>> nice to see you, john. i'm zoraida sambolin live in cleveland. it is 5:00 a.m. in the east. we begin with horrifying details about the private hell those three women endured for ten years inside this house on seymour avenue right behind me. prosecutors say ariel castro operated a private prison and torture chamber right inside his home. he's held on $8 million bail charged with kidnapping and rape. and an aggravated murder charge could come next for the alleged killing of fetuses as well. we have a cnn exclusive this morning. the daughter closest to ariel castro speaking out about the charges against her father. listen to her describe the moment when she learned he had been arrested. >> it feels like everything crashed down. like, i just wanted to melt into the floor, like, i just wanted to die. i have no problem cutting him out of my life. i have no problem with that. i never want to see him again. >> we'll have much more of that

exclusive interview with ariel castro's daughter coming up in a moment. but first more on castro's day in court. an exclusive look into the backyard of his home and his past. we'll go to pamela brown live outside the home of the freed kidnapped victim gina dejesus. good morning to you, pam. >> reporter: good morning to you. as the women heal and recover, we hear from sources that ariel castro confessed to some of his actions related to his behavior over the last ten years. these exclusive pictures obtained by cnn give us the first glimpse into ariel castro's backyard, though much of it is obscured by tarps, jugs are strewn all around. and this weary image of a white cross spotted by a neighbor. at his first court appearance, castro looked despondent looking down and making eye contact with no one. >> we evaluate to seek charges

eligible for the death penalty. >> reporter: following arraignment, the prosecutor made it clear additional charges could likely be added. castro already faces four counts of kidnapping and three counts of rape. >> for each and every act of sexual violence, rape, each day of kidnapping, every felonious assault, all his attempted murders and each aggravated murder. >> reporter: one of the women, michelle knight, became pregnant five times during her captivity and each time castro starved her and punched her repeatedly in the stomach until she miscarried. for reasons still unknown, amanda berry was able to give birth to her baby and case roe forced knight to deliver according to the report. when the child stopped breathing, knight gave the baby cpr. as investigators sift through 200 pieces of evidence out of this house of horrors, one in particular is getting attention. details of a note written by castro in 2004 have surfaced.

according to law enforcement surfaces, castro wrote about being abused by a family member. in an attempt to justify his own actions. cast roar has been cooperating with investigators and confessed to some of his actions. ariel castro's daughter arlene gave an emotional interview to abc news. >> i would like to say that i'm absolutely so, so sorry. i really want to see you, gina. and i want you to meet my kids. i'm so sorry for everything. >> reporter: and we are learning from the ohio attorney general that a rush order has been placed on the result of the dna test for ariel castro, and they are expecting those results some time today. as i mentioned, we are here outside the house of gina dejesus, who is recovering and healing with her family. you can see behind me there are lots of balloons outside the

home. certainly a lot of community support for this family and the other families here affected by this. >> pam, can you tell us more about what castro reportedly wrote back in 2004? >> reporter: well, zoraida, we know investigators went through evidence and among the evidence taken from the home are these notes written by ariel castro back in 2004 according to sources, these are pretty lengthy documents we are finding out. and in these documents n these notes, basically castro is rationalizing, justifying his actions and talking about the reasons behind his actions after abducting the women allegedly more than a decade ago, and then his actions towards them over the couple of years before he wrote that letter. so we are learning, also, that he talks about abuse from a family member and he uses that in these notes to justify his

behavior. >> all right. pamela brown live outside gina dejesus' home. thank you for that. and the daughter closest to ariel castro is also speaking out exclusively to cnn. angie gregg is angry and so heart broken. she says she never saw signs of that horror that was allegedly unfolding right inside her father's house and wants the world to know her family does not have monster in their blood. laurie siegal with the interview you will only see on cnn. >> my husband and i are in complete disbelief that the friendly, caring, doting man i knew as my daddy, was, in fact, the most demonic criminal that i have met or heard of over the past ten years. >> reporter: this is part of the letter angie gregg wrote after learning her father was behind the brutal kidnappings in cleveland, ohio.

now she's speaking out. >> to go to the vigils, to show the girls' parents footage and pleas for return, to rape starve and beat human innocent beings, i'm disgusting. >> reporter: you learned your father wasn't the guy you thought he was. what is that like? >> it's like a horror movie. it's like watching a bad movie. >> reporter: only you're in it. >> only we're in it, we're the man characters. and i never suspected anything was going on, but the more i sit and dwell on it, i think of things that make a whole lot of sense now. >> reporter: you look back and say, okay, you can piece together, you're beginning to piece together a puzzle, where were the signs? >> well, he never wanted to leave the house more than a day at a time. he wassed he was adamant when he left the

home he had to be back in the morning. ever since my mom lived in the house, the basement was kept locked. i have never been upstairs in the house and i never had reason to be. i asked him to see my room for old times sake and he says, oh, honey, there's so much junk up there. you don't want to go up there. >> reporter: when you think about what might have been and what was behind those doors, how do you, how do you cope with that? >> i mean, it all makes sense now. now i know. it's hard, but i have no sympathy for the man. i have no sympathy. he was just another person who's lied and deceived and manipulated people. and i could never forgive him. i could never forgive him. if he would have asked me this last week, i would have told you he's the best dad and grandpa. >> reporter: now angie realizes

