>> people around the city have called on to you withdraw, you're distracting from focusing on the middle class and ideas. >> if you want to play to the cameras, that's your ability. i'm having a serious conversation about issues. that's what these good people came to be here, let's honor them be here. >> reporter: a day in the life of scandal plagued weiner, a rousing speech on public housing. >> the fact of the matter is we need to change ways to do things. >> reporter: minutes after silent protests, women turned their back on him. man dressed as carlos danger. weiner admitted to reporters he fumbled his comeback not disclosing he sent sexual pictures and texts. >> perhaps i should have said it will come out at this specific time. >> reporter: he still isn't answering all our questions.

what do you say to people that it's beyond personal and also an issue of judgment and do you have the judgment to be in gracie mansion. >> it's a fair question and people have to answer that question for themselves. >> reporter: we asked new yorkers ourselves. doesn't bother you? >> no. i mean a lot of politicians have their issues and i just think this one we can put behind us. >> i think it's kind of creepy. i don't think i'd want that as my mayor. >> one open question what did weiner's wife huma know about the relapse. she learned about it last fall, said she was furious, leaving him but over time said it was best for their young son to stay together but open question is still how they got from that to yeah i think it's a good idea to run for mayor. >> it's a huge question and there are a lot of similarities to the first time around where he was defiant, defiant, until

he wasn't defiant and he dropped out of his congressional seat. we'll see how defiant he sticks in this. >> i don't see it going anywhere except to the polls. >> to the polls. dana great to see you. >> thank you, you, too. and new details about the woman at the center of the newest anthony weiner sexting scandal, sidney elaine leathers. at least 77 people have been killed in a high speed train derailment in spain. there's new concern about the cause. karl penhaul joins us by phone from santiago de compostela. >> reporter: it does seem from information we have received so far that the train may have left madrid at somewhat late and there are concerns that the

train could have been trying to make up time but all this investigators are still working on. the scene is surreal, a packed passenger train approaching the city of santiago de compostela. firefighters and emergency workers swarmed the scene putting out the billowing trying and feverishly evacuating the train. officials pulled injured and dead passengers through the windows, prying open doors to reach the most severely wounded. this morning, as the death toll and number of injured continues to rise, hospitals are calling for blood donations to aid in the recovery. initial assessments by investigators indicate this probably was not an act of

terrorism but a senior aide to the prime minister says they are pursuing all possible causes. meanwhile, officials are clearing the scene, forced to use trains to left the ravaged train off the tracks. it is more than 15 hours now after that derailment. right now police helicopters are in the air overflying the scene and those huge cranes continue to work. on the ground here, though, neighbors who lived alongside the track a sense of disbelief. i can see people now just standing, talking to themselves, muttering to themselves as they look out to the tracks they can't believe what they're seeing, chris. >> karl, thank you so much. i know people in the area are saying it's catastrophic. they're not completely sure they have everybody out of the train yet so please keep us up to date with the latest. karl penhaul from spain. now we're going to go to congress because they actually did a couple of things worth telling you about yesterday. first the government

surveillance program survives but barely, the house narrowly voted down a proposal restricting the way the nsa collects american's phone records and guess what? some action in the senate on student loans. brianna keilar is live at the white house with this. very exciting. you know which one i want to talk about that. let's start with the nsa. what happened on the vote? >> reporter: good morning to you, chris. i know you're obsessed with the student loans. this is nsa vote was fascinating and it's one of the votes in congress that has weird bedfellows, liberal democrats, conservative republicans teaming up almost passing this. it was very narrowly defeated 217-205 and it would have restricted how the nsa collects information about americans' phone records specifically it would have said it has to be tied to an investigation, it can't just be collected in some blanket way but it was defeated from support from key democrats and key republicans as well and

this i think is the end of it. the senate isn't expected to take it up and the white house is not on board with this. >> all right, so that's one issue. the other issue are the loans. we've been hearing this bubbling about what the senate may get done that they're trying to pass a bill they believe the house would like. what happened? >> reporter: it's done. how often can congress say all right we finished it up but it's pretty much finished because the senate passed this overwhelmingly and what you're going to see now is those rates that went up to more than 6% for students july 1st are now going to go back down to 3.86%. that said, chris, and this is something you have certainly drawn a lot of attention to, they are in coming years going potentially up because they will be tied now to the ten-year treasury note. they'll be tied to the markets and so you're going to see a cap that's been put in place here, 8.25% will be the cap for undergrads, 9.5% for grad students, a little higher for parents but that's as far up as it's going to go.

the thing about it is it's done. this is a permanent solution, this isn't something in the coming years will need a fix. >> except for the fact the rates could be a teaser rate. they could pop because of the treasury. they did something but the loans aren't being treated like the priority they are for so many families. >> it could get more expensive. >> thank you very much, brianna. today more than 1 million catholics are expected in rio de janeiro for world youth day and tonight pope francis will celebrate with them on copacabana beach. cnn's miguel marquez is in rio de janeiro with the latest. hey there, miguel. >> reporter: how are you there. yeah there's some 30,000 troops and police are trying to protect the pope and security has certainly gone up since monday and his arrival, despite all of that, there are still some concerns out there.

