hello there, everyone. i'm john berman in for ashleigh banfield. the fbi just broke up a major child traffic ring arresting more than dozen and dozen of pimps. joe johns is joining us. it sounds like a very, very big operation. >> that's true. it's called operation cross country. it's done by the federal bureau of investigation in cooperation with a number of state and local law enforcement authorities. we're told it's the largest child exploitation and child prostitution sweep of its kind ever. about 105 children nationwide rescued, according to law enforcement officials. more than 50 pimps have been arrested. dozens of searches across the country. they looked into activities

going on at racetracks, truck stops, social media stops. the ages of the children involved, we're told, range from between 13 and 17. the victims, of course, have been removed and relocated, we're told. this all went on over the weekend and we're looking for more information now. a news conference is going on at the fbi here in washington, d.c., as we speak, john. >> joe, you say nationwide any sense of the geography and how they were connected into one big ring? >> no. we do not have all of those details. bits and pieces have trickled out over the morning. a press release issued by the attorney general in the state of nevada indicating that one of the arrests in cooperation with local authorities occurred in their area. but we just don't know the scope. we do know a number of cities, a number of localities involved

and a lot of suspects taken into custody, john. >> joe, we know it was big. more than 105 kids and more than 50 pimps arrested nationwide. we'll await that conference later. meanwhile, we could find out if james whitey bulger will take the stand in his own defense. his attorneys have stayed tight-lipped so far but there is speculation that bulger will want to testify. he's facing a slew of charges, including 19 counts of murder. if he's found guilty of even some at age 83, he'll likely spend the rest of his life in prison. robert fitzpatrick wrote a book about trying to stop bulger. this case has been full of fireworks. deborah feyerick has been live. bring us up to date on this

case. >> his lawyers have asked that the jury be sequestered during deliberations. prosecutors are against it and the judge is going to have to decide that. it's still not clear whether bulger is going to testify. they are going to testify over the period of two witnesses. key among them, a mother whose daughter was killed by bulger and her ex-boyfriend. she's going to be called to testify that her daughter was being sexually molested by the man and therefore he had a greater motive to kill her. also on this list of witnesses is a crime associate who is likely to take the fifth. the reason is that he was actually implicated in one of the murders. now, bulger's team is really trying hard to refute the notion that he was an fbi informant.

the cover of that book, that man is on the stand. he's testifying today and he was brought in basically to shut him down. he said he got a lot of pushback from fbi headquarters in washington, d.c., and that's why the folks out of headquarters said he was providing valid information against the mafia and the mafia at the time was the key priority. will whitey bulger take the stand? he's worried about his reputation not as a killer but as an informant. we'll see. >> that's right. in a way this is sort of a stage for him, deborah. >> it really is. that's the one thing that they have been pushing the defense

lawyers have not argued about whether in fact whitey bulger was involved in any of the killings. they never even asked substantial questions on cross-examination except for a few of the witnesses. they let the murders hang there in the air. it's really, was he really an informant and was that valid? that's what he seems to care about. at one point the judge basically said, what does this have to do? he's not even being charged with being an informant. that's what his defense team has focused on. john? >> deborah feyerick who has been in the courtroom for so much of it, thank you for being with us. overseas now, a memorial will be held tonight for the victims of the deadly train crash in spain. the judge has receipt the spain driver go but not until after charging him with 79 counts of homicide by what is called professional recklessness.

cnn's karl penhaul is joining us live from the site in spain. why was he released if he faces so many charges? >> as you point out, causing injury by recklessness as well and very few of those passengers walked away unscathed. under spanish law, there has to be some idea that he suffered and the passport is withdrawn so he can't travel outside of spain. he has to report in to the judge

once a week. and his license has been suspended while the investigation is going on. >> such a tragedy. so many lives lost. what can you tell me about tonight's memorial? >> reporter: really, we are outside of santiago and tonight this cathedral will be a symbolic journey's end for train 1, 51. it is here that the prime minister, members of the family will come for this memorial mass to honor the 79 dead. we are expecting quite a lot of crowds here and it will be an emotional scene, john. >> karl penhaul, thank you so much. we want to go to the mob boss james "whitey" bulger. his defense team is presenting his defense today.

