don't mess with queen b. and live in the cnn newsroom. >> good morning, thank you so much for being with me. i'm carol cost tello. this morning's top story may be lurking in the skies above you. severe weather bearing down on half of the country. and there is concern, especially in the nation's midsection. tornado season spun from quiet to catastrophic since last week. a tornado ripping across central kansas last night. one of seven recorded across the state. cnn meteorologist indra peter so sons in the weather center. what's going on? >> absolutely unbelievable. the wild weather, not just in the middle of the country. it's literally coast to coast out there.

>> monster. >> reporter: late tuesday, a new round of tornadoes ripped through the heartland. this massive twister tore through kansas, leaving downed trees and power lines in its wake. and shawn casey, storm watcher, reported live on cnn there. >> shawn, you are chasing the tornado right now. what's going on? >> this is my first interview while looking at a tornado. so -- we were hoping it will come up on our road and we will drive right up to the center. >> reporter: just one day before, casey's team captured rare and frightening video of a tornado in smith county, kansas. supercell thunderstorms, damaging winds and hail threaten a number of states from texas to new england today. in the plains, strong damaging tornadoes are possible. an area like oklahoma, already

littered with damage, meteorologist warn of high wind gusts kicking up and carrying dangerous debris across the area. meanwhile, further north, severe weather in michigan and pennsylvania overnight. damage reported outside detroit and nearery, pennsylvania. and on the west coast, a different kind of weather danger. dry conditions fueling wildfires in santa barb wra, california. scorching over 1,800 acres. farther south in valencia, helicopters attack a blaze from above, as those near the magic mountain theme park burned 2,500 acres. and east of the fire this massive duststorm brings traffic to a standstill. in the northeast, weather whiplash from snow to four days ago, to what could be a record-breaking heat wave. temperatures rising double digits across most of the region. a lot of whacky weather out

ago. >> an arizona mother of seven returns to a mexican courtroom trying to get her freedom. she's been sitting in a mexican jail for a week. mexican police owe sishls say she was smuggling 12 pounds of pot on a bus headed back to the united states. her family insists she was framed. maldonado is holding on. >> i think -- i don't know. i know she's scared. i know she really wants to be let free. i know she -- she's scared. >> we have more from casey wian. >> reporter: good morning, carol. it's heart wrenching talking to family members of yanira ma maldona maldonado, who say she is wrongly jailed in mexico.

yanira mall donaldo's family hoped she would be released on tuesday. but the mormon mother of seven will remain in a mexican jail at least another day. the family insists she has no involvement drugs and is being framed. >> whoever was the cause of this, that's who i am angry at. the people that took my mom. they put her in prison. without having evidence. >> reporter: maldonado arrested last week after mexican authorities said they found 12 pounds of marijuana under the seat of a commercial bus she was riding home with from a funeral with her husband gary. gary was asked to pay $5,000 bribe for his wife's freedom. as he was trying to raise the money, she was shipped off to jail. they are encouraged by the

evidence raised in court so far. they have a notoriously corrupt judicial system. >> the judicial system there is even more corrupt than the police. when are you brought into a judicial proceeding, you don't get to face your accuser no, automatic right for-to-a lawyer. may be held before you are brought to trial for some weeks. and u.s. a closed proceeding. >> the judge has the ability to hold maldonado in prison for four months before trial. that would likely bring more pressure from u.s. authorities. jeff glak says senator flake has been in contact with the family and officials in mexico and the u.s. regarding the case. he will continue to monitor the situation. that situation resumed in a mexican courtroom in morning.

a key day for maldonado and her family. attorneys are expected to cross-examine the mexican military officers who apprehended her. >> casey wian reporting from arizona this morning. we're hearing from passengers aboard the fiery royal caribbean cruise ship, and needless to say, they are not happy. investigators are trying to to fin out what cause the fire. many of them are happy to be back on dry land. >> reporter: three days before their vacation was scheduled to end, the first of 2,200 royal caribbean cruise ship passengers returned safely to the port of baltimore tuesday. the "grandeur of the seas" journey cut short by a fire on board at 3:00 a.m. monday morning. >> terrifying at first. >> in the water you could see the flow of the fire, we had no idea how big the fire was.

>> people were just in shock. early, and wondering what was going on. >> reporter: sam passengers said when they saw lifeboats lowered, they thought the grandeur of the seas was sinking. the latest scare in what is a string of debacles for the cruise industry. last year, 32 people died when the costa concordia capsized off the coast italy. carnival triumph stranded passengers in the gulf of mexico on february, and the "dream" left others without power in march. executive director richard burke says the incident doesn't spell out a pattern for the industry. >> they are among the safest ships afloat. >> reporter: the latest black eye intensifies a public relations problem they face, but attorney john hickey says passengers have little recourse in might marchish vacations. >> if passengers don't have physical injuries or the threat of physical injury, they are basically your honor the terms of the ticket, and they are not able to sue.

