>> i'm christine romans. it is friday, august 2nd. the good news it's friday. and the bad news is it's 5:00 a.m. 5:00 a.m. in the east. a serious and credible terror let prompting the u.s. state department to close more than a dozen embassies and consulate on sunday in the middle east and across the muslim world, including those in egypt and israel. officials say the unspecified let is directed at u.s. targets overseas and may not be confined to diplomatic posts. we'll get more now from cnn's barbara starr at the pentagon. >> reporter: in an extraordinary move the u.s. is closing embassies around the world after what one senior u.s. official told cnn was more than the usual chatter about a potential terrorist threat. >> the department has been apprised of information that out of an abundance of caution and care for our employees and others who may be visiting our installation. indicates we should institute these precautionary steps. >> the move comes as the holy days that mark the end of

ramadan approach at merely a year after the deadly attack on the u.s. mission in benghazi, libya. now the embassy in the capital tripoli -- from egypt where nearly a year ago violent protests threaten the embassy in cairo to tel aviv, baghdad, riyad and doha, qatar. they said it would have been normally open on sunday, and it's being shut down, and the closings may expand to include additional days. another official told cnn the obama administration is monitoring threats against the american embassy in yemen. the move came on the same day president obama met with the president of wremen who has cracked down on al qaeda. >> what we've seen is al qaeda in the peninsula or aqap move

back territories it controlled. sfroo barbara starr, cnn, the pentagon. >> the american consulate in jerusalem were among the diplomatic posts shut down last sunday. that's where cnn's vladimir is standing by. what's the latest? >> reporter: hey, john. well, even as we were setting up for this shot, official from the u.s. consulate right behind me here asked what we were doing and then proceeded to tell us that they are on heightened alert, that they have just this morning themselves security officials outside of the u.s. consulate received a warning that there are credible threats across all embassies in the middle east. in addition to that, we know that today is -- millions in iran and across the muslim world have been called on by the iranian foreign ministry to protest the palestinian situation here in israel and the palestinian territories. jerusalem day has been declared

in iran today. this goes back to 1979 the ayatollah was one of the first to make this the friday of ramadan. heightened alert here. even where we are standing back here with the consulate behind us. don't see much activity now, but they've already told us they are on heightened alert. >> heightened alert. this will pass this weekend. do you think it will be business as usual? >> well, you know, this is the last friday of ramadan. it will end next week. typically there have been protests around this. we are only a pew days away from the anniversary of the benghazi attack and september 11th, 2001, so, you know, right now it doesn't -- there hasn't been any word that they will have business as usual. we assume it might be the case, but so far we tried calling the united states embassy here in israel, and we haven't heard back. right now i would say that it's unclear at this point. >> vladimir in jerusalem.

that is just one of the places that will be shut down over this weekend over this word of terror threat. >> meantime, egypt bracing for more possible violence today. supporters of deposed president mohammed morsi calling for a million man march against egypt's new military rulers following friday prayers. people from mosques around the country are being asked to march under the banner egypt against a coo. the acting minister called on pro-morsi demonstrators to leave cairo. john kerry says the u.s. expects to end drone strikes inside pakistan soon. those were his words. kerry is in pakistan meeting with the country's leaders there. he said in a television interview that president obama has a very realtimeline from ending the drone strikes. pakistan has dropped significantly in recent years, largely because of al qaeda. >> case closed. an investigation into the mine

collapse that trapped 33 chilean miners for two months and there were no charges filed against the mine owners. the miners became heroes in their country after the televised rescue in 2010. one of the rescued miners called the decision by government prosecutors a disgrace to chile's justice support. italy's highest court upholding silvio berlusconi's conviction for tax fraud. he received a four-year sense to be served any time. it will likely be only a year under the am midwesty program. that's how a judge order aid lower court to reexamine a ban on berlusconi holding public office. >> a new round of record highs for stocks. investors loving the news. all three major inteks soaring. the s&p 500 closing at records. much more on this blockbust he day on wall street in 15 minutes. we're looking at the big july jobs report. that's 8:30 eastern. there's a lot going on, john,

but i'm telling you right now, you have had a fantastic year in your 401k. you really need to look. >> jobs report is like a super bowl for christine romans. >> it is. fire crews in the northwest have their hands full this morning. a dozen major wildfires now in washington state and oregon threatening homes, forcing evacuations there. fires have charred more than 200 square miles in oregon. one firefighter was killed. another injured when they were struck by a falling tree. can firefighters expect any help from the weather over the coming days? >> at least the mechanics couple of days they are going to see cooler air. what i wanted to explain is we're pretty much right on track. in july we were looking at the fire threat around the four corners. the difference is, remember, all those flooding stories we talked about the monsoonal moisture. all the moisture came from the gulf, and now we're not seeing that fire danger really anymore in the four corners and really just remaining here on the west coast. as far as the outlook immediately for the next 24 to 48 hours, wrau, they have a nice

