality on the defense of marriage act or doma as it's known passed by congress in 199. at issue, whether legally married same-sex couples should enjoy the same benefit as heterosexual couples. cnn's joe johns has more from washington. >> reporter: same-sex marriage day two at the supreme court. edy windsor of new york who got hit with a tax bill for $330,000 when her wife died was on hand to hear what the justices had to say about her case. she's cautious but optimistic. >> i thought we were very respected. i think it's going to be good. >> reporter: questions from five

justices made it plain that the defense of marriage act which denies federal benefits from legally married same-sex couples has its critics on the courts because it treats gays and lesbians differently. >> two kinds of marriages, the full marriage and the sort of skim milk marriage. >> justice elena kagan tore into paul clement about what congress was thinking when it passed the law 17 years ago. >> i'm going to quote from the house report here. is that congress decided to reflect and honor a collective moral judgment and express moral disapproval of home sexuality. >> but perhaps an even larger problem for the defense of marriage act was that the federal government has started regulating as many as 1,100 spousal benefits in an area of the law that has traditionally been left to the states. justice anthony kennedy is seen by many as the potential swing vote. >> you are at real risk of

access roads completely wiped out. take a look at these pictures. some residents had to be evacuated by boat. others nervously watching their property just vanish, foot by foot. >> it was pretty scary. i got out there with a flashlight and hearing a rumbling and watching more and more of it fall away. >> the portion of it was always eroding. but that much of it, no, no. i mean, i lost over 50% of my yard. >> 33 homes were originally evacuated. last night a team of geologists reportedly allowed 15 of those home owners to return. a terrifying moment shows a security guard in china was swallowed up by a massive sink hole. the man can be seen in the foreground walking in the rain with an umbrella. the ground opens up and disappears. the chinese media reports that the sink hole is 50 feet deep, 16 feet wide.

people who live in the area point to tremors from a construction site nearby. >> oh, my goodness. all right. a new development this morning in the case of james holmes, the man accused of opening fire inside a colorado movie theater last july, killing 123 people a -- 12 people and injuring dozens. his attorney says holmes has offered to plead guilty and spend life in prison as long as prosecutors don't seek the death penalty. the next hearing in this case is on monday. there's lots of anger in the streets of chicago. hundreds of people school teachers and supporters shut down the center of the city last night, protesting the school district's consolidation plan that will close 54 schools at the end of the school year. they call it a safety issue. >> pamela brown is here with more on the protest and that consolidation plan. welcome to cnn. nice to have you this morning as well. >> great to be here. good morning. on the homes of a contentious

strike that shut down schools for more than a week, teachers and parents angry about the consolidation plan are butting heads once again with mayor rahm emanuel. more than 100 protesters were escorted away by police. >> reporter: hundreds of teachers, parents and students took the streets of the windy city by storm wednesday afternoon, dozens cited for civil disobediencdisobedience. parents and school employees say the cuts will impact some of the city's most impoverished neighborhoods. >> we need to protect our children to save our schools. >> reporter: protesters held signs saying keep your hands off our schools and school closing equals one-term mayor, while many teachers wore red in a showing of solidarity. >> i was at a school that's safe. i feel like none of them are safe. >> they should give the resources to the current schools, the neighborhood

schools, the real public schools. >> reporter: mayor rahm emanuel seems unwilling to negotiate and district says closing the 54 underenrolled schools, the largest school consolidation in u.s. history is necessary to deal with the looming $1 billion budget gap. >> having been the product of the civil rights movement and having done exactly as the people are doing today, i get. it's a part of the democratic process. and i respect it. >> reporter: school closures are nothing new but they're increasingly seen as a politically charged issue revolving around race and poverty. >> i think this is a message of we will not be moved from the all-negro spiritual. >> safety, children. security, children. >> reporter: beyond the expected teacher layoffs, many parents say they're also concerned about the added cost of transporting their child to a new school.