>> reporter: full refunds and vouchers to "grandeur of the sea" passengers. and some will cruise again. >> we are joined from washington. i'm still wondering, what caused the fire? >> you know, carol. royal caribbean doesn't yet know what caused the the fire. i have heard people say it happened in a strange area of the ship. usually they happen in the engine rooms or in the kitchen, but the ship right now is being dry docked in the bahamas and will undergo repairs while the royal caribbean investigates what happens, as well as the national transportation safety board and the coast guard. but, carol, i had say in talking to passengers yesterday as cnn did they were all very happy with royal caribbean's prompt response. >> well, i guess that's good. i'm sure you will continue investigating. thank you so much. a huge fire at the site of a train derailment in baltimore

under control. it was caused by a garbage truck slamming into a csx train, and the crash set off a huge explosion. >> backup! oh, my gosh! >> oh, yeah, seven cars skidding off the track this man working nearby. >> are you always in a state of shock. hear the trains go by every day and just trying to get used to the sound of the train going by, and after a while, you realizith a whole lot louder than usually. and you see train cards often the side sliding off the track and almost in disbelief. we kind of walked out to the front door and as soon as you cracked the door, you could feel the heat, it hit you in the face. >> officials don't think there is any danger from toxins, but public shelters are open for people, and about 70 homes nearby.

amazingly, only the truck's driver hurt. in the hospital, in serious, but stable condition. strong reports on housing confidence drew big games in the market yesterday, another record slow for the dow. will the market continue with the joyride. alison kosik, good morning. >> carol, talked about the record high closing for the dow. 23 for the year. as far as the day goes, may be tough to get to 24. stocks will open lower when the opening bell rings in 20 minutes. funny thing for the rally for the dow. central bankers around the world continue with the stimulus to prop up global economic growth. xhek indicators here in the u.s. were positive, housing numbers and housing price numbers and consumer confidence numbers were higher, so you are going to see wall street get back to a huge line of thinking that good news is bad news, because the worry now is that the fed will pull back its stimulus.

ire of a former nfl player, two nfl players, and bieber is refusing to talk with sheriff's deputies about the second speeding incident in two months. justin bieber is known for wowing crowds all over the world. but he has his neighbors upset. they accuse the singer of speeding through the neighborhood at breakneck speed. the los angeles county sheriff's department is investigating the latest incident. >> we got a couple of calls from two witnesses that say they saw justin bieber driving recklessly in his white ferrari inside the gated community known as the oaks. this kind of behavior, if, in fact, it did happen. it cannot be done by anybody at any time, anywhere.

>> reporter: the sheriff's department says bieber refused to speak with deputies sent to investigate. prompting this plea. >> please talk to us, tell us what you believe occurred. >> reporter: tmz reports that bieber shut the door on someone else who wanted to ring his bell. key shon johnson, former nfl star. he was sitting in his car with his child when bieber sped by. he later reportedly confronted the young popstar outside his house, but bieber fled inside. possibly showing better judgment than he did while driving his ferrari, in calabasas, neighbors are mostly concerned about the damage he could do behind the wheel. and the d.a.'s office in los angeles is still investigating an incident in march, where he was accused of spitting on a neighbor who confronted him for speeding and it looks like the latest incident turned over to the d.a.'s office as well. so far no comment from bieber's camp. and i checked out the twitter

burst? cnn business guru christine romans in new york. sounds kind of scary to me. >> it is a rebound, carol. what a rebound looks like, pretty hot and bubbly in certain zip codes, and you are getting talk about here we are in 2007. some zip codes that look like bubble time once again. look at san francisco. altruia says san francisco overvalued, so is l.a., san antonio, san antonio, portland, austin, houston. all of those look overvalued. what's happening in some places, some tony neighborhoods like greenwich, connecticut, doing pocket listings. that means they are not even advertising publicly what homes are for sale. privately letting people know to outbid each other and something else called flash sales, where suddenly almost having an auction for a property to see how high they could get the price to go one example of that. i want you to watch.

>> we literally in line to go in the house and a line waiting for us to get out of house this market is by far the craziest that i've seen. >> carol, let me be very clear, most of the real stores say it's not a bubble again. in a few areas, have you low inventory, cash buyers, international investors coming in buying five, six, seven, eight, nine properties, that's where are you seeing the action. the average joe or jane like you or i, it's not a bubble. still having a little trouble getting out from under our other house still underwater. >> have most americans, average joes as you say, have they gotten away from the idea that your house is your major investment? has that totally disappeared? >> i wouldn't say totally disappeared. home ownership rates have fallen and a lot of people say, you know what? i'm going to rent. i might have to move for my job or get a better job and i want