ariel castro may have fathered a daughter with one of the women he allegedly held captive, meaning she may have a sister. >> he showed me a picture that was in his cell phone randomly, and he said, look at this cute little girl. it was a face shot. and i said, she's cute, who is that? you know? and he said, this is my girlfriend's child. and i said, dad, that girl looks like emily. emily's my younger sister. and he said, no, that's not my child, that's my girlfriend's child by somebody else. >> reporter: angie said she was always close with her father but she witnessed abuse in hair home. >> he was pretty jealous. he was always saying that my mom was, you know, messing with certain neighbors, things like that. and i've seen, i've seen him basically stomp on her like she was a man. he's beat her pretty bad several

times. >> reporter: her mother passed away from cancer-related complications in 2012. >> i've lost my mother, now i've lost a father, but i don't -- i don't cry for him. >> reporter: if you had a message for him, what would it be? >> all this time -- why? why -- i don't even know what to say. why, after all this time, why did you do it in the first place? why did you take these girls? and why did you never leave? and why did you never -- why did you never feel guilty enough to let them go? >> reporter: what message do you have for these women and their families? >> i feel so much -- so much sorrow that you had to endure this. i'm glad that you're back home with your family, finally, because they never stop thinking about you. they never stopped, they never forgot you. right now these girls need to

heal. >> reporter: do you feel that you're going to need to heal, too? >> oh, i'll be fine. i wasn't submitted to the horror that they were. >> reporter: in a day you have lost the man that raised you, that must be hard. >> he's nothing but a memory anymore. he can never be daddy again. >> reporter: laurie is going to join us later at 7:00. we'll talk more about this interview and some of the details she got out of there. and john, i have to tell you, you watch this and just think, how did this man allow all of these people inside to this house knowing now what we know was going on inside of that house. it just baffles your mind. >> you can see the daughter, the wheels spinning in her head, trying to remember all the details over the last ten years. it is absolutely riveting, fascinating. thank you so much for that. we'll go back to cleveland in just a moment. meanwhile, new this morning, high-speed, high-risk and now deadly. the death of an olympic gold

medal sailor raising questions about the safety of high-speed yacht racing. 36-year-old andrew simpson there on the right of this picture, was killed when his yacht crashed in san francisco bay trapping him underneath, under water for about ten minutes. here's dan simon. >> reporter: after the highest speeds, the 72-foot cat ma rans look as if they are almost flying. in the right conditions they can reach speeds of 45 miles an hour. that's why a capsize can turn deadly. it happened thursday afternoon in the san francisco bay. a boat operated by the artimus racing team wednesday end over end hurling the team of 12 sailors into the water. the crew representing sweden was practicing for this summer's america's cup. andrew simpson, an olympic gold medalist and well-known figure in the sailing world, died after being trapped underneath the vessel. a desperate scene unfolded on the shore as paramedics tried to

save his life. >> it's shock iing, it's an experience to go through and we have a lot to deal with in the next few days in terms of assuring everybody's well-being. >> reporter: winds thursday were strong on the bay but not abnormal. it's one of the reasons san francisco bay is considered a sailor's nirvana and why the america's cup is being held here this summer. >> it's a tragic day. this is someone that's very well-known and well-regarded as an expert racer. and everyone worked really hard to not have this outcome. these are always difficult things to report. and our hearts go out to family and members of the racing team of the artimus. >> reporter: it wasn't the first mishap involving one of these yachts. last fall team oracle from the united states capsized its $8 million boat in a nearby part of the bay. but no one was seriously injured in the accident.

the team had another close call in 2011 when a smaller catamaran sent sailors flying through the air. these boats are all harnessing new technology allowing them to travel faster than ever before. it's not immediately clear what caused the artimus boat to capsize, but with one of the sports star sailors dead and other high-profile incidents, the debate is growing whether these boats, engineering marvels they may be, are too dangerous for competition. dan simon, cnn, san francisco. and we have new developments in the jodi arias murder case. arias is being held in a psychiatric prison ward under constant supervision in phoenix. hln's dr. drew pinsky doesn't think arias is faking it. >> if somebody's in a psychiatric ward, a clinician takes that criteria to be there.

on top of that, if i were the warden and had somebody doing a news interview where she just said i want to die, boom, that person goes in a locked facility. >> the sentencing faze of arias' murder trial has been postponed until next wednesday. more tough questionses expected today about the attack in ben ghazibenghazi. the house speaker john boehner says the white house wanted to change the benghazi talking points before the election, so this should be a big topic today in the white house press briefing. you can expect that. the family of the late ambassador christopher stevens, one of the four american who is died last september, they said deplore any effort to politicize this tragedy. this morning minnesota is one step closer to becoming the 12th state to allow same sex marriage. supporters at the statehouse chanted their thanks after the house voted in favor of letting gay couples marry. >> thank you!

thank you! thank you. >> the state senate plans to consider the bill on monday and it's expected to pass there as well. governor mark dayton pledged to sign this measure into law. you have to check this out. a wild shoot-out at close range caught on camera. man, surveillance footage of this fierce gun battle last july on a suspected marijuana grow house was shown in a miami courtroom yesterday. one of the suspects got out of the car and shot at police officers and fbi agents. this was awful. a detective was seriously hurt. a suspect girardo delgado was killed when police returned fire. police said they found 80 pounds of marijuana inside that house. still ahead, more big news, controversial burial. boston bombing suspect tamerlan tsarnaev is laid to rest in a secret grave site. we'll have the details straight ahead. welcome back. i'm zoraida sambolin live in cleveland. the details are unthinkable. neighbors say ariel castro was a man who enjoyed listening to music and riding his motorcycle. coming up, we'll give you an inside look inside the house of horrors. we have new developments to tell you about in the boston marathon bombings. a secret resting place for bombing suspect tamerlan tsarnaev, police in worcester, mthsz, confirm he has been laid to rest but won't say where. this after weeks of searching for a place to bury him. the news comes as lawmakers are grilling law enforcement about the marathon bombings. cnn's paula newton is following that for us. >> reporter: for the first time lawmakers in washington got a crack at details of the boston

