louisville/michigan tonight with the ncaa title on the line. >> go michigan! >> come on. >> go louisville! >> now you want both. >> i'm conflicted here. >> welcome back. >> thank you. >> welcome to "early start." i'm john berman. >> i'm zoraida sambolin. it's monday, april 8th. >> we start with breaking news, a frantic search for two small children buried when a dirt wall collapsed. it's now turned into a recovery effort. it started sunday afternoon, rescuers have been working around the clock digging by hand but they now fear the worst. a 6-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy were playing in a hole being dugout for the basement of a new home when the dirt wall gave way. after hours of digging this morning, rescuers say what had been a rescue effort is now a recovery effort. they dug down 20 feet with no sign of the children so far. we will bring you the latest as we learn more. >> a developing story, a

murdered american diplomat coming home from afghanistan today. most of us never heard of anne sm smedinghof before this weekend, barbara starr is live from the pentagon with the latest developments for us. good morning to you, barbara. >> good morning. everyone says this is a young woman who was doing exactly what she wanted to do, serving her country. >> 25-year-old foreign service officer anne smedinghoff volunteered to go to afghanistan. her family said she was doing the work she loved, trying to make a difference in the world. her father tom. >> we thought she was relatively safe in the embassy compound. she was always, you know,

finding projects and assignments that took her outside. that was what she wanted to do. that was what really drove her. >> reporter: on saturday she was killed in this attack when a suicide bomber smashed into her convoy. three soldiers and another civilian were killed. they were trying to deliver school books. her chicago neighborhood now decorated with flags and flowers. smedinghoff is believed to be the first u.s. diplomat killed since last september's attack in bengahzi, libya. secretary of state, john kerry, traveling spoke of the young woman he met on his recent trip to kabul. >> she was someone who worked hard and put her life on the line so others could live a better life. our hearts go out to anne's mother and father, with whom i spoke yesterday and to the two sisters and the brother who survive her. >> reporter: smedinghoff had been in afghanistan since july,

as her facebook photo shows, confidently traveling with troops around the country. >> anne and those with her were attacked by taliban terrorists who woke up that day not with a mission to educate or to help, but with a mission to destroy. >> reporter: of course our condolences to the families of the others who lost their lives in this attack. we're waiting for the pentagon to release their names. afghan civilians still paying a huge price, an investigation underway into a weekend air strike that may have killed several afghan children. >> we know the u.s. troops are scheduled to ship out of afghanistan by the end of next year. what about diplomatic and civilian aid? could attacks like this change our policy moving forward? >> at this point there's no indication of that. there's a commitment to try to continue with this type of work. you know, it will be very

difficult because right now the way it looks is security will be in the hands of afghan security forces, and that may be probl problematic in some areas. >> at 8:00 a.m. eastern, we will be joined by the parents of anne smedinghoff. some breaking news in the korean crisis, just moments ago, the north announced it is pulling all of its workers out of the kaesong complex it shares with the south. the north may be preparing for a possible nuclear test as early as this week. there are no unusual signs at this point, still a south korean lawmaker says sites are

preparing. also developing this morning, authorities in new hampshire are searching for a man who took hostages six years ago at one of hillary clinton's campaign offices. 52-year-old leeland eisenberg was reported missing from a halfway house in new hampshire. six years ago, he claimed to have a bomb and held several hostage force hours. four men trying to row from west africa to miami overtaken by a massive wave that actually capsized their boat. they're about 400 miles north of puerto rico trying to set a world record for human powered row across the atlantic when the water overtook them. the two canadians, two americans, got in a life raft and set off a locator beacon. the coast guard found them a few hours later. >> we had a plan in place for what to do if this happened. it was successful.

we are getting the guys home safe. but it's too bad we have to end now. >> the rowers were 73 days into the journey that began in senegal. >> 73 days. >> can you believe it? >> crazy. president obama heads to connecticut later today to continue his push for tougher gun control laws in the state that is still grieving from the sandy hook elementary school shooting. some possible movement on a deal to expand background checks for gun sales that include gun shows and online sales. two lawmakers are trying to break the stalemate. they would like to have a vote as early as this week. and funeral services this morning for legendary film critic roger ebert. the church service will be open to the public on a first come first serve basis. ebert's family says a memorial distribute will be held on thursday. ebert lost his long battle with cancer last week at the age of

