it is 5:00 a.m. in the east. it is very early. >> good to be back. first, paradise interrupted. hawaii bracing for impact from tropical storm flossie. watches and warnings are in and around the island. record rainfall, nearly 8 inches in the philadelphia area on sunday. look at that. that's a lot of water. and heavy rains in the carolinas as well-being blamed for two deaths. andrew petersons has been very busy. >> first we'll take you outside and give you the latest update on flossie. the tropical storm making its way to the island. you can see the storm dissipate. it's moving to the west at 17 miles per hour. it has actually sped up a little bit. steady winds 50 miles per hour leading it at that tropical storm strength. let's talk about the track.

where is flossie going? heading for the big island. their time, 8:00 in the morning. 10:00 in the morning, hawaiian time. heavy rain. 6 to 10 inches of rain even possible, even 15 inches of rain in areas where we see stronger winds. thereafter we'll see the track make its way through maui and through oahu. still in the line of the path there. that's just under tropical storm watch and we'll see that upgraded. westerly motion. the good news, it will remain a tropical storm. fun facts. it's very rare for a hurricane to be found in hawaii. the last tropical storm alone was omeka in 2010. last hurricane, 1992. definitely good news. hurricane flossie, there have one in 1997 in hawaii. the other thing everybody was

talking about is dorian. we expected this guy to break apart and he did. it ripped apart what was left of dorian. no longer is it being called dorian. 50% chance it could be developed. likely to rip apart. that will not be lasting. that is the good news at least in the atlantic. then we showed you the rain. unbelievable amounts of rain in philly last night, 8.02 inches of rain. that is breaking the record all time for one 12-hour period. that is exactly what they saw yesterday. for july, 13 inches of rain for the month, also a record. it was impressive. the storm has pushed on through. plenty of flooding in the area. here is the low. something should be drying out. not only the northeast but also in the southeast. scattered showers are possible. 4 to 6 inches of rain in north carolina on saturday. unbelievable storms kicked through the area also in

arizona. they saw heavy flooding out there. where is the flood rushing? it's got to be somewhere. kansas spreading into missouri. heavy rain possible. two to four inches of rain there. that matches up with our severe weather threat. matching up in the panhandle of texas. through kansas. flooding tlehreat with that as well. >> one busy day? >> yeah, unbelievable. >> you'll keep on it. thanks. to egypt now. violence that's turned that country into a political tinder box. 72 people were killed this weekend in clashes between government troops and supporters of the muslim brotherhood. that as the interim president is calling for calm and taking steps that could point to a state of emergency. reza is in cairo for us this morning. reza. >> reporter: mckayla, there is growing fear in egypt that we're getting closer to a very dangerous and explosive stage.

what you have here is a political conflict where both sides are in a deadlock. on one side you have the military backed interim government. on the other side you have the supporters of the ousted president, muhammad and the muslim brotherhood. you see the rhetoric racheting up. 70 people were killed over the weekend. hundreds killed in what was the deadliest day dating back to the january revolution. a lot of people killed were shot by security forces. you get the sense that something has to give. there has to be a turning point coming soon. many fear the turning point could be an aggressive crackdown by authorities against the major sit in, a major demonstration by morsi supporters. over the weekend the interim president called on protesters to come home. the interior minister used sharper words. he said a cleanup is coming. if that cleanup operation

happens, that means security forces will have to move a demonstration that has evolved into a small town. we were there yesterday. there are tens of thousands of people, families, women and children, who say we're not leaving until this divorcee is reinstated. if this cleanup operation happens, it will come with some bloodshed. a lot of concern in egypt about what's coming. >> a pivotal time. reza, thank for the report. a lot of news in that region. back to the negotiating table in washington for israel and the palestinians. negotiations set to take place qbes. they're talking over a possible path to peace. this comes a day after the israeli government agreed to release 100 prisoners. benjamin netanyahu called this a tough decision that had to be made. 79 counts of reckless

