thousands of fast food workers have walked off in seven cities to fight for better wages. i'm wolf blitzer reporting from washington. we begin with a dramatic scene playing out now. the scene of a building collapse in philadelphia. authorities say eight people are injured. one critically. the deputy fire chief says a contractor was doing rehab work in a vacant home when it simipl collapsed. witnesses told our affiliate kyw they heard an explosion and smelled gas afterwards. another witness describes a dramatic rescue. >> i saw the whole house was down. the house next to it was falling over. i saw a fireman. he was burned up. they was hosing him down. they threw this baby out the window because the girl was on fire and the baby had to catch the babyman. >> firefighters caught the baby dropped out the window?

>> yes. >> that was pretty amazing. were they saying you can drop her or him in. >> the girl just threw him out the window and was hoping the firefighters caught. >> last month a four story wall of a vacant building collapsed. six people were killed. we're going to keep you updated on today's collapse. obviously, very dramatic pictures. the fbi broke up a child sex trafficking ring saving 100 children. what are we learning? >> reporter: this is something called operation cross country. it's an ongoing crackdown on child prostitution. the sweep with fbi agents and officials occurred over the weekend in 76 cities nationwide.

authorities said 150 pimps were arrested. 105 children were used for prostitute. some of those children were identified. listen. all right. authorities say the operation essentially targeted a variety of individuals in a variety of different places. some were found on social media. you think you've heard of operation cross country before it's likely. it appeared over the last decade. now i think we have the sound bite. >> this operation targeted venues where girls and adults are operated for commercial sex. that includes street tracks, truck stops, motels, casinos, internet sites, social media platforms and the like.

the children recovered range in age from 13 to 17 and 21 of them had been previously known to our partners. >> reporter: it's a huge operation over the weekend and a huge operation over the last decade or so. they recovered shotgun like 2700 children from the streets. >> do we expect anymore arrests to come or is this the end of this specific operation? >> reporter: it's not totally clear, but we know this investigation is an ongoing investigation. the question is whether they got all the people they were looking for. >> thank you. a boat ride to celebrate an upcoming marriage takes a tragic turn. instead of wedding plans, family members are preparing for a funeral. investigators are trying to piece together what killed the bride to be and the best man. >> reporter: this was meant to

be a celebratory cruise on the water. something went terribly wrong friday night and this boat ride quickly turned fatal. the investigation into friday's horrific boat accident that killed a bride to be and best man will now focus on a time line. >> we're going to bring in an accident reconstruction. >> reporter: authorities say the driver of the boat was intoxicated charged be vehicular manslaughter and assault. they are looking into claims that the barge the boat hit did not have improper lighting. >> you put an immovable object that's dark in the path of recreational boaters, you have a recipe for disaster. >> reporter: they were planning to marry on august 10th. they decided to take a boat ride friday night. the small power boat carrying

six people hit a construction barge near a bridge. 30--year-old stewart and best man were killed. >> he was my rock. >> reporter: the groom and four others including the boat's driver suffered serious injuries. >> they seemed very much in love. >> reporter: at the home they shared a makeshift memorial. lindsay's family told cnn pray for our loss. >> she's supposed to be married two weeks from today. it just can't end like this. >> reporter: a tragic ending to what was supposed to be great night on the eve of waedin ia w. we're told the groom is still? the hospital with various head injuries. imagine dealing with the physical recovery while also dealing with the emotional pain

northwest from philadelphia. the coroner says three men and one woman also died. the wreckage of helicopter was found sunday afternoon. the cause of the crash is unclear. air traffic controllers lost contact with the helicopter around 10:30 sunday night during bad weather. another tragic accident in italy. 38 people were killed when a bus plunged off a bridge and into a ravine last night. it happened east of naples. witnesses say it appeared the driver didn't try to slow down or stop.