bombings and at intelligence failures with republican chairman michael mccall saying he feels the bombers succeeded because the system failed. boston police commissioner edward davis testified the fbi did not tell him russia had warned the u.s. of tamerlan tsarnaev, one of the bombing suspects. >> if you had this information before the bombing, would your police four and you, would you have done anything differently? >> that's very hard to say. we would certainly look at the information, we would certainly talk to the individual. >> reporter: but in a statement released after the hearing on thursday, they said boston police officers serving on a joint terrorism task force had access to a database that detailed the investigation into tsarnaev. as testimony unfolded in washington, the drama at this funeral home over. the body is gone, tamerlan

tsarnaev has been buried in an undisclosed location. >> a courageous and compassionate individual came forward to provide the assistance needed to properly bury the deceased. his body is no longer in the city of worcester and is now entombed. >> reporter: tsarnaev's uncle confirms to cnn that he took his nephew's body out of state to be buried and is not telling tamerlan's parents where their son has been laid to rest. he also confirm that is no second autopsy was ever performed. the touchy issue about where to bury tsarnaev unnerved people for different reasons. those who felt he didn't deserve an american grave. those who felt uncivilized to do anything else, but more than anything it diverted energy from victims and their families. 22 minutes after the hour. coming up, bank heists, they

we are live in cleveland where the accused kidnapper and rapist ariel castro is behind bars and now he is talking. and exactly, who exactly is the man accused of the heinous and inhumane crimes? we dig into the life of ariel castro. plus, thieves still $45 million, almost all in cash from banks around the world. how on earth did they pull this on? someone has some explaining to do. welcome back to this special edition of "early start." i'm john berman in new york. >> i'm zoraida sambolin live in cleveland. we'll get to the latest here. a private person, a torture chamber, these are the words used by prosecutors to describe what went on for an entire ten years inside the house right here behind me on seymour street. the man who lived at 2207 seymour avenue, ariel castro, made his first court appearance yesterday. he was arraigned on kidnapping

and rape charges and prosecutors plan to pursue an aggravated murder charge. why? for the death of one of his victims' fetuses. they said there were five alleged deaths there. we are also getting an exclusive look at the backyard of castro's home along with a glimpse of his shadowy past. we'll go live to pamela brown live who is near one of the victim's homes. >> reporter: we are outside the home of gina dejesus. as you can see behind me here, there are batches of balloons outside the home really just showing the outpouring of the community support since gina dejesus arrived here at her aunt's home. our anderson cooper spoke to one of her aunts, sandra ruiz, and last night she said gina is in good spirits, she's doing well and that the family is thrilled to have her back. take a listen. >> she's very, very happy to be

outside, but unfortunately it was short-lived. >> why, some news helicopters or something many. >> yes. >> terrible. what -- how is the family doing to have her back? >> words cannot express, cannot express, the joy that we have. >> reporter: and, zoraida, also in the interview where they talk about how she left one prison and is in another prison with all the media attention. she was outside and had to come back in because of the news helicopters. so the family is requesting the privacy and really giving gina her space to adapt back to this new reality for her. >> john back in new york here, ariel castro, the charges he's facing, could there be more of them? >> reporter: right now we know he's facing four counts of

kidnapping, three counts of rape. we heard from the county prosecutor yesterday and they are evaluating all possible charges they can bring forward. there was talk of bringing aggravated murder charges forward. we heard yesterday in the initial look at the report that castro allegedly caused miscarriages of michelle wright. he would punch her in the stomach and starve her, at least five mismarriages that we know of. and castro could face the death penalty, but again, no other charges have been filed outside the seven charges before. >> i'm hearing about writings that happened back in 2004. can you tell us a little about that? >> reporter: yeah, according to sources, castro wrote, quote, a diary of his actions. these were documents that he wrote, basically detailing his

actions and the reasons behind his actions, rationalizing his actions. he talks about in these notes how he was abused by a family member. and he says that justifies his actions towards these three women he allegedly abducted. to point out here, this was written in 2004 according to sources after all three of the women had been abducted. and we know that at least part of it, an aspect of the notes, talked about thoughts of suicide. >> all right. pamela brown live outside of the aunt of gina dejesus this morning. we really appreciate that. thank you so much. so, we are also hearing for the very first time from the daughter of ariel castro. angie gregg spoke exclusively to laurie seegal and discussed the moment and what she felt when she heard what her father had done. despite the heartbreak she feels, she says castro was

generous to her and her sister, even giving her a puppy. and a clear picture of how this happened, the man engaged to ariel castro's former wife said there were signs throughout the years that he could indeed be a monster. cnn's brian todd has more for us. >> caller: looking down and despondent, ariel castro hears the words from the judge hearing he wouldn't get out of jail any time soon. with four cases against him, that means his bond is $8 million. his defense attorney says he doesn't have any money. castro doesn't respond as she speaks to him. the prosecutor has plenty to say how castro allegedly treated amanda berry, gina dejesus and michelle knight while they were in his house. >> they were bound and estranged and sexually assaulted, never allowed to leave this residence. >> reporter: the details get more horrifying in a police

