powerful explosions rattling windows 15 miles away. sending huge plumes of fire shooting into the sky. the explosions began just before 11:00 last night and in a blue rhino facility near orlando. alina machado is following the story. >> reporter: there were 53,000 propane cylinders in the plant when the fire broke out. a witness says the explosion sounded like bombs were going off. >> did you see that? >> reporter: one after another, explosions so big and loud, they could be seen and heard and felt for miles. the raging inferno lighting up the night sky just after 11:00 over the blue rhino propane plant in take var recent, florida, northwest of orlando. the danger so great, officials forced to evacuate resident as mile away. >> they are just shooting off like missiles. >> reporter: this video captures what looks like propane tanks shooting up into the sky.

fires burning out of control just feet away from three large propane tanks. dozens of emergency responders racing to the scene to treat the injured, while firefighters fought to put down the flames. plant officials have accounted for the two dozen employees works at the time. at least seven were taken to area hospitals. miraculously, no one died. >> there were propane cylinders stored in various parts of the property. 53,000 20-pound cylinders. >> reporter: this happened on the heels of the fertilizer plant that rocked west, texas. 15 people died, most of them first responders. the devastation there spanned a five block radius. the cause of that deadly blast is still under investigation. the investigation in florida is just beginning. no word yet on a possible cause. we should get a better sense of

the devastation with daylight. blue rhino is a company that supplies those small propane tanks used for backyard barbecues. >> thanks for the update. there was a similar frightening scene we want to tell you about this morning, a gas explosion destroyed three philadelphia row houses. the explosion september at least eight people to area hospitals monday including one man who is now in critical condition with severe burns. fire investigators say the contractor working in a vacant home was having trouble with a hot water heater just moments before the explosion. >> that is terrible. luckily nobody seriously injured there, in fatalities. all right. well, the segue here almost writes itself. from a massive explosion to a massive implosion. new york mayoral candidate anthony weiner says he's still in to win it, but his polls say not so much. now several powerful politicians are having their say about his most admission of inappropriate conduct with women online. you know you are in trouble when

[ speaking mandarin ] >> reporter: making it clear he's fighting for every vote he can get. now, weiner has also been sending his supporters e-mails asking if their vote and of course for their money. because as we all know, campaigns are very expensive. now, i of course asked him about huma yesterday and he only said she's doing great and then moved on on to answering other questions. >> he would love to move on on, that's for sure. >> absolutely. put it in the background. voters are starting to come out for him. but when eliot spitzer enters in, it creates energy around this and keeps on going. the good news is there is actually a real race there. and later this morning, kate will talk with weiner's opponent, christine quinn. she's in the lead and she'll be here at about 8:05 eastern time. >> definitely talking about those latest polls for one thing. lots to talk about there. now to the nation's capital. someone is vandalizing great american landmarks in washington, d.c..

the national cathedral, that beautiful, beautiful building, is the latest location to be targeted with green paint. and now police have made an arrest. pamela brown's in the nation's capital live from the national cathedral. so what are you hearing, pamela? >> reporter: well, it's really a bizarre series of vandalism here. the national cathedral right behind me here is the fourth d.c. landmark to be targeted just in the past few days. now, there is one person who was taken into custody yesterday in connection with only on one of the crimes. so this is still very much a mystery here. investigators are looking into whether this vandalism is perhaps connected or if these are copy cat crimes. authorities do tell us, though, that at this point there is no reason to believe that 58-year-old woman taken into custody is responsible for all the vandalism. >> reporter: cleaning crews spent monday night scrubbing green paint inside two national

chapels. police charged a woman with defacing property. a law enforcement source says the 58-year-old woman was found carrying a green paint can when she was arrested. >> i can confirm late this afternoon an arrest was made, suspect who appears to have vandalized both bethlehem and children's chapel here. the original vandalism was found this bethlehem chapel on the lower level, so we closed the lower level and then later in the afternoon, additional paint had been found in children's chapel. >> reporter: it's still unknown if the suspect is linked to the vandal echl ism of three other marks. on friday, authorities discovered green paint splattered on the lincoln memorial. as crews continue to clean up the landmark, authorities discovered what looks like green painted symbols on the statue of joseph henry. adding to the mystery, green paint was discovered on a statue of martin luther at a d.c. church a day before the national

