arrive? >> because the one job kate had to do immediately after the wedding was get pregnant. >> author katie nichol has been writing about the royal family for the last decade. >> she had to secure the line of succession. we were always going to be on bump watch. >> but in true william and kate style, they did it their own way, waiting and choosing to enjoy time as newlyweds before starting a family. >> it's a breach of royal tradition. you look at diana and you look at the queen. they were both pregnant within i think three and six months of being married. even their honeymoon was different. what royal newlyweds usually do is to go off to balmoral which is the queen's scottish residence. but they decided they would not go with scotland. they would go to the seychelles instead. >> it really shows how thoughtful they are and they do things their way. you can see their voice and

they came from pretty modest upbringing, a modest start in life. and it was really because of carol's desire to improve their position and to build that family business. >> they sold supplies for children's parties and soon spun it into an online internet empire worth millions. >> it was carol who saw that this business really had legs to grow. and of course, when that happened and there was money in the bank, they decided to invest in their children's education. >> as the middletons saw success, they sent their kids to private schools. kate was 13 when she came here to down house, arriving confident, happy. but that would soon change. >> she went in at the age of 13 rather than 11. most of the girls had started at 11. so they were already -- >> they already had their circles. >> they kid. and it was very difficult for her to find her feet. >> she became the victim of the mean girls in the school. there was malicious gossip about

her background. because she was one of the very few girls from a working class background attending that school. >> carol middleton wasted no time. she immediately switched kate to a boarding school. >> marlborough was a big school. >> ali baines went to school with kate. >> boarding schools, if they're not happy, are miserable. there's very few in between. >> for kate, it was a tough start. >> you have to forget the glossy finessed image of the duchess of cambridge that you see on the television, and remember particularly as a young woman, she was quite shy. she was quite introverted compared to pippa who was outgoing and sociable. kate was much quieter. she was a different character, and it took some drawing out of her shell. >> carol middleton once again stepped in. >> her mother set out to

transform her. she combed out her lush hair, she got her wearing makeup for the first time. so when she reappeared in school, it was a new person. >> it was here where kate really came out of her shell. popular, athletic and a serious student. but she also had a bit of a wild side. according to one friend, she was known to moon the boys from her dorm window, earning her the nickname, kate middlebum. >> reasonably happy at school. it was great fun, and she was a very pretty girl. >> yet kate didn't date much, and despite her denials, many who knew her then insist she set her sights much higher than her prep school classmates. >> i talked to too many friends who said yes, she always had this picture over her bed, a picture of william in fishing gear. so she did have her sights set on him like a lot of young women her age. >> winter 2000, kate would come close to meeting her prince.

after her graduation, both kate and william traveled to chile with the same youth volunteer group. but they just missed each other. malcolm sutherland was their expedition leader. >> i think it's incredible for a start the fact that william and kate didn't even know each other. this is kate sitting in front. >> for both, it was hard work. they helped build buildings, teach english, even clean toilets in the same small town in chile. >> kate's tough. she's a sporty fit lady. she knew what she was about. she knew how to look after herself. >> while kate missed william that winter, chris andersen says carol middleton made sure that wouldn't happen again. >> originally kate wanted to go to edinburgh university. when it was announced by the palace that william would be attending st. andrews university, enrollment among women in st. andrews jumped

>> jules knight was watching the show that night with william. >> she wasn't what you call a risque girl. she was a pretty safe bet. and here she was not wearing that much, looking amazing. i think everyone did think, wow. >> but that was the moment when he suddenly realized that his friend was actually very hot and he rather quite liked her. >> and the next fall when william and kate moved into this flat together with a couple of friends, their friendship turned romantic. >> it just sort of blossomed from there, really. we just saw more of each other and hung out a bit more and did stuff. >> you liked my cooking. >> your cooking was all right. it's got better. >> living with a girlfriend was almost unheard of for a member of the royal family. >> it was controversial, but i think it was felt that they didn't want mistakes of the past.

