he would do this thing all the time. he could come back to the press department and exchange in these. john paul would do this in five or six languages. it would make you feel like an idiot because you didn't speak all the languages. pope francis touched on all the hot button issues of the catholic cluhurch. it was a remarkable news day on the vatican beat. >> john, pope benedict xvi would never have done anything quite like this. nothing was off limited. he discussed the role of women. do you think this signals a change in tone on that issue?

>> reporter: i think you're right. we have a change in tone rather than on teaching. all the hot button topics came up. francis did not signal any substantive change in the doctrine or discipline. on women he affirmed that woman's ordination is off the table. he wants women to play much more important role for church and he wants a new theology of women. that's a new reflection where women stand many the plan of god. that's breathtakingly new in terms of tone. what we have going on is the emergence of the people's pope. a pope who wants to be the pope of everyone. not just those who show up on mass for sunday morning but the athiest of the world. >> it's a very different to see.

always a pleasure to see you. he said he's already being approached to write a book about this pope. he's only been in the job a few months. >> incredible. can you imagine being down at copa cobana streets. he's a rock star. firefighters are on the scene of a building collapse in philadelphia. we're looking at live pictures. wyw reports there are injuries but we don't know how many. it's in an residential area. we're working to get more information and we'll keep you updated on developments. let's look at spain fallout from last week's horrible train crash there. the driver now charged with 79 counts of homicide, reckless

behavior the warrant says. that's for each of the people who died, of course. >> we're following that story in spain. we'll go live to carl in just a moment, but first. this one in southern italy. at least 38 people are dead. this after a bus plunged off a bridge and into a ravine last night. this happened just east op of naples. the bus slammed into is 11 cars before going off the bridge. >> the investigation just getting under way. already hearing reports like there were no skid marks. what are people saying so far? >> reporter: well there were no signs that this bus driver tried to stop.

it broke apart. they are facing serious injuries. many of them holding onto life by a breath. tomorrow there be a massive funeral. the mayor of that town spoke today. just devastated. these families that had probably taken their only summer vacation to this place and have it end to tragically. the town mourns tomorrow that the loss of so many people in this tiny community. >> it's extraordinary that anybody survived that crash considered how far the bus fell. are any of the survivors speaking out? >> reporter: no. so far we have people on life

support and with missing limbs and facing paralysis and other devastating ailments and injuries from this accident. there were also ten people injured in the cars that the bus hit on the upper highway before it careen and went off the overpass. those people too are in hospitals. they have been talking out saying how the bus hit them add if they were toys before it went out of control. again, no apparent skid marks on the side of the road before the bus went over the edge. that's the focal point right now. >> terrible, terrible. >> thanks so much. to the latest on the deadly train crash in spain. a memorial service for the victim of last wednesday's crash gets under way at next hour. >> an american woman from texas was among the 79 people killed. she was on her way to a catholic festival when killed in that wreck like so many other people. her husband was injured. the other american who died was

a woman from virginia. her son-in-law says the family is devastated. >> one of the best women i've ever met. a great mother. a beautiful person inside and out. wonderful soul. she's been an amazing person to everyone that she's ever come in contact with. >> the driver of the train faces homicide charges. carl, what do we know about the driverer and those charges he's facing? >> reporter: let me set the scene a bit. the bells are now beginning to toll for the call to mass for this memorial mass. we're expecting the prime minister to arrive shortly along with members of spain's royal family. this really is the official vent

but it must be said in the days since the train crash last wednesday well wishers have been leaving their own tribute to the victims over there by the cathedral railings. there are dozens of lighted candles. there are flowers that have been pushed through the railings in memory of the 79 who died and there are a lot of wooden sticks placed against the railing. that's significant because this square, this cathedral is journey's end for thousands of pilgrims who come each other. today is symbolic end for train 151, the train that crashed last wednesday. the victims will be remembered in this memorial mass. as far as the train driver is concerned, yes, around midnight he left the courts here in santiago.