cathedral incident. officials are still investigating whether the vandalism is linked or if these are copy cat crimes. and park police are using video at the lincoln memorial to help with the investigation there. but so far officials are not telling us what exactly is in that video. and again, authorities are not yet linking this vandalism with the similar m.o. with the green paint and so a lot of unanswered questions about why this is happening. still park police saying that they are stepping up patrols at landmarks here. thank you very much. you heard about this one, a new mystery stomach illness. doctors are baffled. at least 350 people reported infections in 14 states. dr. sanjay gupta is in atlanta with what we need to know about this outbreak. good morning. >> good morning. >> this is like real, it's spreading. at first we thought it was discreet, and now it's going

through more states. what do we know? >> and it's been going on since mid june, as well. so people hearing about this maybe now for the first time. but it's been out there for some time. and it's been a little bit slow in terms of figuring this out. having covered a lot of these types of outbreaks, usually you have a better handle on this. but right now they don't have a clear idea what is causing this. you put up that map there, three of those states have the most cases. iowa, nebraska, texas. but there is about 353 people who have been sickened. probably more people that have symptoms but haven't gone to their doctor. and then you have some who have been hospitalized. no one has died yet, but this is of significant concern. a bit of a whodunit. these are how the medical investigations often work and it's not really morning show kind of stuff to describe, but the symptoms are pretty awful. there is a treatment for this. so if people have symptoms and they're worried about it, they can go to their doctor and get a very effective treatment.

but right now, the key is to identify them. by the way, we have a picture of what the pesky little thing is, a parasite that's causing this. cyclospora. might be the first time you've heard that term. there have been food outbreaks in the past, but that's what's causing the problem there. >> what am i looking at when i look at those slides? is that what it turns into or is it different forms of the same bug? should i even care? >> you're looking at a very microscopic image. and, no, you won't see that. doctors even have a hard time identifying that. but it's a cyclospora. not a bacteria, not a virus, this is a parasite, but it still responds pretty well meaning antibiotics still deal with it pretty effectively. so the antibiotic bactrim, that tends to be a very effective treatment for this. >> so the obvious question is, what can you do to help yourself in this situation. can you protect yourself at all? >> there are two avenues. first of all, you have the public health officials that

still need to figure this out. at some point the thinking seems to be that the vegetable that likely caused this is probably off the shelves by now. just because of the half life. so that may be good news and you may be seeing a down turn in cases because of that. but you have to wash your fruit and vegetables very, very carefully. and that sounds obvious. after even washing them, making sure you try them very carefully. because sometimes residue can stick. and then making sure you don't cross contaminate. a lot of people do that already and think that's basic sort of knowledge. but there's probably a significant percentage of the population that forgets that. and that can be effective in terms of wiping away the parasite. >> and also people may dismiss it as just another virus going around, so at least now they will have heightened awareness so they can get the right treatment. sanjay, thank you so much as always. let's talk about the weather now. paradise is getting pounded this morning. even though flossie has been

downgraded to a tropical depression, hawaii could see up to 10 inches of rain by the time the system moves out. indra peterson is tracking the latest. 10 inches is a lot. >> that is a lot of rain and it has to do with where the mountains are, whether where the strong winds are. we're still waiting for the latest reports. it was downgraded, so now 35-mile-per-hour steady winds. the next 36 hours, expected to be downgraded again to a remnant low. behind that, it should disintegrate completely. but you can still tell they're looking for heavy rains. mipd th behind that, notice what happened in kansas. record breaking rain. very slow moving system brought about 7 inches of rain. the same system still making its way to the mississippi valley, so looking for another 2 to # inches today. dakotas, the threat for severe weather. look at this area of high pressure.

the evacuation order has been lifted. we'll keep an eye on that situation there. a 58-year-old woman has been charged with defacing the national cathedral with green paint. it was splattered on an organ inside the historic bethlehem chapel and in the children's chapel. investigators say it wasn't clear if the green paint there and on the statue out side the smithsonian castle are related to the vandalism at the lincoln memorial and are now investigating. police dive teams will resume searching a lake in connection with the aaron hernandez murder investigation. the former nfl star is from bristol and the lake is about a mile from his uncle's home which police have searched several times since her nnandez was charged. archaeologists trying to unravel the mystery of a coffin within a coffin. after finding the long lost remains of king richard iii beneath a parking lot, they have now discovered a sealed lead