>> there was a photographer that reported a couple of hours ago that he saw, well, his staff saw, there is an agency, a convoy around the back. but that was about two hours ago. so he was clearly right. >> right. and exactly the staff inside the hospital, how they will be taking care of her. essentially, what will happen for her inside that hospital. over the next couple of hours. >> so i'm not hearing you clearly, but the process from here is that literally she has a

large team of personal physicians an doctors. they will all be in there with her at the moment. assuming the baby is boscrn, yo will see the officials at hospital. it will be their job to do the rounds. the prime minister in australia and the queen will be called by prince william and then the process of formal announcement which is when the notice is taken to hospital and to bumming ham palace. that will be the first indication that baby's been born and the notice will be the first indication of whether it is a boy or girl. so over the next couple of days, that's a mixed tradition, they haven't always done it that way, but i think they are delivering some sort of to the world, the world is so interested. >> and there is a lot of interest in whether it is a girl or boy. and we know that william and

kate didn't find out the sex of the baby. was it ever revealed why they didn't find out ahead of time? >> i'm sorry -- >> sure. was it ever revealed why william and kate never wanted to find out the sex of the child ahead of time? >> oh, i don't know. kate is a very traditional girl. but they knew very well that question that they would be asked constantly after the announcement of the pregnancy, is are you having a boy or a girl. and the simplest way of dealing with that question not knowing yourself. that's my theory. i don't know. but certainly, the palace said they didn't know. so i do believe they didn't know. and i think reason is perhaps partly person. wanted to save the surprise. but also professionally, it was sort of a layer of armor against the questions being fired at them. >> okay. if you are just joining us here on cnn, and i imagine a lot of people are just tuning in right now. it is coming up to 15 minutes before 8:00 in the morning in

london. and within the last couple of moments, we have received an e-mail from buckingham balance yas that the duchess of cambridge, catherine, has gone into labor, in early stages of labor and she is now at st. mary's hospital. and max, you were telling us that you believe the vehicle, car arrived, with kate and william, what within the last couple of hours? >> yes. a couple of hours ago. and there was a team out front, and not in the back, just the front. and that is what allowed us to get ready for this. and we were standing by. >> and we know that they travelled from kensington palace because kate had been with her parents at buckleberry for quite sometime. they relocated. >> yes, they have been spending

time in the countryside. and there are a lot of experts, that was the most sensible thing to do. because the priority for a pregnant lady is to not feel any stress at all. so in buckleberry, they have a large house, which is completely private and they could sit there without being seen and relax and away from media pressure. there were some photographers but they wouldn't have been aware of them. and they obviously came up to london at the end of last week and oefrp the weekend. just to be placed at hospital and that plan seems to have worked pretty effectively. >> and they went from kensington p palace to the window wing which was nicknamed the limbo wing because everyone was caught in

this limbo of waiting and waiting and waiting. but as you're tuning in, just before 8:00 in the morning in london, that kate has actually now entered early stages of pregnancy. she arrived at st. mary's hospital. maybe within the last hour, last couple of hours or so. and as this baby draws its first breath, there will be a well-planned series of events to kick off the official birth announcement. here is a look at the plan from first calls to where we can expect to see the new arrival.

>> > it has all been well planned out. max foster is still with us on the phone from outside st. mary's hospital. what we know so far about kate's pregnancy, until this point, we believe it's been relatively problem-free, hasn't it?

at least medically. >> yeah. it has been problem-free, i think. because you have that very early scare where the duchess went into hospital before she announced she had a very severe morning sickness. and then we were told she rest if a while before she gets better. and she is looking at public engagements and there is is a whole list of public engagements. so we can be pretty confident in saying she had a good pregnancy and she is taking shape in the expected way. and overdue for the first bibby. a lot of people would argue, the past few days, is preferable to being early. and the fact that we haven't heard any worrying stories from the palace or the palace should be quite open as well in terms of updates, i think we can say

that she certainly has a good pregnancy. and hopefully the rest will be good too. >> and during the whole morning sickness stay in hospital we had that tragic event when the australian djs called up the hospital and they got put through and unfortunately, the nurse who took that call took her own life. but max, in the past, there has been a deal with the paparazzi when it comes to the royals, william and harry. for this child, be it prince or princess, is there a stim lar agreement in place or is that yet to be worked out? >> and since diana died, there has been a lot of discussion, between particularly newspaper editors in the palace, and the general agreement these days, is that the palace will pro viet opportunity to members of the media that want to sort of break the rules as it were. so they are very sensitive about

