>> inside man in there. >> that's my suspicion. >> i'm john berman. >> i'm michaela pereira. >> we begin with breaking news from florida where a plant that refills propane tanks has exploded near orlando. these pictures, filling the sky with a spectacular but terrifying site. what do we know about this? >> reporter: the video is dramatic. the loud blast sounded like there were bombs going off. started in a town 45 minutes northwest of orlando. initially more than a dozen employees were believed to be missing but authorities say thankfully they have all been accounted for. seven employees were taken to regional hospitals. we don't know the extent of their injuries. what we do know is that there were 53,000 cylinders of propane

at the plant. more than a million pounds in all. authorities braced for the worst and set up a half mile evacuation around the plant and began pouring water on the facility. the good news in all of this is that authorities say no one has died. >> that is great news, alina. any word about the cause. >> reporter: so far the cause of the explosions and fire is not immediately known presumably authorities will be working to find out exactly what caused this to happen. >> you said there were no deaths inside the plant. what about the people who live nearby? are there any homes? >> reporter: there are homes, a spokesperson for the lake county sheriff's office said there are 50 homes three-quarters of a mile away from the plant. the evacuation area set up is a half mile around the plant and more good news, no residents were hurt in the blast. >> those pictures we're looking

at and deep looking at, simply terrifying and with the amount of propane there. it's a near miracle there were no deaths there. all right, alina machado, thanks. big question in the nation's capital, who is defacing some of washington's most notable landmarks? one person is in custody but as pamela brown tells us investigators aren't sure she's the only culprit. >> reporter: cleaning crews spent monday scrubbing green paint off a wall inside two national cathedral chapels. a woman was arrested. a law enforcement source says the 58-year-old woman was found carrying a green paint can when she was arrested. >> i can confirm an arrest was made. the suspect who appears to have vandalized beth le them and children's chapel, the original vandalism was found in the lower level and closed that and later

in the afternoon additional paint had been found in children's chapel. >> reporter: it's still unknown if the suspect is linked to the vandalism of three other d.c. landmarks in recent days. on friday authorities discovered green paint splattered on the lincoln memorial. as crews continue to clean it up they found green paint on joseph hen henry. adding to the history, it was found on the statue of martin luther a day before the national cathedral incident. officials are still investigating whether the vandalism is linked or if these are copycat crimes. pamela brown, cnn, washington. >> also in washington, the senate has given its okay to the next fbi director, james comey was confirmed 93-1 with only sand rand paul voting against. he had a hold on the nomination as he asked for more information on the drone program.

he was a top lawyer in the justice department under george w. bush and takes over for robert mueller who has served in the post there the top fbi post for a dozen years. we could find out more as soon as today about the nsa surveillance program. the agency plans to declassify additional information about the programs and the top secret court that oversees anti-terror operations. not clear what will be unveiled or how much information the obama administration will make public. >> edward snowden's father is defending his son as the nsa leaker seeks temporary asylum in russia. he tells anderson cooper on "360" his son should not return unless he gets assurances he will get a fair trial and people are focusing too much on the leaks and not enough on the programs the leaks revealed. >> he's not living a comfortable life at this point.

and promote sustainable economic growth. a new wave of violence in iraq. security officials say at least 50 people were killed and more than a dozen car bombings monday. more than 100 people were injured. ten of the blasts in baghdad. mostly in shiite neighborhoods. other attacks have intensified in iraq since the start of ramadan earlier this month. authorities in switzerland trying to determine what caused two commuter trains to collide. the driver of one of the trains was killed and nearly three dozen passengers injured. five seriously. the trains were traveling on a route in western switzerland near lausanne. monday night a new round of marches by supporters of deposed president mohamed morsi sent them towards security headquarters in cairo and raised fears the country is closer to descending into chaos. a top diplomat met with the former president and ara damon

exactly how that is going to materialize given that the pro-morsi camp is so hardened in their position, in their demand that morsi be returned to power and that, of course, is a n nonstarter for those who do oppose him. a lot of people in the pro-morsi camp say they are willing to stand their ground there. they've already begun digging in, erecting even more barricades making medical preparations they say fully anticipating that the military, the security forces are going to try to go in and clear them out. and so a lot of other egyptians that we're talking to are saying they're incredibly naturally concerned about the direction that the country is heading and there was such optimism some two years ago after president, former president mubarak was removed from power and some of those jupg egyptians feel as though their revolution has been hijacked twice. first by the muslim brotherhood

back to florida with the latest on that propane plant explosion. this video shows the moments right after the blue rhino plant in tavares exploded. seven in the hospital with critical injuries. thankfully all others have been accounted for. scary moments in south philadelphia. want to show you what is left of three homes. look at that after a natural gas explosion tore them apart. eight people injured including two small children. and a contractor who had been working in one of the buildings. >> the whole house was down, i saw the house next to it, it was fallen over. i saw firemen hosing them down with the fire hose. >> he was running out of the house he had burn marks from head to toe and bleeding from the side and just asking for help. >> he is listed in critical condition with severe burns. gas has been shut off to the block as the investigation