despite heavy security, another moment of concern while departing his last function the pope thronged by excited followers someone tosses something to him and he appears to catch it. and rio's mayor under fire for security lapses suggests almost mockingly more problems lie ahead. protests are not a problem, he says, they are a part of functioning democracies. the pope started his day in the southern city of operacita, a visit to the shrine of the virgin mary, the 16th statue found by fishermen is revered here. "the dragon evil is present but does not have the upper hand" he says. "our young people feel attracted to idols taking god's place offering money, success, power."

hypothermia exposure and dehydration. i'm sure there were prayers from the family, from him, promises and he was found. and all caught on camera, too. >> there are a lot of seas out there, that's my neck of the woods. >> it's like plucking a needle from a hay stack. >> that's real open ocean, off the coast of montauk you have the whole coast. very lucky man. indra, this is now tropical storm dorian. >> 60-mile-per-hour steady winds but there's so much uncertainty around it, moving west-northwesterly at 17 miles per hour. it is sllikely to weaken. lot of dry air in front of it. the second thing you need for a hurricane is warm water and look where it is, temperatures above 79 degrees and dorian hovering between the cooler and warmer waters. where it goes, if it goes over

warmer water it could hold together and if it goes over it slower, it could weaken as well so a lot of factors involved in there especially upper level winds, if there's a lot of shear we could see it break apart. the models are still holding it together and the thought of monday being north of puerto rico, still a tropical storm. one of the fun facts, this is early. typically we see a lot of warm waters close to the coastline. this is far out there starting right off south africa, excuse me, africa. july 9th when we typically see our first one. june 5th is where we saw our first named storm and we're still about a month ahead of where we should be for formation. it may seem like we're quiet but we're ahead of the game. this thing is trying to hold together even with all that ahead of it so a lot to be watching. >> maybe an early and longer hurricane season. indra, thank you so much, we'll be tracking that definitely over the coming days. let's head back to london.

palace. george was the name of the queen's father, king george vi who famously had a stammer portrayed in the movie "the king's speech." alexander for queen victoria and louis a nod to the queen' husband whose uncle was lord lou louis mountbatten. >> they're trying to make their son more like all the other boys when he goes to school. the only problem is he's going to be a king. >> reporter: after spending his first night out of hospital, kate and william whisked georgia away to her family's home in bucklebury. they released a statement saying "this is now a private and quiet time for them to get to know

the hearing. >> it smelled like sewage and human waste. >> we seriously put our guests in an uncomfortable position and that bothers us a great deal. >> reporter: the cruise industry says its new passenger bill of rights addresses the problem but critics disagree. >> a deeper look indicates the passenger bill of rights is filled with empty promises. >> reporter: into the troubled water comes this, a report allegeding that serious crime on cruiseships is underreported. the report says cruiseships reported 959 serious crimes to the fbi, but only 31 are posted on the coast guard's public website. that's because the database discloses only crimes no longer under investigation by the fbi. >> consumers have no way to find out what their real risks are before they take a cruise. >> well the industry told lawmakers that they quick lay dotted a consumer bill of rights which spells out what passengers are entitled to when things do

the republicans are trying this makeover, trying to remake the party's image by doing something to heal their relationship with latino voters and here you have steve king playing the role forgive me of dumb and dumber making that job harder. go to his own republican leadership, speaker john boehner saying let's not use hateful language. if we have policy disagreements, have policy disagreements. the entire republican leadership is running away from steve king and that's not the first time he's said things that opened a lot of eyes and had people roll a lot of eyes. the question is how deeply does it complicate republicans on the policy front and political front as they try to repair that relationship. >> i think it was telling. often you hear from leadership that one person's comment well this is a distraction from the debate, we're focused on the real issues. seems they could not get far away from his remarks far enough fast enough. >> but that's part of the problem. the republican leadership, speaker boehner and leader

cantor don't appreciate steve king, think he'd a gadfly and freak show. however he doesn't appreciate them either. he's one of the tea party guys who thinks it's not just democrats who are wrong on policy but his own leadership is wrong. this is part of the friction and tension within the republican party that complicates their efforts to get anything done, we're talking about immigration now, we'll be talking about the debt ceiling and others a few weeks down the road and the same characters and conflicts will emerge. >> it's important that he said it because this is what it's about on some level. there are people who believe this and that's something they have to deal with because they keep making up reasons why they don't like the bill but john, is it unfair for me to suggest that this is why there's resistance to this bill on some level because they're dealing with this misperception? >> there is no question that there is a slice of the republican party -- look, you can respect somebody who disagrees with you on policy but to say for every young illegal immigrant every young kid brought over across the border illegally for every one of them

brought over by the parents, they had nothing in the choice, a baby, 2, 3 or 5, for every one of them there's 100 young drug meals? he says he can back that up with the statistics. i'd love to see the evidence because it complicates the policy and if you go to the last election not just latino voters talk to asian voters, a lot of asian voters said they voted democrat because of people like this seem to be pushing everybody who is not white away from the republican party. >> i also want to ask you about this nomination the president made of carolyn kennedy as ambassador to japan. lot of people don't think nominations for am ambassadorships are interesting but it is. this has been rumored for a long time. she was a key supporter during the obama '08 campaign and it makes you wonder is this another way of saying thank you for your support on everything you did for me? >> yes, but and i'll say it this way. remember how important it was back in 2008 when then senator