will he testify? let's bring in our legal panel, glenda, i want to start with you here. as we said, the two big questions here are, will bulger testify and should he testify? >> well, i'll tell you, the golden rule typically is that you don't put a defendant on the established unless you're going to talk about it. he may have some things that he wants to tell but typically they don't take the stand. it will be very interesting if he does. >> terry, typically defense attorneys don't want their client to take the stand but you heard glenda say, if whitey bulger wants to talk and what do you do? >> you have to let the client take the stand, if you choose to. he can advise his client not to

take the stand but if they choose to, they are going to. as far as controlling what your client says, you can limit the type of questions that you ask your client and control them more on cross-examination but if they want to take the stand and tell their story, that's their absolute right. this is a case where he very well may want to tell his story and may do that. i think also because of his age he may be more sympathetic than he would have been at a trial 30 years ago. >> how nervous are you if you are the defense attorney about "whitey" bulger taking the stand? >> you don't want it to happen. i would be extremely nervous if my client "whitey" bulger took the stand. >> last night the defense filed a motion to have the jury sequestered during deliberations. the judge said she would take it under advisement. what does the defense hope to achieve with this? >> i think given the high pull

li publicity and so much interest in the trial, under the rules of court they have a right to file this motion but it's always at the discretion of the court. she probably will rule and grant the motion because you don't want there to be any argument on appeal that somehow the process was tainted but the question for me, quite frankly, is this too little too late given the publicity surrounding this trial? i mean, i really question the timing of this. >> exactly. carrie, if they haven't been sequestered so far, why will it make a difference once they go to the jury room? >> i agree well judge hatchett. maybe the team was expecting less publicity associated with this trial but it's been in the media and the jurors could have seen some of that. the defense team has less to

an indiana church congregation is grieving after a youth pastor and his wife were kimmed in a bus crash and their 3-year-old son survived. the bus was full of teenagers and chaperons. the driver told witnesses that the brakes failed as he made a turn. in italy, a similar scene to show you right now. at least 38 people heading home from a catholic shrine were killed after their bus went off a cliff. ten people survived. it hit ten cars before going off the bridge there. moving to egypt now where dozens were killed in clashes

over the weekend. military helicopters have been dropping leaflets telling them to end the supporters. they are bracing for possible crackdowns by the military. a flicker of hope for peace in another part of the middle east. israelis and palestinians are said to hold their first peace talks. this comes after israel agreed to the release of 100 palestinian prisoners. the meeting tonight is to lay the groundwork for more talks in the days ahead. iraq has been rocked today by a series of more than 20 bombings. at least 43 people are dead and another 200 wounded. most of the car and roadside bomb attacks have been centered in the shiite.

a deadly helicopter crash. it went down on saturday. wreckage was found yesterday in a wooded area in wyoming county. officials are not sure what caused the crash there. and this is a recipe for disaster. a jewelry exhibition at a hotel in cannes, france, and most recently a city prone to diamond thefts. an armed robber who stole millions of dollars yesterday is still on the loose today and value estimated at $136 million. that is a lot of jewelry and it's not the first time lately that this city has had to deal with this. live from the carlton hotel in cannes, what it security like today, erin? it hasn't changed?

>> reporter: john, let me just tell you that we got off the prosecutor's phone and they confirmed that $136 million figure, the amount in jewels that were stolen, they say, from the carlton hotel in broad daylight yesterday, they tell us that they do not believe that there was an police involved in this heist. it happened around 11:30 in the morning when prosecutors say a man walked into the hotel with a semiautomatic pistol. he entered a temporary ex hib bit which was featuring extraordinary diamonds and brandished his guns and threatened to shoot the guests and exhibitors before making away with $136 million in jewels. it's not the only jewelry heist to happen in the last few

months. about $1 million was taken from a novatel hotel room. following that, a $2.6 million diamond necklace was taken from a hotel party. plenty of questions are being raised as to how this could happen and why there was not more security, given the staggering figure, $136 million. >> as you say, erin, not just how did it happen but how did it happen again? you would think that the officials would have ramped up security. >> reporter: people are walking around and it's very much business as usual. there are even some jewels on showcase in the lobby, including sapphire and emeralds and diamond and low-key security.

