9:00 pm
this is cnn breaking news. special "piers morgan live," it's been 6 1/2 hours since the fabulous released the pictures of the two most wanted men in the world. who are they? where are they? hopefully somebody has the information to find them. two men walking through the marathon crowd. one wearing a black hat, the other white. carrying backpacks. they stayed near the
9:01 pm
destruction. also two pieces of huge breaking news happening as we've come on air right now. a policeman has been shot at m.i.t. and seriously wounded. we'll go straight for the update on that in a moment. also a dramatic new picture, which has emerged in the last few minutes of one of the two fbi suspects. it was taken by a man called david green, who's from florida, just moments after the blast. the person on the blast wearing a white hat closely resembles one of the bombing suspects. david green joins me exclusively on the phone. this has all happened in the last few minutes in terms of coming to public attention, but you took this photograph. you went to the boston marathon and took this picture. what did you do with it after you'd taken it? >> well, after i took it i posted it on my facebook because i was probably one of the first people on the scene. and i saw the bomb. i saw the tragedy.
9:02 pm
and afterwards i posted it on my facebook to give those, my family and friend, an account of what i'd been through. >> you then traveled back, i believe, to your home in florida. and it was at that point that a friend of yours, i believe, clarify that are for me, said to you that there was a likeness between one of the two fbi suspect pictures released today and this person in your picture. >> that's correct. when i was on my way home about 7:00, a friend of mine texted me and said, dave, i think you need to look at that photo because i think you've got one of the suspect i.d.'d there. and the thing that makes it very meaningful to me is that when i saw all of the people injured when i walked away, and i was not able to help them, i called my wife crying, that i couldn't do anything. and so when he texted me, i
9:03 pm
can't tell you how good i felt that i'd actually caught one photo that could help this case. >> when you realized what you may have, did you then contact the police immediately? >> i contacted the fbi, which i had actually done on monday. and when i contacted the fbi on monday, i had actually pointed out another person who had not been running away in a panic, but it was not the person, i guess, they were looking for. >> right. >> when i contacted them this evening at 7:00, they immediately knew that they had something. i had given them everything i had and they told me it looks like a very good picture. >> just to clarify, mr. green, you had already notified the fbi on monday that you had a set of pictures. and they took receipt of those pictures. and then today at 7 p.m. tonight, florida time, i assume, you contacted them again to say, look again at one of the pictures. i think that one of the guys is in the picture. is that right? >> correct.
9:04 pm
>> and you're a professional -- are you a professional photographer? >> no, no, far from it. i had actually just run the marathon. i finished around 1:40 p.m. and four of my friends were cheering me on. they were standing right about the spot the second bomb went off. on my way back to meet them, they disappeared. i didn't know where they were. unfortunately, my phone died so i dipped into a store to get some power. that was about at 2:30. i came out of the store on 2:50. i walked back into fairfield toward the bomb which would have been my third time passing that site. i saw bomb one, bomb two, and the first thing i did was pulled out my phone and took one picture, that was the picture. from there i ran in to see if i could help people. what i saw was something that i was incapable of helping anybody because it was well beyond anything i've seen or knew how
9:05 pm
to deal with. then started walking away and taking other photos to see if there was something i could memorialize that might be helpful. >> you took this picture with an iphone, is that right? >> i did, correct. >> and the reason the fbi is so interested in this photograph is it's the clearest image, apparently, they have to date of one of the two suspects. >> i guess so. you know, they -- i know that the images they released were the best quality they had. i know the photo shows it has a number 3 on his baseball cap, not an enhanced number seven. i think it also shows he was not wearing the bag with the bomb post explosion. >> he also continues to exude this demeanor of extraordinary nonchala nonchalant, compared to the people in your photograph panic
9:06 pm
stricken, coupled with the other pictures of him and the other suspect being remarkably notably calm in the vicinity would suggest this is the same person they're looking for. and the calmness is because he may be connected to the perpetration of the explosion. >> yeah. you know, it's interesting also because for a moment, as we were looking at that photo -- as i was looking at it, somebody else told me to look right behind him because there's a gentleman that almost resembles the second suspect with khakis, a black top and black cap but it actually turned out to be that he has a red part of a cap and not the white part. and he also -- i couldn't find anything else, but it does look like suspect number two is moving in a dance of the crowd behind him and aware of what was going on. >> when these pictures first began to emerge tonight, there
9:07 pm
were obviously doubts about the authenticity. t "the new york times" eventually wrote the story involving your name. presumably there's no doubt about the authenticity of this particular image? >> no, this is on my own iphone. this is what i took. >> how many pictures in total did you take? did you say you just took the one or was there a set? >> i took one picture. all the other photos that i have are videos that i was taking afterwards. >> do you think it's possible on those videos you have more imagery of this particular man? >> no, i don't think so because as you can see, he was definitely leaving. and i caught him really on the tail end of my photo. as i said, i walked straight into the area where the bomb had gone off to see if i could help people. and probably within 30 seconds, every spectator and athlete who was running for their lives was gone.