flow. you can see the difference in the temperatures here. 60s and 70s where we're seeing the cooler air, and we're seeing those 80s. we have a couple of days behind us. they are going to be warming up by about the middle of the week, but, again, it's that time of the year in that location that they do cause that fire threat. otherwise, let's if to hurricane gill. still a hurricane at 85 miles per hour. what is so interesting here is, notice, this is a 25% chance of circulation in front of it and as well as the one behind it. a lot of times they all die out. that's what we're hoping for. it's still going to remain strong for about a day or so as it remains over water. behind that it will cool and stay south and dissipate and no longer be a threat for hawaii. as things can change. doorian, look at that. right around florida. all the moisture making its way over the bahamas. we're talking about scattered showers throughout the weekend.

good morning. welcome back to "early start." ariel castro's sentence will last a lot longer than he will. the cleveland man who held three women captive many his home for a decade, getting life in prison without parole, plus 1,000 years. castro spoke at his sentencing hearing yesterday, and he blamed everyone, it seemed, but himself. he got an earful from one of his victims. cmn's martin savidge has more. >> reporter: inside the courtroom where ariel castro was sentenced, it was the words of one victim and those who spoke

for the others that will be remembered. michelle knight was the only victim to appear many person, bringing the proceedings to an emotional halt. she had suffered the most and the longest in captivity from castro, which is why her words meant so much. >> you took 11 years of my life away, and i have got it back. i spent 11 years in hell. now your hell is just beginning. >> reporter: small in stature, her strength seemed to fill the entire courtroom. knight said fellow captive dejesus was her teammate. the only good to come from the horror. >> i cried every night. i was so alone. i worried about what would happen to me and the other girls every day. >> reporter: speaking on behalf of gina dejesus was her cousin telling the court today marked the end of a dark chapter of suffering and the start of a new life. >> today we will close this

chapter of our lives. >> reporter: colom also spoke to castro's family who has known the dejesus family for decades, saying it is ariel they blame. >> to the castro family, we are saddened that you are burdened with this horror and will unfortunately forever be tied to these atrocities. please know that we do not hold you accountable. >> reporter: most of her statement was said to the judge, but she spoke her last words to castro himself in his family's native language. may god have mercy on your soul. amanda barry's sister fought back tears fighting back the suffering that he brought to her family for years. >> it is impossible to bring into words how much it hurts. >> reporter: castro himself was given the chance to deliver a speech.

>> my sexual problems and it's so bad on my mind. >> reporter: and at one jaw-dropping point, he said life in his prison home was actually a family. >> i just hope they can find it in their hearts to forgive me because we had a lot of harmony going on in that home. >> reporter: michelle knight remained through it all. then as castro was led away, walked out of the courtroom finally free to start the rest of her life. there was one other memorable moment, and it came when the judge thanked michelle knight for her -- what he said was remarkable composure during the statement by ariel castro. she piped up with her small voice and said you're welcome. it brought the only laughter that has ever been heard many this entire terrible case. martin savidge, cnn, cleveland. >> the courage she showed was

simply remarkable. a judge says evidence from two dating web sites can be used in the murder trial of james holmes. the suspected gunman in the aurora movie theater massacre had profile on match.com and adult friend finder.com. on both sides he allegedly wrote will you visit me in prison? holmes' attorneys tried to block the evidence. prosecutors say it proves that holmes knew what he was doing in the days leading up to the shooting, and they say it shows he was not insane. nothing like a little controversy to boost sales. "rolling stones" july issue that's controversial is on the cover. sold twice as many copies as usual. the magazine took a lot of heat for glamourizing the terror suspect, but sales skyrocketed even though chains like walgreens and stop and shop refused to sell it in their stores. the producers of "glee" plan to deal with the death of actor cory monteith's head on. they say the story line will

address his death. they plan to issue a series of public service announcements honoring his memory. this could be a decision day for alex rodriguez. lawyers for the new york yankees slugger has been trying to pen a deal for a lengthy suspension instead of a lifetime ban. a-rod is scheduled to play in a minor league rehab game in trenton, new jersey, tonight and tomorrow. >> see him while you can. it may abe long time before he plays big league baseball. a new study shows injuries that kept players off the field for eight days or more increased a stunning 37% between 2009 and 2012. the study also shows players with concussions missed an average of 16 days last season. in 2005 the average time missed for a concussion was just four days. >> all right. a california woman says she cannot believe she's alive after a terrifying encounter with a shark. ivan cashman swimming 30 feet from shore at a beach in hawaii

