in the room with him. >> this morning we're learning more about what drove that gunman to do it. new this morning on the one-year anniversary of george zimmerman's arrest in the shooting of trayvon martin. his mother penned an open later calling it the day the justice system failed. a huge tiger shark steals his catch, the whole thing caught on camera. it's thursday, april 11th. "starting point" begins right now. our "starting point" this morning, right now a powerful storm sweeping east after causing fierce tornadoes. the first one hit around 8:00 p.m. in hazelwood, missouri. debris in the streets, trees top tomorrowled over. missouri's governor declared a state of emergency. then in arkansas, a twister traveled 30 miles through van buren county. that's about 75 miles north of

little rock. at least 33 homes and a popular church were wrecked there. cars just tossed off the highway. four people injured. luckily no deaths have been reported. it's mostly a rural area. still, nerves, definitely frayed this morning. so let's bring in samantha mohr. still plenty of activity out there this morning. who is seeing the worse of it? >> things quieted doin down a little bit overnight. we anticipate things to get active again once we get daytime heating. look at the wintry weather, maybe from the northern plains. could see a half foot of snow in minneapolis by the time we get through tonight. a lot of lightning in southeast texas. that's a real problem this morning. with all of that electricity in the air and stretching on up into the tennessee valley as well. some of these storms have dropped, some two to four inches of rain. eastern illinois, danville, champagne, down into northwestern mississippi. we have flood warnings in place. do be careful, especially if you're driving in the dark.

it's hard to tell how deep that flood water is. again, under the gun today. we're expecting to see some, oh, 43 million people effected by potential severe weather. so that means lexington, nashville, birmingham, atlanta, down into tallahassee as the day progresses here. and, of course, we are in tornado season, typically in the south for march through may. as you compare this year to the past six, we're actually running about half of where we should be. normally around 325 tornadoes. this year just 163. i have a feeling we're going to be adding to this tally as the day progresses. christine, john? >> all right, thank you. we'll keep watching. while you were sleeping, a really big rae recall. vehicles made by toyota, honda, nissan, mazda, recalled because of an issue with the airbags that could starts a fire. shannon travis is live from washington. shannon, this is a big recall. what are the details? >> this is the huge recall over

a problem that could cause injuries. four japanese automakers are recalling 3.4 million vehicles. now, the fear is potential airbag defects. let's take a look exactly at who is recalling what. toyota says it's recalling 1.7 million cars worldwide. among them, john, many cars driven by our viewers, corolla, matrix, camry models. honda is recalling 1.1 million, nis is a 480,000. and mazda, 45,000. now, we want to note that most of the recall cars appear to be from 2001, 2002, and 2003. as for the problem in these effected vehicles, honda specifically says the passenger front airbag inflaters could deploy with too much pressure. obviously that could cause injuries. let's be clear, though, honda says, thus far, it is not aware of any injuries or deaths caused by this airbag defect. toyota says it has heard of airbag malfunctions but no

injuries. so it looks like these automakers are doing this recall out of an abundance of caution. all four of these automakers all purchased their airbag systems from the same manufacturer called tacada. john, take a look at your makes and models because these are some really popular vehicles. shannon travis, thanks. hostage drama in suburbia atlanta that ended with a gunman dead and four firefighters rescued by a s.w.a.t. team. police say the suspect placed a fake emergency call and when firefighters arrived, he held them hostage. demand they turn his utilities back on. that's when this strange situation in georgia got ugly. cnn's martin savidge has the latest for us. >> good morning. a lot of questions being asked in this subdivision. is it possible that the homeowner in danger of losing their home may have somehow been pushed over the edge? drama went on for hours but it ended in seconds. we know that firefighters

routinely run toward danger, but not this. >> when we maidenry into the home they were taken hostage by him. >> reporter: it began 3:40 wednesday afternoon. firefighters near atlanta were called to what they thought was a man having a heart attack. this is radio traffic from one of the five firefighters taken hostage. >> we are in a situation where we have a -- an armed person. >> reporter: the gunman began making demands. >> and he is requesting certa certain -- certain utilities to be turned back on at his house. and he is armed, and we are in the room with him. >> he's going through some financial issues and the power was turned off along with the cable and cellphone. >> reporter: about 30 minutes into the ordeal, one of the five