incident report obtained by cnn. one of the women held captive, michelle knight, said she was pregnant five times but was starved and punched until he eventually miscarried. according to the police report, amanda berry said the 6-year-old girl she gave birth to is ariel cast castro's child. when berry went into labor, castro ordered michelle knight to deliver the child. the baby was delivered in a pool or tub to contain the mess. once the child was born, there were moments of horror. the child stopped breathing and everyone screamed and ariel castro allegedly threatened to kill michelle knight if the baby didn't survive. according to the report, michelle knight said she breathed into the child's mouth to keep her alive. the revelation that the women were bound, that chains and ropes were in the home, is consistent with the accounts of fernando cologne, engaged to ariel castro's ex-wife until her

death last year. cologne told me castro would beat her vigorously, sometimes with barbells. >> she told me she was locked in the house, he had tinted the windows, she had padlocked the doors. the only time she was able to come out was for her appointments, that was it. >> reporter: but fernando cologne was convicted of molesting two of castro's two children several years ago. he's long said he's innocent claiming castro orchestrated the charges against him to deflect the attention from his own alleged crimes. cologne is now planning to appeal his conviction. the three kidnap victims said they never left castro's property but there are counts the little girl was taken out. we are told castro was casually seen with a 6-year-old girl in the park, she won't play with other children but would pet his small dogs. >> she was well-dressed, you

know, and well cared of. slightly slender, but, you know, she was also kind of white. >> reporter: he says he would like to take one of the dogs to the little girl to play with it so she wouldn't have to come back to the park. >> thanks to brian. and we are hearing for the first time of the mother of ariel castro. she made a tearful plea of forgiveness to the young mothers and their families saying i suffer because they suffer. >> translator: i have a sick son who has done something serious. i suffer much. may those girls forgive me. i suffer the pain they suffered. i'm suffering for my son's pain. my son is sick and i have nothing to do with what my son did. >> castro is charged with four counts of kidnapping and three counts of rape. you know, this is just such a torturous situation for everyone involved, john.

welcome back. i'm zoraida sambolin live in cleveland. and here are the newest developments many the case of three women who escaped from captivity. the prosecutor is expected to add now aggravated murder to the list of charges already placed against suspect ariel castro for the termination of his captives' pregnancies. castro's mother made a tearful plea for what her son has done. and his daughter is disgusted by what her father have done, but she says strange things from her

buried outside of massachusetts. so just two days after being indicted of murdering her boyfriend, jodi arias is now inside a prison psychiatric ward. arias won't be in court today as the sentencing phase has been postponed until next wednesday. big changes are in store for "american idol." randy jackson who has been a judge on the show since it started is calling it quits. the once powerhouse competition has struggled lately. welcome back to "early start." the city of cleveland is finally able to celebrate the safe return of the three women who escaped from captivity. a so-called victory vigil was held in a local park. participants released balloons into the air, look at that, they were enjoying that celebrating the return of those girls. isn't it nice to have a victory

well, and his dark past let's go live to pamela brown outside the home of freed kidnap victim gina dejesus. i think you're in front of her aunt's house, right? >> that's right, zoraida. there's really been just an outpouring of support for these women, and you can probably see behind me here, there are batches of balloons right outside the home here, zoraida. as these victims heal and recover from their ordeal, we are learning that castro has confessed to authorities to at least some of his actions related to his behavior toward the women over the past decade. these exclusive pictures obtained by cnn give us the first glimpse into ariel castro's backyard. though much of it is obscured by tarps you can see junk strewn all around and this eerie image of a white cross spotted by a neighbor. at his first court appearance, castro looked despondent repeatedly looking down and seemingly making eye contact with no one. >> we evaluate whether to seek

charges eligible for the death penalty. >> reporter: following his arraignment, cuyahoga county prosecutor tim mcginty made it clear additional charges could be added. castro already faces four counts of kidnapping and three counts of rape. >> for each and every act of sexual violence, rape, each day of kidnapping, every felonious assault, all his attempted murders, and each act of aggravated murder. >> reporter: an initial police incident report says one of the women, michelle knight, became pregnant at least five times during her captivity. and that each time castro starved her and punched her repeatedly in the stomach until she miscarried. for reasons still unknown amanda berry was able to give birth to her baby, and castro forced knight to deliver it. according to the report. when the child stopped breathe knight gave the baby cpr. as investigators sift through at least 200 pieces of evidence taken out of this house of horrors, one in particular is getting attention. details of a note written by castro in 2004 have surfaced.

according to law enforcement sources castro wrote about being abused by a family member, in an attempt to justify his own horrid actions. according to woio reporter scott taylor, castro says, quote, i am a sexual predator. he reportedly writes about picking up three women, saying they are here against their will because they made the mistake of getting in the car with a total stranger. sources say castro has been cooperating with investigators, and has confessed to some of his actions. ariel castro's daughter arlene gave an emotional interview to abc news. >> i would like to say, i'm absolutely so, so sorry. i really want to see you, gina. and i want you to meet my kids. i'm so sorry for everything. >> back live here this is actually the outside of gina

dejesus' parents' home. you can see all these balloons. underneath these balloons, one of gina's missing signs from years ago. we spoke to gina's aunt. anderson cooper spoke to sandra ruiz and said gina is in good spirits that she's still readjusting to this new reality. and we're hearing that there's been such a big outpouring of support for the -- from the community for these victims that now police are asking for all letters, anything to come to them, rather than these families. they're just asking to give them the privacy they need right now. >> you know what? i got a little confused earlier, because i spent a lot of hours at that home and one of the interesting things that you can see on your live shot is that blue tarp that they put up on the side of the house. that is so that gina can go outdoors and enjoy the fresh air. enjoy being outside without all of the glare of the cameras. it's really nice to see that that's still up for her.