coffin encased in a larger stone coffin. it's being moved to a local university where experts will determine the safest way to open it. and finally, some amazing surveillance video. definitely picked the wrong restaurant to try to pick up. came in with a mask and gun and these two brothers who run their father's wing zone said, oh, no and wrestled the weapon away from him and shoved him right out the door. but it gets even better. at the end, watch this. they're so happy, they do this awkward chest bump hug thing to celebrate. turns out they have had several robberies at this area and the employees of this restaurant are saying, no, we're not doing this any moor. so they have been taking -- this is just the latest incident apparently. >> as brother, you'd think they would have the chest bump hug thing down a little better. >> what you don't know at home is how these two he said the show every day. >> yes, we did that once. kate would fly like 25 feet and hit something hard and my job would be gone. but i have to say, as enjoyable

say the work of an expert. now new details in to the heist that could be one of the biggest gem robberies ever. it's now thought to be possibly the largest gem theft in recent history. the estimated amount of stolen jewelry from the carlton hotel in cannes, france thousand believed to be worth close to $136 million. while police scour through countless hours of surveillance video, we're learning more about how one gunman managed to pull off such a huge heist. according to the deputy prosecutor for organized crime, the suspect entered the exhibition in the hotel around 11:30 a.m. sunday. entering through normally secure doors that opened on to cannes's famed promenade. >> this person knew exactly how they were going this. there was a locked french door that this person was somehow able to open. >> reporter: armed with a semiautomatic pistol, the suspect, his face covered with a hat and scarf, held up the

manager of the sale exhibit and other vendors in the presence of unarmed private guards without firing a single shot. authorities say he then escaped with a bag containing rings, earrings and pendants. he exited by another door on the inside. officials describe the sequence of events as very fast. >> police are very intrigued as to whether it's an inside job. they knew exactly what they were doing and they planned this with military precision. >> reporter: business as usual here at the carlton hotel. a walk through the lobby, you would never know this was the scene of a $136 million jewelry heist. there are still jewelries on display, diamonds and sapphires and fine furs for sale and pretty low security. as for that diamond exhibition, they were dismantling that this morning. >> fear in the air there. erin, thank you very much. so how could this have been

felt for miles. the raging inferno lighting up the night sky just after 11:00 over the blue rhino propane plant in tavares, florida, northwest of orlando. the danger so great, officials forced to evacuate resident as mile away. >> they are just shooting off like missiles. >> reporter: look like propane tanks shooting up into the sky. fires burning out of control just feet away from three large propane tanks. dozens of emergency responders racing to the scene to treat the injured while firefighters fought to put down the flames. plant officials have accounted for the two dozen employees working at the time. at least seven were taken to area hospitals. miraculously, no one died. >> there were propane cylinder s stored in various parts of the property. 53,000 20-pound cylinders. >> reporter: it happened on the heels of a deadly explosion at a

fertilizer plant that rocked the small town of west, texas. 15 people died, most of them first responders. the devastation there spanned a five block radius. the cause of that deadly blast is still under investigation. the investigation in florida is just beginning. no word yet on a possible cause, but the fire chief just held a news conference moments ago and he says that he does not think that this was an agent of sabotage. he says this was probably equipment failure with a combination of human error, possibly of course these are things they will be looking in to. >> thank you very much for the report. good mention of wednesday, texas. everybody out there the families in west still need your help. there is also another explosion to tell you about, this one was up in philadelphia. a gas leak again, this natural gas leveling three row houses. at least eight people are in the hospital. one man in critical condition with severe burns. investigators say a contractor working on a hot water heater

but like i mentioned, enjoy that. nothing lasts very long around here. i'm getting used to this. >> keeping you you on your toes. >> seriously. to washington, d.c. now where police have arrested a woman for allegedly splattering green paint all over the national -- inside the national cathedral. the arrest of the 5-year-o8-yea suspect comes after several similar incidents including one at the lincoln memorial. pamela brown is live in washington outside the national cathedral where the latest incident happened. what's the latest, pamela? >> reporter: we can tell you that this one person was taken into custody, a 58-year-old woman in connection with only one of the crimes. so this bizarre vandal even at d.c. landmarks remains very much a mystery at this hour. we have just learned from a d.c. law enforcement source that the clothes from the 58-year-old woman have been september aeeen forensics it see if the paint

