asked for asylum. the obama administration not happy hong kong let him leave and wants russia to return him. it's an international game of mad libs here. we expect to government to look at all options available to expel him back to the u.s. to face the crimes with which he's charged. we have a report from phil in moscow. >> reporter: at the airport, there were early signs the government of ecuador was playing a role in the escape of snowden. this was the ambassador's car parked outside. this official got lost inside the terminal. >> no comments. >> are you hear in relation to mr. snowden at all? the world learned of his sudden departure from hong kong when he was already in the air. a big group of russian and

international journalists waited to meet him. snowden stayed inside the terminal. soon after, the government of ecuador confirmed he asked for asylum. ecuador is protecting one other man, wikileaks founder, julian assange. he's been living in the london embassy for a week. wikileaks said snowden asked the organization to help find a country to help protect him. he's bound for a safe route for the purpose of asylum. amid furious and changing speculation about where snowden planned to go after russia, the u.s. government asked ecuador, venezuela and cuba to refuse him entrance and his passport has been canceled. it's not known if russia will let him leave or extract further

under fire after the claim the u.s. hadn't provided enough information to arrest snowden. the obama justice department saying the extradition request met all the requirements. they argued the first request came june 15th and they raised questions only friday. another lawmaker points to beijing. >> china had a role in this. >> reporter: still, did the u.s. wait too long to charge snowden and u.s. officials tell cnn they revoked his passport saturday with word he would seek asylum in ecuador or elsewhere. the u.s. is advising the governments that he's wanted on felony charges and should not be allowed to proceed in international travel. the head of the nsa slammed snowden. >> this is an individual who is not acting with noble intent.

the president coming out in the last hour saying he is in good hands, that doctors are doing everything they can for him. that he's comfortable. his family spoke to me over the weekend. this is what they had to say. ♪ on a cold winter's night, they came to sing for nelson mandela. behind one of these hospital windows, the 94-year-old mandela battles a lung infection. his wife sleeps her every night. the rest of his family visits during the day. >> i want him to be comfortable. >> reporter: comfortable. is that all you can do for him now? >> when you say is that all that can be done now, no. they haven't stopped treating him with all the best medication there is in the world. >> do you think he's at peace?

because the foreign minister already has confirmed the request. he's analyzing and studying that request before deciding whether or not. the foreign minister of ecuador had this to say, take a listen. >> i can only confirm we did receive a request for asylum from mr. snowden. we know he is in moscow and we are in touch with the highest authorities in russia. >> caller: christine, there is precedence for the asylum. ecuador granted asylum to wikileaks founder julian assange. he is now in the ecuador yan embassy and wanted in sweden for investigation. however, assange does not face charges in the u.s., which snowden does.

sxz the parents of a journalist heading overseas. austin contacted his parents and was said to be on his way to lebanon when he was detained. his parents are headed to beirut. they want to fipd pooem to help facilitate in his release. they do not know where he is. the family of an oklahoma teen missing in ecuador is no closer to finding out what happened to their son. the 18-year-old was hiking with the family when he vanished. vanished. another search on the mountain turned up no clues.