that's a special moment. let's talk about castro's dna testing that is happening right now. they're trying to see if his dna may be linked to other crimes or missing persons cases. how soon could we see the results of the dna test? >> well, we could see them as soon as today, zoraida. we learned that ohio's attorney general has put a rush order on the results of that dna test for ariel castro. normally it takes about 20 days. but authorities are using special resources to speed up the process so that we get the results within 24 hours which would be today because the dna sample was taken yesterday. they want to run the sample through a database to see if his dna is connected to any previous crimes, or any missing persons cases before now. so we should be seeing those results soon. >> all right. pamela brown outside gina dejesus' house. thank you very much for that. the daughter closest to kidnapping suspect ariel castro is speaking exclusively to cnn.

angie gregg is angry and she is so heartbroken. she says she never saw signs of the horror that was allegedly unfolding right inside her father's house. and she wants the world to know her family does not have monster in their blood. lori segal with an interview that you will only see right here on cnn. >> all these weird things that i've noticed over, you know, over the years, like about, you know, how he kept his house locked down so tight, certain areas, and you know, how if we'd be out at my grandma's having dinner, he would disappear for an hour or so, and then come back. and there would be no explanation where he went. like it's -- everything's making sense now. it's all adding up. and i'm just -- i'm disgusted. i'm horrified. >> did you ever try to get in that basement? >> not since i was -- when i was very young when my mom was still living there i did pick locks on the basement because there was a cheap masterlock on the door.

picked the lock and we went snooping. i remember there being a fish tank down there which was odd because there was nobody down there to look at the fish. >> did you ever see any signs of a 6-year-old there? >> i never saw signs in the house. i never saw her with him. but about two months ago he picked me up, we spent the afternoon together, i just had some service on my car and he showed me a picture that was in his cell phone randomly and he said look at this cute little girl. it was a face shot and i said she's cute, who is that? you know. and he said, this is my girlfriend's child. and i said, dad, that girl looks like emily. emily's my younger sister. and he said, no, that's -- that's not my child, that's my girlfriend's child by somebody

else. >> your family is attached to this stigma. what is the message that you want to tell people that they might not understand? >> that my father's actions are not a reflection of everyone in the family. they're definitely not a reflection of myself, or my children. we don't have monster in our blood. >> you never want to talk to your dad again? >> no. i have no problem cutting him out of my life. i have no problem doing that. i never want to see him again. and another thing that i would like to ask him is, when did he think this was going to be over? how did he think it was going to end? you're 52 years old. did you think that you could carry this charade forever? what did you think that was going to happen? and eventually, you would have been caught, and then what of

these girls? what of your family? you didn't care. >> what message do you have for these girls? they're safe now. they're no longer there. but they were held captive and their whole lives were turned upside down. what message do you have for these women and their families? >> i feel so much -- so much sorrow that they had to endure this. i'm glad that you're back home with your family vinylly, because they never stopped thinking about you. they never stopped -- they never forgot you. they always thought you were alive when everybody else thought you were gone. i also, you know, i also feel sorrow that michelle's case, you know, because i'm just now hearing about her, too, that her case was, you know, treated differently because she was an adult when she came up missing, like that's -- it's real tragic because she was taken against her will, as well. and it's -- it's sickening. it's sickening. because that could have -- that

could be anybody. in that position. you know, in a blink of an eye you can be -- you could be abducted, you know, brutalized, and nobody would ever know it. you could be right around the corner and nobody would ever know it. it just goes to show. >> do you want to see them at all? would you like to see them at any point? >> i would love to see them. i would love to see the little girl jocelyn. but i don't want to pressure them at all. and that's maybe further down the road. maybe it will be a possibility. i would really love that. but you know right now these girls need to heal. >> it really breaks your heart to see these girls and how much they're suffering as all of these new details come out. we're going to talk to lori segal. she's going to join us on "starting point" in our 7:00 hour to get some more details about this. and actually how she actually got this interview, as well. it's really interesting, john. >> i can't believe it as i'm listening to the daughter piece together last ten years and all

of her interactions with her father and filling in the holes in that relationship, it's just crazy. all right, zoraida, thanks so much. new this morning, high speed high risk and now deadly. the death of an olympic gold medal winning sailor raising questions about the safety of high speed yacht racing this morning. 36-year-old andrew simpson, who you can see on the right of this picture, was killed when his yacht crashed in san francisco bay trapping him underneath, underwater, for about ten minutes. here's dan simon. >> reporter: after the highest speeds the 72 feet catamarans look as if they're almost flying. in the right conditions they can reach speeds of 45 miles an hour. that's why a capsize can turn deadly. it happened thursday afternoon in the san francisco bay. a boat operated by the "artemis" racing team went end over end, hurling its team of 12 sailors into the water. the crew representing sweden was practicing for this summer's

america's cup. andrew simpson, an olympic gold medalist and well-known figure in the sailing world, died after being trapped underneath the vessel. a desperate scene unfolded on the shore as paramedics tried to save his life. >> it's shocking, it's an experience to go through and we have a lot to deal with in the next few days in terms of assuring everybody's well-being. >> reporter: winds thursday were strong on the bay but not abnormal. it's one of the reasons san francisco bay is considered a sailor's nirvana and why the america's cup is being held here this summer. >> it's a tragic day. this is someone that's very well-known and well-regarded as an expert racer. and everyone worked really hard to not have this outcome. these are always difficult things to report. and our hearts go out to family and members of the racing team from the "artemis." >> reporter: it wasn't the first