matches the other paint at the other landmarks. they are trying to figure out whether the vandalism is linked or whether they are copy cat crimes and of course trying to figure out why this is happening. cleaning crews spent monday night scrubbing green paint off an organ and wall inside two national cathedral chapels. >> at least did seem to be minimal cosmetic damage that can be cleaned up fairly easily. >> reporter: police arrested the 58-year-old and charged her with defacing property. law enforcement source says she was found carrying a green paint can when she was arrested. >> the original vandalism was found will in bethlehem chapter on the lower level and so we closed that and then later in the afternoon additional paint had been found in children's chapel. >> reporter: it's still unknown if the suspect is linked to the vandalism of three other d.c. landmarks in recent days. on friday, authorities

discovered green paint splattered on the lincoln memorial. as crews continued to clean up the historic landmark, authorities discovered what looks like green painted symbols on the statue of joseph henry. adding to the mystery, green paint was discovered on a statue of martin luther at a d.c. church. officials are still investigating whether the vandalism is linked or if these are copy cat crimes. and according to the police report, cnn obtained, we have learned that when police found the woman here yesterday at national cathedral, there were several cans of green paint within three bags she had on her. but again, at this point authorities are not saying whether the vandalism is linked. in fact they said at this point they have no indication that the woman is responsible for the other vandalism here in the city. so of course will investigation is ongoing. >> pamela, certainly seems like there is more story to tell

jewels. that is a lot more than anyone thought. erin mclaughlin is live in cannes. the update, please. >> reporter: well, some new details from prosecutors into that brazen heist. it was 11:30 in the morning on sunday when a man, lhis face cloaked in a scarf, head in a cap, he walked in a set of doors that were normally locked. he then brand ished his weapon and threatened to shoot both the exhibitors as well as some of the passerbys before loading a bag full of jewels. we're talking rings and diamonds and pendants before leaving through a separate doorway. experts i talked to tell me this has all the hallmarks of an expert jewel thief, someone who knew what they were doing. a well coordinated, well planned

heist, chris. >> thanks so much. i want to talk more about this because it's very interesting story. to explain more about how a heist like this is even possible, how do you ypull it of at such a high value, former jewel thief, larry lawton, is here to help us out. larry, thanks so much for coming in. obviously we need to learn more details about what all happened. but when you look at the details we have now, broad daylight, busy hotel in cannes, really only disguised with a hat and scarf, and he made off with $136 million in jewelry. what does that tell you? >> well, it was definitely a professional heist. it was almost what i did. i actually planned a heist just exactly like this one in a big hotel in miami. and that's the way to do it. it was definitely a professional al heist. i've been saying that from day one. the amount to me is probably retail, but it's a lot of money.

they're having a party right now. but it was a definite professional heist. >> is this someone that would act alone or is this -- there are some rumors or some speculation that this is linked to an international jewelry thief kind of network known as the pink panthers. do you think that's possible? >> absolutely. definitely not a lone man. it was too coordinated. they knew exactly where to go. i think they had an inside guy, too, whether it's a guard or whether it's a hotel employee. that's where i'm leaning towards because the hotel robberies in cannes has been going on now since february, some major ones. >> so this person, this group made off with a whole lot of cruelr jewelry. what are investigators trying to do to track down the jewels? >> first thing i thought is they took the jewels before they were out in the case. they knew exactly where they were. so i'm sure they will be looking at all the was casing the place.

i predict they will find a car within a few days and that will be the first getaway car. and i'm really surprised they didn't have an electronic device on the jewels coming out where if the jewels went away from a certain area, you would get shocked by carrying it. so pretty shocked -- definitely all the earmarks of the pros. >> and there were security guards, but they were unarmed. do you think this points to inadequate security at the hotel when they had such a high value of jewelry on display? >> i wouldn't say that. the guards never bothered me and i robbed 15 to $18 million. and i plain it in gangster redemption. but, actually, no, they knew where they were. they corralled them quickly. within five minutes, they had it all done. i wouldn't blame it on the security. >> but real quick, what do the thieves -- what does the thief or multiple thieves do now?

the president has ban gone ale whole lot. hillary is transitioning into the nonprofit world where she's taking a leadership role with her husband and their foundation. but i also think it's really telling. optics matter. the president is relaxed. clearly these are into friends getting together and what a change from five long years ago when if the two of them had had a private lunch, it would be just the two of them and their food tasters. i think part of what they're trying to convey is the unity of the democratic party while there is a public and sometimes personal fight in the republican party between more moderate northeasterners like peter king or chris christie the governor of new jersey versus ted cruz or rand paul. there is a terrible fight in the republican party going on and here for once it's the democrats who are united. >> but ana, maybe that's okay with the president. but with the vice president, you're looking at your main rival right in the face. what keechbd conversation is that? >> i'm willing to bet you some

