it's 5:00 in the east. in colorado, crews are battling five separate fires across the state. the most troublesome, the black forest fire near colorado springs. it's consumed 7500 acres and forced the evacuation of some 5,000 homes. fire crews get no help from mother nature this morning. conditions are extremely hot and dry with gusty winds. dan simon high on the fire lines for us in colorado springs, colorado. good morning. >> reporter: hi, christine, we're about a mile or two away from the fire. i can tell you it's pretty smoky out here. not the easiest conditions to breathe. i'll tell you what, this fire shows absolutely no signs of letting up. we're expecting high temperatures today and high winds so this could be a very difficult day. raging wildfires across colorado are forcing thousands to get out of harm's way. >> get out now! >> reporter: the black forest fire south of denver multiplying

in size in just hours, and engulfing thousands of acres in its path. the thick billowing smoke visible for miles. massive flames consumes dozens of buildings in this heavily wooded area. >> we are still at zero containment. the fire is still pretty well scattered. it's not just one wall of fire. >> reporter: firefighters say record-high winds and high temperatures are fueling the fast-moving fires. >> with night fall, we hope that the wins have certainly died down since earlier today. >> reporter: the black forest fire, at least one of the fires ablaze in colorado, 150 firefighters aid in the battle. >> we have other fires around the state draining the resources but right now, i cannot be more pleased with the aid we've received >> reporter: this area is no stranger to fires. the waldo canyon fire killed

two. >> we're experienced with wildfires. >> reporter: and colorado was not alone. in northern california a firefighter was killed while fighting a wildfire caused by lightning. lightning was the cause of another fire near kingston, new mexico. and earlier, not showing any signs of slowing down. well, this fire has already taken out or damaged dozens of homes, no official count right now. one of the big challenges today is resources with several fires burning throughout the state. they have to get more folks in, i'm sure that will happen today. right now, christine, this fire has zero percent containment. >> whoa, that's not good. dan, not everyone heeded evacuation orders, right? some people are having trouble getting out. what are officials telling them to do now? >> reporter: well, i have to tell you, their experience with wildfires in this area, so people generally have a good sense of when to stay, when to

leave. at this point, they're telling folks, if you haven't left, now is the time to really -- stressing that people need to take this fire seriously. hopefully, more people do that today. we don't have a precise number in terms of the number of people who stayed in their homes but apparently there are a few who stayed so hopefully those people will heed those warnings, christine. >> can the fire crews count on any help from the weather today. good morning. >> good morning. unfortunately, it looks like the heat will still be on. the bigger problem is how dry it is out there. we see the red flag warnings around the area. there's a chance of thunderstorms later on in the week, it's so dry. it looks like the real threat could be more lightning. i want to show you the contrast here. look how warm it is. notice we see 90s and 70s on the other side. there's a big temperature difference there. with that, the bigger weather story should be the severe weather.

a briefing at the capital that the national security agency doesn't know a real irony says former justice department official andrew mcbride. >> on one hand, the nsa is collecting all of this information, and we have liberties on the other hand, they don't know where this guy is. >> reporter: chief both the national security agency and the u.s. cybercommander, heading to capitol hill hill and can expect a grilling this afternoon. at least one member said he was surprised by the scope of the surveillance program. >> i did not know one billion records a day were coming understand the control of the federal executive branch. >> reporter: it's part of the growing outcry for the government to make more information available to the public about its secret phone and internet tracking program. and it's not just politicians. internet giants, google, microsoft and facebook are calling for greater transparency, and permission to tell the public what they gave

out. and lawsuits are threatening including the aclu challenging the constitution nalt of the phone program. suspected leaker edward snowden said he wants that debate. >> the public needs to decide whether these programs or policies are right or wrong. and i'm willing to go on the record to defend the authenticity of them and say i didn't change these. i didn't modify the story. this is the truth. this is what's happening. you should decide whether we need to be doing this. >> reporter: while a law enforcement official says there's no time frame for when charges will be filed, legal experts say the most likely charge is unauthorized disclosure of classified information under the epps upon 1/2 act. >> there's one felony that clearly applies and that's the disclosure felony which has a ten-year max. so you can stack those up any way you want, under the sentencing guidelines, basically, he's looking at ten years. >> with the alleged misconduct