mishap involving one of these yachts. last fall team "oracle" from the united states capsized its $8 million boat in a nearby part of the bay. but no one was seriously injured in the accident. the team had another close call in 2011 when a smaller catamaran pitch-pulled, sending sailors flying through the air. these boats are all harnessing new technology allowing them to travel faster than ever before. it's not immediately clear what caused the "artemis" boat to capsize, but with one of the sports star sailors dead and other high-profile incidents, the debate is growing whether these boats, engineering marvels they may be, are too dangerous for competition. dan simon, cnn, san francisco. >> and our thanks to dan for that report. new developments this morning in the jodi areas murder case. arias is now being held in a prison psychiatric ward. she's under constant supervision at the psych word at the lower

buckeye jail in phoenix. hln's dr. drew pinsky doesn't think arias is faking it. >> if somebody's in a psychiatric ward, a clinician takes that responsibility just to meet criteria to be there. that's not just a manipulation. on top of that, christi, i would say if i were the warden and i had somebody doing a news interview where she had just said, i want to die, boom, that person goes in a locked facility. >> the penalty face of the arias murder trial, which began just yesterday, has been postponed now until next wednesday. this morning, minnesota is one step closer to becoming the 12th state to allow same-sex marriage. supporters mobbed members of the state house chanting their thanks after the house voted in favor of letting gay couples marry. >> thank you, thank you, thank you! >> the state senate plans to consider the bill on monday. it is expected to pass there, as well. and governor has pledged to sign this measure into law. caught on camera. a wild shoot-out at close range

with police and suspected marijuana growers in miami. surveillance footage of this fierce gun battle last july surfaced yesterday. the video shows one of the suspects getting out of the car and shooting at police officers and fbi agents. a detective was seriously hurt in this, and the suspect gerard delgado was killed when police returned fire. police say they found 80 pounds of marijuana inside a grow house operated by the suspects. still ahead this morning, a controversial burial. boston bombing suspect tamerlan tsarnaev finally laid to rest at a secret gravesite. we'll have the latest details next.

welcome back. i'm zoraida sambolin, live in cleveland. the details emerging about the case of these three women held in captivity are just unthinkable. ariel castro's daughter said now her father is a monster. but was he always a monster? you know, neighbors here say that he was nice, he was a fun-loving man who enjoyed music, riding his motorcycle. coming up we're going to try to find out exactly who ariel castro is. we're going to take a look at the man behind the house of horrors. there are so many unanswered questions here, john. the community is really reeling. this is a man that they didn't know a lot about him, but what they did know certainly did not allude to what was happening inside of that house. and there's a lot of confusion. you know, there's also an issue here with perception about the people who live in this community. and we're going to talk a little bit about that later because the last thing they want is to be perceived, also, as monsters. >> people putting all the pieces together of this horrible case. all right, zoraida, thanks so

much. we have other news. new developments in the boston marathon bombing investigation, after weeks in a funeral home the body of boston bombing suspect tamerlan tsarnaev has finally been laid to rest. police in worcester, massachusetts, confirm that tsarnaev has been buried but they will not say where. the news comes as lawmakers in washington are grilling law enforcement about the bombings. cnn's paula newton has that part of the story. >> reporter: for the first time lawmakers in washington got a crack at parsing details of the boston bombings, and any intelligence failures, with republican chairman michael mccaul saying he feared the bombers succeeded because the system failed. boston police commissioner edward davis testified the fbi did not tell him russia had warned the u.s. of tamerlan tsarnaev, one of the bombing suspects. >> if you'd had this information before the bombing, would you have done, your police force, and you, would you have done anything differently?

>> that's very hard to say. we would certainly look at the information, we would certainly talk to the individual. >> reporter: but in a statement released after the hearing on thursday, the fbi said boston police officers serving on a joint terrorism task force, had access to a database that detailed the investigation into tsarnaev. as testimony unfolded in washington, the drama at this funeral home over. the body is gone, tamerlan tsarnaev has been buried in an undisclosed location. >> as a result of our public appeal for help, a courageous and compassionate individual came forward to provide the assistance needed to properly bury the deceased. his body is no longer in the city of worcester and is now entombed. >> reporter: tsarnaev's uncle ruslan tsarni confirms to cnn that he took his nephew's body out of state to be buried, and has not even told tamerlan's parents where their son has been laid to rest.