wednesday morning. huge shark suddenly slammed right into her. listen to her describe it. >> i didn't see it coming, and i didn't see it going. the doctor in the e.r. said he thinks according to the bites and where they are and what it looked like, it was probably about a 25-foot shark. that was his guess. >> 25-foot shark. >> that was a 15 inch wound from the middle of her spine to her neck. she also suffered bites to her hand and chin. the beach where the attack happened has since been closed. >> that is horrible. she is lucky. >> stories like that, i'm really afraid of sharks. >> i'm already afraid of sharks. i didn't even need stories like that. >> coming up, breaking records on wall street. from sharks to bulls. is the economy really booming with the stock market's blockbuster day really means for your money.

>> there it is. the calm that is the storm that is friday morning here in new york city. >> the air just smells like jobs day, doesn't it? >> it does. it's a pleasant smell. >> welcome back to early start. >> new highs on wall street. futures are pointing higher today. the s&p 50000 closed above 1,700 for the first time ever yesterday. the dow also reached a record high. the nanks hit its highest level in 13 years. stocks are up 20% this year. that is a huge run for one year. it's great news for your

investments and your 401k. we're going to get a jobs report later. a good jobs report. we're probably going to need to keep the momentum going here. those numbers are due out at 8:30. cnn money predicts 180,000 jobs added in july, and that would be slightly less than the average this year of $200,000 on average a month. they're predicting a slight decrease in the unemployment rate to 7.5%. an awful lot of information about your money for this morning. fewer people are getting laid off these days. first time jobless claims fell to a five-year low yesterday. one of the reasons why the market was powered higher is a good sign for the labor market ahead of today's report. more people are landing jobs. it's really important to study this issue right now of quantity over walt. the mof people working part-time jobs has surged this year, and more than four times as many people have gotten part-time jobs compared to full-time work. that means no benefits, no job stability. that still shows cracks in the economy labor market. employers saying they're trying

to keep their payroll lean because of a lack of demand and economic uncertainty. google hoping to change that. google unveiled the moto x. it's the first smartphone it has fully designed since it bought motorola last year. it will be assembled in the u.s. not made, but assembled in the u.s. it's going to sell for $200. i asked google's eric schmidt what makes this phone better? >> google invented the self-driving car. we think of this as the self-driving phone. it actually responds to you when you speak to it. you don't have to touch the phone to get it to do things. >> that phone goes on sale at the end of august. according to a brand new pew study 36% of young adults, 36% of them age 18 to 31 live at home with mom and dad. that's the highest number in decades. the good news about one-third of those are furthering their education. the study counts students who live in dorms in that 36% apparently. >> hope you like your kids because they're sticking around

those in egypt, libya, saudi arabia, and iraq. tensions rising this morning between the u.s. and russia after moscow defied washington by granting temporary asylum to nsa leaker and american fugitive edward snowden. that's snowden leaving the airport where he had been holed up for more than a month. the move could derail a scheduled summit meeting between presidents obama and putin. cnn matthew chance following developments for us. good morning. >> reporter: good morning. that's right. absolute fury being expressed by officials in the wraits that russia has made this decision to grant edward snowden a political asylum for at least one year. he walked out of the airport. had been couped up for about a month. you see him walking with his lawyers into relative freedom of russia wra, though it's not clear just how free he will be. at the moment his location is being kept secret. his lawyers say that's because edward snowden himself fears for his own safety. he says he believes u.s. intelligence officers, because

of the controversial nature of his position, are chasing him. we also understand from the lawyer of edward snowden as well, the russian lawyer, that is, that he will be living with american sit sfwlenz who are living in the russian capital, so these are people apparently he met on-line when he was couped up inside the airport. he met these people on-line. now he is living with these u.s. citizens somewhere here in moscow. >> so what does he plan to do in snowden -- to do in russia now? >> reporter: it's not clear. i mean, apparently he is going to be able to work here. he has already received an offer of work, many of the, from a prominent owner of a social media website. he said that maybe he may be interested in working in his office to do with protecting personal data on what is the russian ekwifl ens of facebook, so that may be something he wants to take up. it's want still not clear if he intends to stay here in the long-term. his lawyers say he may want to do that, but there is still the

possibility that he could plan on going to south america. remember, he was originally trying to get to ecuador in south america. he shunt sure what his travel plans will be or if he can travel. >> he is a fugitive essentially. united states wants him, but now he has been allowed to stay in russia wra. what kind of impact does asylum have on u.s.-russian relations? >>. >> well, it's potentially very darjed indeed. again, the united states has already expressed its fury. one u.s. lawmaker saying it's like russia has stabbed us in the back. every day he stays, it's like a twist of that knife. we're hearing strong rhetoric from the united states about this. the kremlin say that this was nothing to do with them. they say this was purely a migration issue, although, you know, people find it very hard to believe that frankly given the nature of the russian state, but, yes, it could put more tensions what is already a very tense relationship over international affairs. >> governments cooperate with each other when they want to on