limes, celebrations also in protests. our correspondents have been on the ground in the thick of all of this, covering every flare-up, let's take a live look at taksim square. there has been cleanup there this morning. now we're seeing riot police out there. arwa damon joins us live from istanbul, overlooking taksim square. good morning, arwa. >> reporter: good morning, john, and the scene here quite different as to what it was 24 hours ago. but what we are seeing this morning is the gezi park demonstrators. they barricades themselves from the park to the front entrance. the entrance that is closest to where the riot police are lined up. there have been been any clashes so far this morning. but just take a look at some of the images that show what happened just last night. >> reporter: we've been watching all day, tear gas, fires, molotov cocktails, filling the

air in the heart of the city. >> reporter: we don't know what sparked this police move but some sort of altercation. they've been seeing that all day. there's no reason why that would trigger such a response by police. >> reporter: we're in the park right now, putting our gas tasks on once again because there's more tear gas. you can see -- people are trying to help us out, because of the tear gas. the entire front part of the park right now has been cleared out because of the intensity of what was just fired in. >> reporter: in the center of the city, fueling so much of the popular response. >> reporter: up to this point, it's kind of building up step-by-step. the government and prime minister is trying to get -- >> reporter: there doesn't seem to be a specific police plan to retain control over this part of the city. >> reporter: violence is just

evolving in the last few minutes. and riot police push their way forwards, down the side street, running on the park in that direction. there's now tear gas coming into the park. [ indiscernible yelling ] >> reporter: not tear gas, but instead, fireworks. lots of tear gas in the air. a substantial police presence. in the very center of the square itself. and, of course, the question remains what exactly is the ending here. >> now, the prime minister is supposed to be holding a meeting in the turkish capital in ankara in just a few hours. but what the government is saying, if individuals -- some of the people who have been part of the protests, but we spoke with one man who is a member of the taksim solidarity platform. that is the core umbrella group that is responsible for the gezi

park demonstrations. he said that they were not even formally invited. and that all those who would be attending this meeting were effectively people who allied themselves with the government. he was saying for those individuals, the protesters that have really been a part of this from the very beginning, they by and large believe that negotiating, speaking with the government at this point in time, would be completely fruitless, because of the government's heavy-handed attitude, use of force, towards these demonstrators. but also because of the government, the prime minister's rhetoric towards these demonstrators as well. >> and the prime minister's party calling for counterdemonstrations over the week. it's hard to see how the protesters will count them sitting down with the leaders today. arwa damon in that square. thank you for being with us today. president obama travels to boston to meet with ed markey running for senate.

is scheduled to be arraigned on more than 300 counts. this is the cleveland man accused of kidnapping and holding three women captive for close to ten years. our pamela brown reports. >> reporter: it's our first glimpse into the so-called house of horrors where ariel castro allegedly held gina dejesus, amanda berry and michelle wright for more than a decade. the fbi re-creating the terrible scene. this video from our affiliate wyio shows a disco ball hanging in castro's front room. wednesday, castro is making a second court appearance, facing an astounding 329 charges, including aggravated murder. >> the vast number of charges is the prosecutor's way of signaling this is a very important and heinous case. >> reporter: his defense attorney told cnn that castro will plead not guilty in all of the charges in this indictment

of which he's accused of using vacuum cords, chains and gates to retain the girls in his basement. and with the design caused the unlawful termination of michelle wright's unborn baby. and this contains half the time the girls were held, meaning more charges are likely. meaning the prosecutor's office is playing a balancing act. >> what maucks this case unusual, as much as prosecutors want to throw the book at castro, they also have to consider the needs of the victims who may not want to testify. who may not want to relive this appearance. >> reporter: an attorney representing the victims tells cnn the survivors continue to have confidence in the prosecutor's office and sincerely hope for a swift and just results. donations continue to pour into the courage fend set up to help the women now at $1 million. since returning home a month ago, the women continue to heal privately. one family said said they're

hitting that country's main stock market. stocks in istanbul have wiped out all of their gains for the year. borrowing costs there have been surging topping 7% there today. comparing short-term bonds here in the u.s. is around 2:00. all the volumivity in the markets essentially in turkey is not unusual. in the u.s., stocks coming off a selloff, futures coming to a modestly higher open. walgreens amid allegations that it let painkillers like oxycodone get to the black market. it's the biggest drug settlement in history. the dea said a walgreens in florida got an unusually large amount of painkillers for some of its pharmacy. the dea said walgreens knew these drugs weren't for legitimate use.