hi, welcome back, everyone. communities across the country are cleaning up after a weekend of deadly storms. you're looking at live pictures right now of hickory, north carolina. there was some flooding there. the third highest water level there since 1940. a state of emergency was declared on saturday. floodwaters swept a woman and a child to their deaths. north carolina definitely got the worst of the severe rain. this is a damaged road in newton washing away and leaving a six-foot crater. now to philadelphia, you're seeing the side effects there of nearly eight inches of rain that fell yesterday. it flooded streets and knocked out power to the airport. eight inches in one day.

and in mohave desert, arizona, a tour bus tried to cross rushing water six feet deep, probably not a good idea. and in albuquerque, new mexico, they are cleaning up from the storm damage. chad myers is joining us. what is the latest in all of this flooding across the country? >> when you have storms in the summer, just the mugginess, you felt it in new york city, when you don't have a jet stream over those storms, those storms can't move and when they don't move, they sit there and rain for hours and it floods. now, another place that's going to see flooding, too, out here in the west and in the pacific for flossie, not a lot of weather has hit hawaii. you think it's out there in the middle of the pacific waiting to get slammed by a hurricane. there have been a couple, i watched the damage of that back in kuaui, it's going to be a 40

mile per hour storm and it will make some flooding. you see those islands on the pictures and there's a straight ramp up to the peak. all of the water has to rush down. let's look at the pictures from arizona and also north carolina. i think they are the most telling. what people get in trouble for, you don't understand how quickly this water can come up. they can wash through the ditches and overpasses in 10 to 15 minutes. look at this raging water coming out of arizona and the tour bus that got pulled off. this is a debris flow, not just mud. this normally is a very dry river basin. they call it a dry wash. there is never any rain in it until it rains, like it did over the weekend. the water goes from literally zero inches to a couple of feet in a couple of minutes and then the torrential rain in north carolina, we had showers like this in south carolina and also into georgia over the weekend

but not the damage that you're seeing right here across the coastal carolinas and it was a mess in the carolina coastal sections and even into piedmont, john, as storms would not stop. it rained for hours and hours and hours and then the water started moving. >> a mucky, muddy mess. thank you so much. >> yep. a professor accused of killing his wife by poisoning with cyanide. his behavior was so bizarre, he talked about her in the past tense before she was even dead. stay with us. doing back there? ow! that hurt! no, no, no, no. you can't go to school like this, c'mon. don't do it! no! welcome back, everyone. a research professor at the university of pittsburgh is accused of killing his wife by poisoning her with a lethal dose of cyanide back in april. robert ferrante has a preliminary hearing and at least for today he's not going to put up a fight. dr. robert ferrante is expected

to waive extradition and head back to pennsylvania where he faces criminal homicide charges. his arrest in west virginia on thursday ending a nationwide manhunt. >> he was relatively quiet. he knew there were warrants for him. said he was en route back to pittsburgh. >> he's anxious to head back to pittsburgh and show his innocence. >> he's accused of poisoning his wife, dr. autumn cline, with cyanide in april. dr. cline, seen here in an interview on the discovery channel, was the chief of women's gerology. police investigators scoured the couple's home collecting evidence there and at the university lab where ferrante worked. a three-month investigation led to this criminal complaint against 64-year-old ferrante, documenting alleged text conversation with his wife

urging her to go on a regiment for. >> the amazing of subpoena investigation that went in to determining that it was a homicide, that's what took so long. >> klein leaves behind their 6-year-old daughter, her death sending shockwaves throughout the community. >> we are stunned. she was vibrant. she has a young daughter. we were just stunned. >> now, we should make sure that lawyers for ferrante tells affiliates that he's heartbroken over her death. i want to bring in judge glenda hatchett and carrie hacket in atlanta. witnesses describe ferrante's