the judge has charged him with 79 counts of reckless homicide in relation to that accident. the judge did give him conditional release. he must come to court once a week to report. his passport has been withdrawn to prevent him from traveling outside the country and his train driver's license has been suspended while investigations continue. >> we appreciate the reporting. thank you very much. we'll watch for the live memo memorial of the victims of that crash at the top of the hour. in some of the local press the police is saying the driver admitted to being careless in his driving and he wished he had died. >> he had been killed in the accident. skr just horrible for those people. an armed robbery in cannes result in a jewelry heist worth

welcome back. firefighters still on the scene of that building collapse we mentioned in philadelphia. our affiliate there kyw reporting there are injuries. wyw saying at least seven people injured after the collapse of a home. we don't know for certain the extent of those injuries. apparently what happened with one row house collapsed. you can see it there and some of the homes surrounding it partially collapsed as well. the scene again south philly in what appears to be a residential area. it's not clear at the moment but here is what one witness is saying about the collapse. >> well i was laying in bed and what happened is i just jumped up. i went outside. my mom said the house collapsed.

i threw on my shoes and ran down there and helped three people out of the house. you smell light gas but it was hard not to go in there and help them out. >> this is the 400 block of daly street. we're working on getting you more information. we'll keep you updated. glitz, glamour and one spectacular jewel heist in kcanne. it's the third such heist around the city since may. >> reporter: it's a story out of a hitchcock film. one man walks into a hotel in cannes france and walks out with $53 million worth of diamond jewelry. >> diamonds, the only thing in

the world you can't resist. >> reporter: the setting for the iconic movie "to catch a thief" was the sight of one of europe's biggest jewelry heists sunday morning. >> nobody stopped him. there was nobody around. they just gave him $40 million worth of jewelry. >> reporter: a robber whose face was covered by a hat and scarf threatened to shoot kpiexhibite. it's become a magnet for jewelry theft. in may a $2.6 million necklace was taken from a hotel party. later that same month over a million dollars worth of jewels were stolen from safe in a hotel. this come tws two days after a member of the pink panther jewel thief gang escaped from a swiss prison. it's too early to say if there's any link.

authorities are looking through surveillance footage of the crime. >> diamonds are like cash. they are the most concentrated form of wealth on the face of the earth. they can be very influential in acquiring weapons or drugs or anything we want to keep out of society. >> reporter: prosecutors just confirming to cnn they reviesed the figures from $53 million to $136 million in jewel theft. they added they believe this man had no accomplice and he was acting alone and he was carrying with him a semiautomatic pistol. so far more questions than answers why security was so lax

around that kind of jewelry. >> it seems ridiculous. you have a hundred million something worth of jewelry lying around and a guy walks in with a handgun and walks out. what's the security like now? there's security still on display. >> reporter: that's one of the things i thought incredible. i walked through the lobby and didn't look like anything happened. they still have jewelry cases out containing emeralds and sapphires. this particular exhibition which is a major global diamond house, it was supposed to be temporary. we're told that exhibition is closed but there's still diamonds and sapphires in the lobby. >> unbelievable. we'll be watching you to see if you're wearing a necklace in the next day or so there in cannes. >> $136 million, what would you

all right. we're still keeping an eye on this collapsed building in south philly. there's still firefighters on the scene. you can see the damage. apparently one row house collapsed as you can see there but also pulled down parts of neighboring houses as it did so. our affiliate kyw is reporting injuries, seven of them. one of them is a child. authorities spoke a moment ago. let's listen. >> six people have been transported to jefferson. one person is in critical condition. one child has been transspoport. there was a worker inside who is in critical condition. he has burns on his shoulders and arms. we have the fire marshal going over there. the house was not occupied. it was being rehabbed. someone was inside rehabbing it.

that's all we have so far. as far as evacuation, it's going to be the school. the fire is under control now. the commander is putting it under control. >> still keeping an eye on this. the report from our affiliate is seven injured. it was difficult listening to him whether he totalled eight. the house was under renovation when this occurred. we're continuing to monitor. we'll give you any developments as we get them. this is an interesting story that's coming up. they're one of the most marginize alized groups. they try apply so dangerous sometimes it cost them so dangerous. we have the story of how some of the them are finding their voice through journalism. >> reporter: they're often misunderstood, freakily abused and killed.

help them write a book from the perspective of those who have known the horrors of life in the streets and have survived to tell their story. she came up with the idea of creating a workshop while doing stories on prostitutes and learning they felt misunderstood. >> i think by training them everybody can be a journalist. i feel it's a duty to tell their story. >> reporter: it's the first journalism project in mexico to teach prostitutes how to tell their own stories. as a transvestite prostitute laura says her access and insight makes her the right person to tell stories like her. >> those i've interviewed are in their 50s and 70s. they are veterans and it's difficult to talk about this issue with a stranger. i can relate to them and we can understand this better. >> they're going to write a book. that's the level of interest from publishers and the public?