9:08 pm
and what was left was a very -- a number of victims, first responders who bravely jumped into it. and then some people like me who mp were coming back to see if they could help. there were not very many people left. the video i took was a tragic video of a lot of injured people, including children. >> it wasn't an extraordinarily powerful image but when you add this detail, it could be vital to the fbi and to their whole investigation. there are some details on the picture, which i'm sure were not as clear in some of the other pictures released today, particularly the shoes that he's wearing and other detail, as you said, about the baseball -- the baseball cap. i'm not sure exactly what we can see, but we're going to -- i'm sorry. i'm just having that clarified. it's the shoes that someone's left behind on the floor there that we're seeing in that picture right now.
9:09 pm
do you know whether they may possibly belong to this particular suspect, for example? >> no, i don't know, piers. i was -- you know, it was all very fast. a lot of screaming, a lot of noise. as i said, i took that one photo and then really rushed in to see if i could help. >> whereabouts in florida are you from, david? >> i'm from jacksonville beach, florida. >> and what is your occupation? >> i'm the ceo of 110% compression and ice, which is we make compression garments for athletes. and i was up at the marathon running. you know, my first boston marathon, so i was super excited. our whole team was there. we were doing the expo. and, of course, it ended in tragedy. and trying to figure out how we can help now. >> final question, i mean, how do you feel if it turns out this is the suspect and it turns out to be the person that did this,
9:10 pm
as somebody who ran in the race, how do you feel about having recorded such an extraordinary photograph? >> you know, i got to be honest, i've been pretty numb because of everything i've seen. and very hard for me to have been standing there, trying to help and feeling very helpless. so, this brings me a lot of joy. and i hope it helps solve this case in a way. almost to redeem what i couldn't do at the site where i saw a lot of people in need. >> david green, thank you so much for joining me on the phone and for explaining this extraordinary development tonight. really quite remarkable that the one picture you took has this extraordinary scene anyway, but then you add to it, this new image. by far, the cleanest we have seen so far, from the public's point of view, of one of the two suspects.
9:11 pm
and it may well lead to this person being apprehended, which would be a remarkable achievement thanks to your work. thank you very much, indeed. >> my pleasure. >> quite a story developing tonight. i want to turn to another big development, another breaking news story. cnn national correspondent susan candiotti is following the shooting of an m.i.t. police officer tonight. this happened a short distance from the site of the bombing. what can you tell me about what's happened here? >> reporter: it's yes note painful day in the history of this city. can you imagine? we are getting word tonight, piers, that a police officer who was shot and -- at the campus at m.i.t., which is just about two miles away from where we are standing, has died. that, according to the massachusetts state police. we don't know the circumstances surrounding it, only that we found out within the hour that there had been a shooting on campus and that a campus police officer had been seriously wounded and shot.
9:12 pm
and then an alert was sent out, this is according to the state police. and according to m.i.t. on its own website, it said it happened near building 32 and that everyone on campus was advised to stay away from that area. that it was a very fluid and extremely dangerous situation. and now we learn that the police officer has died of his injuries. he has not yet been identified. again, piers, we don't know what led to that. from our vantage point we can see what appears to be a police helicopter circling the air behind us. obviously, as part of the ongoing investigation. we have also learned that along with the massachusetts state police investigating this, that the fbi is also aware and may be very well represented on the scene. but that's par for the course. it is what -- they would normally be notified of something like this, but we don't know if they are actively involved in the investigation. >> as far as you're aware,
9:13 pm
susan, the m.i.t. website said the situation is considered active and extremely dangerous. is that still the situation? is this shooter still at large? >> reporter: it appears to be the case. we have still the -- the website hasn't changed. it is still being called a fluid situation. we don't know at this time whether anyone has been caught. if it has been happened, we haven't been notified of that. >> in our earlier report at 9:00 we were getting the breaking news you discovered from one of your sources, i believe, about the two suspects in these pictures, that they had shown remarkable kind of nonchalance around the scene, having planting their bombs. we now have a clearer image of one of these suspects. what do you make of that. >> reporter: isn't that something? i know we all certainly felt chills as' we saw the videotaped
9:14 pm
still photos from the fbi right before this happened and the casual way they were walking around. as you put it, very nonchalantly. now we see this photograph but now the information i have learned from a federal law enforcement official who has seen videos of the -- of what happened before and afterward, you wonder what was happening when it happened. well, according to this official, these two suspects were very casual about what happened. watched, stuck around to see the bomb explode, and then walked away. in the words of this law enforcement official, said that they did exactly what everyone else wasn't doing. everyone else was acting very differently, running away, trying to help people. and these two people walked away casually. apparently, there are images of that that have not been released. but as you point out, piers, now that we see this photograph, but you can't tell because it's a still photograph, a still frame,
9:15 pm
we don't see any real movement so we can't tell how fast he was walking, what he was doing. but that does appear to resemble the suspect. >> and it's an absolute vindication of what the fbi did today, in effectively crowd sourcing this situation and appealing directly to the public to tell them anything of use, because clearly a friend of this man, david green, who took this photograph, said, have you studied the background in this picture? one of the two fbi suspects, is definitely in your picture. at that point he called the fbi and told them. and they discovered they had this new development, which is potentially very significant for them. >> boy. it sure is. that's exactly what the fbi wants people to do. you think you might not have something. go ahead and look, give it a second look and a third look because you never know what you may find. in fact, we know that their website practically crashed today.