to be able to move to california or texas or someplace elsewhere jobs are growing and they don't want to be saddled with a mortgage, and a lot of people -- millions of people still underwater on their loans. they can't sell their house and buy a new one right now. it's still underwater. look, mortgage rates declining for several years. ticked up a little bit, but still very low as you know. people are really -- the number one easiest way for people to play the real estate market, is to make sure you refinance the mortgage have you now to put money in your pocket. no question, a recovering housing market, putting money in the economy, adding to consumer confidence and the housing market recovery is real. in a few places, might be a bubble. but i wouldn't call it a bubble overall. >> i don't want to go through that again! christine romans, thank you so much. still ahead in the "newsroom," jurors in the jodi arias case breaking their silence. why they say they won't be disappointed if arias doesn't

and the house oversight committee pushing forward into the benghazi talking points. lawmakers subpoenaed the state department to get unreleased e-mails and paperwork that is beneficial, including communication from then state-department spokesperson vick norra nuland. 100 e-mails have been released about those talking point. but there are more questions. they accused administration of trying to mislead the public for political gain, a claim democrats denied. and the ambassador christopher stevens and three other americans were killed. the republican controlled house committee investigating attorney general eric holder to see if he lied under noth. he signed off in 2010 to obtain e-mails from a fox news reporter with classified information on north korea. we found out about that last week. but holder denied ever trying to prosecute thes press for obtaining lease information.

>> we need to protect the ability of the press to engage in its first amendment responsibility. i would suggest with regard to the potential prosecution of the press for the disclosure material that is not something that i have ever been involved in or heard of or think would be a wise policy. >> the department of justice did label the fox reporter james rosen as the possible coconspirator in the north korea lake, but never filed charges. after sitting through five months of gory testimony in the jodi arias trial, some jurors are stipilling the beans on the inner workers. alternate juror would have voted for the death penalty. the jury deadlocked 8-4. but we were told that they won't be disappointed if arias does not get the death penalty. >> we have to make sure she is treated within our criminal

"newsroom," 33 minute past the hour. big gam big gains yesterday, the markets opening lower. alison kosik, good morning. >> count them up, 23 record closes for the dow this year. number 24, yes, it may have to wait. stocks are beginning in the red. dow down 95 points. not much new information to trade on today, you may see this profit taking happen throughout the session today. plus, yesterday's good news, yeah, it could turn into today's bad news. here is why. an improving u.s. economy makes some investors worried that the federal reserve will pull back its financial support of the economy too early. that support, it's been a huge factor in this year's big rally. as we head into today, though, the dow up more than 17% from the year and every time it feels like stocks will be headed for a pullback, they end up yet another record high. not sure that will happen again, we said this before, still in the loss we see holds, it will be the third loss in five

know? >> unfortunately, yes, ma'am. that is. and that's, of course -- extremely frustrating part of the case is that we don't have a suspect, we don't have a motive. you know, we're kin of starting at ground zero. >> and there must be some fear that this kind of thing could happen again? >> it is. obviously, the officers in this area are on edge. our community is on edge. because we know -- we certainly have a person who is still at large with the capabilities and obviously the ability to commit murder in this style, so our community is -- is very much obviously supporting us to catch this person as badly as we want to catch this person. >> in a previous interview, you promised an eye for an eye. you said you will not rest until you have the suspect in cuffs or on the front side of a weapon.

you don't often hear police officers put it quite that way. why did you? >> well, i meant what i said. i have never been a politically correct person. i've been known to tell people what they need to hear, not necessarily what they want to hear. obviously, we want these people arrested, and we want them convicted. by my statement, i'm letting these people know that obviously the way they did this, they were cowards to hide and ambush, and i want this person to know that if that's the way they want to continue this, we are more than prepared. more than prepared to do whatever -- use whatever force is necessary, whatever resources i have availability le to take into custody. we absolutely don't want more violence. but we as police will certainly do what we have to do to -- to

background check. the question is, did they pay this organization and why was the name thrown in there at the last minute? >> what would you like to see happen? >> first of all, we would like to see what was the procedure for recruiting an athletic director. when you look at her background, i know as far as koich coaches are concerned. i was raised in newark, new jersey. you know, we talked a little of that language years ago within i was youngerment now, you are looking for a standard with our youngsters and our athletes about role molds, so i think we have to look at that, the other thing is, i'm not sure if a signed contract has really been consummated here as far as her future is concerned. i'm not sure if it's an economic issue that we also have to deal with. when you look at her background and some of the things she might have said or done as compared to the previous athletic director,

good morning. >> good morning, carol, finding this ruby stefania smith's body in this hotel room just neighbor camp le jeune is really, lick you said, another tragic turn in a case going on since sunday. sunday morning is when this rampage started at 4:30 a.m. in eden, texas. a woman was shot in her vehicle, injured. about ten minutes later, two more people shot in their vehicles in brady, texas. the police allege that lance corporeal smith went back to eden, injured another person the same way, shooting that person inside his vehicle. then around 6:00 a.m., a fourth person, 41-year-old alicia torres shot and killed inside her vehicle. at this point police say smith fleeing, driving on the interstate when he got in a shootout with the sheriff of