ted kennedy who has now passed away and carolyn kennedy came out and gave the kennedy goodhousekeeping seal of approval for barack obama. she served in some advisory roles. this didn't fit her life in the first term but she says it does now. it's a way for the president to say thank you to caroline kennedy and also a way for the president to tell the japanese they matter. they always wanted a star. if you look at the list of ambassadors, democrats and republicans try to send somebody of great stature to tokyo because it matters in the respect of that relationship. tokyo is now getting a piece of camelot. caroline kennedy appreciates it and so does the japanese public. >> do you think this is a step for her to consider public office? >> chris know this is because caroline lives in new york. she thought about running back when hillary clinton's seat came

welcome back to "new day," everybody. anthony weiner refusing to bow out of new york city mayor's race even though he's admitted to another sexting scandal. this morning we learn a lot more about the woman on the receiving end of those messages. here's cnn's randi kaye. >> reporter: the woman at the center of the latest anthony weiner sexting scandal is sydney leathers who also identifies herself online as sydney elaine xo. we don't know much about her but we do know she's very comfortable in her own skin. these are just some of the pictures she posted of herself

on twitter that have since been removed. so how did she meet anthony weiner? lou colagiovanni is a friend of leathers. >> she allegedly contacted him via twitter, she was a friend. >> reporter: the conversations turned from politics to sex. this was the result, dozens and dozens of sexually explicit text messages and photographs, including images of his anatomy that are simply too explicit to show here. their online relationship continued for quite a while. >> it's been important for eight or nine, maybe even possibly a year. >> reporter: we came here hoping to talk with leathers about their relationship. friend told me that sydney leathers never mentioned anthony weiner by name but did say she had met a lot of people with strong political contacts

the moscow airport. he's been stuck in there for more than a month. we'll go live. what exactly is in a name? it turns out a whole lot of history for the royal baby. we'll look at the meaning behind prince george alexander louis' name. kate and will are staying at her family's home not the palace. what does that signal about his upbringing? breaking news overnight a terrifying accident in spain, more than 70 people killed in a high spain passenger train derailed. one train car snapped in two, another caught fire. spanish official says the tragedy appears to be linked to the train going too fast. karl penhaul is live in santiago de compostela. good morning, karl. >> reporter: good morning, chris. just in the last few moments spain's prime minister mariano rahoi declared three days of not mourning here in spain and also said the investigation will now take a twin track to find out

what was the real cause of this accident. as you suggest though figuring high on the list of speculation as to what caused this is that possibly the train may have been going too fast. what the prime minister also said though was the other priority would be put on identifying the dead and so their loved ones who have had this anxious wait now for the last 15, 16 hours, can be informed. the other priority is here cleaning up the tracks, taking away those railroad cars now for investigation. let's look a little at how this whole drama has developed. the scene is surreal, a packed passenger train approaching the city of santiago de compostela. derailed, as it hurdled around a curve. its cars strewn around the track, mangled. this car snapped in half, while flames burst out of another. firefighters and emergency workers swarmed the scene

putting out the billowing fire and feverishly evacuating the train. in the dark aided by flashlights, officials pulled injured and dead passengers through the windows, prying open doors to reach the most severely wounded. this morning, as the death toll and number of injured continues to rise, hospitals are calling for blood donations to aid in the recovery. initial assessments by investigators indicate this probably was not an act of terrorism but a senior aide to the prime minister says they are pursuing all possible causes. meanwhile officials are now clearing the scene, forced to use cranes to lift the ravaged train off the tracks. i think two facts are putting the scale of this tragedy in perspecti perspective for me. first a full one-third of the passengers aboard that train have been killed and one of those wagons we are told when it derailed flew around 18 feet

with anthony weiner on the mayoral candidate's panel a question about using facebook or twitter is really awkward. >> all i can say is oh, god, don't ask me. >> reporter: a light hearted moment to lift the tension. >> people around the city have called on to you withdraw, you're distracting from focusing on the middle class and ideas. >> if you want to play to the cameras, that's your ability. i'm having a serious conversation about issues. that's what these good people came to be here, let's honor them be here. >> reporter: a day in the life of scandal plagued weiner, a rousing speech on public housing. >> the fact of the matter is we need to change ways to do things. >> reporter: minutes after silent protest, a handful of women turned their back on him. his indiscretions literally followed him. man dressed as carlos danger. weiner's screen name for lewd messages. weiner admitted to reporters he fumbled his comeback by not disclosing he sent sexual

pictures and texts to strange women a year after resigning for congress for the same thing. >> perhaps i should have said it will come out at this specific time and this specific person but there isn't a lot better way for me to answer these questions. >> reporter: he still isn't answering all our questions. what do you say to people who say it's beyond personal and also an issue of judgment and do you have the judgment to be in gracie mansion? >> it's a fair question and people have to answer that question for themselves. >> reporter: we asked new yorkers ourselves. doesn't bother you? >> no. i mean a lot of politicians have their issues and i just think this one we can put behind us. >> i think it's kind of creepy. i don't think i'd want that as my mayor. >> that is an open question especially for women. how is he doing this and more specifically what about his wife? well cnn has been told that huma abedin, his wife z find out that he relapsed in sexting with other women last summer. in the fall, a friend of huma's