>> there should be a lot of interest. the good thing they have going for them is they are working a journalist who is highly recognized in mexico. she's writes for one of the largest newspapers in mexico. she's telling them how to write an hopefully how to get recognition. they are the bottom of the totem poll. if you think of murders that never get the attention and never get solved, you have cases of abuse that are incredible to talk about. when you think about a project that will put together their stories which are horror stories, there will be a lot of demand for it. >> good to see you. now to new zealand where a chef is getting a blunt message, you're too fat to live here.

building has collapsed in south philadelphia. we've been closely following the story. our affiliate kyw reports there are injuries. here is one of the witnesses. >> i saw the whole house was down. i saw the house next to it. it was falling over. i saw a fireman. they were hosing him down with the fire hose. they threw this baby out the window because the girl was on fire and the fireman had to catch the baby and all. >> what extraordinary. >> as we're listening to the emergency worker earlieearlier,d do the math and it was eight injured including a baby. the house under renovation when it occurred. there was within worker inside when the collapse happened. eight injured. we're keeping an eye on them for you. let's continue on here now.

a crucial u.s. ally in turmoil. we're talking about tensions which are high in egypt today after violent and deadly confrontations over the weekend. also fears of a major crackdown by egyptian security forces. >> that is increasing the fear factor among supporters of ousted president morsi. they are backing off from these claims or state of emergency at this point. is that right? >> reporter: there are messages that they are backing off. new information on the past few hours. the spokesperson for the president. the interim president announcing at this point there are no plans to declare emergency law. that's significant because over the past few days there was

growing speculation and concern that perhaps the government could declare emergency law in preparation for a crackdown against supporters of the ousted president morsi. seemingly that's not happening at this point. that could ease the anxiety but still you get the sense this conflict is moving towards a dangerous stage because the violence is escalating. more people are being killed and there are still signs that more bloodshed could be ahead. for nearly a month thousands of morsi backers have staged a sit in at an east cairo neighborhood. they won't leave until morsi is president again. at this point chances of a comeback for morsi and his muslim brotherhood movement seems smaller than ever. morsi and several aids are still in custody. several brotherhood leaders are

wanted by authorities and increasingly morsi supporters are being killed. scores were shot to death on saturday when they clashed with security forces. it was the deadliest day in cairo. the interior minister said pit was pro-morsi supporters who attacked first. the overwhelming number of deaths have been supporters. they're firing at unarmed protesters.

welcome back. the stability of iraq is in question as the country erupts in more deadly violence. violence that's not been seen in years. >> next door in syria the civil war has killed a hundred thousands people. could these two hot spots converge into larger regional conflict. >> nick, in the last few months 2500 people dead in iraq. the sophistication of the attacks increasing and so the the frequency. it's starting to feel like 2006. >> reporter: and the numbers are beginning to immulate that too. these attacks today, 20 separate attacks. over 40 killed. 200 injured.

really the sectarian divide is fueling so much of this. he's under pressure for failing to provide services. there's massive security lapse. a huge jailbreak last week. it seems daily these bombings occur. so much of the anger coming from across the border. >> we can't just leave it with iraq. many people talking more and more about the violence in iraq and the civil war in syria morphing into one big conflict. what signs do you see of that happening or worsening? >> the u.n. themselves have come out and said they believe that

the wars in syria and iraq are merging into one conflict. much of that violence imported back into iraq as well. you see significant developments today inside syria where we have seen the regime take hold of an important district. the rebels have been holding that for a long time but now the regime have it. they have a better hold on this town. as the violence continues inside syria we see the sectarian hatred region. we're seeing wars on both sides of the border becoming one. >> thanks. none of it helped by the jailbreak we saw take place are hundreds of al qaeda and rebel leaders were freed.

>> you spent so much time in iraq. when you see what's going on there, could you ever envisioned this happened? >> there was the sense it would. the sunnis would rise up. they are feeling marginalized and the opportunist step in like al qaeda and the like. i spent a lot of time in '06 and '07 when it was at its worst. it's incredibly worrying if it does morph into be one war with syria as well. it matters to americans as well. >> definitely does. coming up, apple launches an investigation into suppliers factories this china. chances are,