the city still hasn't released details of a transportation plan. meetings have to shall held before the board of education votes on the plan in lay may. >> thank you. >> great to be here. soledad will speak with barbara byrd bennett as well as karen lewis, president of the teachers union. that is at 8:30 eastern time. just a few hours from now, newly elected pope francis conducts a mass and performs a tradition that dates back to the time of jesus. but even with this ritual he's choosing his own path, washing the feet of prisoners at a youth detention center. talk to us about the significance of this mass and where he chose to have it. >> reporter: the significance, of course, dates back to the last supper of jesus the night before he was crucified when he washed the feet of his 12 disciples. it's an important religious event. pope francis as he has done

since becoming pope just two weeks ago is breaking with tradition. normally the pope conducts this service in a papal basilica and he usually washes the feet of 12 retired priests. this time, he's going to a simple prison on the outskirts of rome. he'll be washing the feet of 12 inmates, many aren't even catholic. in fact we know from the list we got from the prison that some come from egypt, morocco, tunisia, so they very well could be muslim. this is a radical break from tradition and this is part of what he said from the beginning during his inaugural mass when last week he said that we need to take care of the thirsty, the hungry and the prisoners. he's very much breaking from tradition and this is really only the latest. the day before yesterday we learned that he's not going to live in the spacious, luxurious

papal apartments but rather in a vatican residence. he doesn't wear those red shoes. he wears black shoes. he doesn't take his chauffeur-driven car. he takes the bus. this is a pope who definitely wants to do everything his way. zoraida? >> ben, do you think all this breaking with tradition will change the papacy? and even perhaps how people view the roman catholic church? >> reporter: well, he's only been pope for two weeks, let's keep in mind. his changes have been stylistic until now. but i can tell you here in rome, everybody is talking about pope francis or francesco as they call him here, very excited, they enthusiastic. they look at him as somebody who really is changing things. they look at italian politics and what a mess it is and he they say we wish we had somebody like pope francis running this

49 minutes after the hour. a lot going on. christine romans here with the headlines. a tense moment on whidbey island, 50 miles northwest of seattle. a massive landslide destroying one home and threatening at least a dozen others. many residents evacuated by boat. right now 17 houses are unreachable. the owners are hoping they don't wind up in the puget sound below. an attack like a nuclear war. that's how a security expert describes what's happening in

cyberspace. the ripple effects are being felt everywhere. the attack affects the web's infrastructure and has slowed down websites across the globe. ashley judd won't be running for senate in kentucky. the actress tweeting she can't run for office now because she needs to spend her time and energy on her family. she flirted with challenging republican mitch mcconnell in 2014. >> she would have been exciting for national democrats. there would have been a lot of money in the race, including her own. there are people in kentucky in the democratic establishment who felt she was too liberal to run right there. she has positions on mining that may have been against what a lot of people in kentucky want and think. there still may think there are democratic candidates interested in beating mcconnell. she may be back. this is not the end of politics at all. maybe she's eyeing a race two years down the line.

let's get started. first, it is a massive landslide leaving dozens of home owners in washington state literally living on the edge. a tense situation washington. one home already destroyed. dozens more are threatened now. some residents have been forced to evacuate by boat. no doubt it is a nail-biting time on whidbey island, 50 miles knot of seattle. that's whether we find dan simon this morning. dan, tell us what happened here. >> well, hi, zoraida. as you can imagine, a lot of this neighbor had has been sealed off, given the danger. we are standing in someone's drivew driveway. behind me is where part of this landslide occurred. obviously devastating for a lot of these people. initially you had 35 homes or so that were under an evacuation order or you had them at an area where part of the road actually crumbled away.

you had some really dramatic pictures there, as well. here's how a couple of neighbors describe the situation as it was unfolding. >> it was pretty scary. i got out there with a flashlight and kept hearing a rumbling and watching more and more of it falling. >> a portion of it was always eroding, but that much of it? no, no. i mean, i lost over 50% of my yard. >> reporter: this situation is still unsafe. the concern is that part of this, you know, landslide could continue to occur. this hillside is still unstable and crews are monitoring it very closely, zoraida. >> i was reading this morning that a lot of folks who live in this area say that they know that landslides are possible, but this is really huge. how come there are landslides in that area? >> reporter: well, they are common, although nobody can remember seeing anything like this. you know, i've been living on the west coast for a long time

