74 million people in the path of powerful tornadoes, high winds, hail. tornadoes in pawpaw, illinois. chicago saw 50-mile-an-hour gusts yesterday coupled with dime-sized hail. >> in iowa, two tornadoes confirmed. the sheriff's office reporting extensive damage. two businesses took the brunt of the rath. the restaurant owner said she left just in time. >> kind of looked at it and the keown di- kept getting closer. we locked the door, jumped in and took off for town. i think it hit two minutes after that. >> to me, it looked large and scary. we weren't sure what it was hitting or if there were injuries at that time. >> no juries reported, but there

were power outages. >> look at this image of lightning hitting chicago's willis tower, formerly known as the sears tower. >> knocked the new name off. >> the threat of the tornado is moving from the midwest to the northeast, even in d.c. >> there's so much to talk about. we are not just worried about only tornadoes, but these strong winds and we have large hail, severe thunderstorms and heavy rain and flooding. all of this still in the picture for the next 48 hours. here is what occurred. 18 tornado reports. 137 wind reports and hail with the severe weather. the set up is there for what we call a derecho. you keep hearing this word. what is it? a fast moving long-lived wind storm. violent thunderstorms and we continue to see these, wind gusts, greater than 48 miles per

hour over 240 miles. that is exactly what we have been tracking. currently, what we saw yesterday didn't reach the ground. we are not calling it a derecho, yet. here is the set up we are talking about. all the warm, moist air is there. we have the contrasting with the colder, drier air. you need a lift. today, we have the strong jet stream above and all that is going to continue to bring rotation. here you go. you can see what we have seen the last 24 hours or so. you can see the backwards "c." with that, we are looking at the threat of severe weather. we have the fire weather. dan simon is out in colorado where we continue to have that weather. tell us the latest, dan? >> reporter: the good news is the winds have died down. temperatures have fallen. this fire has become such a problem that federal authorities are taking over the operations. a federal incident commander is on ground, getting updates, preparing for the transition.

multiple wildfires burning out of control across colorado, forcing thousands more to three their homes. hundreds of firefighters trying to gain control of the wind whipped flames as the evacuation areas grow. >> we have had incredible wind shifting. the winds remained consistent. it's done a lot of things we are not expecting. >> reporter: wednesday, the fires roared through thousands of acres fueled by high temperatures, dry brush and gusty winds. >> we watched the plumes of smoke as the fire was rolling over our neighborhood. >> reporter: there's no sign of slowing down. this boy scout heeding the warnings. >> we want to make sure they are going to be safe. >> horses taken to safety. the baby deer carried out of the fire as the inferno puts everything and everybody in danger. >> the sheriff's came down and said you are going now.

kong? >> reporter: definitely. from that article in the morning post, they met with him yesterday. he has said he will stay in hong kong until he's asked to leave. he wants to fight the extradition order and wants to do it from hong kong. there's a reason why he spoke to the post, one of the most popular english dailies here. he's reaching out to the hong kong people, addressing them directly. he wants them to decide his fate, not the u.s. government. i want to read a quote that says people who think i made a mistake picking hong kong as a location misunderstand my intentions. i'm not here to hide from justice, i'm here to reveal. hacking computer systems here in hong kong and mainland china. this is something that is obviously going to embarrass the united states and anger american

politicians calling for his extradition. >> snowden says he believes the u.s. is trying to extradite him whachlt is happening between the u.s. and hong kong? any sense on whoo officials are going to do? >> i think the words he used were bullying. the u.s. government isn't really speaking. certainly the u.s. consulate here in hong kong is not speaking. they are not giving comment, either. we are really in the dark as to the communications in hong kong and the united states. there is an extradition agreement. it works well between hong kong and the u.s. china can step in if they feel a national interest to do so. it's something that could play into the saga that is unfolding. the other thing is edward snowden could apply for asylum. it could carry out months, if

not years. the reporter who told the world about edward snowden and the wiretapping program is speaking out again. glenn greenwald was on ""ac 360." they said he should be prosecutored because he has names of cia agents and assets around the world and is threatening to disclose that. greenwald responding saying it's not true. >> the last thing i would try to do is read the mind and what goes on internally in the swamp of peter king's brain. he has a history of radical and extreme statements. he was a supporter of terrorism for several decades when it was done by the i.r.a. i don't know if he decided to make that up or hallucinated or what, but what i do know is the claims he made on national television about me were utterly and completely false.