homicide. authorities still trying to determine if the train was traveling too fast when it flew off the tracks and into a concrete wall in santiago de compos compostela. it was the driver's fast. he's been granted conditional release. to italy in a horrific bus crash. 38 people have died including children. they were returning from a pilgrimage to a catholic shrine. the bus fell almost 100 feet into a heavily wooded area. it is not clear what caused this accident, but police say the bus did hit nearly a dozen cars before it flew off that bridge. back here state side, anthony weiner staying in the race to be new york's mayor despite the defection of his campaign manager. danny chattham quit after submissions he continued having

injuries but at least eight people have been arrested along with damaged stores. for a surfing competition, this is not rad at all. >> not at all. moving on to our next story. parents of 6-year-old nathan wasner, they say he is living proof that miracles do happen. they attended church for the first time since his near death experience two weeks ago. he was buried in 11 feet of sand for nearly 4 hours at the indiana dunes lake shore. the boy's mother said they feared the worst as rescuers frantically searched for their son. >> i remember that paramedic coming in and, he said, he's alive. and i don't remember anything he said after that. those were the sweetest words i ever heard. >> they expect him to make a

authorities in new york said they found the body to be a man of a best man at a wedding. a tragic boating accident killed the bride-to-be. >> reporter: the investigation into friday's boat accident will now focus on a time line. what happened and when. >> what we're going to do is we're going to bring in an accident reconstruction team. >> reporter: authorities say the driver of the boat, also a friend of the couple, was intoxicated charged with vehicular manslaughter and vehicular assault. investigators are looking into claims the barge that the boat hit did not have proper lighting. >> you put an immovable object that's dark in the path of recreational boaters, you have a recipe for disaster. >> reporter: lindsay stewart and brian bond were planning to marry on august 10th.

they decided to take a boat ride friday night up the hudson river. their boat hit a construction barge. 30-year-old stewart and best man mark lennon were killed. >> i'm the big brother but his heart was a lot bigger than mine. he's -- he's -- he was my rock. >> reporter: bond, the groom, and four others including the boat's driver, suffered serious injuries. >> they seemed very smitten with one another and very much in love. >> reporter: at the home they shared, a make shift memorial. lindsey stewart's family told cnn, pray for our loss. >> she's supposed to be married two weeks from today. it's just -- >> reporter: a tragic ending to what was supposed to be a great night on the eve of a wedding. >> remember than have a joyful wedding there will be waking. >> reporter: alina cho, cnn, piermont, new york. some incredible pictures now

are here from las vegas. that is a bus on its side in about six feet of water. the driver apparently tried to make it across 100 feet wide creek bed that had turned raging. the power of the water swept the bus 300 feet downstream. there were tourists on board returning to las vegas after a visit to the grand canyon. they were able to scramble out the windows. no injuries were reported. the local sheriff calls trying to drive across that wash the most silly thing he's seen. the death of a pastor, his pregnant wife and another member who were killed in a weekend bus crash. more than 2 dozen people were injured and eight are hospitalized. the bus was returning to the church after a trip to a camp in michigan. the brakes apparently failed as the bus driver tried to make a

turn. a helicopter crash in pennsylvania has left five people dead including a child. authorities say the chopper was en route from binghamton to an airport near allentown when it went down in bad weather. they found it in a wooded area not far from scranton. the ntsb is ending. a spectacular end for the pope's first mass overseas holding mass on a copacabana beach for 3 million people. >> reporter: the biggest crowds to date for the grand finale for pope francis' trip to brazil for world youth day. he led mass right behind me on a stage on copacabana beach. more than 3 million people turned out. many of them spent the night here lined up in sleeping bags along the beach, along the road, along the route that they expected him to take here. when he passed by in his pope mobile the crowds went crazy trying to hold him babies. one pilgrim managed to hand him

that will be the most important job in washington. there's fierce, fierce debate about who might be the front-runner for that. watch this debate. detroit is going bankrupt but won't derail plans for a new hockey arena for detroit. the stadium will bring jobs and critics say this is a bad use of funds. police take about an hour to respond to calls to detroit. 40% of the street lights are shut off to save money. huge debate about whether to go ahead with a big hockey stadium when you're in such dire straits financially. also, huge advertising merger. you'll hear a lot more about that. two ad giants. omnicon group and publicist. this combined agency will have a stock market value will have a combined value of 35 billion.