continues. politician dive teams expected to resume their search of a lake in bristol, connecticut, the hometown of aaron hernandez searching for evidence and a possible murder weapon as prosecutors build their homicide case against hernandez. they allege that 23-year-old orchestrated the killing of ode din lloyd last month. hernandez has pleaded not guilty. he is being held without bail in massachusetts. michael jackson's ex-wife debbie rowe could take the witness stand in the wrongful death case against a concert promoter. she is expected to talk about his drug use. it was his addictions responsible for his death, they claim. jackson was good at sells tickets but not commercial endorsements that could have boosted his earnings. what killed a bride-to-be and a member of their wedding party. linda sthurt had severe head injuries and drowned. her best man-to-be mark lennon

into the hotel. he walked through doors that were normally locked doors that opened up out on to this very prominent promenade here in cannes. he walked into the leviev diamond exhibition and held the man at gunpoint then stuffed a bag full of diamonds and earrings and rings and pendants before leaving the hotel, we're told, through a separate door. a different door than the one that he entered before making his escape. now, experts that i talked to say that this kind of heist has all the hallmarks of someone who is very experienced, someone who knew what they were doing, michaela. >> i'm curious what it is like there today, erin. if it's business as usual at the hotel and in the area. are you seeing a big police presence still? >> reporter: well, that was one of the incredible things even

it sank the value of stock for shareholders like him. aig considered joining the lawsuit but backed out after public backlash. and big story yesterday, the fast food workers in cities across the country walking off the job. they say minimum wage of $7.25 an hour not livable asking for 15 bucks an hour. >> i have a second job and try to catch up on bills and this is -- living in new york city is so expensive you have to think about transportation, high taxes, food, everything is just so expensive here. >> so, of course, it's, you know, expensive in new york city but this is happening across the country and heard that a lot across the country, st. louis and elsewhere. pictures from st. louis, taking two jobs to get by. we asked mcdonald's and burger king about their wages and they said it's a great start in the workforce with many opportunities to move up. this isn't a start for them. this is their reality.

weiner falling fast, new york mayoral candidate caught in the second sexting scandal of his career plummeting in the polls but will anthony weiner drop out of the race? >> remnants of flossie flooding the streets knocking out power we are tracking this storm. welcome back to "early start." i'm michaela pereira. >> i'm john berman. great to see you. 31 minutes after the hour. to our top story now. the flames lighting up the sky near orlando. look at that after a propane tank filling plant exploded. residents say it went on for minutes shaking their homes. at least seven people have been injured. it happened in tavares, florida. john is there and joins us on the phone. bring us up to date. >> reporter: well, michaela, the latest news seems this point the fire is out. the fire crews have been working for the last four hours and continually dumping water on to the plant and the area around it

trying to put out the fire. like missiles exploding into the air. the area originally was evacuated with a one-mile perimeter. everyone was removed from the area but within the last hour, the roads have been open the except for the road directly in front of the plant. as you can see from the video at the time of the explosions, the fact that it did not happen at a main facility itself but off site of the main building, thank god that saved more than two dozen people who were at the plant working that night. seven were injured. we don't know their exact conditions at this point, but at least we can say the majority of the people got out, you know, unharmed. >> such a concern when you think about how many people work there and their lives could have been at risk. any idea on the cause at this point and are there still concerns about any remaining safety issues in the area? >> reporter: well, there's

certainly keeping us and the rest of the area -- the residents around it but for most part down the street where the plant is located is mostly residential -- is mostly a commercial area so i think the residents at least in this immediate area should be safe but there are plenty of firefighters on scene standing by in case there is a flare-up but they certainly have dumped a large amount of water on top of the area that was originally on fire. >> and they still have no idea what caused this. >> reporter: no, not yet. now that the investigation will begin, sheriffs are here and the fire department is on scene and we'll have to wait to see if federal authorities come out to investigate also to see what exactly caused the fire and the multiple explosions. >> a terrifying event there in tavares. as you said, it's almost really a miracle more people weren't injured or even killed. all right, thanks for the very latest.

that's john couwels on the phone. >> now to the developing weather situation overnight. what was tropical storm flossie has been battering hawaii with rain, wind and lightning and may take some time before the islands are in the clear. indra petersons is tracking it for us. >> downgraded to a depression and in the next 36 hours it will become a remnant low. 35 miles per hour in winds. weakened significantly before coming onshore. about the next 72 hours we expect it to be a remnant low. notice the track here. definitely kind of moving in that west-northwesterly direction. the other thing unbelievable last night if you were around central kansas and missouri look at the heavy rain, 6.97 inches. it's very slow-moving system drenching the area with heavy rain and continues to move to the east looking for another two to four inches in the mississippi valley. a lot of things going on.