most of them are badly injured. the bus was carrying religious pilgrims who had just visited a shrine. tragic bus crash in indiana has killed a youth pastor, his pregnant wife and a chaperon. the accident has devastated church members. >> reporter: good afternoon. it's a very quiet monday afternoon here at colonial hills baptist church. i'm told only a couple of people are inside the building despite the number of cars you see. it's less than two days after the passenger bus filled with their youth group overturned onto keystone avenue here in indianapolis. we're told the driver told police his brakes failed on the way home from summer camp in michigan as they were exiting a highway. the bus crashed into a center

median overturning. 37 people were on board. 26 were taken to area hospitals and three were killed in that accident. those were youth pastor chad phelps, his wife who was eight months pregnant and their unborn child died and another mother tonya winedorf. six are being treated. they are all in good or fair condition. obviously a huge shock to this community as a whole. the mayor visited with members here at colonial hills. he said the faith of this church cannot be overstated and that's what they are clinging to right now. they are also working on memorial plans and a fund being set up to help the surviving victims and their families. on the church's website they talked about the camp as being the highlight of the year for this youth group.

the highlight has ended in tragedy and the teens' faith will be very much tested in the coming weeks and years. >> thank you. a research professor at the university of pittsburgh is accused of killing his wife by poisoning her with cyanide. he has an extradition hearing in west virginia. at least for today he's not expected to put up a fight. john burrman has the story. >> reporter: he's expected to waive extradition and be transported back to pennsylvania where he faces criminal homicide charges. his arrest in west virginia on thursday ending in nationwide man hunt. >> he was relatively quiet. he knew there were warrants for him. he said he was enroute back to pittsburgh.

>> he'll have his day in court and prove his innocence. >> reporter: he's accused of poisoning his wife with cyanide in april. dr. klien seen here in an interview was the chief of women's neurology at the university of pittsburgh medical center. investigators scoured the couple's home collecting evidence there and at the university lab where he worked. a three-month investigation led to this criminal complaint against the 64-year-old documenting an alleged text conversationing with his wife urging her to go on a creatiner regimen to help with fertility. >> the amazing amount of subpoena to determine it was a homicide, that's what took so long.

after decades of on again and off again talks there's now a glimmer of hope for the future of mideast peace talks. israeli palestinian representatives are getting ready to resume face-to-face talks. first time in three years. that's after they approved the

old friends trying to catch up on a lot of business that's been conducted. they will end up talking about syria and the middle east. back in march the president invited former president clinton and hillary clinton to dinner. this was a relationship that's grown over the years. when she was first made secretary of state they said how will this rival and to the surprise of her detractors she's been a very loyal secretary of state. i think this is a bit of a catch up lunch. >> if you look at the most recent polls, it shows by far she's the overwhelming favorite right now. 63%. these are democrats. they would like her to be the party's presidential nominee in 2016. joe biden gets 13% and andrew

cuomo down with 6%. the president is close to joe biden but there's a lot of people who assume. i wonder if you want to weigh in, if hillary runs, joe biden won't. >> i think that's the case. in talking to people who are close to the vice president, it seems while he really is toying with the possibility of a presidential run, i think that if hillary clinton runs, i don't think he would engage on that. she is such an overwhelming favorite. the democratic party would be behind her. the big question is what is he deciding what she wants to do. we really do not know the answer to that. sdp you saw the interview yesterday.

something he says is destroying the nation's overwell being. he's back to a major theme he used during the campaign. >> reporter: he's trying to reset the agenda. this theme worked for him during the campaign. the rich versus the poor. we're not paying enough attention to the middle class. the middle class doesn't feel like it's part of the economic success after this country. he's got, if you look at the polls, only a third of the people in this country believe it's headed on the right track economically. what he's doing, wolf, in this interview and the speeches is he's laying the ground work for that fight he'll have with republicans in the fall over raising the debt ceiling and the budget. he's putting them on notice saying no more austerity budg s budgets. we need to figure out way to grow this economy. >> certainly do. let's see what he can do.