the internet, and software, and laptops. eight people charged in a cyber theft ring. they stole $42 million from banks all around the world. $2.8 million from banks in new york city. the attacks were in february, and in december. here's how they did it. they hacked into the banking system. they increased the money on people's cards, the limit on people's cards, and they transferred that information onto fake cards, and withdrew money from atms. basically any financial institution's worst nightmare. you had 4,000 separate transactions. u.s. attorney spoke at a press conference. here's what she had to say. >> the consumer really has two issues here. number one, this is an issue of security that affects every institution. really affects the industry as a whole. and the fact that as these attacks continue, the costs are likely to be passed onto them. >> and of course it's all about getting those account holders their money back. it's a process, and it could, of course, take some time. >> a lot of the money was spent

axiron. we are live in cleveland where the accused kidnapper and rapist ariel castro is behind bars and now he is talking. and who exactly is the man accused of heinous, inhumane crimes? we dig into the life, and the past, of ariel castro. >> first jodi arias was on suicide watch. this morning she is waking up in the psych ward. the latest developments in this ever-increasingly bizarre case. welcome back to this special edition of "early start" everyone. i'm john berman in new york. >> i'm zoraida sambolin live in cleveland for you this morning. prosecutors say ariel castro operated a private prison and a torture chamber inside this

house on the west side of cleveland. this was for the past ten years. the man who lived here, 2207 seymour avenue, right behind me, allegedly held three women captive inside, made his first court appearance yesterday. he was arraigned on kidnapping and rape charges and prosecutors plan to pursue an aggravated murder charge now for the alleged killing of one of his victim's fetuses. after yesterday's arraignment we're finding out a lot more about ariel castro. including an eerie first look at the backyard of his home. and a glimpse into his shadowy past. let's go live to pamela brown. she is outside the home of freed kidnap victim gina dejesus. good morning to you. >> good morning to you, zoraida. that's right. we are outside the home of the family of gina dejesus. you can see behind me there are batches of balloons here. there's been a big outpouring of support from the community. and also, the blue tarp. this is so that gina dejesus can go into her backyard and have some privacy. our anderson cooper spoke to her

yesterday and her aunt says that right now she's just trying to adapt back to a normal way of life, simple things like listening to the birds chirp. listening to the wind howl. things that we might take for granted, these are the things that gina dejesus and the other women have to readapt to. let's take a listen to what sandra ruiz told our anderson cooper last night. >> she's in great spirits. you know, finally some people listen, and she spent an hour and a half outside and i've never seen her -- i mean it's just exciting. >> what -- i mean how is the family doing? to have her back? >> words cannot express, cannot express, the joy that we have. >> and, pam, we heard a lot about michelle knight, who is still in the hospital, and about the unspeakable pain that she has suffered. you know, perhaps being forced

to miscarry. could you tell us about these additional charges now that castro could face because of that? >> yes. we heard from the county prosecutor yesterday, and essentially we're learning that officials are looking at case law, that they're studying case law, looking at all the evidence that they have that could support aggravated murder charges. this is in connection, as you mention there, zoraida, to these alleged miscarriages that michelle knight reported to police. knight said that she was pregnant at least five times, and that when castro would find out, he would hit her in the stomach and starve her so that she would have miscarriages. so, authorities are looking into whether they can file these aggravated murder charges against castro, in addition to the four kidnapping charges, and three rape charges he faces. and of course if he does face aggravated murder charges, that he could face the death penalty. >> and pamela we're also learning that castro may have written about all of his alleged crimes in 2004. do you have some details for us

on what he wrote? >> we do, zoraida. according to our affiliate woio, a reporter there, scott taylor, ariel castro wrote in these notes that the women, they are against -- or that they're here against their will because they made the mistake of getting in a car with a total stranger. we're hearing from sources that this was a diary of his actions. that castro gave a detailed account of his actions, and the reasons behind his actions. basically, justifying them after he allegedly abducted the women, and kept them chained in his basement. and also he talked about being abused by family -- by a family member as justification for his actions, and also, according to sources, he talked about thoughts of suicide in these documents. >> all right, pamela brown live outside gina dejesus' house. thank you very much. we are also hearing for the

first time from the daughter of ariel castro. angie gregg spoke exclusively with cnn's laurie segall. she recalls the disgust that she felt the moment that she heard what he had done. >> it was like everything crashed down. like i just wanted to melt into the floor. i just wanted to die. i have no problem cutting him out of my life. i have no problem with that. i never want to see him again. >> despite the anger and all of the heartbreak that she now feels, castro's daughter says that her father was generous to her and her sister, even giving her a puppy. and a clearer picture this morning of how all of this happened. the man who was engaged to ariel castro's former wife says there were signs throughout the years that he could be a monster. cnn's brian todd has more. >> looking down and despondent, ariel castro hears the words from the judge hearing he wouldn't get out of jail any time soon.

>> bond is ate at $2 million on each case. >> reporter: with four cases against him, that means his bond is $8 million. his defense attorney says he doesn't have any money. castro doesn't respond as she speaks to him. the prosecutor has plenty to say about how castro allegedly treated amanda berry, gina dejesus and michelle knight while they were held in his house. >> there were repeated beatings. they were bound. they were restrained. sexually assaulted, basically never free to leave this residence. >> reporter: the details get more horrifying in a police incident report obtained by cnn. one of the women held captive, michelle knight, said she was pregnant five times but was starved and punched until he eventually miscarried. according to the police report, amanda berry said the 6-year-old girl she gave birth to inside the house is ariel castro's child. a source familiar with the investigation tells cnn when berry went into labor, castro ordered michelle knight to deliver the child.

the baby was delivered in a plastic tub, or pool, to contain the mess. and the source says once the child was born there were moments of horror and panic. the child stopped breathing and everyone screamed and ariel castro allegedly threatened to kill michelle knight if the baby didn't survive. according to the report, michelle knight said she breathed into the child's mouth to keep her alive. the revelation that the women were bound, that chains and ropes were in the home, is consistent with the accounts of fernando colon. he was engaged to grimilda figueroa, ariel castro's ex-wife, until her death last year. colon told me castro would beat figueroa mercilessly, sometimes with barbells. >> she told me she was locked in the house, he had tinted the windows, she had padlocked the doors. the only time she was able to come out was for her appointments, that was it. >> reporter: but fernando colon could have motivation for accusing ariel castro. colon was convicted of molesting two of castro's children several years ago.