70. john kerry is in jerusalem trying to kick start israeli/palestinian peace talks. this is the latest stop of his ten-day overseas trip. earlier this morning sirens sounded across israel and the country marked holocaust remembrance day. spring is here, you can finally feel it. new york could be close to 70 degrees today, but a different story somewhere else. >> out west, guys, not the same. blizzard conditions in the rockies and northern plains. jennifer delgado is live at the cnn weather center with this. good morning. >> good morning. it's hard to believe we are in spring and talking about winter conditions out across parts of the west. this will be happening through the central plains. some of these locations could see more than a foot of snow across the dakotas, nebraska. denver a possibility of six to 8

inches of snowfall. right now we're looking at all rain. you move up towards the north, you see that wintry precipitation moving through parts of northern wisconsin, even that far edge of michigan. what we're dealing with today, once we see more of this activity, severe storms setting up. this will effect areas like oklahoma, kansas, as well as into nebraska. out to the west, here comes the energy to provide our next big winter storm. you saw the numbers there, we're talking more than a foot. in addition to the severe weather, talking a multiple day event. this is for wednesday. this goes into tuesday. this is monday. it's going to be progressing over towards the east. that means even the possibility of a few isolated tornadoes. on the wider view, here's the set up to give you an idea. rain to the north, severe storms, the snow. temperatures are warming up. if you want to pick an area that will be winning with the weather, it's going to be the east as well as the south. in atlanta, very close to 80

he just got inducted into the basketball hall of fame. joe, how do you think these two teams match up? >> good morning to you. i think they match up great. we have the two best teams in the country facing off. the number one offense in the wolverines, against the number one defense in the louisville cardinals. the sense we got from louisville yesterday is that this team has been here before. they've been in the final four. they were in there last year. they came up short. they don't want to leave with that empty feeling again. rick pitino said in the presser yesterday that he feels this team is more united than before, given the fact they've been with each other so long and you have to throw in the kevin ware factor. as far as michigan goes, some said louisville is the team of destiny, i disagree. i think michigan is the team of destiny. when you think of how this team is turning it on now, beating

teams in the tournament like vcu, kansas, florida, syracuse, this team has "the fresh five" trying to do what the fab five did 20 years ago. >> let's talk about kevin ware, the louisville player we watched as his leg was broken, which was horrible. what is the latest on his recovery? >> we know it's going to be about 12 months, doctors say, until he can get back on a basketball court, which is incredible if you had seen the video or you would like to unsee the video. but he's with the team. when they flew into atlanta on wednesday night. he was with the team the last couple of days, on the sidelines with them when they played wichita state. there was one point, guys, in the game against wichita state where louisville was down by 20 points, ware got up on the crutches, hobbled over to the team huddle and gave these guys a pep talk and said let's do this. the guys said we looked at ware

for anything. >> the hikers went missing during an easter afternoon hike at the cleveland national forest. they called police for help but their cell phone battery died before authorities could track them. before making the call, cendoya remembers a spur of a moment decision to climb a mountain. it was a decision that almost claimed his life. we were expecting a helicopter that never showed up. i told her it's pitch black if we don't get out of here, we'll die. >> reporter: the doctor who treated him said cendoya is from amnesia. >> he has evidence of suffering blunt force drama, probably from a fall. which can explain his amnesia from the event. he is recovering well, probably because of his good, physical makeup and his youth.

profits expected to soar this year, but it may be at the expense of our comfort. customer complaints are up 20%, according to the latest report. united airlines the worst offender again, taking in more than four complains per 100,000 customers. southwest has the fewest number of complaints. fliers are mostly griping about tight seats, crowded planes, customer service, but on-time arrivals improved for 8 of the 14 airlines in the ratings. if you wanted to get somewhere on time, hawaiian airlines is tops for time limits, and lost luggage is at a four-year low. >> because nobody is checking bags anymore. >> american eagle came in last. people are saying they're mickimick i making millions of dollars in