hostages was released. then around 7:30 p.m., police moved in. a loud bang, then volleys of gunfire. >> it got to a point where we believed their lives were in immediate danger, and our s.w.a.t. team made the decision to go in there and neutralize the situation. >> reporter: neighbors who knew the man didn't expect anything like this. >> he was really nice. maybe a little bit too nice, i don't know. i mean, he seemed like a normal guy. >> reporter: the gunman was killed. one police officer was injured. and the firefighters suffered only minor injuries. >> we're just relieved that, for us, our firefighters are going to go home safe to their families. >> reporter: you can also bet though that a lot of fire departments, a at of emts are going to study what happened here in georgia and wondering if they're going to have to change their practices when they respond to an emergency and what could the impact be on saving lives. christine? >> thank you. >> we said there's a lot going

on this morning. let's go to the crisis in the korean peninsula. japan, south korea, and the u.s. are on high alert as more rhetoric released on north korean television. jim clancy has been watching tv all morning from seoul. good morning, jim. >> good morning again, john. you know, we look at this situation. we are waiting and watching for a possible -- potential multiple missile launch by north korea, including at least one medium range missile cad the musudan that has the capability of reaching out as far as guam and hitting u.s. bases there. this is expected only to be a test firing. meantime, more fiery rhetoric combing from the north, this time from the committee of the peaceful requlun unification fr fatherland. it attacks the south for what it says has been their attitude, accusing the north of propaganda. they say the south is in panic, the whole region is in panic,

george zimmerman has been arrested and charged with murder. to mark the occasion, zimmerman's mother gladys wrote an open letter to the public. quote, april 11th, 2012, will be forrer remembered by the zimmerman family as the day that justice system failed us as americans and as a consequence, an innocent man was arrested for a crime he did not commit, solely to placate the masses. the letter comes two weeks after zimmerman's brother robert zimmerman jr. apologized for some controversial postings on twitter. in one he posted a picture of martin, alongside a photo of 17-year-old elkins, one of the two teenagers charged with killing a baby in georgia. president obama reaching across the aisle and breaking bread with republican senators at the white house. this all happened last night. among the gop heavyweights attending, marco rubio of florida, susan collins of maine, and lamar alexander of tennessee. the menu consisted of steak and

sauteed vegetables. the agenda included budget cuts, immigration reform, and gun violence. republican senator johnny isaac son of georgia helped coordinate that dinner and called the talks very productive. but will there be a second round? we will ask him when he joins us live in the next half hour of qu "starting point." and dillon quick will make his first appearance today. 14 students were injured before police took the 20-year-old quick into custody. harris county sheriffs said quick told investigators he had fantasieies about stabbing peop since he was 8 years old and he had been planning tuesday's attack for some time. in a new d.a. getting ready to take over in kaufman county, texas. rick perry appointed judge early norville wiley. still, there are no arrests in

market. >> sam has such a way with words. if we get that 3% gain it would be enough to put the dow above 15,000. stovall also told us investing in the market is like white water rafting. don't try to time the decline, just know it's probably coming. he said it shouldn't be too painful. for now, the path of least resistance has been higher on stocks. >> don't get too exhausted. >> baseball analogies. i'll bring those later. >> 15% increase for the s&p this year, that's huge. >> something. it is. you would take that over two years, that kind of a gain. we've already had it in the first quarter. >> i would take a gain, period. back to our top story. tornadoes touched down in a nation's heartland. in arkansas, a twister shredded a path 30 miles wide through three towns in van buren county. that's about 75 miles north of little rock. nearly three dozen homes were damaged. several vehicles overturned there in a popular church simply wrecked.