have any value for human life the way this case has shown then behind bars is where he belongs. >> i can't see any scenario where i would go visit him. he's been lying to his family for the past 10, 11 years at ever possible turn. i have no trust in him. i can't see myself going to visit him and giving him the opportunity to face me and lie to me again. >> anthony castro says he didn't know what was going on inside that house in cleveland and finds it hard to believe that anyone would commit such horrible crimes much less his own father. in some cities getting your fast food may be a bit slow this week. fast food workers are walking off the job in several big cities across the country. they are demanding higher wams and want the right to join unions. they are protesting outside of mcdonald's and wendy's across new york city and parts of st.

louis. the rallies will hit detroit, milwaukee and michigan the rest of the week. currently the median wage for nearly 50,000 fast food workers in new york city is $9 an hour. that comes out to about 18,500 a year. that's below the poverty line for family of four. how much are the workers asking for? >> in an ideal world they would want about $15 an hour and they are more than willing to walk out of their shifts in the middle of the afternoon to get it. they are asking for double what they are paid for now which is roughly around $7.25. new york is one of the states where the minimum wage is equal to the federal minimum wage. i went to these protests a few hours ago. i saw about 50 workers telling me they really want these large fast food chains, mcdonald's,

burger king, wendy's to listen to what they have to say. one guy says he thinks the fast food changes view their workers as completely disposable. here is one of the signs that the workers held up. it's in spanish. it says strike for a larger wage in order to survive in new york city. that's really the bottom line. they feel as though they cannot survive on $7.25. especially when you consider that $11 is what you need to be above the poverty line and the living expenses in new york warrant a higher wage. listen to what they had to say. >> i have a second job and trying to catch up on bills. living in new york city is so expensive. you have to think about transportation, high taxes, food. everything is so expensive here. >> mcdonald's and burger king

says many of their restaurants are franchises so they don't have direct control of what employees are paid. >> the minimum wage, $7.25 hasn't been raised in a long time. one of the big issues for the obama white house is trying to raise the minimum wage. can the fast food workers live off of $7.25 or $9 an hour. let's discuss with dave jamison. the white house mentioned the low wage worker protest in a blog written last week. he says marking four years since the last increase americans across the country are making the case for why raising the minimum wage is good for workers and the economy. why are these protests bubbling up right now? do they really have a shot at

changing? >> i think they are bubbling up now because a lot of workers are fed up. these workers at the very bottom of the economic ladder, a lot of them have been going backwards since the reception ended. whatever raises they received are not enough to keep up with the cost of living. these workers are tired of it. they look around and see a company like mcdonald's which had net income of $1.4 billion last year. the ceo making 8 or $9 million and if you're a fry cook, you have to put yourself in that guy's shoes. she's probably looking around and sees the money executives are making and the profits the company is pulling in and he's wondering where his piece of the pie is. >> they're asking for $15 an hour going from $7.25 or $9 an hour. how realistic is that? >> $15, i think we'd be very surprised if we saw mcdonald's giving that significant of a

raise any time soon. the fact is that is closer to what you would need in order to really get by especially in a town like new york. the minimum wage and federal minimum wage which prevails in a place like new york city is still $7.25 there. i talked to a sasoon worker who said the last raises he received is all courtesy of minimum wage workers. we're already a few years behind and at a lower goal than the president was at a few years ago. i think the president is making a priority out of this and whether house gop will go along with it that's a different story. >> thanks very much for coming in. >> thank sthanks.

stretch the supply such as reusing diapers. the ramifications are diaper rash and urinary tract infections will be more common. when you see the costs you'll see why they are doing it. the cost of keeping them in diapers is $80 a month. two children is $160. there are no diaper stamps from the federal government. there's no specific aid to help these women. >> what are these moms supposed to do? >> these authors are affiliated with the national diaper bank. if you go to their website moms can see there's a state by state listing of places to help you out. >> what about instead of disposable, the clothe diapers. why not bring back cloth diapers? >> there's a couple of issues. there's larger investment to put forth up front. they might save you money in the

long run but up front you have to have the money. also a lot of day care centers won't take a child in cloth diapers. that's an issue and a lot of the moms don't have washers and dryers and many laundromats went let you clean cloth diapers. an unarmed black man is shot and killed and we're not talking about trayvon martin. this man's story is now a maef called fruitvale station. we'll hear what the director has to say about it. the new guy is loaded with protein!

