5:36 am
to june of 1982 when princess diana introduced the world to baby prince william for the first time. when this framed birth announcement was placed on a gilded easel outside buckingham palace, will and kate's tiny new addition officially became part of a family full of long standing tradition, like that easel. it's the same one that bore the announcement of prince william 31 years ago. and the hospital, dozens of news organizations have been staked outside the lindo wing at st. mary's hospital for weeks. the same place princess diana gave birth to prince william. >> what's really great is kate and will are upholding tradition with the birth of their baby boy. they both went to the same wing that princess diana and prince charles welcomed william, so what we're seeing is following tradition. >> every moment of their pregnancies was seen and scrutinized around the world, from how they looked to what they wore. >> they were actually starting trends.
5:37 am
whatever they wore, other people followed suit and usually whether diana or kate, those dresses sold out immediately. >> the new baby prince will be raised in the same home, kensington palace, where william and harry grew up and many royal experts believe kate will try to give her child the same sense of normalcy diana always strived for. >> we're going to see probably them take the baby on firl tours the same way diana took prince william and harry on official tours. they are really going to be a united front in terms of a family. >> and diana's brother released a statement just a short while ago saying this, quote, we're all so pleased. it's wonderful news. my father always told us how diana was born on such a blisteringly hot day in july 1961. it's another very happy summer's day half a century later. very sweet from diana's family.
5:38 am
joining me to talk more about this is cnn's royal historian, kate williams. looking back to see more pomp and pageantry. >> getting ready for the 41-gun salute about 2:00. that's traditional, ever since the birth of edward vii in the 19th century. let's cover our ears. >> definitely. i see the guns traveling past us right now. >> gun carriages actually, there are seven of them. they are really incredible and they will keep firing until 41 is done. >> it's actually a perfect segue. you're talking about the birth of an heir, there's so much tradition that comes with it, but as we're seeing that piece, i don't think diana and charles are really given enough credit for how they really broke the mold, did things their own way, really modernized raising a royal baby. set the stage for william and kate. >> you are so right, kate. diana and charles transformed
5:39 am
everything. diana was an incredible mother. she had william so young, her early 20s she had two children, but she was an incredible mother, so creative, so imaginative, so devoted. all the old traditions were swept away. she had her children in the hospital. she kept her children by her all the time. the queen, when charles was very young, she went away on tour and missed his first tea, his first word, that was fine. diana didn't want that. she took the children with her. we all remember the fantastic photo of her putting out her arms to william and henry. she was such a devoted mother. this is the question, duchess katherine is seen by the world, looked at by the world, wearing diana's engagement ring, but we know she said she wants to be a really great mother and most of all what she wants to do is give the child some kind of normal upbringing just as she had. i know you have those in the states, as well, went to brownies, the local school. cub scouts, here he comes.
5:40 am
>> also what do you think, traditionally, what is the role and how much influence does the mother's family play and how will the middleton's role be different? >> traditionally the mother's family plays no role whatsoever. they are pretty much pushed out the way, this is the heir to the throne, it's not about her family. it's going to be different this time, because first of all, carole middleton, she's the only real grandmother and she also is terribly close to kate. we do believe now after william and kate -- after william goes back from his paternity leave, he has two weeks off work is over, that kate will go to her parents' house in bucklebury and get used to the baby with her mother. she won't be with nannies, she'll be with her mother. the influence of carole middleton will be very strong and william wants it that way, he adores her. >> when talking about the influence of diana, one thing
5:41 am
that is very different, she was very protective of trying to keep them private, give them some kind of privacy. one aspect different is the role of social media. it's not just the traditional press that is wanting to get into their world, social media kind of breaks down barriers. >> so right, diana was inspired going to the cinema, amusement parks, but also keeping them private. what she used to do was make a deal with the photographers. okay, you can have a few photos, then leave us alone. photographers agreed to that. that can't happen now. whatever happens with the mainstream media, there are still people out with internet cameras and iphones and we know william and kate were snapped in mystique not by a mainstream photographer, but an individual on the beach with them and knew that kind of picture can these days garner you hundreds of thousands of pounds. >> a lot of give and take everyone's going to have to work with. stick with me, much more
5:42 am

5:43 am
when you come to the camp, what's interesting is you see the joy in the kids' faces. they are having an experience here that they would likely only have here. the parents that you spend most of the time talking to discuss what they've been going through and they've been going through a lot, because there's just nothing more vexing, i think, than to have a child who has a grave illness and you're powerless to do something about that. >> all right, what's the deal? let's go. >> these kids have an excess of the difficult things in life. it robs them of their childhood, and when they come to the camp, they have a childhood on so many different levels. hole in the wall is something where we have to keep it going and it has to expand. probably the greatest cause i've ever seen in my life. join the movement, impact your world, cnn.com/impact. >> one of the things that made paul newman such a great man, not just a great actor. alec is right, just because you're a child, doesn't mean you have a childhood with one of these illnesses.