and have covered a lot of these landslides and have never seen one this large. you know, in terms of why this happened, it's really going to be up to the engineers to come in and take a look. but you know, curiously, you didn't have a lot of rain in the days leading up to this event, if you will, but sometimes when you have, you know, a bad winter and you get a lot of moisture in the ground, it can accumulate over time and that can cause things. until the structural engineering come and take a look and the geologists, we're not going to know what caused this, zoraida. >> crazy. you can see a lot of homes right along the edge there as well. dan simon, thank you very much. new information this morning about the murder of colorado's prison chief. investigators have arrested 22-year-old stevie marie, she is accused of buying the gun that killed tom clement who was shot to death in his home last week. she bought it and gave it to evan able who pulled the trigger. he was killed in a shootout with texas sheriffs last week.

a show of support for south korea. in an effort to keep north korea in check, the u.s. military is sending two b-2 bombers to south korea to take part in annual military exercises. defense secretary chuck hagel spoke with top korea minister about boosting the anti-missile defense. it comes after north korea cut off a military hot line with the south but the military forces are on high alert. a few hours from from now prosecutors in connecticut will have an update in new information in the sandy hook massacre investigation. state police say much of what is contained in the documents being made public this morning is already known but state police say there may be some new details. the families of victims were briefed last night. attorneys for blade runner p piser to yus are challenging conditions for his bail.

he will deliver a decision in half an hour. they say the track star should be allowed to go back home and travel. not only that, they also want an end to a probation officer supervision and required drug and alcohol testing. pistorius denies he planned the murder of his girlfriend at his home. he said he shot her after confusing her for an intruder. developing story. former south african president nell sson man nell la rushed toe hospital for battling a lung infection again. live in johannesburg this morning, he was just in the hospital not too long ago for a lung infection. what is different this time? >> well, it's one of the reasons that this news is being met with an additional layer of concern. i can also tell you that we've just received some new information in to cnn. we've made contact with the

spokesperson for president jacob zuma and the spokesperson says when mandela was admitted to the hospital he was, in fact, conscious. so that little bit of extra information is just in to cnn and let's us know that he was conscious when he was admitted to hospital. as you say, he was also admitted to hospital last december, airlifted from his rural home in the south of the country to be treated for lung infection and eventually for gal stones as well which are removed. he spent 18 days in hospital. the government was very tight lipped about why he was there and the exact status of his condition. he was eventually released. just earlier this month, in fact, he had a to we low-up, a scheduled follow-up, the government tells us, at the hospital and was released without incident. it's quite concerning that he's had this previous bout with a lung infection, no just in december of last year, back in 2011, as well, and he seems to be taking the turn for the worse. another reason for concern is

that nelson mandela enjoys the care of a medical staff 24/7, around the clock with him, even with his home, his rural home in the south. one interesting note to put it in context is that while nelson mandela was struggling for democracy and struggling against s segregation he was imprisoned and also suffered from tuberculosis at that time. in a way, nelson mandela is a man who struggled through so much and brought social change but he personally seems to be suffering with this recurring lung infection. and we also have to consider that he is 94 years old. lung infection in the small hiccups along the road can be quite serious for a man his age. people close to nelson mandela tell us he is mentally slipping away. he is forgetting some of the people who struggled with him for freedom are no longer with us and he forgets people's names. . he is certainly an old man surrounded by friends and family and all of south africa effect

nately call him diva. >> errol barnett is in south africa. we will pray for mandela. >> yes, indeed. six minutes past the hour. new developments this morning about jared loughner, killed six people and seriously wounding congresswoman gabby giffords. the trove of investigative documents released yesterday shows a pattern of increasingly erratic behavior right before the shooting. loughner's parents even took away his shotgun. they disabled his car. and they asked him to get some help but nothing worked. and he is now serving a life sentence without parole. now to a new controversy in the trayvon martin case stemming by tweets from the brother of george zimmerman. robert zimmerman jr. is now apologize for his tweets. in one he compares trayvon martin to one of the two suspects in the t shooting of a georgia baby.