money that vice president biden would have liked to be in yesterday's lunch on that. right now in the white house and washington, there is biden see, biden did. he is like the holy spirit. he is at all places all time with all people. and so i'm sure that when vice president biden saw that she was meeting with president obama and he was not invited, because of course getting him to be quiet at one of these things is like trying to take a 5-year-old to sit still through dinner of adults. he said, well, how about breakfast with me the next day. so i think that's what that will be about today. >> an add on. just do it because water doing it in way? >> we're friends, too. sme she's friends with president obama, but she's friends with me, too. which is true. >> much less complicated history. he was in that race, too, but there was the never direct attacks between joe and hillary like there were between about a r

barack and hillary. >> but they have a much more complicated future. gives us more to talk about down the road. palm, how real do you think it is that the clintons are upset about what's going on with anthony weiner? >> i can't speak for them, i have not been in touch with them. but we all talk. this is personal, not political. they're not worried three years from now the fact that her aide's husband sent dirty pictures. that's nonsense. we love huma and she's going through pain. and this thing she's going through, this scandal, she has done nothing wrong. and so all of us who love and care for huma of course we're upset to see what she's going through. but that's all that this is. there is no political angle to that. >> what do you have, ana? >> i think the equivalent of all the pictures and images of hillary with bill when he had

his indiscretions and now huma, i think that's nonsense. i agree with paul. we all know what bill clinton did. they got over it. it's fine. the problem is that now huma has become a household name and there is a lot more scrutiny on her. and there is a very funky and a odd structure that she had where she was making six figures at the state department and at the same time making six figures from a company that has ties to clinton world. >> in her defense, it was all approved by the ethics office in the state department. i just want to defend huma on that. >> i got you. we've seen the reports. ana, beautiful haircut. great to have you both here on "new day". coming up next, a university

welcome back to "new day". all this little girl did was go for a swim at a water park and now the 12-year-old is in critical condition battling for her life. in the water with her, a rare but deadly brain eating amoeba. elizabeth company hehen joins u more. going swimming in a pool is common as you get. and we expect there may be some bugs in there, but something like this? how did this happen? >> i'm glad to say that this is incredibly unusual. as you said, so many people swim. this hardly ever happens. but when it does, it is just

horrifying. an amoeba basically goes through the water up your nose and into your brain. a 12-year-old girl went for a swim and is now fighting for her life. she was at that park in little rock, arkansas and came down with a rare infection caused by a brain eating amoeba. this infection has struck only 31 other people in the past ten years. and the centers for disease control says all were fatal. >> the child has a grave prognosis. >> reporter: the amoeba loves warm water like lakes, rivers and hot springs. >> it finds itself way back in our noses and then can work its way into our central nervous system around our brains and once it's there, it just causes destruction. >> reporter: her mother noticed

been married 58? >> attended 70. she stopped counting at 74. >> quite a story. >> all right. first, some of the top news. breaking news we're following from central florida this morning. eight people hospitalized this morning after a series of huge propane gas explosions at the blue rhino plant in florida. the flames lighting up the night skies, as you see there. this is a live look this morning at the plant. live at the scene. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, kate. the scene here today is nothing like the dramatic scene we saw more or less around 11:00 p.m. last night. the fire has been put out, but we still see the smoke and we still smell the smoke. it's still going on, and there's still some firefighters in the scene. we know that eight people were injured. some of them were transported by helicopter to local hospitals, and we don't know the extent of their injuries.

we also know that about 20 ems workers responded to the scene. 60 firefighters, none of them injured. this we know, kate, through a presser that richard keith, the fire chief, just gave. let's take a look at what happened after the first explosions took place last night. >> did you see that? >> reporter: one after another, after another. explosions so big and so loud, they could be seen and heard and felt for miles. the raging inferno lighting up the night sky just after 11:00 p.m. over the blue rhino propane tank in florida, northwest of orlando. the danger so great, officials forced to evacuate residents a mile away. >> they are just shooting off lake missiles right now. >> reporter: this video captures what looks like propane tanks shooting up into the sky, fires burning out of control just feet away from three large propane tanks.