behavior as being odd even before his wife died. number one, they both worked at the same hospital, yet he requested that she be taken to a different hospital when she fell ill. number two, he was talking about his wife in past tense while doctors were still treating her. three, he had her cream ated without discussing it with her parents and no one in her family had ever been creamated before. it's affected the investigation. judge hatchett, let me start with you here. this makes defending him, i imagine, for his attorneys complicated. >> very complicated. i will tell you, john, i've read through -- we've gotten the copy of the complaint. carrie and i were talking about it. this reads like a crime novel and you have to wonder with someone of his medical background, researcher, professor at the university, why in the world he would do it, if

he was going to do it, would do it this way and it is very complicated but i'll tell you the toxicology reports, according to this complaint, are very clear about the levels of cyanide in her system. his whole behavior leading up to this, this is going to be very, very difficult, i think, to defend because he must have thought that he was brilliant enough to get away with it but they always think that they are smart enough. >> is it possible that this man is so smart, a neuroscience medic medical researcher, he would have been smarter than to kill her this way? >> that's a possible defense but it's not a very good defense because he purchased the cyanide two days before the killing. there was cyanide found in the home at the time that she was going into this seizure and about to die. there are too many pieces and physical and circumstantial evidence here to make that a very good defense, i believe.

>> he purchased the cyanide. it was an overnight rush order for cyanide. >> right. >> which there is no evidence that he was using in any type of his medical research. he put it on a university credit card. >> actually, he put it on a different credit card, john, for that very reason because it wasn't tied to a particular account for any grant purposes and he specifically had it ordered on a different credit card and rushed. so if you're going to do this, i mean, you've left so many pieces of evidence in this trail that just tie him to this crime. the cremation, not taking her to a level one trauma center. i mean, there are just some very bizarre pieces to this. >> i agree. i also think that there's a pretty clear motive here. >> yes. >> we found essentially through this complaint that there are witnesses that would testify that dr. klein was planning to leave him, was planning to

separate from him in the near future and i wouldn't be surprised if he had an inkling of that if he did, in fact, murder her. >> you also wonder why she was planning to get pregnant if she was planning to leave him. i didn't understand this lacing of this whole routine that she was going to start. it's a very bizarre matter. >> it's just beginning today with a court appearance in west virginia to send him back to pennsylvania. judge glenda hatchett and carrie, thank you for being with us. >> thank you. checking other stories that we're following right now, the fate of private bradley manning is now in the hands of a military judge. he's accused of aiding the enemy for giving u.s. secrets to wikileaks. the largest classified information in u.s. history. today is the third day of deliberations. jury selection starts for a woman who once urged her boss to

mob violence on the west coast. usually quiet huntington beach saw an eruption in the streets last night at the end of a surfing event. this went on for hours overnight before police were finally able to get it under control.

cnn's stephanie elam is joining me live from los angeles. how did this get started? >> it's a mess. i hope nobody was in the port-a-potties. you're talking about eight days this surfing event was going on and yesterday things just got very rowdy. take a look. complete chaos and near anarchy. as the u.s. open of surfing, a skate and surfing event held in huntington beach, california, turned into madness after a large crowd gathered at the competition and began rampaging, tipping port-a-potties. >> it started like with a fight and it broke out. they were tipping port-a-potties and then the cops started to move in. they were throwing tear gas at everyone. everyone was plugging their nose and coughing and dodging into stores. everyone was just dodging down main street. >> >> all i tried to do was

support my life that i pay good money for. >> reporter: responders were joined from all over orange county and were forced to shoot pepper balls at the rioters. roaming the streets, attempting to cause disturbances all around them. this morning, after eight arrests and a long evening of battling chaotic crowds, police finally regained control, restoring some order to the palm tree-lined streets. and huntington beach is the kind of town where people can walk around. there's cute little restaurants, bars around there. it's a beach community. unbelievably, despite all of the video that you saw there, john, nobody was hurt. >> well, that's lucky. still, it did go on for an awful long time before police were able to get it under control. the question is, why did it take so long? >> i think part of the issue was that they had to get help from elsewhere within orange county. they had to get reinforcement to control the crowds.