time stars in this game. we're going to show you the whole, ugly messy thing. welcome back to "early start" everyone. i'm a very excited john berman. >> i'm christine romans. it's only 5:30 in the east and berman's excited. >> crews battling five, count them, five wildfires in colorado. state emergency officials say the royal gorge fire has forced the evacuation of 800 inmates from a prison in canyon city. the worst of the fire is near colorado springs. that has burned at least 7500 acres, just throwing dozens of structures, forcing thousands to evacuate their homes. at this point, firefighters have zero containment. zero. and the weather this morning not their friend at all. conditioner dry, hot and wind. indra peterson is tracking that for us. not a lot of that in sight.

>> it clearly shows how dry it is. a lot of red flag warnings out there. it looks like for the next several days, the forecast is not changing. the only thing we're seeing, a chance of thunderstorms, for the next two days, but dry, enhancing the effect for more wildfires. we saw the contrast of humidity on the east to the west. but the other contrast this morning, look at all of these warm temperatures and notice it's cooler to the north. all of this is actually setting up a big picture for severe weather again. the other ingredient we have, a low, actually in california, to cruise over the jet stream. and now notice, with all of this and all of these ingredients, we have a threat for severe weather. in fact, it's a heightened threat. awe moderate risk area. columbus, ohio, we're looking at the threat for not only tornadoes but especially very strong winds out there. what i want to point out, tomorrow, this shifts to the east. once again in the mid-atlantic states, we're talking about that threat for severe weather.

just what we saw a few days ago. the baltimore area has recovered from at least three confirmed tornadoes now all three classified as the weakest category with maximum wind speeds, 65 to 80 miles per hour. they packed a mean punch on monday. one of them demolished a homeowner's garage. scattered debris over half of this four-acre property. >> tornado came through the back here. right over the garage. went down through here and disappeared. it's just so intense and so quick. you couldn't really see anything. it was just like a dark white cloud full of rain and debris. >> the twister count could go up. the national earth weather service is checking possible tornado damage in five other spots in maryland. new york mayor michael bloomberg helping to develop plans for superstorms like sandy. bloomberg's plan calls for giant removable flood walls to be built around lower manhattan,

15-foot walls in areas of staten island. and new dunes will be constructed on beaches in staten island and queens. the price tag for this, not cheap at all. some $20 billion. all right. nobody seems to know the whereabouts of edward snowden this morning. the man who told the world about the nsa secret mining operations is staying in the shadows. so is his girlfriend lindsay mills. we don't know much about the woman he left behind, but she wants the world to know she's struggling. more from miguel marquez. >> reporter: the man at the center of the controversy left everything behind for his beliefs. >> you have to make a determination about what it is that's important to you. and if living unfreely but comfortably is something you're willing to accept -- >> reporter: snowden said he cut his ties cleanly with everyone he knew or was close to including his girlfriend lindsay mills who lived with him here in hawaii. mills father's said that his daughter dated snowden for five

years, but met him only a few times. >> he's head strong, convictions are right and wrong, it kind of makes sense, but still shocked. >> reporter: snowden prepared for that shock, telling "the guardian" my primary fear is that they will come after my family, my friends, my partner, anyone i have a relationship with. snowden told "the guardian," law enforce hunt had already been in touch with mills. in her blog adventures of a world traveling pole dancing superhero just days ago, june 10th, mills wrote, my world opened and closed all at once. leaving me lost at sea without a compass. she and snowden moved out of this rented home outside of honolulu on may 6th. he told "the guardian" he left the home may 20th telling mills, he'd be back in a few weeks. what's curious, she also packed everything up and left for the main land. as the story unfolds people in the neighborhood are cautious