at least three people were injured. marcy manly is with our affiliate in arkansas. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. to say the damage here on the ground is substantial would be an understatement. the dark is misleading and deceptive as far as how bad it is. this was a home. that it want you to take into consideration that there are no walls, no roof. those are the steps leading to the front door that is simply no longer there. pieces of people's lives are spread all across the ground, just disprecioursed up and down. question have keyboards, bassinets, metal just disbursed in a thrown case of devastation. i don't know how else to describe it. this community is rocked by this storm. and that is what it looks like on the ground. but even up in the air you can see that this storm hit heavily. metal is wrapped around limbs. trees are snapped like

the national rifle association, forged a compromise on background checks for gun purchases. manchin visibly touched by newtown families when he met with them on capitol hill. the legislation would require a background check on purchases at gun shows and on the internet. but would exempt private transactions. it would require states and the federal government to provide records on criminals and the violently mentally ill to the national background checks system. but kit pass a republican congress? >> many of them are looking carefully at the legislation, but i don't know in the end how many will support it. >> reporter: many gun owners are not convinced. >> none of these laws will stop crime. the criminals will just go on getting their guns like they always have. >> reporter: while the measure is far from the assault weapons ban the president pushed for after the sandy hook shootings, some of the parents of children killed say it's a first step. >> what i have seen here is people working to the on both sides to try to do something to

welcome back. i'm john berman. >> i'm christine romans. the parents accuse of kidnapping their own sons and sailing off to cuba will make their first appearance in a florida courtroom this morning. >> josh and sharyn hakken face a litany of charges. cuban officials handed them over to u.s. authorities yesterday. the boys are now back with their grandparents. cnn blackwell is live outside the courthouse in tampa. what can we expect this morning in court? >> the hakkens for the first time are going to hear this loose list of charges against them but they will not be specifically in the courtroom. they're going to be in the jail where they've been for more than 24 hours. this is going to happen via closed-circuit television. josh what and sharyn hakken,

waking up in a florida jail facing charges of kidnapping and child neglect after a week on the run. 2 and 4-year-old son, chase and cole, are back with their legal guardians, their gand grandparents, grateful to the authorities that ended their week long nightmare. >> and the thousands of people who said the prior prayers and out to try to help to find our grandchildren. >> reporter: the day after the hakkens lost their parental rights in connection with the father's arrest and erratic behavior in 2012, deputies say joshua hakken broke into the hauser's home in tampa. patricia hauser called for help. >> my son-in-law just kidnapped my two grandchildren. they've been in my state custody. >> reporter: investigators learned josh what hakken purchased this boat and they were heading south. >> state department received information that they were actually in cuba.

>> reporter: cnn's patrick in a va va went to a marina popular with americans and, sure enough, found the boat and the hakken family. >> i saw a boy playing on the top deck and a man with a large beard. comes out. i say, hey, are you josh? he said, yes, who are you. i said, i'm from cnn. gets very angry. goes in the boat. >> we did set up a team that consisted of local, state, around federal agents that actually departed the tampa area and went to cuba and actually met with the authorities there. >> reporter: the family was taken into custody. the boys and their parents separated on the flight back to florida. expedient and rare cooperation on extradition between two countries with an inkconsincons history. the boys now settling into a more familiar home. their parents, at least for now, confined to a new one.

victims. the arkansas department of health is looking for some 100 patients whole treated by the late dr. william jared. they're saying some of the drugs that he used on his dental patients may have been contaminated with infectious material he reportedly had a substance abuse problem and may have actually used some of the name ones full of the sedative demerol on himself that he used on patients. the department is recommending patients who saw dr. jared between november 2011 and february 2012 be screened for infections. and was it a ghoulish prank or more mysterious? a package with a goat head delivered to wrigley field yesterday. it was addressed to the cubs owner. police are calling this an intimidating package. goats are part of cubs lore. it dates back to the world series when tavern owner brought his goat to wrigley and he was tossed out. that is when he cursed the cubs, saying they would never win a

world series game at wrigley field, and they haven't. and watch this. as officers subdue a 62-year-old man outside santa barbara. it took seven bean bag shots and seven taser to get him on the ground. authorities say he was walking on the 101 freeway and pulled a knife on a deputy who went over to investigate what was happening. the man will charged with assault, that is when he is discharged from the hospital. john and christine? >> thanks, zoraida. 35 minutes after the hour. time for round two of dinner diplomacy. last night president obama vited 12 republicans to the white house to discuss whatever was on their minds and have some steak apparently. it's part of aer isries that is meant to bring both sides of the aisle close together on the deficit crisis, guns, immigration. >> senator, a republican from georgia who organized the white house dinner. he joins us now. lots on the agenda. i mean, tell me, what was --