6-year-old girl and a 7-year-old boy could have survived that. they were playing in a hole at a construction site when the dirt wall gave way. the public information officer with lincoln county emergency management is on the phone with us this morning. thank you for joining us. we know you're busy. we understand the workers have been digging all night. at one point we heard they had gone down more than 20 feet with no sign of the children. where does this stand right now? >> right now, with this -- just like you said this is a systematic, slow, tedious process to get to these children. we have to go down layer by layer through the dirt to try to get down to the children. the efforts have been ongoing overnight, they will continue until we can bring closure to this family from this tragic incident. >> let's backtrack a bit. woe we're watching pictures of the recovery effort that's underway.

we see a big black hole. can you explain how the children got there? if you have details on that. >> right now the didn't is in its infancy from the standpoint of an investigative stance. the local sheriff's department will be conducting the investigation, so they will be the ones that will be able to answer the circumstances surrounding how this incident occurs. right now we are concentrating on recovering these two innocent children's bodies from this situation that they're in to get them back to their parents so they can have a proper burial. >> we can only imagine how difficult this must be for everyone involved in this search. what kind of manpower is being devoted to try to find these two little kids? >> right now we're looking at approximately 75 rescuers actively working on the scene. and those are rescuers from all around the surrounding areas and from the surrounding counties

that are coming in and helping the crews here from lincoln county. you're right. it's tough on the family members but also tough on the rescuers. whenever they go out to an incident they're used to going and making a bad situation better. this is one of those situations where it's out of our control, and we can't fix it. so, it has taken its toll on the rescuers as well. a lot of these guys have children of their own that are young, it hits home. >> we certainly wish you well. we really appreciate you taking the time to speak with us. good luck with that. dion burleson, thank you. 32 minutes after the hour. new developments in the korean crisis. north korea announcing within the last hour it is pulling all of its workers out of the kaesong industrial complex that it shares with the south. pyongyang says it may shut down

33 minutes past the hour. with the senate showdown nearing over guns, the president is starting an all-out push to put pressure on congress now. later today he will be in connecticut where lawmakers just pushed tough new laws requiring stricter background checks. more from brianna keilar. >> reporter: the president is heading to connecticut where the governor just signed some of the nation's toughest gun laws, requiring universal sabackgroun checks and imposing limits on the number of bullets in a magazine. the president will again say that lawmakers in washington have an obligation to the 20 children killed there. >> every senator will get to vote on whether or not we should require background checks for anyone who wants to purchase a gun. >> reporter: despite polls showing 90% of americans support universal background checks, even getting that vote is increasingly uncertain. republican senator rand paul is leading a growing group of

republicans threatening to block any vote. a total of 13 signing on to this letter to senate democratic leader harry reid saying any new gun restrictions would violate the second amendment. >> they deserve a simple vote. >> they deserve -- they deserve a simple vote. >> white house officials respond by saying every member of congress applauded the president's call for a vote at the state of the union, with newtown families looking on. but officials won't say whether the president would sign a watered-down bill without background checks. >> we won't make predictions here. >> reporter: the looming question remains, can president obama win the gun control battle? he kicks off a week-long white house campaign joined by vice president joe biden and even first lady michelle obama. brianna keilar, cnn, washington.

connecticut senator richard blumenthal will be among those listening to the president's speech at university of hartford. he will join us later at 7:30 p.m. eastern. rick warren's church grieving with the pastor over the suicide of his younger son. 25-year-old matthew warren apparently shot himself over the weekend after a struggle with depression. the sermon on sunday at the saddleback church was called "surviving tough times." it was planned before matthew's death. boaters from key west fr, flori florida, are asked to be looking out for a sailboat that may have two young boys. a father broke into the house and took the two young boys.