9:16 pm
so many people were tuning in to see what the fbi was putting out. now we know they are being inundated with tips and phone calls. people looking at what they have and perhaps telling them they think they might recognize this man. you saw what happened here. that's exactly what happened. he had already called them ahead of time and now again he called again to say, i think that's him. and the fbi seemed to readily acknowledge that, according to mr. green, what he told you. >> i would urge anybody who's watching this, looking at that image and the time that it was taken, we think about 2:50 p.m., if you were anywhere near that scene taking pictures, then please call the fbi immediately and let them see all your film. susan, for now, thank you very much. i'm sure we'll be back for more updates on the tragic shooting and killing it now appears of a policeman at m.i.t. another devastating incident to happen in boston this week. it's been an extraordinary week with these dreadful incidents. thank you for now. joining me is jim maxwell,
9:17 pm
cnn contributor and former cia operative bob bair. i spoke to you earlier. we have what the fbi would seem to be a significant development in terms of a new picture. what do you make of that? >> i can tell you this is a classic example throughout my career, every investigation, every successful investigation, is hinged on the cooperation of the public. good citizens out there, willing to raise their hands, step forward, make a statement, testify in court, provide information. and this is a classic example of that. this photo now gives us direction. we know which direction at least one of the bombers started to head as the bomb went off. hopefully, other video and photo will ultimately extend where he was headed or maybe who he hooked up with at the end. >> bob, let me bring you in here. clearly, things happening at quite a pace now. this new image gives us a much
9:18 pm
clearer picture of one of the suspect's faces. there's also this strange situation of some shoes on the floor. we have no idea if it's any connection to him at all. of course, it could be. strikings me some of the clothing he's wearing, as you can identify it more and more, that in itself can be a firm clue. what do you think the way this is developing in the last few hours? >> well, i think this technology is remarkable. a couple years ago i worked on an assassination investigation in lebanon and the amazing ability of modern police force to go after people like this and run them down to ground is amazing. i think that if, in fact, these people have stayed in the united states and these pictures are out everywhere with the police, with facial recognition, that it's a matter of time we get them. >> i mean -- >> assuming they haven't left. >> it's interesting to me because social media has been taking a kicking in the last 36 hours for lots of hype,
9:19 pm
innuendo, rumor, perhaps the bad side of the way social networking can play in these instances but now we have a clear positive, where somebody took one picture on his iphone, then posted it to facebook, a friend of his on facebook studied that picture once the fbi released these images today and saw the connection. and that in itself could be a really quite dramatic move forward for the fbi. >> yeah, there's no way out of this for them unless they go live in the wilderness or something like that. you had the unibomber, he got away because he never went up on the internet, on phones, anything, he just disappeared. i think it's -- that happening now, unlikely. but that's the only way they're going to get away with the fbi -- the fbi is not going to miss a beat on any of this. it's amazing what they can do when they bring resources to a crime like this. >> definitely. bob and jim, please stay with me. take a short break. come back on these two breaking stories. one, a police officer who's been

closer look at those images. >> piers, this is the video the fbi wants everyone to look at. here he comes, suspect number one, according to the fbi, and suspect number two, heading down the sidewalk. it's good to have some frame of reference here to understand exactly where they're going and why this matters so much to the fbi. where are these people? right now the police they're headed down is boylston avenue. this is actually the race happening right on you here, headed this direction. they're moving with the race. right now this person, who is now associated with the first blast near the finish line, is about three blocks away from that location. the second person back here now associated with the second blast is about 1 1/2 blocks away from that location. so, they're in the right position. the police say that they're moving together. why would they think that? two people walking down the sidewalk. you'll notice they're moving at exactly the same speed. the one behind is following in exactly the same position in

relation to the front. at the end of this shot you'll notice he jogs over here to the right and this one follows right behind him at the end. no doubt, the authorities have some other videos, too, that associate this relationship between them. but there are other things in this that will be scrutinized and very closely, piers, as time goes on, including the backpacks both of these men are carrying, including the clothing their carrying and where they are in other pictures in other video. all of that is being compared to the physical evidence of the shredded backpack we've seen already, of the crushed pressure cooker we've seen already. and, of course, of these still photos which the fbi wants everyone to look at very closely to see if they recognize anybody who is associated with this crime. that's the whole reason they put this video out there. >> thanks, tom. back with jim maxwell, retired fbi special agent and cnn