tells jessica yellin she learned about it and she was furious, said she was leaving him and over time she decided it is best for their young son to stay together so she once again tried to repair their marriage. she's obviously still doing that but again the question is how you go from repairing your personal problems to saying we want to put it out in the public sphere which is exactly what she's doing actively. >> they are so out in the public and huma has been a generally private person. when she was in washington she was a private person. you feel horrible for her and their family but where this goes we will watch and see whatever it is going to go we don't expect it now. >> a little telling, you haired the crowd applaud when he said i'm here to talk about you. i think that it's an easier question if the voters move past this than the media. will the media give him a chance to move past it. >> that's what he's relying on. >> great words for those who don't know, we'll see. >> thank you.

and rio's mayor under fire over security lapses suggests almost mockingly more problems lie ahead. protests are not a problem, he says, they are a part of functioning democracies. the pope started his day in the southern city of operacita, a visit to the shrine of the virgin mary the 16 inch statue found by fishermen in the early 1700s is revered here. he encouraged the faithful to resist earthly temptations. "the dragon evil is present but does not have the upper hand" he says. on crack cocaine even meeting some of those in the program. now despite how miserable it was last night, despite how miserable it is today, this is copacabana beach and these are pilgrims watching and waiting for the pope to show up here at the beach, ten hours they will be waiting, some of them looks like they slept here overnight and one note about the mongolians we talked about in our story there are a total of 500 mongolians. there are two others in town they've been looking for them, pretty amazing to be here and see the world come together in order to support the church and this pope. back to you guys. >> all right, miguel, thanks so much. let's talk more about the nsa leaker an update. edward snowden remains stuck in a moscow airport this morning despite russian media reports saying he had been cleared to leave the airport. the white house is turning up the heat demanding the nsa leaker be turned over to the u.s. immediately to stand trial. phil black is tracking the latest developments from moscow and brianna keilar is live from

the white house this morning to talk more about this. phil, first let me get an update from you. there was some confusion, did he have the papers to leave the airport? did he not have the papers? where does that stand at this moment? >> in the end he didn't get the papers, kate. his lawyer thought he was going to get them yesterday, the russian media started reporting he had received them and he was on his way out of the terminal but that didn't happen. his lawyer said there was a delay and he blames that on the complexity of the case but there's another issue, too, and that is that these decisions in this case are being made from high up within the russian government and the russian government knows if it lets him out of this airport terminal that will trigger an angry reaction from the united states >> that's absolutely right, phil, that brings me to you, brian brianna. the latest information was he able to leave or not, obviously sending the white house spinning making phone calls, trying to do as much as they can to get the outcome that they want. what are you hearing from how the white house is reacting this

morning? >> reporter: that's right the administration very much reacting here kate. secretary of state john kerry called his counterpart, this is the highest level of these conversations that we're aware of, called russian foreign minister sergey lavrov to say a couple of things, one to figure out what the exact status is of snowden amid the reports that he'll be able to leave the moscow airport, and also to put pressure on russia, if he leaves, this is what we were told by the state department spokesperson, lavrov was told by kerry this will be very disappointing to america and you may obviously think disappoint something a pretty mild word but that's diplo speak for the u.s. will be really ticked off if this happens. this has gotten way beyond the level of the white house and the administration wants. president obama had to weigh in a couple weeks ago with putin and this is something he didn't want to have to do, kate. >> the pressure campaign is on, phil, there are high level conversations going on but what will work and when will his s t

status change? what are you hearing about what's next? >> well, for the moment snowden has little choice but to continue waiting in this terminal. he's approaching five weeks since he arrived here and his lawyer says that it looks like hitting somewhere around that time but he could in theory receive the necessary paperwork at any time. until he learns any more snowden's lawyer says he is studying russian language and russian culture and now says he wants to stay here in the long-term, wants to settle here longer than the one-year temporary asylum that he's already applied for. >> while all of that is going on in moscow and russia, brianna. back here at home the house attempting to take some action or some members of the house attempting to take action to stop the surveillance program that edward snowden revealed. what is the latest? >> reporter: narrowly defeated. this bill would have said to the nsa if you're gathering americans' phone records as we found out from edward snowden they were doing it would have to

be related to a specific investigation. it failed. the senate's not expected to take it up. the white house wasn't on board with it. you have a lot of interesting bedfellows, liberal democrats and conservative republicans registering their discontent. >> thanks you guys so much. still remains a question when will he leave, what will he do if he leaves and no one has the answer. >> everybody will be waiting for it. a lot of news developing at this hour. michaela we talked about the train derailment in spain but we have one here as well involving chemicals. >> it's a concern in tampa. cargo train derailment at the port of tampa shut town the entire port all together. overnight at least 15 cars derailed, three are leaking ethanol. hazmat crew is on the scene to clean up the spill and firefighters are using foam to reduce chances it will catch fire. it's unclear what caused that derailment but happy to tell you no injuries have been reported. an update on the burning

natural gas rig in the gulf of mexico. two fire fighting boats have moved a safe distance away as they wave forward more reinforcements to assist in fighting that blaze, sparked after the rupturing of a natural gas well. the rig has partially collapsed. 44 workers evacuated, again no injuries have been reported in that incident. a tractor trailer gets too close for comfort as a wisconsin state trooper just pulled someone over for speeding. he was headed back to his cruiser when an 18 wheeler goes screaming by. the struck ripped off part of the front end. the accident there was caught by the trooper's dash cam. way too close for comfort. academy award winning jennifer lawrence getting star struck? she clearly really, really, really loves the dude. she showed it at comicon. >> i'm the biggest fan, oh my

