she was with her husband, javier bardem, at her side. and congratulations to the romneys, they are grandparents again. >> i turn you over to wolf blitzer in "the situation room." hey, wolf. the world gets its first glimpse of the new royal prince. just ahead, you'll see what they told reporters about being new parents, the baby's looks and what we can expect. as far as a name is concerned, at least when we can expect a name. i'm wolf blitzer. you're in "the situation room." this is cnn breaking news.
2:01 pm
>> all that coming up. let's begin with some breaking news. you're looking at live pictures of where we expect the embattled candidate for the new york city mayoral race candidate anthony weiner, he resigned two years ago amid a very public sexting scandal. now more sexually tinged exchanges with a woman online. he's confirming that those are real. let's bring in dana bash. as we await weiner's news conference or statement, whatever he's going to do, give our views a little background on what has developed today. >> you just laid it out very well, wolf. the basic gist is on the internet today we saw a web site post some exchanges and some
2:02 pm
pictures with anthony weiner and an unnamed woman. since then he has released a statement saying some are true, some are not true. we don't know what are and what aren't. all of them are pretty sexually explicit. the key question, though, is whether these took place. he of course left two years ago saying he was going to go to rehab, go into rehab saying he was going to change his life. he said the same thing when he announced his candidacy for mayor, which he is engaged in now. so this web site called the dirty says that these exchanges took place last year, well after he said he had become, in his words, a new man. let me read the written statement. it's lengthy but carefully worded. here's what he said, "i said that other texts and photos were likely to come out and today they have. as i have said in the past, these things that i were wrong and hurtful to my wife and have caused us to go through challenges in our marriage that extended past my resignation from congress. while some things that have been
2:03 pm
posted today are true and some are not, there is no question these things are wrong. this behavior is behind me. i have apologized to huma and am grateful that she has worked through these, use with me and for her forgiveness. we are focused on moving forward. this line where he talks about the fact that it's caused them to go through challenges in our marriage that extended past my resignation from congress, what does that mean? does that mean what he did is after he resigned from congress or they're still dealing with the ripple effects of what he did before he left congress. he's been doing relatively good in the poll, down lately but looks like he might be in striking distance but that's because new yorkers are willing to give him a second chance. third chance and fourth chance maybe not so much.
2:04 pm
>> will he just make a statement now or will he answer reporter's questions? >> we don't know. the campaign said it will be a press conference so hopefully he will answer questions. i and others have been trying to reach his campaign and ask that key question as to the timing. he doesn't say, yes that, happened after i resigned from congress or not and i got no answers back. we will hopefully hear reporters there ask those questions and maybe get an answer. >> we'll see what he has to say and monitor it and bring it to our viewers. he hasn't begun yet. we'll stay on top of the story. let move on to a truly iconic moment today, catherine and william emerging from the hospital to huge cheers and applause with their new bundle of joy, the prince of cambridge, heir to the british throne. they walked right up to reporters with the baby in their arms, william joking about the baby has his mother's looks and has way more hair than he does
2:05 pm
but they're still wking on a name. soon they snapped him in his car seat and drove everyone home to kensington palace. the anchor of cnn's "new day" kate bolduan is here. what is it like at kensington palace -- >> we're dealing with a bit of a bug attack. who knew. it's been quite a day to be in london. i flew in early this morning and it was a big waiting game really, waiting and waiting and waiting, longer lines, bigger crowds. >> waiting for that very big moment. >> you talk about waiting, kate, how many hours have you been in the city? >> i should not talk about
2:06 pm
waiting. >> i was living on the pavement for a week. >> everyone saw the huge moment when william and kate came out with the baby. you were on the ground. walk us through the moment. what was it like? >> it did live up to expectations and suddenly it happened after all that waiting. it was choreographed. she told us what was going to happen. that's where particularly kate was amazing. she does exactly what was planned. they came out, stood for the photographs. came down the steps, william made a few words, the camera -- >> it was so loud, you couldn't hear what he was saying. >> that's why the photographers were saying "show us his face, show us his face" because they couldn't see his face. what struck me was how calm she was and how happy he was. >> and it was precious to see them all together. >> they're a unit. yesterday they had this period of four hours between the birth and announcement, they wanted to
2:07 pm
have some -- those flies are -- >> it's something at this point. >> they wanted to get know their baby and i think that came across actually. >> i think so, too. the focus has now turned to here, kensington palace. the family has come and they'll get some much needed private time. they're waiting for their renovated apartment, not really what we would call an apartment, it's about 20 rooms. what is next? >> i think they're going to get out of here. they're going to want to see harry and pippa. this month they brought all of their staff to kensington palace. an aide told me william really wanted harry in kensington palace. they've come away from prince
2:08 pm
charles house and i think you're going to see a development here, the house of cambridge. it is very much william in the center of it, working in partnership with kate and harry. >> throughout the relationship, the marriage and now the birth, there's always these connections between kate and william and diana. and there continues to be that poignant connection. >> it is the hospital where william was born to diana. a lot of photographers picked up as she was holding the baby, you could see diana's ring so clearly there as well. >> quite a moment. >> it's difficult for william. each misses diana, wants to keep r memory alive but he also wants kate to spark until her own way and not to live in her shadow. >> the next big waiting moment is for the name. >> it is. and william admitted today they hadn't decided on a name. i can see that. even when you have decided on a