carolyn pretended to be her own 11-year-old daughter to turn face a child predator. >> are you still a virgin? nor what she was seeing, nude pictures. >> i was overwhelmed. unbelievable. i couldn't believe it. i thought it happened to other people, not here in my home. >> reporter: it started last month. late last month, carolyn decided to check her 11-year-old daughter's phone. she found a bunch of facebook messages, no big deal if they were from other kids, but they weren't. >> we see this guy, a grown man. that's what set off the alarm in me. >> reporter: the man charged with sending the lewd texts and pictures is this man, a 23-year-old, michael jerome bradley. he might be out there if not for carolyn's per suit.

territory. it's down 20% from the recent peak. investors are concerned. stocks in hong kong and shanghai dropped as well. it was the worst losing streak of the year. tapering back a stimulus plan to pull back when growth is modest, at that. yesterday, the dow rose 100 points, then ended down 100 points. the vix is jumping as well. it has a long way to go to see what we saw during the recession. the market has wiggle room. the s&p 500 is still up 13% this year. right now, dow futures off 70 points. >> pictures should have paid some of its interns. two interns on the movie, "the

flooding out there. let's go backward. today, what are we expect sng a moderate risk from maryland to west virginia. we are talking a good 70 million people affected. that's the threat. not just the tornadoes and heavy thunderstorms, with that come strong amounts of rain. three to five inches expected. two to five inches in the mid-atlantic. they were inundated with rain last week. >> it sounds like a terrifying weather infomercial, but wait there's more. thanks. nearly two months after a deadly fertilizer explosion that nearly wiped west texas off the map, the state is waiting for fee moe to deliver money. here is the rub. the federal government and the state are in a political tug-of-war over disaster.

cameras leave. >> reporter: our cameras are still here and this little town needs help. in a letter to governor perry, fema says the remaining cost for permanent work is within the capabilities of the state and local governments. officials accuse president obama of turning his back on the people of west. despite texas' healthy environment, they haven't covered enough for rebuilding. the city has a $2 million yearly budget and needs $17 million to repair the damaged infrastructure. officials say the school system is lacking $25 million to rebuild two destroyed schools. the mayor says without the disaster aid, he might be only able to afford gravel roads in the destroyed neighborhoods. when you tell folks they might be driving on gravel roads -- >> i haven't told them yet.

after 30 years. e-mails showing he was responsible for editing the benghazi terrorist attacks. he decided to retire to spend more time with his family. president obama back in washington after hearty fund raising in florida. he spoke in miami beach raising money for the democratic national committee. two miami police officers were injured when their vehicle was involved in a crash on interstate 95. both officers taken to the hospital. hillary clinton back in the political spotlight today. she's scheduled to speak at the clinton global initiative in chicago. it's likely to fuel more speculation about a presidential run in 2016. earlier, clinton debuted her twitter account saying her political future was tbd, to be determined. the fate of the istanbul park is the center of antigovernment protests.