74 miles-per-hour steady winds makes a hurricane. close to cape verde making its way through some open waters. that's the question, will it strengthen or weaken? a lot of factors could inhibit its growth. we're looking at a lot of dry air ahead of it. it needs warm waters. now it needs temperatures above 79 degrees to really stay strong. it's right on the border line between the 70s and the 80s. if it goes over warmer waters is stays together. once it goes over cooler waters it's expected to weaken. how fast it's moving is a timing issue. if it moves quickly it may move over quickly. currently the system is moving quickly. third factor being upper level winds they could see a lot of shear out there and that could break it apart. where is it going? here is the big bermuda high keeping us warm, that will steer it in the west-northwesterly

welcome back to "new day" everybody. one of the more notable details of the anthony weiner this most recent sexting scandal is his wife, huma abedin's conviction. she says she's still committed to their marnl ariage and his mayoral campaign. let's bring in cnn political commentator and former aide to president clinton paul begala. welcome to "new day," thanks for being on the show. >> thanks, chris. >> all right, the first question to put your genius to, does anthony weiner stick in the race? >> oh i think he definitely stays in the race. there's actually very little downside for him to stay in it. it's really tough for him to win and it's for a reason you alluded to earlier in the broadcast, chris. his strategic imperative is to make it about the voters, not about himself.

as a guy i used to work for used to say it to me if i make it about their lives than mine we will both be better off and i don't think anthony can make it about their lives, the voters in new york city any longer because it's all about him and i think that's going to be very tough sell to the voters. >> huma abedin, those who know her are moved greatly by her sense of self-respect, that she is known for doing the right thing. what is the simple explanation for why she decided to get out there in front of this? didn't do it for the resignation but did it here, why? >> well this is not a woman trap without options. she's strong, she's smart, she's successful. i have to say for me, i have to -- this is more a topic for dr. phil than a spin doctor, right, so i fall back to the pascal philosopher who said the heart has its reasons of which reason knows nothing. i don't think this is simply a strategic decision for her.

i think huma loves his guy, will stick with him thinks he'd be a good mayor. what you saw yesterday at the press conference was the real huma, very emotional but also very committed and that's why i don't think this is any kind of strategy. i think this is her revealing her heart which must be an incredibly painful thing for her, an intensely private woman. >> blaze pascal you say we gala i counter that with someone asking from shakespeare, has she eaten on the insane route that devours intel ject and takes it prisoner? when i was watching that press conference i couldn't believe she was there and then she comes up and she says the magic words, "i love, i forgive, i believe." i heard them and it did a shift in my little black reporter's heart and i said i think she does huma-nized anthony weiner and gave him a basis for sticking in the race with voters

not the media bus the bloodlust for the details would be too great. do you think she saved him? >> she's given him the only chance he's got. that's right, she could have ended this and no one would have thought less of her for that and i think she at least gave her husband a chance to stay in the race and to see this thing through but if this is simply a quest for redemption by anthony weiner that's not enough. the city of new york needs a mayor, not someone on a redemption quest. i think what huma did was necessary but not sufficient for anthony weiner to win. >> a neglected question i think you'll give us good perspective on. you look at eliot spitzer, mark sanford and anthony weiner, maybe they'll forgive you, maybe the bar is so low for politicians these days you'll skirt under it but should you run when you've had these kinds of problems? what about that question from a political acumen standpoint,

even if it's up to the voters why put them in this position of having to choose someone who could be so compromised, with other leaders? >> that's a great point, chris. i guess what i would say is as long as we're electing human beings, we're going to be electing flawed people and the thing i find -- i teach at georgetown, i've got teenaged boys and i find that younger people have no more expectation of privacy from public figures even from politicians. old school guys like me still believe in a zone of privacy and wish we did not know frankly so much about the private lives of our leaders. i think voters now, i think sadly frankly regrettably want it out there and expect it to be out there. maybe we're losing our capacity to be shocked. that's more of a generational thing and perhaps why the scandal is so new because the technology is new. certainly the sin is the most unoriginal sin but the technology maybe gives it a new wrinkle. >> his negative was at 37% his

unfavorable before this. that will be the number they have to watch and see how many voters they can claim. the silver lining may be if people are so done with hearing about these kinds of things in politicians it may force reporters like myself to focus on what matters more to voters. we cover this because we think it will work and frankly it's easier. it will be interesting to see if the voters send a message that i don't want to hear about this anymore, don't tell me, i won't watch you if you talk about this but i don't know. >> i would love it, chris. in fact the coverage on the new york media pact in connecticut today and the coverage i saw last night anthony weiner went to a forum on public housing and affordable housing and they began by booing him and ended by cheering and i kept asking the television set, what did he say in between? what's the substance? what he's going to do for poor people who need housing and frankly that didn't get into the piece i saw last night on new york tv. >> mr. begala, a pleasure,