paparazzi pictures still. if paparazzi pictures do get shown the palace comes down pretty severely. in the uk, they are generally not seen outside the uk. pictures of the duchess out shopping for example, they get shown in the uk, so the deal is it is still pretty much in place. but there is a huge hunger on this story and what you have found is that some of the photographers have started -- if you like, the society wedding, where they expect the royals to turn up and take those pictures because there is a huge demand and the huge amount of money the photographers make if they get a picture, it is quite phenomenal. >> at what moment will there be an official photograph of the child? >> there will be a photo opportunity in the next few weeks. there will be a photographer invited in to take pictures of the family. and that will be in the -- we will get those pictures. and there is some discussion

about cameras being here once the bibby is born. i think this is a couple that is fiercely protected by their privacy and once that happens there is protection and increases even more. it is very likely they become more protective, particularly after child. we will see how that handle things. but there are a group of us they are very skpebl with and they will work with us i think on the basis to get pictures out. there will be a huge amount of coverage. and it has been seen over the last week. there is still coverage, even though they aren't giving information out. they want to try to help fill that vacuum to avoid any uncomfortable circulation. >> right, and again, for viewers who may be tuning in to cnn right now, the news from buckingham palace is that duchess of cambridge, catherine, has now gone into labor. it is early stages of labor.

it is coming up into almost 8:00 in the morning in london, we understand from max foster our royal correspondent joining us on the line from outside of st. mary's hospital, that kate may have arrived there within the last couple of hours. maybe around 6:00 a.m. london time this morning. they made a very short journey from kensington palace. we know kate had actually been spending time away from the stress of london, away from the heat. she had been with her family, her mother and father at buckleberry, but recently relocated to kensington palace then made the journey from kensington palace. just a short drive i believe, from the palace to st. mary's hospital. where this pregnancy, this labor, is now under way. and like prince william, his baby is a mega star before he or she is even born. max foster has this report now. he spoke to william's cousin and

confidant, peter phillips, who took a title and the doubties that come with it. >> my parent made it very clear that when we were growing up that we grew up and were very privileged in terms of where we grew up and how we grew up in terms of surroundings. we had horses an fantastic locations and we were privileged from that perspective. then we had to go out and work for a living. it wasn't going to be presented on a place for us. we had to forth our own careers. so from that perspective, it hasn't been something i thought about. it has been something that we have to do. so to be successful on the equestrian side, and get up and ride ten horses and that is hard work. people don't understand the amount of work that goes into trying to put these things on. >> what are your thoughts as another heir comes along, this

bibby born, to the world. >> first and foremost, everyone is ecstatic for both. they will make great parent. and it is great to welcome another child into the family. and for selfish perspective, hopefully a playmate for my two girls to be able to grow up with. they will be under a great deal of scrutiny, but both parents are used to that and i think there is structure and infrastructure to be able to protect to a certain extent. but sure, they will be in the lime light just like william was from a very ear early age. >> if you are joining us, word coming to us from london that kate has finally gone into labor. happened in the last couple of hours. max foster is on the line with us from outside the hospital. max, we are expecting this to go fairly smoothly. tell us exactly how this played out when you first got the word. just recap for us, if you like. >> yeah.

respectively, we had a few photographic sources that they saw something going on around the hospital and we addheard shs in the early hours of labor. so the scene of the moment, the palace officials, trying to organize us, i wish them luck. there is a huge amount of media already. let alone the ones on their way. >> so, essentially, the queen will be the first one who find out about this. she is in london right now. she will -- so she won't be -- there's lots of talk she would be coming to the hospital. she wouldn't do that. i think the first call would either be to her or to prince charles from william. i would have thought that would have been -- she is head of state. william is very close to her. he knows this is her heir.

so i think it is likely he would probably call her first and prince charles would be told as well. then i think probably the beginning and end of william's calls. then the middletons will be called. and the formality of course will follow once the baby is born. because this is a head of state, future head of state, and the head of church, head of the armed forces an lots of people to notify the public. >> and max, you make a good point there, and all of the dignitaries and heads of state. the young couple having their first kid. so we wish them well. we will take a short break here on cnn. if you're just joining us, kate is in labor. a lot more coverage here on cnn after this short break.