dozens of emergency responders racing to the scene to treat the injured, while firefighters fought to put down the flames. >> jesus. >> reporter: plant officials have accounted for the two dozen employees working at the time. at least seven were taken to area hospitals. miraculously, no fatalities. >> there were propane cylinders stored in various parts of the property. 53,000 20-pound cylinders. >> reporter: this plant explosion on the heels of a deadly one at a fertilizer plant just three months ago, and that rocked the small town of west, texas. 15 people died, most of them first responders. the devastation there spanned a five-block radius. the cost of that deadly blast is still under investigation. the investigation here in florida, just beginning. chris, kate, and also we know from this presser that we just heard that the cause, they don't

think it was sabotage, they are thinking possibly, possibly equipment failure or human error. but then again, we're waiting for more conclusive investigation, back to you. >> thank you very much. now from florida to washington where this morning middle east peace talks get under way. last night, secretary kerry hosted a meal between israeli diplomats, the first time they've held face-to-face meetings in years. brianna is live from the white house, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. last night was the kickoff here in washington of this process. really, though, starting to lay the groundwork for how negotiations are going to proceed from here. not at this point as of yet tackling the really big issues. for instance, what to do with refugees, should israel stop settlements in contested areas like the west bank, and also the borders, what's the starting point in negotiations that both sides will have to agree on? this is a process expected to

take several months, nine months as is the opening concession by israel. the release of palestinian prisoners, more than 100 of them, some have been in jail for decades, convicted of killing israelis. it's sort of something that struck me there, chris, yesterday i just happened to be walking the mall and i heard a motorcade coming by. it was the palestinian delegation, and i was looking at it and thought this is either the beginning of something that is very historic or this is the beginning of what is going to be another disappointment. it's sort of a time here as this is kicking off where there's some hope, but also some skepticism about what can be accomplished. >> hopefully, everybody's going into it with optimism. appreciate the reporting, brianna. all right, anthony weiner's poll numbers, falling fast. the latest blow, he won't be getting former new york governor elliot spitzer's vote. we're going to talk to anthony weiner's opponent christine

quinn in a moment, but first to rosa flores who's been covering this for us. >> you know the saying there's no such thing as bad publicity? may not apply in this position, because despite his efforts to talk about the issues important to the middle class, like jobs, his message is being drowned out by questions about his online sexting spree. >> as a candidate, you should have moral values, and right now, i think that his moral values are shot. >> reporter: harsh words and even a harsher reality for embattled mayoral candidate anthony weiner. his poll numbers plummeting from first to fourth in a new poll, the survey conducted after a new round of lewd chats revealed. take a look, the former congressman's support dropping ten percentage points in just five days, from 26% to 16%. >> i'm going to leave this to the city of new york to decide,

period, end of conversation. >> reporter: his vow to stay in the race, angering the clintons. a source tells cnn they are livid with weiner personally because they care about huma. adding salt to the wound, democratic candidate elliot spitzer trying to resurrect his own career after his own scandal is not going to vote for weiner. >> you don't think he should be mayor of new york? >> that's fair, correct. >> i'm interested in what other politicians say, but not that much. >> reporter: despite all, he continues campaigning across the city and finding supporters at every stop, wooing voters in queens with a little mandarin. making it clear he's fighting for every vote he can get. and he'll be looking for those votes starting in about an hour and continuing late into the evening. we'll see if his strategy

outpaces a scandal that is already gone viral. kate? >> rosa, thanks so much. with just 42 days to go until the democratic primary in new york's mayoral race, it's doubtful anthony weiner can make the runoff. well, the front-runner in the race is christine quinn and she's joining me now this morning. good morning, thanks so much for coming in. >> thank you. >> of course. i've looked back at some of the statements you've said recently, called anthony weiner reckless, irresponsible, but you have stopped short of calling for him to drop out of the race. at this point, why? >> well, look, i think it's a little cheeky, quite frankly, for opponents to tell each other to get in and out of races. this is now a decision for the voters. the voters are going to make a decision come september 10th. now that said, i'm really confident that they are going to elect me the next mayor of the city of new york because the voters care about their future,

not the past mistakes of others. what they care about is they are going to be housing for their children when they graduate from school, will there be good jobs for them and their children that get them into and keep them in the middle class, will their neighborhood school get better, will there be more topnotch high schools for their children to apply to, and will our can streets stay safe. those are the issues that i have a record on, i put out a plan yesterday to put out 40,000 new middle income housing, that builds on top of work i've done protecting new york's renters. that's because of a law we passed in the counsel. that's real results and that's what new yorkers care about is results. >> you're absolutely right, the people care about their futures, not necessarily the past, but if you also look at the poll numbers most recently, once the scandal broke about anthony