whfs the bulk of the conversation about? what did you talk about? >> well, the bulk of the conversation was driven by the members of the president allowed to come. most of the conversation was about debt, deficit, our growing national debt, our fiscal policy and reforming entitlements. it was a very meaningful three-hour discussion, free flow exchange of ideas from both sides. >> during the first meeting the members came out and said they were struck by the fact the president really seemed willing to listen. what was your take on the tone in the room? >> well, just to verify that, the president opened the dinner by saying, i'm here to listen to you. i want to go around the room and have every one of you give me your input and i'll respond. he did. he didn't take notes he responded specifically about items we brought up. we talked about common interests and common ground and differences. we did what you have to do to build a foundation to solving problems. >> let's talk about one area. ari fleischer tweeted the president is getting more credit than he's giving for doing

something about social security. he's talking about attaching cpi to social security. he's wrong on taxes, ari says, but good for him on social security. what do you think? >> people need to understand about 2037 social security payments are going to be reduced by over 25% because of the declining trust fund. if we don't fix the calculation for the formulas in the colas in terms of social suitity and medicare, those benefits are not going to be there, not just for our children and grandchildren but for some of us. it's important that he address that difficult subject. and it's also important to understand we can afford to do it now and solve the problem in the out years but the longer we wait, the more difficult it's going to be on contemporary beneficiaries. >> so many issues in front of the congress, perhaps none bigger than the issue of gun control. manchin and toomey came out with their plan on background checks. what's your general sense of their proposal? >> candidly, i spent most of my time yesterday preparing for the den we're head last night that

we are talking about so i have not read the details yet but i'm going to a meeting at 10:00 where it's going to be discussed. i think there will be a motion today or a motion to proceed on which will pass and move to the gun bill probably tuesday morning of next week. >> do you think this measure, limited background checks, not universal, do you think it has a chance of getting through the senate? >> i really don't know. it's hard to handicap because there's no ambivalence in the senate about the gun issue. it's a very clear issue that's always been discussed almost every single year. it may be very difficult to pass. it may not be. i just haven't seen the details. >> let me ask you about immigration. there are so many things you guys are working on right now. that was on the agenda. "the new york times" reporting the gang of 8 agreed on a deal on immigration reform. it would delay a path to citizenship until after border security and verification of border security. where are you guys on this? >> border security is the absolute key. it's a non-starter if you don't do that. but i know the group's been

working hard. i had a good conversation with marco rubio yesterday. i believe he was beginning to feel better and better about the security on the border as the first predicate for reform. there's no question that immigration reform is an issue we must address. we've got to get out of the amnesty business and into the citizenship business where people are doing it the right way, not the wrong way. and we've got to get a way to get the high skilled workers and form workers into so our state to be able to pick our crops and help develop our technology. >> a lot of work to be done. thank you, senator. nice to see you this morning. the nation's heartland waking up to a path of destruction. in arkansas a twister shredded a path several miles long through three downs in van buren county, north of little rock. three dozen homes were damaged. several vehicles over turned on the highway. and a popular church was simply wrecked. at least three people were injured there. macri manley is live in van buren, arkansas. good morning.

>> good morning. we are in van buren county. this is near the area one of the hardest hit. so far reports are getting in that damage to 30 homes, 6 homes completely wiped out. i'm going to show you the damage we're talking about when we're talking about damages to homes. that is or was a house. the walls are missing. the roof obviously gone. the foundation completely shaken. and pieces of people's lives are now scattered all across the area up and down highway 65. obviously you've got the normal everyday aspects of living, but then you have things that tell us about the people who live here from a keyboard and harpsichord that we found also to different aspects like a baby ba bassinet and things like this, children's books, children's pictures strewn across the area. that really is the heartbreaking part of not knowing how this really will impact people as the sun comes up. we'll start to get a better idea of that.