he has long said he's innocent. claims ariel castro ark straighted the charges against him to deflect attention from castro's own alleged crimes. colon is now planning to appeal his conviction. the three kidnap victims said they never left castro's property but there are counts that castro did take the little girl out. moses cintron says he occasionally saw castro with the 6-year-old in a neighborhood park. the girl, he says, wouldn't play with other children. but would pet his small dogs. >> she was well-dressed, you know, and well cared of. slightly slender, but, you know, she was also kind of white. >> reporter: cintron now says he'd like to take one of his dogs to the girl to let her play with it so she won't have to come back to that park. brian todd, cnn, cleveland. >> and we are also hearing for the very first time from the mother of ariel castro. liliana rodriguez made a tearful plea for forgiveness to the

young women and their mothers, saying i suffer because they suffered. >> translator: i have a sick son who has done something serious. i'm suffering very much. i ask for forgiveness from those mothers. may those girls forgive me. i suffer the pain they suffered. i'm suffering for my son's pain. my son is sick and i have nothing to do with what my son did. >> may the girls forgive me, she says. and castro is charged with four counts of kidnapping and three counts of rape. the discovery of the three women held captive is sparking outrage from the community leaders. several meetings were held in the neighborhood last night, where residents voiced their complaints about crime in this community. one gathering was hosted by a group called imperial women, which is named after 11 female victims of a strangler found back in 2009. the daughter of a missing woman whose body was found at the end of march blames the mayor and the police.

>> the mayor has done nothing. the cops have done nothing. no one is doing anything for black people in my neighborhood. i live in this neighborhood. i raise my children in this neighborhood. and no one is doing anything. no one seems to care. and we have had enough. enough is enough. enough is enough! enough is enough! enough is enough! enough is enough! enough is enough! >> they are reassured -- police met with another group at another outreach community last night reassuring them that they are doing the best that they can do in order to try to keep all of these neighborhoods safe. ear going to have a guest coming up, john, and we're going to talk about that, about, you know, this, this -- the difference in what the community is saying versus what the police are saying about crime in this area, about the response from the police department, and you know, try to shed some light on that for everyone. >> all right. thanks so much, zoraida. we do have some breaking news to report.

miraculous breaking news. a woman has been found alive in the rubble of a collapsed factory building in bangladesh. this is 17 -- i'm sorry, 16 days, 16 days after this building collapsed. this comes on the day of a tragic milestone. the death toll from that collapse 16 days ago is now 1,039. workers continuing to sift through the rubble there. this bit of good news may mean there are still more survivors there. this is the deadliest industrial disaster in that country's history. again, the breaking news this morning, 16 days after that collapse, they have pulled a woman from that rubble alive. we will get more details on that as soon as we can, and bring you this really truly amazing news. other top stories we're following. a canadian man who allegedly wanted to spread terror through the u.s. and start his own terror network is now in custody in new york. ahmed abassi was arrested and charged with lying to immigration authorities. investigators say abassi

radicalized one of the suspects in a plot to blow up a passenger train in canada. new developments this morning in the jodi arias murder case. arias is waking up this morning in a prison psychiatric ward under constant supervision. this after she admitted she wants to die after a jury convicted her of first degree murder. also arias will not be in court today. the sentencing phase of her trial has been postponed until next wednesday. smoke jumpers fighting forest fires in oregon have led police to a marijuana growing operation allegedly run by mexican drug traffickers. sheriff's raided the site tuesday, wiping out more than 1500 plants, finding several guns, as well. police are warning hikers who use public lands in oregon to be careful of these illegal marijuana growers because their operators are known to carry weapons. so when an alligator takes a bite out of crime, yeah, it's got to hurt. a florida gator did not appreciate a suspect hiding from sheriff's deputies in his creek

killed when his yacht crashed in san francisco bay yesterday, trapping him underwater for about ten minutes. this is the second violent crash of a high-speed yacht in just the last seven months. police will not say where, but the body of boston bombing suspect tamerlan tsarnaev has finally been laid to rest. for weeks funeral directors could not find a cemetery that would accept tsarnaev's body. police in worcester, massachusetts, released a statement thanking a quote, courageous and compassionate individual who offered up the burial site. tsarnaev's uncle says his nephew was buried outside of massachusetts. minnesota is one step closer to becoming the 12th state to allow same-sex marriage after the house voted in favor of letting gay couples marry there. the state senate plans to consider the bill monday, and is expected to pass the senate, too. governor mark dayton of minnesota has pledged to sign this into law. so looks like some big changes are in store for "american idol." randy jackson who has been a judge on the show since it started is calling it quits. the once powerhouse singing

everybody here is just, you know, in shock, and they're so happy for these families. the outpouring of support for the three victims in cleveland has been overwhelming. the police now is asking for help in letting the three women recover from their ordeal. hundreds of people turned out to welcome home the two women who so far have returned to their families. now police are asking that they be left alone. any cards or gifts or amanda berry, except for cash, they say, should be dropped off at the police department's first district on west 130th street. any cards or gifts for gina dejesus and michelle knight should be dropped off at the second district. that is on fulton road. financial contributions are being handled separately. so money donations can be made at any key bank under the name the courage fund. a lot of people are trying to figure out how they can help. they're going in swarms over to the houses, and now you have an opportunity, also, to help with this particular fund that's being set up that will go to the victims. john, back to you.