it sounds like science fiction, but nasa has plans to capture an asteroid and place it in orbit around the moon. florida senator bill nelson says the mission is part of president obama's new budget plan. nasa would first catch the asteroid with a robotic spacecraft, and then tow it back towards earth. this is real. it would be placed in a stable orbit around the moon. nelson says the asteroid could be used for research, mining, developing technology for future deep space missions that would be cool, i guess. millions are in the path of a spring blizzard that's on the way. jennifer delgado has the who, when, where and why from the cnn weather center in atlanta. >> why is right. everybody wants the warm weather, right now it's all in the east and and the south. the west is suffering. we have winter warnings and

advisories in place for 16 states. winds will be picking up later into the evening. some of these locations, not even far away from denver, could see a foot of snowfall. it's not going start until later this evening, once we get more of that cold air wrapped in. right now mainly looking at some rain, you can see a line making its way through st. louis, that wintry mix for areas including wisconsin. what we're dealing with today is the potential for severe storms to develop this will be a multiple-bay event. we're talking today, tomorrow, wednesday. late tuesday into wednesday things will get active. we will see some wind gusts up to 50 miles per hour to 60 miles per hour this will effect an area from los angeles, phoenix, towards mexico and texas.

we begin this hour with breaking news a recovery effort is underway in north carolina where authorities belive two young children were killed when a dirt wall collapsed on top of them. it started late sunday afternoon in rural lincoln that was being the basement of a new home. the dirt wall there gave way. a short time ago we heard from the lincoln county department of emergency management. >> this is a very systematic and slow, tedious process to try to get to these children. we have to go down layer by layer through the dirt to try to get down to the children. the efforts have been ongoing overnight, and they will continue until we can bring closure to the family from this tragic accident that has occurred. the incident is in the infancy from a standpoint of an investigative stance. the local sheriff's department will be conducting the investigation, so they will be the ones that will be able to answer the circumstances

surrounding how this incident occurred. right now, we are concentrating on the recovering these two innocent children's bodies from this situation that they're in. to get them back to their parents so they can have a proper burial. >> we want to get more now from the scene, we're going to hear from andrew dowd from our affiliate wfoc. >> one fire official told me it's like trying to find a needle in a haystack. they only have a general idea of where these children are buried. crews have been working to find the missing 6-year-old girl and 7-year-old boy all night. the two became trapped after dirt collapsed on them around 6:00 last night. it's not clear this morning how that happened. from the air we can get a better look at the area search crews are working in. you can see that large, dirt hole which we're told is the foundation for a construction project. officials haven't said if the two children are related. but we know the father of one of the children is who called nooin

one one. i'm andrew doud reporting. >> one nient past the hour here. new developments in the korean crisis. north korea announcing just over an hour ago it is pulling all its workers out of the kaesong industrial complex it shares with the south. cnn's jim clancy is live with the latest on these mounting tensions. what can you tell us? >> well, zoraida, as expected the north put the blame on the u.s. and south korea saying it was their move. it was their affront to the dignity of north korea that caused this decision to be taken. but 53,000 of their workers are going to be pulled out, they say. but they hedged their bets. think used the term temporarily suspend the manufacturing operations here at the kaesong joint industrial complex, which leaves the door open for a reversal at some point. but for now it would appear that the 500 or so south korean managers and supervisors, specialists, if you will, in manufacturing, are also going to be leaving the complex, and it

will be completely shut down. now this is going to cost some money for the south koreans. but for the north koreans it's going to be the loss of really what has been reliable source of hard currency. a lot of people hope that they could prevent this from happening. this is the only symbol that there is, a real cooperation between north and south, and tonight, it looks like it's going to be shut down. zoraida? >> jim, there is some confusion around north korea's nuclear test site. are there any signs that the country is planning another test? >> well, this came from the unification minister. he made some comments about seeing activity had been observed around that north korean nuclear test site, quite close to the chinese border in the north of the country. and some people assume that that meant that they were preparing perhaps for another nuclear test that's been clarified now. no, they're not. but it has been ongoing activity since the first test that was conducted back in february.