name, when you see the baby, perhaps it doesn't go. he used a news line, we're going to come straight back to you as soon as we have a name. >> so we have no time line but it is when it is. >> there is some suggestion there will be a tv moment when they sign the birth certificate. >> a lot going on here, wolf. a very big day. max has been following it all for us and i fortunately got to fly in for the last moment to have some fun. >> are you sticking around, kate? or are you heading back to new york? >> we'll be anchoring the show from here tomorrow morning. we have to wait for the name. i'll be depending on max to bring us some reporting on that. >> anchors, co-anchors, watching "new day" now at 6:00 a.m. >> let's bring in our royal

that sweet little baby boy. there he is. we don't have a name yet, but we probably will get one very soon. there's another nice shot of the baby. the royal couple and the new baby are bonding in their home right now at kensington palace in london. let's talk about their family life with our experts. joining us katie nichol and kate williams. they're at buckingham palace. also victoria arbiter. she's in new york. let's talk about the three of them in the mimd days ahead, victoria let me start with you. >> reporter: i think at the moment you hit the nail on the head. they're planning to bond with their baby and really enjoy this early stages of getting to know their little boy. it really remains to be seen what's going to happen in the immediate future. there's been a lot of talk of kate going down buckleberry when he goes to wales. they don't have the level of security required.
3:32 pm
i wouldn't be surprised if they pop up to barmorl. up there they get to have a relaxed totally free life together. even if it's just for a few days with great granny. william, i think if he goes back to wales without kate and the baby is going to miss them terribly. the fact he stayed in hospital last night shows how keen he is to being with them at all times. >> katie, at some point william has to go back to his job in the royal air force, as you will. but he's got some sort of leave right now, right? >> reporter: yeah. he's got paternity leave. over here in the uk, that's two weeks. which is quite generous. and he's taking his full entitlement to that. but we are expecting another quite imminent announcement from the palace. my sources tell me it will be before the end of the summer about william's future. he's a search and rescue

helicopter pilot and he's based in wales. but there's a big question mark over his future. that part of the force is being privatized. and it's very much seen as an opportune moment for prince william to step down. certainly what the british papers over here have been speculating. of course that will effect his role as a father. kate herself has spoken about her fears every time william goes up in the air to carry out usually a dangerous rescue mission. so that's something also that we'll be looking at over the coming weeks. >> what do you anticipate, kate? where do you see them heading over the course of the summer and into the fall? >> reporter: well, i think what we're going to see is some time spent at the cottage. it's on the kensington palace grounds. where diana lived. where william and harry loved living. their actual apartment is being renovated. so they're in nottingham cottage
3:34 pm
and that is rather small. we'll see pippa, harry paying a visit. when it comes to the queen, the baby will be take ton the queen. the baby will come see the queen in buckingham palace. i think before holiday, the baby will have to try out its attempts at bowing to the queen. she will then meet her great grandson who will be the future king. and after that we're going to see. i think certainly no foreign holidays. there will be time spent just the three of them. some of that time at her parents' house. and also scotland as well. but certainly we won't expect to see kate on any public royal engagements for some months yet. we certainly expect her to take much more maternity leave than mothers have in the past. for example the queen went straight back to her duties.
3:35 pm
>> were you surprised, victoria, we didn't see at least at the hospital the two siblings, pippa, prince harry come over and congratulate the newly born baby and his parents? >> reporter: just from what we've seen before in terms of how the royals get visits in hospital, i was a little surprised not to have seen pippa and harry at the hospital this morning. only because diana's sisters came to visit her in the hospital. having said that, i think william and kate were really relishing that private time in the hospital where it was just the two of them with the baby until they met kate's parents late today. and charles and camilla as well. i think really they knew the minute they walked out of those front doors and presented the baby to the world, it was unleashing a storm they will never be able to gather back in. so i think probably the families were respecting their desire to have the baby to themselves for just a few more hours. >> i was impressed, katie, the way william took the baby in the