the prime minister ordered his interior minister to put a stop to the protests within 24 hours, which could set the stage for more violence. the protests are now in their 14th day. two have been killed and 4,300 demonstrators injured in the last week. voters will pick a successor for ahmadinejad. all iranian citizens over 18 are able to vote. only male shiites are allowed to run for president. six candidates are on ballot. debra fine was shot four times in her car last friday. she credits a man for saving her life. piers morgan brought the two

two maintenance workers stranded when the scaffolding snapped 45 stories above a manhattan street. there's a unique zigzag shape, not easy to do. getting the men to safety was tricky. >> familiar sight turned into a high-rise rescue. >> this started to unfold on the 44th floor. >> this dramatic scene played out more than 550 feet above the new york city streets. for 90 minutes, two maintenance workers dangled outside the most city's recognizable skyscraper. stranded when the staff folding buckled and broke in the middle. instead of hoisting the men up, firefighters determined it was safer to cut a hole in the window on the 44th floor. this is what it looked like from the ideas.

watch as they carefully crawl through. >> they are used to being on the pfa scaffolding so they didn't have complaints. >> reporter: it is a dangerous job. last october, this washington, d.c. construction worker dangled from a safety rope when one side of his pfascaffolding failed. firefighters use rescued him. in yonkers new york, two men clung to the side of a building into the night. their scaffold hanging off the size of a high-rise building. one climbed through a window, the other lowered to the ground. wednesday's ordeal ended safely and paramedics that attended to the men after the rescue said they both smiled through it all. >> can you imagine smiling? neither were injured in wednesday's accident. authorities say people below

moved, it's gone 500 miles. yes, that is over 240 miles but not all of the wind reports were close enough at the ground or surface to be called a derecho. the risk is still out there as we have the low in the midwest yesterday, now farther to the east the jet stream dipped down and we're seeing more enhancement today so the threat for severe weather still here today, it shifted farther to the east so here is the outline of where we're looking for the severe weather, more of a moderate risk and 70 million people are in the threat for severe weather. it's not just the tornadoes and strong winds, keep in mind many places in the mid-atlantic and northeast are five, six inches above normal for rainfall. what is expected to be added on to that, strong winds, the ground is saturated, very easy to blow over trees and power poles. dan simon, what does it look like? a lot of conditions out there.

today sarah murnaghan begins a brand new chapter in her life. she received a new set of lungs in a transplant operation, lungs that came from an adult donor. doctors call sarah's prognosis good. jason carroll is in philadelphia, jason has been on the story from the beginning. what is the latest? >> reporter: well, sarah is resting comfortably. her parents and her family by her side. she's heavily sedated, john, and they want to be there for her when she wakes up. the surgery lasted about six hours, the family saying doctors told them they had no special challenges to resizing the lungs to fit sarah. she's been in the intensive care unit, a six-hour operation. you can imagine how the parents felt tuesday night when they got word donor lungs were available. the family says they have to take it one step at a time and one day at a time.

>> we expect her to be doing some things within the next couple days and taking her first breaths so we can't wait for that and she really did well, so we're very, very, very excited and we're very, very thankful. we're quite certain we were down to the last week so that wonderful family gave us the best gift ever, and we are really happy for that. we can't imagine their pain but we're thankful for what they did for us. >> once again, sarah is doing well considering what she has been through but she still has a very long road ahead of her, john, as you can imagine there's always the risk of infection, always the risk her body will reject these new organs. as you heard there the family is just taking things one day at a time and they're overjoyed that they've come this far. john? >> always delicate and complicated. jason, this week the age restrictions for transplants was lifted only for one year so what's the reaction from the

medical community? this morning now that the surgery looks to have gone well, do you think we can see these age restrictions lifted permanently? >> reporter: i think it's a possibility in all honesty. on monday as you know there was this huge meeting that took place with united net work for organ sharing, this is the organization that helps maintain and oversees the wait list for organ donations and during this call-in meeting i was listening in, there was a lot of discussion about this issue, emphasis weighing in, concern about putting together a policy that would be fair to children and adults and over this one-year period of time they'll study the issue and that's what secretary kathleen sebelius really wanted, thoughtful insight and discussion and study into the issue and so over this next year that's what we'll get. at the end of the year we'll see what happens in terms of a permanent possible change to the policy. >> jason carroll outside the
