terrifying, terrifying. >> good morning. welcome to "early start." >> i'm christie romans. itis 5:00 a.m. in the east. >> we begin with top secret nsa programs. the source of the leak, 29-year-old edward snowden back in the shadows. he's said to be in hong kong. where exactly is unclear. the white house welcomes debate over the surveillance programs and it's open to changes if the debate shows the public wants them. but, a just released survey says most americans don't have an issue with being tracked. joe johns explains. >> reporter: investigators are scouring the personal life of edward snowden to see if anyone helped him gather sensitive documents to expose the top

rounds of ammunition when he shot and killed his father and brother and set their house on fire. after randomly shooting at strangers in cars, the suspect was shot and killed by police. the military judge is expected to rule on a request by hassan for a three-month delay in his court-martial. last week, he ruled hassan can represent himself. if convicted, he faces life in prison or perhaps the death penalty. from heat waves out west to tornadoes and riptides to the east, the extreme weather continues this morning. what's happening out there? >> it's unbelievable. more tornadoes pummel the southeast in kentucky and maryland. we are taking a look at extreme weather across the country.

leaving many in maryland at a standstill. at the u.s. open in pennsylvania, it dampered hopes on the green. the first day of practice officials closed the course for hours. in golf shores, alabama. rip currents were to blame for four drownings. in the west, a different picture. a challenge for firefighters trying to combat the silver fire. that's pushed many residents to evacuate their homes. the national weather service issued red flag warnings across the west in california and new mexico. the fire near new mexico score ched 1500 acres. a different picture on the eastern sea where we had heavy rains. storm reports and tornado reports out there. much of the weather pushing off to the east. up state new york and northern

new england, more heavy rain kicking out of the area. showers an inch or two possible. nothing as strong as yesterday. where the severe weather threat is going to be, where the warm air merges with the drier air, looking at montana and indiana. kind of like a sliver where we could see the threat of severe weather. it's a slight risk today. the heat is still on all the way to the west coast. we are talking temperatures really hiding. average, 81. salt lake city, 90. phoenix, so hot. so many people in arizona complaining. 110 degrees. i don't know. definitely too hot for me. >> it's a dry heat. >> sure. >> with 110, it's just 110. >> thank you so much. appreciate it. we have breaking news in turkey. police in riot gear are facing off with protesters using tear gas and water cannons.

this marks the 12th day of protest there. so far, 5,000 people have been injured in the protests, three people killed. knick is live for us from istanbul. what is the scene like for us right now? >> reporter: right now, john, as the tur kish prime minister is speaking, behind me, substantial numbers of riot police moved in around the protest. let's go back. at 8:00 this morning, they moved in, slowly walking, then began clashes between protesters, used armored vehicles, fire water cannons at them. one was disabled by a protesters molotov bomb cocktail. many rocks thrown. hit back by tear gas. the police are using tear gas not with the same relentlessness

as before. there's less violence than over a week ago. now we are seeing that central protest. the green space in the heart of istanbul, the protection at the heart of this protest spiralled into other issues. that is being left alone. police won't be approaching it. we are seeing interesting pictures of a number of armored police vehicles, four or five, by my count, forming a circle and many riot police moving in, too. the police have a strategy here. they are clearing away barricades, bulldozers and beginning to mask in front of that protest. john? >> it does have the appearance of a combustible situation. the turkish prime minister set to meet with protesters tomorrow. what are we expecting from these meetings? >> reporter: this, behind me is

proving his negotiating position. he's had no tone since he began. he called the protesters looters, marginals. the mark of something to be proud about in many ways. he's not sounding conciliatory as he speaks now. unless we see, i'm sorry, we are seeing a water cannon now being used behind me. i can hear some blasts that suggest, yes, tear gas. people are beginning to run. that's what we have seen quite frequently. i have experienced this gas myself. very hard to breathe, significant effect on your eyes. clearing away the square. what you are seeing in that cloud of gas, 50 to 100 meters away. to the left, head out toward the

green area where they are. these people running away now. the police, it seems, massing absolutely clear they want control of the square. showing no signs of negotiations. meeting protesters tomorrow. it doesn't have a clear leader or iconic leader. in many ways, it's an expression of a load of grievances. >> nick, remarkable pictures from behind you. we are seeing people dispurse. the tear gas canisters are exploding there. we can see the giant cloud of smoke. are you safe where you are? is that smoke or tear gas coming anywhere near you? >> reporter: we are fine. if it comes here, i will have to reach for a gas mask. this is very thick. this is the most i have seen used. the net effect is clearing

fleeing the outskirts of the square. i understand the prime minister just finished speaking. he's in a tough spot. what did he have to say? >> remarkable, actually. as he was talking, we saw the cloud of gas in the square. we heard he said the protests are not democratic. he claimed 95% of the folks didn't know where the place was until the protests started. they have been hijacked by various groups to push forward their agenda. there was a broader conspiracy against turkey and his administration. he said they have always tried to listen to the people who haven't voted for him. i should stress, half of turkey did vote for him. he is democratically voted in. the 50% feel like their way of life, the secular lifestyle is being oppressed by the creeping conservatism many criticized the

today, we are dealing with rain on the east coast. it's trying to move offshore where we are dealing with more of the rain. up state new york and up into maine. here is what it looks like over the next 48 hours. one to two inches for the new york area. new england, the low wraps around the moisture. heavy rain up to four inches. today, the slight risk area of severe weather, we watch the boundary between the warm air and cold, dry air. the sliver in between. montana through indiana is where we are looking for thunderstorms to be popping, especially through late afternoon today. otherwise, the big storm, we keep talking about it. it's the heat. above normal temperatures are spreading to the east. forget the rain in the southern states. we are talking high temperatures. out west, we have the fire danger, red flag warnings and the temperatures aren't getting better. high heat, low humidity and winds not making for a good

nick paton walsh is live in istanbul. the tear gas when you're not on camera you're trying to use your gas mask to keep the exposure to a minimum. what is happening there now? >> reporter: in the last two minutes the police have moved in with significant amount of tear gas to disperse protesters who were gathering in front of the park and conservationalists. they're now mafg in a large group towards the center of taksim square filing out. they've been using water cannons and tear gas to push back. the clouds of tear gas fill the sky, people running in different directions just scattering to get away from this very toxic fumes, but the police in quite substantial presence actually moving out, fanning out, using their armored vehicles to clear

ground. they appear to have some sort of strategy to push people from the roads around that central park and they have hearing loud blasts that seem to be stun grenades as police escalate the kinds of weapons they're willing to use to push rouds back. the question what are the riot police actually going to do. we're hearing the armored vehicles reverse, that's the beeping you're hearing, that blast another stun grenade the police seem to be using. they're using the armored vehicle with the police in that direction. protesters quite adept at throwing back at the police the teargas grenades that are fired at them. it's interesting to work out quite where they'll be moving, facing toward that crowd. when the protest began the police and authorities are interested in regaining control