the latest test was conducted back in february. meantime south koreans still on watch waiting for that medium-range missile or missiles that may be launched like an exclamation mark behind all of the rhetoric that's been going around the peninsula, as early as wednesday. zoraida? >> all right, jim clancy live in seoul, south korea for us. thank you very much. a tragic story this morning. an american hero coming home from afghanistan today, in a casket. anne smedinghoff and four other americans died saturday. the 25-year-old state department worker from chicago was delivering books to schoolchildren in southern afghanistan when a suspected taliban suicide bomber slammed into her convoy. barbara starr live at the pentagon right now with the latest developments. good morning, barbara. >> good morning, john. well, her family says she was doing exactly what she loved to do, serve the country. 25-year-old foreign service officer anne smedinghoff volunteered to go to

afghanistan. her family said she was doing the work she loved, trying to make a difference in the world. her father tom. >> we thought she was relatively safe in the -- in the embassy compound. she was always, you know, finding projects and assignments that took her outside, and that was what she wanted to do. that was what really drove her. >> reporter: on saturday she was killed in this attack when a suicide bomber smashed into her convoy. three soldiers and another civilian were killed. they were trying to deliver schoolbooks. her chicago neighborhood now decorated with flags and flowers. smedinghoff is believed to be the first u.s. diplomat killed since last september's attack in benghazi, libya. secretary of state john kerry, traveling, spoke of the young woman he met on his recent trip to kabul.

new developments in the rescue of two teenagers in the mountains of southern california. they spent three harrowing nights lost in the woods b batleing injuries, even has use naturing. now one of them tells nick valencia exactly what happened. >> i knew i was going to die. >> reporter: after five days in the hospital, two days longer than he was lost in the wilderness, rescued hiker nicholas cendoya talked about his near-death kerns. >> i'm going to be honest with you, i was seeing tigers. i thought tigers were talking me like raccoons, everything. i just wasn't scared. i had a stick sharpened ready for anything. >> reporter: cendoya and his hiking companion kyndall jack went missing during an afternoon easter sunday hike in southern california's cleveland national forest. they called police for help but their cell phone battery died. cendoya says one of the last thing he remembers is a spur of the moment decision to climb a mountain. it was a decision that almost cost him his life. >> we were expecting a

recover the bods of two young children who were buried when a dirt wall collapsed. the 6 and 7-year-old were cousins, playing in a hole that was being dug out for the basement of a new home yesterday when the dirt wall just gave way. we're going to get the latest from richard devane from our affiliate wcnc. >> we're seeing a little bit more activity out here. i'll tell you god monday morning. there have been a shift change. some crews are coming in. some crews are going out. just about 10, 15 minutes ago, i was walking up the road. spoke to a couple. it was the brother of the father of one of those kids. he said right now the family is trying to deal with all of this. they thanked the public for their respect of their privacy and also for their prayers. we can tell you that as you said yesterday, as we look at this scene right here that the police -- the emergency workers have said that they were trying to save the children. but then they made that grim

announcement last night that this was now a recovery effort. that's after hours of frantic digging, and hoping on sunday afternoon, after those two cousins were trapped under loads of dirt. now this all happened when a 7-year-old boy and a 6-year-old girl played in a large hole that was dug as part of some sort of home construction project. the support walls apparently gave way, trapping the two beneath at least 10 feet of dirt. emergency workers tried to save the kids using their hands, shovels and eventually larger equipment but around 9:00 last night they realized that there was nothing they could do. >> 75 rescue workers were told on hand trying to recover those bodies. our thanks to richard devane. we're going to have more on developments as they come in. the body of an american hero is returning home today. 25-year-old u.s. diplomat anne smedinghoff of chicago was killed along with four other americans. this happened on saturday, when a suspected taliban suicide bomber slammed into her convoy

the south from entering the plant, which lies just inside its border. >> battle over gun control heats up on capitol hill this week with president obama pushing for tougher background checks yet again. later today, the president will be in connecticut, where lawmakers have just passed tough new laws calling for stricter background checks. cnn's brianna keilar has the story. >> reporter: the president is heading to connecticut, where the governor just signed some of the nation's toughest gun laws, requiring universal background checks, and imposing limits on the number of bullets in a magazine. speaking not far from the scene of the newtown shoogt, he'll again say lawmakers in washington have an obligation to the 20 children killed there. >> every senator will get to vote on whether or not we should require background checks for anyone who wants to purchase a gun. >> reporter: but despite polls showing 90% of americans support universal background checks, even getting that vote is increasingly uncertain.