as the missile crisis continues to unfold. high alert this morning. a u.s. official telling cnn, north korea raised one missile to an upright firing position and test launch could be immine imminent. jim clancy live from seoul. do we know anything about a possible missile launch here? >> you know, barbara starr, coming out with the report from the u.s. official would indicate that perhaps north koreans were checking, trying to make sure everything was right. remember, they sell this missile technology around the world to countries like iran. they want to make sure this comes up this is essentially, christine, an advertisement for them. they will be very careful. the latest we have, we expect a multiple missile launch, and they should all be tests. quite a fireworks show. christine. >> the missile is the farther range than previous missiles launched. so does that make this more concerning?

way to doing something truly worthy with her life. >> reporter: the first lady's comments came on the first vote on the watered down gun bill, set to take place this morning. pat toomey and joe manchin, both of who have an "a" rating from the national rifle association, forged a compromise on background checks. manchin touched by newtown families when he met with them on capitol hill. the legislation would require a background check on purchases at gun shows and on the internet. but would exempt private transactions. it would also require states and the federal government to require records on criminals and the violently mentally ill. but can it pass a republican congress? >> many of them are looking carefully at the legislation, but i -- i don't know in the end how many will support it. >> reporter: many gun owners are not convinced. >> none of these laws will stop crime. the criminals will go on getting

you meeting with the families from newtown, connecticut. it looked emotional. what was going through your head at that time? >> john and christine, thank you for having me. it was emotional. i never met braver people, stronger people in my life than the families of these beautiful little babies who were slaughtered. for them to come in with strength, they are not overreaming, asking to ban all weapons, stop this, stop that, take rights away from people or ban the second amendment. none of those things, they come from a gun culture the same as my state and we've put a piece of legislation out there and they are supporting legislation, basically says if you go to a gun show, you will be treated at same as if you go to a gun store today. if you buy online, you will be treated the same. and i think it's a tremendous process that's moving forward, but if we can keep guns out of the hands of people who have been mentally adjudicated and

are a criminal we know, then we have a chance of keeping those guns away from them and that's really where we need to be focusing on and what we are doing. >> have you been speaking with the nra, national rifle association while you are formulating this proposal and you thought the nra might stay jew tral aft neutr neutral. the nra has come out and said they are opposed and they are keeping score. will count the votes that senators make for this bill against them. do you feel like are you taking on the nra right now? >> i don't feel like i'm taking on anybody. i'm saying what we are taking is the most common-sense approach that most americans. i can assure you 75% to 85% of law abiding gun owners that enjoy shooting, all of the pleasures of the second amendment. i know i will protect the second amendment, they agree with us,

and i'm asking for my friends at the nra, let the members see the bill in its entirety. we're putting online. my website, manchin.senate.gov. and see it it has a breakdown. we conversed with the nra all the way through it. i thought everybody needs to be through it and we have a piece of legislation that protects the second amendment rights of gun owners like myself. a simple thing we should be get cleared up. if i go hunting in another state, and i pass through another state that has different types of gun laws, i don't have a background check, and i shouldn't be having my gun the way they interpret the law, i could be in violation. this clears that up. a lot of things cleared up what needed to be cleared up for years. asking our friends at the nra, please take another look and consider and allow your members to see the facts. >> do you think you have 60 votes? >> we do. today -- today we will go to cloiture. and that takes 60 votes to get on the bill.

ambassador, former new mexico governor. amid the precautions and amid the words that the missile is in an upright position, ready to fire, the question, how can we know if this is serious? and how serious is it? >> well, it's -- it's very serious, but we don't know exactly what is going to happen. two things could happen. one, it's in an upright position. a musudan missile, medium range. could be in preparation for a launch, or it could be a deception move. a move to unnerve the international community. either way, the north koreans have achieved making everybody nervous what we have to watch here is asian society, asian leaders, savering face here is very important in asia, now, the problem is that the north korean leader, the young leaders maybe put himself in a corner, and to

show to his north korean military that his main audience, going to have to do something. that is worry some. >> sounds like this may be for domestic consumption to bolster his image, this young leader. but if he paints himself into a corner, what is the way out? how do you take an off-ramp, try to figure out what the off ramp is to ratchet down the tension? >> well, the off-ramp, the way out, a face saver, might be china. and china makes a very urgent, diplomatic appeal and maybe this is what the secretary of state are discuss in seoul tomorrow. going to the north koreans and saying there needs to be entering into negotiation. and i think the main goal has to be long range, get the north koreans back to the negotiating table to negotiate a reduction or termination of their nuclear cycle. nuclear weapons cycle.