jewelry exhibition and walked out with millions of stolen jules. it's estimated at $50 million. it happened at 11:30 in the morning. the robber pulled out a gun and threatened to shoot the exhibitors and the people admiring the display. security guards why on scene during the robbery but unarmed. no one was fortunately unarmed. this is not the first time that the carlton hotel has been targeted by themes. back in may robbers made offer with $4 million worth of jewelry. the hotel is not just a real life crime scene. it was the setting for a 1955 alfred hitchcock movie, "to catch a thief." something please in caans have been unable to do. a second victim has been

apparently found after a tragic boating accident. a jet skier spotted what's believed to be the body of mark lennon, the best man to be, who was thrown from a power boat friday night. he was part of a wedding party on that boat trip. also killed, the bride-to-be. the fiance was injured. they were set to be married in two weeks. the driver of the boat was charged with vehicular manslaughter and assault. police believe he was intoxicated. he's staying in. anthony weiner is staying in but his campaign manager has left. his campaign manager was credited with getting him to pull into the lead. in italy 38 people are dead after a bus fell off a bridge and into a wooded area near naples. it was carrying pilgrims returning there a trip from a

catholic shrine. the bus hit 11 cars before going over the edge. some of the dead are said to be children. calls for calm in egypt this morning after a violent and deadly weekend left some 72 people dead. they are urging supporters of deposed leader to stop their boat incitement and hateful speech that is endangering the country. he's warning the government will take action. now they're taking steps that could hint at a state of emergency. it will give them powers. edward snowden is no closer to getting out of a moscow airport. no word when he might receive a certificate from the russian government giving him the freedom to pass through customs. that as the journalist who first wrote about snowden is promising more revelations. glenn greenwald says he will soon publish new information

about the nsa spying program including evidence that the nsa allows low level contractors access to detailed phone and e-mail records without approval. they were rivals, then colleagues. today they will be dining companions. president obama and former secretary of state hillary clinton will share a noontime private lunch at the house. no press will be present. it's not clear what they might talk about though it's always possible the 2016 presidential race could come up. >> pass the salt and the baton. that might be the issue there. from the east coast to hawaii, there is extreme weather to tell you about. the philadelphia area is drying out after more than 8 inches of rain fell sunday. that is a record. heavy rains in the carolinas are being blamed for two deaths there and hawaii, meanwhile, is bracing for tropical storm flossie. andrew peterson is tracking all of this for us. >> this is the big one. >> unbelievable how much is going on. we'll start with flossie. you can tell how much it's

weakened. it's winding down and tearing apart cooler water and sheer which is winds at different speeds. 50-mile-per-hour winds. it's moving west at 17 miles per hour. the latest track has moved a little bit farther to the south. it's actually sped up as a result of that wind speed as well or moving westerly at 17 miles per hour. the timing of it still expected to hit as the tropical storm on the big island. looks for them, 10 a.m. kauai time. anywhere from 6 to 10 inches of rain. 15 inches of rain when we see the winds out of the south. winds are holing together enough that they could see 4 to 6 inches of rain. we're still seeing tropical storm warnings and eventually kauai will get into the storm. on the opposite side on the atlantic ocean, we had dorian,

now we're seeing remnants. we saw a lot of sheer. currently, still about a 50% chance even though we're not seeing a circulation. 50% chance we could see it redeveloped. conditions not favorable. we're not concerned about dorian or the remnants. philadelphia, that is the news breaker. 8.02 inches of rain yesterday. it was unbelievable. this is the most rain they've seen any day of the year any one day. unbelievable for july. 13 inches of rain for the month. philly, a lot of flooding. all things to low. the lull is pushing off shore. they are going to get a break. the southeast getting a break. heavy heavy rain in north carolina on saturday. that, too, pushing off shore. we are watching this low back here entering towards the midwest and into the plains. we're looking for that heaviest rainfall today from wichita up through kansas city. two to four inches of rain possible there.

detroit will not be getting a federal bailout. jack lew says he's happy to provide advice to the motor city