he wrote, quote, facebook pics of 13-month-old alleged killer and trayvon martin side by side. #uncanny. both teens are making on scene gestures in the photos. the caption says, a picture speaks a thousand words. another tweet, liberal media should ask if what these two black teens did to a woman and baby is the reason why people think blacks might be risky. robert zimmerman now admits it's probably not the best forum to express himself. >> i don't think twitter is the place to make points about what you recall a year ago because the recollections that i have or that we have as a family specifically are very different from what can be portrayed in 140 characters. i realize we're controversial in a sense and i publicly apologized for them. i didn't think it was the right way. >> what does that mean? >> that's a great question. he says, zimmerman does, he was

trying to make the point that he thinks the media has been dishonest in its portrayal of trayvon martin. coming up at "starting point," we will talk with mark omar a and benjamin crump. three police officers spring into action to save a driver who was seconds away from a fiery death. you're taking a look at that. the man's truck had burts into flames after crashing into a building. the cops used batons to smash open the windows. one officer used the knife to cut the driver's seat belt out and to pull him out to safety. that man was treated for smoke inhalation. burned to death. >> lucky man. >> incredible. nine minutes after the hour. all things must pass. including really long annoying things. the miami heat entered last night's game against the chicago bulls with a 27-game winning

welcome back to "early stat." it is all up to the justices now. yesterday dealt with the defense of marriage after doma passed by congress in 1996. at issue, whether legally married same-sex couples can enjoy the same federal benefit enjoyed by straight married coup couples. the high court appears to be leaning towards, yes. cnn's joe johns has more. >> reporter: same-sex marriage day two at the supreme court. edie windsor of new york who got hit with a tax bill of $330,000 when her wife died was on hand to hear what the justices had to say about her case. she's cautious but optimistic. >> felt very respected and i

think -- i think it will be good. >> reporter: questions from five justices made it plain that the defense of marriage act which denies federal benefits from legally married same-sex couples have its critics on the court because it treats gays and lesbians differently. >> two kinds of marriages. the full marriage and then this sort of skin milk marriage. >> reporter: justice elena kagan tore into them about what congress was thinking when it passed the law 17 years ago. >> i'm going to quote from the house report here, is that congress decided to reflect and honor a collective moral judgment and to express moral disapproval of home sex ali theity. >> reporter: perhaps an even larger problem is the federal government started regulating as many as 1100 spousal benefits in an area of the law that has traditionally been left to the states. justice anthony kennedy is seen by many as a potential swing

new this morning, financial troubled cyprus has finally reopened. they've been shut down. the rescue package taxed bank deposits and caused a run on atms as people scrambled to get their money before the government takes it from them. they adjusted that plan after, but still it is pretty draconian. we are are monitoring the situation in cyprus this morning. e ivan, any run on the banks this morning. >> no, the situation is pretty

calm, john. i mean, if you consider the banks have been close foder more than 12 days and the entire banking sector in this country is really in trouble, you know, there are a handful of pensioners here, far more journalists gathered around this bank of cyprus. but as you mentioned, it's draconi draconian. people kald can't pull out more than 300 euros from their bank accounts, maybe $400 approximately. and they're limited to the amount of money they can use with their credit cards outside of the country, so they can't take more than 1,000 euros of cash outside the country. these are all really strict measures that the government just imposed last night to try to keep the banking sector in this country from going down the toilet. john? >> what's the level of frustration like there, ivan? they've been dealing with the specter of this happening for two weeks. has it boiled over yet? >> reporter: i mean, we're not seeing by any means ryeiots in e

streets. this is a relaxed mediterranean culture and country. a lot of cypriots are telling me, we're going to get through this. it's a crisis, it's terrible. it's the worst thing we've seen since the turkish army invaded this island but we can get through this. everybody knows that life is going to change pretty dramatically here. people have to tighten their belts. the good times that people enjoyed here when this was a tax haven for everybody from russian billionaires to british pensioners, those days are pretty much over. a lot of people saying they're concerned they can't send their kids to study at universities overseas anymore, for example. >> it will have to be counting their cash almost every day. ivan watson inside cyprus this morning. thanks for being with us. christine romans is mindsing your business this morning. >> market finished mixed yesterday. still looking mixed because we're watching what ivan is watching there, the line to get money out in cyprus.