9:26 pm
contributor, former cia operative, bob bair. we're inching closer here because it's difficult to think back -- especially if this is a homegrown act of terror, these two suspects ought to have been identified by somebody. >> they just can't move. i mean, unless, you know, out of some miracle in the first couple hours they were whisked away, you know, put in disguise, super organized, you know, exit route, they're somewhere, a hotel with friends. and i think it's a matter of time. you know, this is pure speculati speculation, but with these kind of pictures, this kind of evidence, it's just a matter time. >> i don't know what the fbi has at its disposal from face recognition, but from the much clearer image from the iphone, would they have a better identity of ethnicity or a region of the world that
9:27 pm
these -- this particular suspect has come from? >> that technology does exist. the bureau does have access to it, but the catch here is they would have to have somebody in the database that matches up to that image. >> could they say this person is of middle east origin or -- >> i think it would be very early to even try to draw that conclusion. >> i don't think you can draw that from these pictures, even the latest one. it's hard to say if it's an american, someone from the middle east. it's not obvious. >> no, it's not. you need someone to step forward and say, i recognize these guys, i rented a room to them, i rented a storage rental, they come in regularly to eat, have coffee. it could manifest in a number of different ways. from that interview you could get a profile of who they are and where they're from. >> in terms of the way the fbi conduct these things, we have to assume when they release images like that, they have a lot more material at their disposal.
9:28 pm
>> exactly. >> they're trying to get out there, hook in exactly what they have hooked in, new photographs. will they have done the necessities of locking down ports and airports, so on, so if they are trying to get out of america, they're waiting for them. >> yes, i believe so. the mechanics of doing that, it's quite an undertaking but there are people assigned full time just for that type of duty. and right now, with the photos that have not been released or the images that have not been released, now we're starting to see and put together what these guys were up to, i think everybody agrees, this is a cowardly act, but also anybody capable of leaving a bomb in a public place to kill innocent people, it's got to be a sociopath of some sort. >> bob, if we work from the presumption it might be al qaeda, and we have no logic for that at the moment, but if you work from that, does everything
9:29 pm
you've seen from all of the fragments of the bomb, the batteries, the way this device was set up, the modus operandi of two people who were calmly checking out the vicinity, probably planned this for quite some time, bit look of it, does it add up to a classic al qaeda strike if it turns out to have been that? >> it does. i don't -- so far i haven't seen any mistakes they've made. somebody has coached them. again, they cased the place to make sure backpacks weren't bei being searched, the fact there was a remote-controlled detonator shows a certain amount of sophistication, two bombs. we used to call that double-tapping. you always do everything in twos. it was a military operation in that sense. and the fact that both detonators went off. that's not always assured. it has the ring of something of experience. it really does. and it very well could be al

qaeda in the sense of mass casualties, hit the united states in revenge for the drone attacks, any number of reasons. and will they absolutely have to claim it? no. their playbook doesn't say claim it right away. they may strike again and claim it then. you can't tell. if it's domestic, i would say the same thing. these people had some sort of practice wherever. they might have gone out on their own or they may have had some military background. >> i was going to ask you that specific question. if it turns out to be domestic terrorism, would the people that have done this needed to have had some military experience at some stage? >> you know, they wouldn't have to, but i think jimmy could tell you, you know, you always want to practice with explosives before you start playing with them. i mean, it's just the rule. you cannot sit down and look at a book or get on the internet and expect your bomb to go off the first time. you'd be just very lucky.
9:31 pm
that's been my experience. so, i think, you know, one of these two explanations are the most reasonable. >> jim, would you go along with that? >> yeah, i would agree. if you go back to the late '70s, the weatherman made that mistake, blew themselves up learning how to construct bombs. this particular incident does have the earmarks of preplanning. they're very cool, calm and collected in the execution of what they did that day. i think the fbi laboratory, once they are successful in putting this -- these devices back together, will get a clearer indication of their level of sophistication and expertise, as well as many of these bomb builders, it's been my experience over in iraq, that they have a signature. they have a specific type. the type of equipment, type of battery, type of wiring,