migration issues when you are seeking a fugitive from justice. matthew chance, thank you so much. nice to see you. >> president obama and congressional leaders promising changes at the nsa after meeting with lawmakers where heed. the president said both parties agree to work to improve privacy protections at the agency in the coming months and to make sure that the msa surveillance programs are more transparent to the american people. in michigan a medical student -- this photo was released from a potential witness in the death of paul dewolf. police now believe he is not connected in my way. dewolf was training to be a surgeon at the university of michigan before he was found shot to death a week ago. the murder has everyone on campus on edge. >> it is definitely unnerving. just all the roommates making sure all the doors are locked at all times. >> i see a lot more public safety and police around here. i think they're definitely patrolling the wrar. >> he was set to graduate next

year. accused of using cyanide to kill his wife. 41-year-old doctor autumn cline died from cyanide poisoning. police are focussing on her husband. he has been charged with criminal homicide. he is pleading not guilty to these charges. >> she was so kind, compassionate and caring, and it was just -- she was a good soul. i could not imagine minimum wanting to murder her. >> i think stunned is too little a word for how we feel about this. >> it will be argued that he mixed cyanide with a substance she was taking. he allegedly told his wife the supplement would help get her pregnant. a florida man is vowing to sue after deputies shot him in his own driveway. roy millingedton is out of the hospital. he is recovering from two gunshot wounds this morning. he says he was reaching into his

car for a cigarette when deputies fired at him 17 times thinking he was a thief. his deputies acted appropriately. >> it was just a joke. that's what anthony weaner is saying about his strange on-line alias. carlos danger. his opponents say it's no laughing matter. he says it's no laughing matter to the latino community. wiener says the maim was an inside joke between him and one other person, but he refused to say who that other person was. >> insulting is, you know -- oh, my. oh, my. okay. one minute of terror. that's how people in jacksonville, florida, are describing this tornado that tore through their neighborhood yesterday. the national weather service says it was an ef-2 with 125-mile-an-hour winds that tore down trees, power poles, and fences. one woman shaken up, crouched in

her car since the violent storm moved through. >> it lasted for probably a good minute. probably one of the most terrifying experiences of your life. i got down on the floorboard of my car and i was just looking out and i saw pieces of houses and trees and poles and fencing flying over top of my car. >> the national weather service says it's still trying to figure out how long the tornado touched the ground and how wide it was. >> so will things be better for this weekend? we have the weekend forecast. >> good morning. >> good morning. i want to give you an update on florida. we were talking about the waterspout area a couple of days ago. those conditions are so ripe that it doesn't take much. this is the loop from yesterday. you can see this storm really popped up almost out of nowhere. we're talking three to four inches of rain in 30 minutes. that's an unbelievable storm. of course, we are talking about lightning strikes as often as one a minute. definitely a powerful storm that kicked up.

want to talk about gill. still a category one hurricane here. it's expected to die out eventually. notice this actually since before it and behind it. also chances for development. we're looking at it. that's good news. you see the current track staying south of hawaii, and, again, the weekend eventually it gets to coolerway water. that's the upside for gill. that's what's left of dorian. we're going to be looking for heavy rain as well as the bahamas thereafter. the rest of the country, what we're looking at is a couple of short wave. pieces of energy that kick on through. the best summary i can give you, in the midwest stretching to areas in the dakotas and even as far as indiana, you'll have a chance for rain today. by looks like saturday, the mitted atlantic, and behind that it looks good unless are you in the dakotas or west. >> sorry dakotas.

survival from southwest florida to tell you about. a young boy sucked into a neighborhood drain pipe and dumped into a river. police say the child was under water for about a minute. that's a long time. he was at a party in fort myers last night when he began splashing in a puddle in a nearby ditch. >> there was a tiny whirlpool. you would never have been able to tell there was a drainage pipe under it. >> it appears that the child was swept through the storm drain all the way out into the river approximately 300 yards. >> we saw the little kid. he was being put on the stretcher. you could tell his back was just beat up, and he was just crying. >> it turned out to be a really lucky day for this child. >> that drain pipe is only 18 inches wide. at the edge of the river they found the boy screaming and struggling to get to safety, but the great muse is that doctors say he will be okay. >> oh, add the list of things to be terrified about as a parent, you know? wow. crazy. >> watch your kids.