what that's going to mean for europe and what kind of risk that is for the u.s. here. ahead of a three-day weekend, i'm not expecting fireworks at the opening bell by any stretch of the manaimagination but ther some fascinating economic research i want to bring to you. new this morning, do you think your college degree was worth what you paid for it? have you looked around you and realized it takes a b.a. to sell jeans at the gap? you're right. research published by the national bureau showed skilled workers are taking lower paid jobs, college grads are taking jobs that don't require a college we degree. the whole ladder of occupation is moving down. the average cognitive task, basically the level of skill thought work that college grads are doing is plummeting, plummeting. check out this huge increase in the mid 1990s to 2000. dotcom boom. boom. what it takes. the amount of knowledge and education it takes to do your

job is declining. then the recession hit. it wipes out most of the highly skilled in ed ied innovative wo. the deskilling of the labor market. high skilled workers have moved down the occupational ladder and it began to perform jobs traditionally performed by lowerer skilled workers. less education, they're being pushed out of the workforce all together. it's so interesting hire. what i think is so interesting here is you've got all of these stem jobs, technology jobs. they're small. it's a small piece of the pie. and then there's everyone else rushing to get a college degree, paying a lot of money, in some cases for a degree that may not be very specific in the workforce and those folks are finding it takes a b.a. to sell coffee. for the people who used to sell dpeef and didn't have an education, they're being pushed out of the workforce. this is just one report by three authors. there's a lot of other data out there. economists are really trying to study what's happening here. how are we hollowing out the middle and what are we doing?

we're spending all of this money on college education and people are finding their way. i want to be very clear about something. i think you need a college degree. you absolutely need a college degree. this report finds if you don't have a college degree you're being bumped out. the question is, how much are we borrowing for it, how much are we spending for it, and are we being very strategic in the degrees we're getting and finds our place in the workforce. it's interesting. >> what is the one thing we need to know about our money? >> interesting foreclosure numbers. 414 days from the first missed payment to finally getting a foreclosure taken back by the bank, and new numbers from realty track showing that the foreclosure process is speeding up a little bit. foreclosure backlog is getting cleared up. that's a good thing. you want to wipe some of these foreclosures where no one has been living in the house, it's just been -- >> eyesore. >> you want to get through those. the foreclosure process speeding up a little bit. i thought it was interesting, 414 days.

>> a portion of it was always eroding, but that much of it? no, no. i mean, i lost 50 -- over 50% of my yard. >> so 33 homes originally evacuated. last night a team of geologists determined 15 of them were safe and allowed at least those owners to return. look at this. terrifying video shows a moment a security guard in china was swallowed up by that, a massive cinch hole. 25-year-old man can be seen very briefly in the foreground walking with an umbrella in the rain before the ground opens up and swallows him. chinese media reports the sinkhole is 52 feet deep, 15 feet wide. heavy rainfall may have been the factor in the formation of it. people who live in the area point to tremors from a construction site nearby. >> that is crazy. >> unbelievable. new developments this morning in a case of james holmes, the man accuse of opening fire inside a colorado movie theater last july killing 12 and injuring dozens. attorneys filed papers yesterday saying that holmes offered to plooet plead guilty and spend

his life in prison as long as prosecutors do not seek the death penalty. no word if prosecutors will accept that offer. the hearing -- the next hearing in this case is scheduled for monday. angry protest on the streets of chicago. hundreds of public schoolteachers and their supporters brought the downtown loop to a stand still last night. protesting the school's district consolidation plan that will close 54 schools at the end of the school year. the head of the teacher's jr. calls it a safety issue saying the children should go to school where they live, not in a different neighborhood. pamela brown is here with with more on the protests and its consolidation plan. pamela, good morning. >> good morning, john. on the heels of a contentious strike that shut down city schools forea week teachers and parents angry about the consolidation plan are butting heads once again with mayor rahm emanu emanuel. more than 100 protesters were escorted away by police. hundreds of teachers, parents,

and students took the streets of the windy city by storm wednesday afternoon. dozens cited for civil disobedience. showing their fierce opposition to mass school closures, parents and school employees say the cuts will impact some of the city's most impoverished neighborhoods. >> we need to protect our children to save our schools. >> reporter: protesters held signs saying keep your hands off our schools and school closings equal -- while many teachers wore red in a showing of solidari solidarity. >> i was in a school that safe but i feel none of them are safe. >> give the resources to the current school, the they were hood schools. >> reporter: mayor rahm emanuel seems unwilling to negotiate and the district says closing the 54 underenrolled schools the largest school consolidation in u.s. history is necessary to deal with the looming $1 billion budget gap. >> having been the product of the civil rights movement and having done exactly as the people are doing today, i get