the train jumped the track in a difficult curve. huma abedin considered leaving husband anthony weiner when he told her of the latest online sexting last fall. she decided to work through their problems because he is a loving father to his son. he faced protesters while campaigning wednesday, even a heckler who claimed he was the real carlos danger. weiner's online alias. firefighters making encouraging progress, the fairfield fires being 40% contained. fire spokesman says even though they have made gains homes and other structures remain threatened. they're dealing with two other fires burning in that state. we want to show you some horrific motorcycle accident video involving the grandson of jack nicklaus, that's nick o'leary, starting tight end for

queen elizabeth who met her great grandson for the first time wednesday at kensington palace. george was the name of the queen's father, king george vi who famously had a stammer as portrayed by colin firth in the movie "the king's speech." >> i not care to discuss personal matters. >> alexander for queen victoria whose name was alexanderina, and louis a nod to the queen' husband whose uncle was lord louis mountbatten. >> most have four names, some have five and some have seven. they're trying to make their son more like all the other boys when he goes to school. the only problem is he's going to be a king. >> reporter: after spending his first night of hospital in kensington palace, kate and william whisked georgia away to more humble surroundings, her family's home in bucklebury. they released a statement saying "this is now a private and quiet time for them to get to know their son."

the future king now living the quiet life in a commoner's accommodation. now the name george is splashed across today's headlines. "the sun" with a quote cover, the baby formerly known as prince alexander louis of cambridge, there's "the times" cover, kate and william stick to tradition by george." "the mirror" with the headline "boy george," not sure what to think about that, kate. >> you knew it was going to happen. we have a lot of fun with the headlines this week. we want to talk more with victoria arbiter, commentator and daughter of the queen's former press secretary. we have it, we've waited a long time wondering what would it be and we have the name prince george alexander louis. what do you make of the name? >> i think where they've been smart is they've given this child its own identity while

three names that are laden in british family reference and history. but you have to -- george is an obvious one, patriot saint of england, but alexander, thinking of the queen's middle name being alexandra, three former kings of scotland were named alexander but the important name is louis, it is william's middle name but louis was mount batten, charles' grand uncle the man he called his honorary grandfather. he was assassinated by the i.r.a. in 1989 which left a gaping hole in charles' life. i think they've paid tribute and homage to charles. >> for us we normally get named in the hospital before we leave. this is considered a pretty quick announcement of the naming. what do you make of that? >> really i think william is very keen for everyone to go back to normal, even at the hospital if you read between the lines in his brief comments to the press he said "i'm hoping

all of you can go back to their real lives so we can take care of our baby." he knew the furor would not die down until the name was out there. his thinking now is you got everything you need, pictures, interview, name, now go away. >> now give us a little bit of space and that's why maybe not surprising at all, you thought it was going to happen anyway that they went to bucklebury to spend time with kate's family. >> i'm surprised they went so quickly but kensington palace aside from their own apartment under construction vast portions of the palace are under construction, the noise, the dust, the dirt. bucklebury is serene almost like a movie english village. it's peaceful so a nice place for the new baby. >> and on his name there was a lot of talk and speculation leading up to the announcement that maybe william would do something as a tribute to his mother. does it surprise you that spencer or some kind of tribute to diana was not included in the name?

>> i was surprised. i had a good look at the spencer family tree. the second earl spencer was named george. i don't know that william and kate paid attention to that, that was a long time ago but there will be room on the second and third child where the pressure and focus won't sob intense. >> not surprising they stuck with traditional names. >> absolutely right. william and kate by nature are very traditional and george also, they don't get a baby naming book. they look at the family tree but george is really cool and trendy again in the uk so it's not so old-fashioned that he'll be teased mercilessly in school. it's a great, fun name. they've managed to check all the boxes here. >> a modern royal couple but little nod to tradition. >> exactly right. >> thank you victoria, great to see you. chris? coming up on "new day," a cnn investigation, a disgusting game of hide and seek aboard a cruise ship. why are crew members trying to pull a fast one on federal

all right everybody, about 45 minutes past the hour. new disturbing pictures for you this morning of a cruise ship crew accused of dodging health inspectors by hiding trays of food where? inside their cabins. to make matters worse it allegedly happened on one of the most luxurious ships afloat. cnn's investigative correspondent drew griffin reports. >> reporter: the silver sea cruise line builds itself as ul extra exclusive, small ships, personalized service and intimate luxurious setting a high-end experience that comes

with a very high end price, on average the company says a little more than $5,000 per week per passenger. >> every silver sea voyage is a feast for the senses. >> reporter: but passengers didn't know that feast might include this -- look at these, pictures taken by crew members showing meat stored in crew cabin sinks, pots and pans in crew hallways, wrapped food stashed everywhere except in the galleys, where it belonged. why? it's all spelled out in this damning report from u.s. health inspectors from the centers for disease control. it writes an organized effort was made to physically remove over 15 full trolleys of food, including milk, raw meats, pasteurized eggs, cheeses of all types, all hidden in individual cabins shared by two or three galley crew members in order to