it snuck up on them, how quickly this was escalating. >> stephanie elam in los angeles, what a mess. >> rioters also broke into a bike shop there. joining us is owner of the easy rider bike shop. bert, how is your store doing? >> we suffered a front window taken out by a stop sign. i saw the stop sign being ripped down and i thought it's going to come through our window and sure enough it did. as soon as that happen, the looters took a bicycle and i grabbed one out of their hand and a lot of the locals that know us came in out of the crowd and started backing people off saying, hey, this is our shop, back it off. they helped us out a lot, the locals did. >> it's nice that they were

there for that assistance. we're looking at pictures that we can see of your shop, the glass is shattered, people boarding up windows. >> right. >> i have to imagine you've never seen anything like this before. what was it like to be in the store as it was spiralling out of control? >> well, it was like you see this stuff in the movies and you don't think it's ever going to happen to you and when it does it's like a total shock and you kind of go in a flight or fight mode and that's what we did. we pulled our merchandise back and backed people out of there and kind of went from there. >> did you get a sense that people on the streets were looking to hurt people? >> no, i think it was just some sort of thing that went over people. once they got the sign down, what's the next thing to do? hey, there's big windows there. let's throw a sign through the window. we don't know for what reason. but when people get into a mob

and act like that, that's what ends up happening. >> mass stupidity ends up happening. bert etheridge, we're sorry that your store suffered damage but luckily it was not worse for you. >> yeah, we're very thankful that it was not worse. we have live pictures from philadelphia. there was a building collapse. kyw is reporting that it was a row house. first responders are just now getting to the scene. we're just learning the details. we'll bring you more as soon as we find out more. a few weeks ago there was another building collapse in philadelphia. there were death in that. sensitivity is very high. you can see firefighters checking the scene out from a ladder above the building nearby. we'll get more information on this as you can see injuries were reported in this building collapse. we understand it might be a row house. it certainly looks that way from these pictures. stay with us for more details as

that there were injuries there. it happened on the 400 block in south philadelphia. these moments are just from moments ago. we don't know how many injuries but we know philadelphia fire has been rushing to the scene there to get a sense of the situation. you can see up on the roof there nearby they are trying to peer in and get a first look there. sensitivities obviously very, very high. it was the beginning of june where there was another building collapse. a building collapsed on to a thrift store killing six people. that just happening not even two months ago and now this apparent collapse among some row houses in south philadelphia. again, the exact area is the 400 block of daily street. here are some aerial pictures provided by our affiliate kyw and they say that firefighters have been distachpatched to the

area. it's a pretty densely populated area there in south philly. you see firefighters and what looks like a construction crew walking nearby there. i don't think they would be so close if they were in fear of imminent danger or a further collapse. we're also told that the local gas and utilities have been asked to turn off the gas to that immediate area. that could be just as a precaution any time something like this happens you want to make sure there isn't a secondary incident or accident from a gas leak or something along those lines. again, this happening just a short while ago. these pictures of a building collapse in south philadelphia in this row house area. we're getting more information and we will bring that to you the moment it is in to us. meanwhile, ariel castro's son is speaking out, appearing on nbc's "today" show. he says he doesn't want anything to do with his father now. >> i think that if he really can't control his impulses and

english or chinese is that his campaign manager left but that weiner is not quitting. that was his message today to about 200 senior citizens. his focus was on the middle class. he said at the end of the day he's here because it's important for the people of new york especially for seniors. he says that one of the things that's extremely important is affordable housing, be safety for seniors and he wants to make sure that senior centers like these stay open. i had some conversations with folks who were there listening to anthony speak and they tell me they are supportive at this point. here is what one woman had to say. take a listen. >> will you be voting for him in. >> yes, yes. because i like him. he's very nice. he do a good job.

he did something wrong. we could give him a chance. that's good. >> reporter: everybody has been asking and wanting to know about his response to the democratic leadership asking him to quit, to leave. we asked him that question right after his brief remarks to the people at the senior center. here is what he said. i'm not going to take my talking points from pundits on sunday shows. he's in the race and he does not plan to leave. >> he's made that clear. it's interesting to hear from a voter right there. one of the questions has been is there a media creation. does the media care more about his sexting issues than actual voters do. decides that woman, did anyone inside there confront anthony weiner about these sexting