about going on camera. one thing that several neighbors have told us that they found peculiar about the situation is that when they looked at this garage, they saw boxes all the way to the top of the windows here. the question is, where have those boxes gone. and the contents of the house. mills' father told cnn his daughter is now on the west coast visiting friends. just when she left hawaii still a question. so is whether she had any clue about her boyfriend's plans. on her blog, she said snowden's family was in town may 17th just three days before he left his life behind. her next post on june 3rd, she wrote, the past two weeks have been a cluster rumble of fun, disaster and adventure. six days later, her boyfriend revealed he was the source of the leaked security documents, triggering as many questions as answers. miguel marquez, cnn, honolulu. a showdown on the senate,

armed services committee chairman carl ledgen plans to remove a major championed by gillibrand. it calls for military prosecutors, not commanders to decide which assault cases to try. levin said he'll oppose said that senior officers who designed to pursue sexual assault cases. and opening statements get under way in the trial of confirmed mob boss james "whitey" bulger. he is charged with 19 murders, along with loan sharking, money laundering, shaking down book makers and drug dealers for protection money. prosecutors say from the late '70s through the mid-'90s, whitey bulger rose to the top. it took 26 years to find her father's killer. now justine martinez said she finally has justice. he tirelessly tracked social media for a decade.

she spent less than $300 to hunt down the man who killed her father. because of her, that man is in custody this morning. here is poppy harlow. >> reporter: it's like a dream for jocelyn martinez. what is your greatest memory of your father? >> those parties we had at the restaurant. >> reporter: after 26 years, her father's alleged killer arrested. his capture thanks in large part to her. >> my family told me you'll never get that man. >> reporter: jocelyn was just 9 when her father was murdered in 1996. jose martinez was shot and killed outside of the restaurant he and his wife owned. but the suspect fled to the dominican republic. the nypd said the murder case was closed in 1988. after receiving information that santos was jailed in the dominican republic. what the nypd didn't know that

just a year later, santos was released >> they should not have closed the case. >> reporter: in 2006, jocelyn started hunting online for her father's alleged killer delving into websites like background.com. >> reporter: what did you find? >> i didn't know i had so much stuff. i really didn't. >> reporter: but after years of searching -- >> let me look. oh, my god, i have this person at the background check right at the top. >> reporter: she took what she found here to the 34th precinct in november. >> because november's the anniversary of my father's death and i get upset. >> reporter: police say it's only because of her efforts they were able to capture santos. >> obviously, she made a concerted effort, and it paid off. >> reporter: a police source tells cnn after santos was arrested in miami thursday, he confessed to murdering jose martinez. >> what do you think your dad would say? >> i -- you know, i think he would just hug me and smile. he would smile a lot. >> reporter: nypd detectives are

set of steps into taksim square, a substantial barricade that even includes the burnt out carcass of a vehicle that they managed to drag up there but a very, very different situation than what we were seeing even just some 12, 8 hours ago. one also has to remember when we look back at the demonstrations, there have been lulls taking place, moments of calm and seems it erupts at any given moment. >> we know there's this meeting scheduled today between the prime minister and what his people are calling protest leaders. what's going on with this? >> well, look, a lot of the protesters, a lot of the leaders of these various different groups that have been involved in the gezi park protests since the beginning are not attending that meeting. one member of the main umbrella coalition responsible for the

demonstrations has said they were not even officially invited and he and others have been telling us to sit down and try to negotiate with the government at this point in time would be effectively fruitless because of what happened yesterday, because of the government's ongoing use of excessive force against these demonstrators who are by and large peaceful but also because of the prime ministers as they describe it condescending rhetoric toward the demonstrat r demonstrators, calling them marginal, going so far as to call them extremists. they say those people attending the meeting are mostly allied with the government to begin with so it's the government effectively speaking to itself to try to bring about resolution to what has become an incredibly complex issue that is about so much more than just the protection of gezi park. >> arwa damon in istanbul overlooking taksim square, calm