avoid inspection. the surprise inspection took place after the cdc was tipped off. adriana colognia says he had a 40-day contract on board the silver shadow and night after night he and others were ordered to hide food in his cabin in case of an inspection. >> absolutely, sir, that's why i didn't even eat. i used to make a little pizza for myself on a daily basis and that was all because if you think about it, you gotta eat an omelet with the eggs that have been in a temperature high of almost 70 degrees, that would make everybody sick. >> reporter: the cdc finally figured out what was happening when a crew member sent these photos to federal health inspectors and maritime attorney jim walker. walker whose law firm represents cruise ship employees and wrongful termination and injury cases he's been told what you're seeing here is a common game. >> that's right, there's typically a scramble that takes place. this is what we learned from the

crew members. >> reporter: what is different is the cdc was tipped off and on june 17th staged a surprise inspection as the silver shadow docked in scagway, alaska. the company based in ft. lauderdale, florida, wouldn't give cnn any interview on the topic but did send a statement saying it's deeply disappointed by this specific and only unsatisfactory score. the company cited its long track record with the cdc of good scores, some above 90%, some as high as 100% and said in this case, it's taking action to fix the problem. >> they called it an anomaly basically. this ship scores 97 to 100. do we really think that this was the one time where they played hide and seek and they ran everything out in trolleys from the galley? and we just happened to catch them one time?

people in nine states so far. we'll look at how it spreads and what you can do to protect yourself from it. carolyn kennedy has stood by president obama, now he's putting her up for a hand some reward. the question is, is she qualified to be the ambassador to japan? let's begin with breaking news. new video of a horrifying train wreck that killed at least 77 people. that's the molt of derailment, the train jumped the track as it was rounding a curve. there are early indications that the train was traveling too fast. carl it live in santiago decompostela, and he has more. >> reporter: it is absolutely chilling. what we can see is that train comes toward the bridge action and seems to slam into that

bridge and then skew sideways. if you look very closely, a fraction of a second before that happens, about midway down the train, you see a puff of smoke or dust coming up. i'm sure investigators will be looking into what caused that. but, of course, then the video goes dark. that could be because the train then slammed into the post that had the surveillance camera. we've been trying to piece together what happened next. the scene is surreal. a packed passenger train aposing the spanish city of santiago decompostela derail as it hurled around the curve. this car snapped in half, while flames burst out of another. firefighters and emergency workers swarmed the scene, putting out the billows fire and feverishly evacuating the train. in the dark, aid i by flashlights, officials pud injured and dead passengers

through the windows, prying open doors to reach the most severely wounded. this morning as the death toll and number of injured continues to rise, hospitals are calling for blood donations to aid in the recoveries. initial indication are that it was probably not a act of terrorism, but an aide to the prime minister says they are pursuing all options. all right. karl penhaul following that terrific story for us out of spain. the video that came out, my goodness. >> it's still a developing scene. all right. another one of our lead stories this morning, still defiant in the face of more scandal. anthony weiner hears the calls for him to drop out, but he's not listening. he is staying. in the meantime we're learning

behind us. >> i think it's kind of creepy. i don't think i would want that as my mayor. >> reporter: one open question has been what did humana know about his relapse into sexting last summer. one over time she decided that it's best for their young son to stay together, so she started once again trying to repair their marriage. i've seen a plot lot of places she's very ambitious, but anybody knows humana, before she married him, she had a lot of very rich, very powerful people, and she decided to marry him for love, a, and b, she is also the closest confidant to hillary clinton, who may even be president. she doesn't need him to be in power. >> it seems there's something new every day on there. just a reminder, we're going to speak to one of huma abedin's close friends to get her perspective. all right.

president obama is resetting the agenda trying to get on the in front of the a looming budget battle. he's going to speak in jacksonville, florida today, after unleashing a plier attack on republicans wednesday. brianna keilar is at the white house following this for us. he's kind of reset the agenda three or four times in a year. what did you pick up on this speech that was new? >> reporter: that's one of the big issues, chris, what is new? i think you're trying toss president obama try to get momentum with him message. the problem for him is he's well into his second term, the iron is no longer hot, and he's struggling to get the upper hand, as he has some battled ahead with congressional republicans. >> it's good to be home in illinois. >> reporter: it's the political equivalent of hitting the reset button, leaving a steamy washington and with it his administration's troubles, controversies, surveillance

leaks, a stalled immigration overhaul, and turmoil in the middle east, taking his economic message on the road and taking credit as well. >> we've been able to clear away the rubble of the financial crisis. we're starting to lay a new for understandings for more durable economic growth. >> reporter: his case, unemployment following the financial crisis hit 10%. now it's 7.6%, acknowledging we're not out of the woods yet, but warning it is washington politics and republicans that could gum up the recovery. >> with this endless parade of distractions and political posturing and phony scandals, washington's taken its eye off the ball. and i'm here to say this need to stop. >> reporter: republicans say not so fast. it looks like deja vu to them. >> with auld build up, you would think the president is unveiling the next bond film or something, but in all likelihood it would