weiner, his poll numbers dropped and they've dropped even further. can you see you're benefitting from the scandal? >> i think, of course, the scandal had an impact in voters' minds, because they know for the future to be the best possible, you need a mayor that has a level of maturity and responsibility and you see that in me. when new yorkers look at my record over the past eight years as speaker, eight budgets balanced on time. when there was a threat of 4,100 teachers laid off, i didn't just have press conferences and say this can't happen, i stopped it by bringing the teacher's union and the department of education into a room. >> when you think big-name new yorkers, like the former governor, that he says he's not going to vote for anthony weiner, does that help or hurt? what's going on? >> i think whatever elliot spitzer says is not so relevant to the mayor's race, at all. the voices that matter are the

new yorkers that are going to vote, and trust me, every day out there they are asking me what i can do to make their lives better. then because they are new yorkers, yeah, yeah, that's a promise. now tell me what you did. then when i tell them my record, you can tell they get confident that we can make this city a better place. look, at the end of the day you hear a lot of talk on the campaign trail. new yorkers are smart. they know talk is cheap, but when you look at the records, in my time as speaker, during the recession, we added high-tech and manufacturing jobs in the city. most cities were hemorrhaging those jobs. that's what we need to do more of, build good jobs like that to give people opportunities to get into the middle class, and that's notwithstanding the media circus that some have brought elliot and anthony to these races, that, at the end of the day when you're talking to voters on the street, they cut to those issues because that's what they care about. >> and there's no question that a local race is about local

issues. that goes far beyond new york city, but also this race is now gotten national attention because of what's been going on with anthony weiner. makes me wonder -- >> to some degree. this is new york city and everybody cares about new york city, because we're the greatest city in the world, and when we pass laws like the antismoking ban that i sponsored in the counsel, you don't just see other states replicating it, you see other countries in the world replicating it, so we matter because we're new york. >> let me ask you this, and i wonder this as a woman, myself, you're the only woman in this mayoral race. do you think that if a woman had been caught up in a similar scandal, that she would be given a second or third chance at this point? >> you know, there's been a lot of discussion about second chances in this race from former congressman weiner and the former governor. look, for me the question is, let's give us the first chance. when i'm elected mayor, i'll be the first woman and openly gay mayor of the city of new york.

let's not have a conversation about second chances, let's talk about first chances and history and what that could mean for the greatest city in the world, and to me that's exciting. i don't wake up every day and say i'm running to be the first woman mayor, but then you're out there, at a subway, a mom brings a little girl up to me and bends down and says, sweetie, this is the woman i told you might be mayor, and you see something click in that little girl's mind and that's exciting and it's energizing, because what this city should be is a place where everybody, regardless of their gender, sexual orientation, their race, their religion, can have their wildest dreams come true. that's what it was for my grandparents when they came here from ireland and that's what i'm going to make sure it remains for all of those children. >> you brought it up and it made me just wonder just now. it's been a big headline today, as you said, you're the first openly gay speaker of the city council, first openly gay mayor of new york, also a catholic.

what did you make when you heard the comments pope francis made about homosexuality that he says, who am i to be the judge? >> i thought they were terrific. i think the pope deserves so much credit for making those statements. they were enormously positive statements from any significant religious leader, but from the pope himself to make a statement like that, it is enormous progress. now look, there's more we want, changes we want in the catholic church, let me be clear, it's not everything, but that is a step forward and i very much thank the pope for what he's said and also thank him for his focus on the poor and focus on getting the papacy out there more to touch people and more down on the level of everyday catholics across the world. >> speaker quinn, great to meet you, thank you for coming in this morning. we'll be watching closely, the primary is in september. >> september 10th, put it in your book. >> already there, i promise you. nice to meet you. >> nice to meet you. >> chris? we want to bring you the

housewives of new jersey," a reality series that's famous for bringing the drama. a u.s. district court has indicted teresa and her husband joe on 39 counts of fraud and tax charges. the two are accused of exaggerating their income while applying for loans before housewives debuted in 2009, then hiding their fortunes in a bankruptcy filing after the first season aired. the federal indictment alleges they lied to the bankruptcy court, to the irs, and a number of banks. the pair faces pretty stiff penalties, up to 30 years in prison and a million dollar fine if convicted. joe was also charged with failure to file tax returns between 2004 and 2008, a time when he earned nearly $1 million, adding to an already checkered legal past. >> we've been hearing rumblings of in the news for years now and it's all come to a head with the