focused in on the death of trayvon martin and george zimmerman in recent months. before that killing there was another one. an unarmed black man was shot and killed by a police officer. today the officer is free. it's now the subject of a ground breaking film. michelle turner reports. >> there's gunshots. >> reporter: two years before the trayvon martin shooting became nationwide news, the bay area erupted over case with disturbing parallels. oscar grant was young, african-american and unarmed. despite committing no crime he wound upshot to death by a figure of authority. in his case a bay area rapid

transit cop. grant's death at oakland fruitvale station was caught on cell phone camera. it faded from national headlines and might have stayed that way if not for 27-year-old oakland native ryan. he wrote and directed fruitvale station. a fictionalized look a grant's life. >> we just trying to get loam. >> reporter: he told me grant's killing hit him and oakland hard. >> it really shook us to our core. we haven't recovered from it. if this is capable of happening here, it's capable of happening anywhere. it still does. >> reporter: michael b. jordan see a connection between the deaths of grant and trayvon martin. >> i think it goes back to the

quick judgment. putting stereo types on people. >> these were young men who deserved life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness just like everybody else. they were human beings. >> reporter: part of the movie was filled at fruitvale station where grant was killed. he's neither all good nor all bad but a human being struggling to get his life together. >> the tragedy is this guy didn't come home to the people he loved life. he didn't get chance to figure his life out. >> reporter: a life like trayvon martin's cut short. michelle turner, cnn, new york. >> the police officer argued he thought he was shooting him with a taser as opposed to a real gun. that's why he served a year in prison. the film was shot in 20 days and

a memorial service is getting under way for the 79 people killed in the train crash in spain. two american women were among those who died. the driver of the train is now charged with 79 counts of homicide by professional recklessness. a court has granted the driver conditional release but his license to operate a train is suspended for six months. he also has to report to a court every week and he has surrendered his passport. police have restored order in huntington beach, california, after a brawl broke out in the streets. the violence erupted at the end of a secuurfing and skating eve. the fight moved into the downtown area. police arrested eight people and are looking for more suspect. they're asking the public for any video or pictures of the dispurr badi

disturban disturbance. there could have a major tragedy in northern arizona after heavy rain hit the region. 33 people were on board a tour bus from las vegas when it got caught in a downpour. the bus was pushed nearly 300 yards by floodwaters before it tipped over. watter was up to eight feet deep. the passengers and driver all made it to safety without any injuries. two deaths are blamed on the flash flooding in north carolina. the bodies of a man and child who were swept away by the floodwaters were found over the weekend. parts of the state's piedmont region got up to a foot of rain in just 12 hours. the flood swamped homes and businesses and knocked out roads and bridges. rescuers were called after dozens were trapped in their vehicles. in one county some roads might not be open again for three months. nasa says it has spotted a giant hole in the sun. chad myers is joining us to explain what's going on. chad, what is going on? >> well, it's a dark spot on the

sun. now i do not want you, anyone, please, to go out and look at the sun. this dot, spot, black area, is not there to the visible eye. it's not there to the visible spectrum. you have to have a special telescope looking at special wavelengths. what typically happens is the nag n magnetic field flies out of the sun and is recaptured here. this large black dot, coroanal hole, is an area where magnetism flows away from the sun and doesn't get captured back down. it was discovered about three or four weeks ago. a large black hole has rotated around the other side. another coronal hole is there. this is a cool spot on the sun, kind of cool to look at. go to spaceweather.com and see these all the time on the left side of the screen. coronal homes, some of this wind, some of this coronal wind, almost mass ejection comes at us, could approach the atmosphere of the earth in a couple of days. that could affect maybe some radio frequencies and things.