be more like a midday reunion of some '70s b-movie, because we have heard it all before. >> reporter: today the president will deliver a third of speeches, this time in florida, this comes as a poll shows the majority of americans disapprove how the president is handling the economy. senior administration officials acknowledge there are really no new ideas, about you it seems to be much more of a fight for the hearts and minds of americans. to that end you're seeing him trying to borrow from his message that worked so well for him. >> more of that coming up for sure. thank you very much. pope francis is preparing for a massive celebration for cop acabana beach today. it's expect security is expected to be tight. miguel marquez is in rio de

janeiro. what's the latest, miguel? >> yeah, he is holding a private mass at the moment and will visit a slum later on today, a very tough play in rio. it all gives concern about his security, and there has been an ongoing issue with papal security. despite heavy security, another moment of concern while departing his last function, the pope thronged by excited followers, someone tosses something to him, and he appears to catch it. in rio's mayor under fire over security lapses sited almost mockingly more problems lie ahead. protests are not a problem, he says, they are a part of functioning democracies. the pope started thinks day in the southern city of aparecida,

medicine for this. the mystery part is they don't know how people are getting this. in the past people usually got it from produce, so they're focusing their efforts on what produce might be causing this. 9 obvious question for folks is, can el do anything to not get it? any advice. >> i'm going to be honest with you, here, you can watch your produce, but really the cyclospora parasite is pretty sticky, so you may not be able to watch it off. you can wash your hands, but that's also not 100% protection. in some ways there's not a lot you can do. if you do get the symptoms, go see your doctor so you can get medicine quickly. there's always trouble when you hear that. you can watch your hands, but it's not going to help. >> which is why i don't do it. a lot developing this hour. >> you're not borrowing my pen

decisions in this case are likely being made from very high within the russian government and the russian government knows if it lets snowden out of this airport, it will trigger an angry reaction from the united states. after almost five weeks of camping out, edward snowden has little choice but to consider waiting. his lawyer says he's taken him some clothes and some classic russian literature, and now snowden is studying culture and language, because he wants to settle here, longer than the one-year temporary asylum he has asked for. a student loan bill is headed to president obama for his signature. the senate approved the legislation which ties federal lone rates to markets. graduate students will may more for their loans at 5.4%. the bill impacts some 7 million college students who are headed to school this fall. all right.

the current thinking we have is the dome of high pressure will pull it right to the west-northwest. it's staying through the ocean for a long period of time, but eventually by monday we're looking at still remaining a tropical storm, and pretty much right above puerto rico. thereafter, it looks like tuesday right around haiti and the dominican republic. there's so many factors that limit its actually getting there. we're hoping by the middle of next week that a trough pull it is away from the shoreline, but that's so far away. there's a lot of factor here, a lot of dry air to deal with. temperatures also may not be warm enough this time of year. so between that and the wind pulling it apart, there is some hope that it doesn't hold together, but this guy is trying its hardest. we will try our hardest to make it go away, even though we can do nothing about it.

thing, right? i'm not married, but anybody who's been married knows how hard it is. the reason why she's staying with him, and based on my conversations with her, it's pretty clear, she loves her husband and she has a young son action and she wants her son to know his father. from my perspective, it's commendable, with all of this attention and these difficult times for her to do whatever she can do to work through the problems they're going through. >> not many people have to deal with their marital problems in such a public way. how difficult the first time around and now the second time around? how difficult has this been for you? independents you can on imagine. going through something like this in private is hard enough, but when you're doing it in public and there are people who don't know you, maybe have never thought of you have before, but you're -- maybe they have seen you on television, maybe they haven't, saying things that are so far from who you are and

calling your character and your goodness as a person into question? it's deeply traumatic. >> my colleague jessica yellin spoke to a friend of humana's, who said when humana found out about it, said she was done, she was leaving him, and that was her mind-set for quite some time. what xhanged her mind then? some would stay this would be the straw that bo the camel's back. >> i think she saw that anthony was a good father to jordan and wants to make sure her son knows his father and has a relationship and she's interested in keeping her family together. i mean, that is absolutely right, you know, the first impulse, the first instinct was to get out of there and to retreat even further. in i object who knows humana knows she's a pretty pride person, but after time and consideration and just wanting to do what's best for her

family, that's what's been motivating her. >> you realize -- you're very close to her, and maybe in washington people know her as the person you always see in a picture over hillary clinton's shoulder at the state department, but this week was really the first time many people across the country had ever heard her speak, maybe the first time anyone had ever heard of her. i want to play a bit of what she want. listen to this. >> sure. >> anthony's made some mistake, both before he was in congress and after, but i do very strongly believe that that is between us. i love him, i have forgiven him, i believe in him, and as we have said through the beginning, we are moving forward. >> i can only imagine how difficult it is for someone to stand there and say that, but the woman that you see there in that press conference, is that the humana that you know? >> yes.

i mean, it's someone who has integrity and compassion, and is trying to do the right thing, who doesn't want the public to be misled. it's 150% quinch essential humana. it's funny what you want before, i've seen her speak publicly twice the first one was at the event we had this summer in anthony's campaign, and actually just now the first time i really saw the clip, because i've been travelingivities that's how private she is. >> that's how private she is. >> you co-hosted this fund-raiser for weiner's may i don't recall bid. will you be supporting his campaign now? this is news to you as well. you did not know about these revelations when you were hosting -- >> no, and i had no idea what was going on yesterday until my phone started ringing. >> does it change your opinion