we're not just talking about nuclear weapons. we're talking about export of nuclear materials to countries like iran, hostile relationships with possible terrorist groups, we don't know that, so it's a grave situation, but it's also important, everybody stay cool. the north koreans are masters of deception, they are masters of unpredictability, and they play the international media very well, especially the north korean military. >> you brought up iran. north korea not the only diplomatic hot spot. u.s. at odds with iran on its nuclear program. the iranians are probably looking at what's going on in the korean peninsula. what do the iranians take from this, as far as how far the u.s. will be pushed? >> i think they are watching it very carefully. what the iranians want to see is a continuation of north korea's nuclear program, because right

now iran is developing theirs, and we don't have concrete information, but there could be some sharing of data, sharing of scientific materials, and, again, as i stressed before, the long-range problem with a country like north korea is perhaps some of those nuclear materials could be exported. they desperately need foreign exchange. have huge sanctions on them. the country in an economic crisis, and relations with syria, pakistan, iran, with groups on the black market, international outlaw groups. that's the danger that they might get some of this enriched uranium that the north koreans have. >> there has been some sense from the chinese, even mass sense that they don't think one country should be able to destabilize the whole region, kind of a veiled criticism of north korea maybe are you right, maybe the chinese will be so key in all of this, governor

courtroom later today? >> well, the procedure just started at 8:30. this is for all of the people who have been arrested here in hillsboro county for the last 24 to 36 hours, not just joshua and sharyn hakken. so telling in which order they will come. but they will officially hear the charges, charges of child neglect, kidnapping, false imprisonment. battery, burglary read to them. they will not physically be in the courtroom in hillsboro county. they there say system via closed circuit television where they will be in the jail where they've been for the last 24 to 36 hours or so, and they will speak to the judge from the monitor. they have been isolated from general population that is customary when you have two suspects involved in such a high-profile case, right at the height of interest in their case, john. >> we have not seen the hakken boys yet, but i understand we

it is a fisherman's dream or nightmare? you feel a tug and after two hours of fighting, you realize you have been battling a 13-foot great white shark. this happened to four guys, not just four guys, four high school guy who's took turns reeling in their catch before they finally let it go. >> the four are joining us from ft. lauderdale, florida. you hook a big one. harry, i'll ask you first. you hook a big one, how long

before you realized this wasn't a sailfish on the end? this wasn't a tuna. this was something really special? >> well, after about 30 minutes, the captain said this is for sure something that he's never caught before. and we were able to realize that it was pretty big and it took a while and after about an hour and a half, we were -- we were able to see it at the top and realize it's something incredible. >> once you realized it was a shark, was the inclination, let's keep on reeling it in or what i would do, i'm going to run as far as i possibly can? >> well, we wanted to see it. we were out there for fun, and he wanted to make sure we got a look of everything we had on the line. we weren't scared yet, but after seeing it, it was quite frightening. >> josh, i will have you jump in. we can see it on the side of the boat. laying on the side of the boat. must have been exhausted after four hours of battling it.

what it was like to sit in the fighting chair, strap in, try to bring this thing in? >> it was hard. i mean, this is a big shark, i'll tell you that. i actually fell asleep afterward, i was so exhausted. took a nap on the boat. >> apparently so did the shark. we're told the shark did swim away. tanner, the shark did swim away in the end? >> yes, ma'am. i think it was about as exhausted as we were. it came up and just wanted to rest. i mean, it was definitely fine, but it was just as tired as we were. >> any advice to would-be shark hunters out there? what's the best way to get the shark? >> i'm no shark experts. we were just at the right place at the right time, but i guess, you know, use a big bait and hope for the best. >> hope for the best with a great white shark. always a good idea. >> hope for the best, prepare for the worst. >> what did the captain say when
