gandolfini dead at the age of 51. the tributes flowing in this morning. many of us know him as tony soprano. >> there's a lot of reaction this morning. most is shock from fans, friends and colleagues in the industry. then respect for whom in call one of the best, if not the best and most underrated actor of our time we gin to roll in. the sudden death of james gandolfini rippled in. >> i can't believe it. i'm in shock. >> taken back. such a young man. such a nice guy. >> his death confirmed by hbo, the network where he shot to fame as the top mob boss on "the sopranos." >> i couldn't ask for more. >> the representative said the

51-year-old actor may have had a heart attack. the official cause is not yet known. the news blind sided his closest hollywood friends. i have lost a brother and a best friend. the world lost one of the greatest actors of all time. the show's creator mourned the loss in a statement saying he was a genius. anyone who saw him, even in the smallest of his performances knows that. he is one of the greatest actors of this or any time. a great deal of that genius resided in those sad eyes. he was vacationing in italy where he was scheduled to attend a film festival in sicily later this week. he made one

there will be an autopsy performed tomorrow morning. there's a bit of a background. gandolfini was brought to the emergency room dead on arrival at 6:55 eastern time last night. he explains under italian law, anyone who arrives dead cannot have an autopsy earlier than 24 hours after their body is brought in. also, because he is an american citizen, his body will remain in italy until a death certificate is requested by the family. >> 51. so young. >> yeah. >> there are not many people you can say literally changed television. he changed entertainment. >> put hbo on the map. nobody knew what "the sopranos" were. he got the roll at 35 years old. his success came later in life. he changed the face of television with this role and

returning early this morning from overseas and still facing questions about government surveillance program that is spooked americans. he's promised more answers. >> what we are going to be doing when i get back home is trying to find ways to declassify further some of these programs without completely compromising their effectiveness. sharing that information with the public -- >> reporter: after revelations about government access to phone records and e-mails, the fbi director facing questions about limits on the agency's use of drones on american soil. >> we have very few and limited use. >> reporter: the coast guard uses drones for surveillance on ice sheets in alaska and department of homeland security uses them to watch the borders. the fbi used unarmed drones over a dozen times. to monitor the scene from the rescue of a 5-year-old alabama boy taken hostage.

upset. they sparked a furious round of diplomacy with secretary of state kerry calling karzai, trying to broker a deal. no word on when the peace talks might begen. new this morning, the taliban offering trade to the u.s. a group telling the associated press they are ready to hand over an army sergeant in exchange for five people held in guantanamo bay. he's been missing since 2009. this month, his parents received a letter from him. the actress accused of sending letters to president obama and michael bloomberg. she tried to frame her husband for the crime she convicted. she could get up to ten years in prison. aaron hernandez is back home as police continue their investigation into a suspicious death nearby. the body of a man was found in

an industrial park a mile away. the man was a semiprofootball player who says he was connected to hernandez. police were seen searching along a road near his home. si.com says he is not a suspect. he's facing a suit in florida for shooting a man in the face after they fought at a strip club. lawyers telling espn they plan to refile that. >> they are calling off the search for jimmy hoffa. it's the latest chapter in the unsuccessful search for hoffa who disappeared in 1975. the tip came from a mob boss who said he was buried in oakland township, michigan after he went missing. high winds, a dangerous combination fueling a wildfire. look at the pictures. officials say the fire has now

gave a speech. the president insisting the nsa surveillance programs were effective in foiling terror plots there and in the u.s. he's promising to share more success stories with the public. arizona's first major wildfire of the season is winning the battle against hundreds of firefighters trying to contain it. the fire is spreading. it's grown to 7,000 acres. the fast moving flames forcing evacuation of nearly 500 homes. it is 0% contained right now. in california, fire crews are making progress of a wildfire close to a main route in yosemite. some 1,000 evacuees have been allowed to return to their homes. >> this looks a lot more ominous than it turned out to be.