it. it's a part of the democratic process and i respect it. >> reporter: school closures are nothing new, but they're increasingly seen as a politically charged issue revolving around race and poverty. >> i think this is a message that we will not be moved from the all negro spiritual. >> pray for our children, security for our children. >> reporter: beyond the expected teacher layoffs, many parents say they're also concerned about the added cost of transporting their child to a new school. >> the chicago public school system still has to hold three meetings for each school it plans to close. the board of education votes on the plan in late may and it is expected to pass. >> so i know that the city faces a huge financial crisis and education in particular. how is the mayor responding to all of this? >> well, right now the mayor is saying, look, the time for negotiations is over. we've held public hearings. it's time to move forward and

implement this plan. it appears to be a done deal. but i will say the teachers union does not appear to be giving up any time soon so this is a ga will likely continue. >> they're going to dig their heels in. the parents need answers. they need to know their children are going to be face and the transportation is really important. thank you so much. >> thank you. all right. later on "starting point" we will speak with barbara byrd-bennett and karen lewis. she is the president of the teacher's union at 8:30 eastern. it is no secret this fast food not always healthy food for your children, but even some restaurants with so-called healthy meals have their share of some calorie surprises on the menu. our cnn medical correspondent joins us right now. elizabeth, there's a new report that is pretty surprising. >> it is sure pricing, john. the sheer numbers, they took a look at 50 big restaurant chains and found 91% of them don't meet the nutritional guidelines of their own association, of the

national restaurant association. they don't meet those nutritional guidelines for kids. and, in fact, some of the meals have more than twice as many calories as a child is supposed to get, depending upon the age of the child. let me show you some of their worst offenders, john. let's start over here. over here we have a chili's meal which is pizza and fries and a chocolate milk. 1,120 calories. so 1120 calories. again, more than twice as much as some kids are supposed to be getting. if we move on to the next one, this is dairy queen which is chicken strips, fries, a dilly bar, ice cream bar, sauce and sort of a slushy kind of arctic drink. that has 1,027 calories, about the same. the one with the most calories in this little scenario here is this one here from applebee's which is grilled cheese, french fries, and a chocolate milk, and that's 1,210 calories, more than 1200 calories in one meal. and you don't even really think about it. you're serving this to your kid.

it is a ton of calories. we reached out to these three rest rapts and applebee's and chili's responded and they said, look, we have other options. you don't have to choose these items and we'll customize items for you. we reached out to the national restaurant association which has this program to encourage rest ra rants to have lower calorie options for kids. here's what they told us. they said that restaurants nationwide are providing innovative, healthful children's options to their younger guests. but what this report finds is, well, maybe not enough. john? >> 1200 calories, i don't think my kids eat that much in a week, elizabeth. but are there -- they mention there are other options out there. are there good options out there? >> you know, this report was pretty scathing on the restaurant industry. and they really said that only one restaurant has done a great job and they said that restaurant is subway. so i'll give you an example. this is a subway kid's meal. kids roast beef sub, 1% milk and apple slices is only 395

36 in atlanta. 34 in birmingham. we move up towards north areas like scranton as well as new york, 38 degrees and 34 degrees. so where are we going today? we're going to see temperatures getting close to seasonal. we will continue that even through the weekend. right now looking across parts of northeast, very quiet there. this is a nice change. notice just some very light sfloe snow flurry happening. new york city, you'll see a chance for a couple of showers or two. but you also see some sunshine out there, as well, especially as we head later in the day. areas like boston, full sunshine is a ridge of high pressure down towards the south and the same for the southwest. we will see a disturbance starting to get its act together just in time for the upcoming weekend. high temperatures today will be in the 50s, the 60s. really no areas are going to be below freezing. a lot of 70s down towards the south. as i said to you, rain coming into the weekend. and notice, it's going to be just in time for easter sunday. we'll see it from the midwest