latest charges. >> reporter: joe's lawyer did not immediately respond, however, teresa's lawyer said she will plead not guilty, releasing a statement saying she supports her husband and adding, quote, i am committed to my family and intend to maintain our lives in the best way possible, which includes continuing my career. as a result, i am hopeful that we will resolve this matter with the government as quickly as possible. with the real housewives of new jersey in its fifth season on bravo, teresa's future with the show is potentially in jeopardy. >> you can't really shoot the level of glamour behind bars. >> now, of course, we reached out to bravo, they had no comment. joe and teresa are scheduled to make their initial court appearance at 10:00 a.m. this morning eastern time in federal court in new jersey. keep in mind also, joe has yet another case pending that he fraudulently obtained a driver's

of the mysterious stomach bug in 15 states. and a new recommendation on how frequently to screen lung cancer in long-term smokers. first up, great to have you, always a pleasure to see you on "new day," you know that, my brother. what do we need to know about the stomach bug that's spreading more quickly than we thought? >> first of all, give it a name, cyclosporiasis is the name. it's not a bacteria, it's not a virus, this is a parasite. as you mentioned, 353 people have been sickened. that's it, by the way, the pesky bugger causes the type of symptoms we don't talk about much on morning television, but the g.i. sort of stuff. usually a miserable day for people, but there have been 21 people hospitalized, as well. >> where's it coming from? >> they don't know yet. that's a little bit surprising, because we're talking about now since mid-june this has been going on. it's hard to figure this stuff out, basically asking people what they ate in the last few

days, few weeks. i don't know about you, chris, but you probably don't know what you had yesterday. they think it's vegetables. they think it does not spread from person to person, so people in households need not worry about that part and the best advice is really wash your vegetables and fruit well. wash it, dry it, if you can peel the skin out, even better. >> be aware, if you're sensing these symptoms, seem worse than a virus, go to your doctor, because there is treatment. go ahead, doc. >> very easy treatment, good point, it's an antibiotic that seems to be very effective. >> all right. i had four whole chickens for breakfast yesterday, doc, if you want to know. let's turn the corner -- >> i believe it looking at you, chris. >> for the first time a government advisory group is recommending that some people should be screened for lung cancer. tell us, what is this new information, who and why? >> this is a big deal.

you talk about screenings, you can add the c.t. scan for high-risk smokers now, people they consider high risk for lung cancer. it's very interesting, this is a departure in terms of screenings, but they say lung cancer is the biggest cancer killer out there. they've been looking for a way to screen for some time and they think people between the ages of 59 and 75 who smoked a pack a day for 30 years, high smokers, they are the most at risk. even if you quit within the last 15 years, you'd qualify. someone like your old colleague, chris, peter jennings, for example. he commented on his own smoking, he quit for awhile, returned to it. he may be somebody who would qualify for a screening like this. and the goal of lung cancer is to catch it early, because the reason it's so deadly is because it it spreads before people develop symptoms. >> just because you quit doesn't

mean risk is gone. how do you benefit the test in terms of the c.t. scan with radiation? >> it's a legitimate concern and part of the reason this has been a long time coming, they are lower dose ct scans. you have to get one of these scans every year. there's also a question of you find something, it's not cancer, but now you got to biopsy it and go through that whole process, that was also a concern. that's not cheap. we're talking about a few hundred dollars for these people to get screened. this was not an easy decision for the task force, but this is sort of where they stand on lung cancer. >> sanjay, thank you for the information about the bug and the screening. appreciate it, as always. >> you got it, chris, any time. >> kate, back to you. thanks, chris, coming up next on "new day." san diego's mayor is accused of harassing several women, well, he wants taxpayers to foot his legal bills. the growing outrage coming up. plus this, this puppy born

allegations of sexual harassment against the mayor. filner has apologized, but has not resigned. he vows to continue the city's best while under going therapy to address his behavior. >> i will be at the clinic full time, though every morning and evening i will be briefed on city activities. >> reporter: while filner fights on, his foes remain adamant. >> grabbing women in your office is not okay, and you need to go. >> reporter: so chris and kate, one thing that you can feel here in san diego is really just the anger. as i mentioned before, people want this to be over. mayor filner is going to be going into therapy in less than a week's time and one thing is for sure, people will be gathering signatures to try to get the process moving forward while he's undergoing that counseling. >> tory, thank you very much. let's go from that stuff to the good stuff. often i tell you stories about people helping people, but rules are made to be broken, as will your heart. the baby boston terrier was born
