>> yeah! i'm so happy to be back. >> i'm the other guy. it is monday. it is 5:00 a.m. in the east. >> we begin with an al qaeda message that left two dozen u.s. embassies closed for a second day. they will be closed for the week. they are being cautious after intelligence officials intercepted al qaeda. barbara starr has the latest for us. good morning barbara. >> good morning. it began with 22 embassies being closed for the weekend. the details are chilling. the cia and the national security agency had been secretly monitoring intelligence tips for weeks. indications of a possible terrorist attack in yemen. alarm bells went off across washington when a crucial message was intercepted

involving communications in the last several days among senior al qaeda operatives. >> al qaeda is stronger than it was before 9/11. >> reporter: final planning for an attack may be complete. intelligenceage cysts are scouring data bases for clues. the u.s. response, going beyond worldwide travel warning and closing embassies across the middle east and africa after meeting with defense commanders, chuck hagel ordered them on a higher state of alert. 1300 marines on board warships will remain off the coast of yemen ready to react. cnn agreed to an administration official's request to with hold details that helped trigger the response because the information is so sensitive. the top republican on the senate intelligence committee confirms

it's the nsa surveillance program that picked up the chatter. >> what we have heard are specifics on what's intended to be done and some individuals who are making plans such as we saw before 9/11. >> reporter: in the latest, we know defense secretary chuck hagel called secretary of state john kerry late last night to discuss the threat further. >> thank you. a threat in pakistan has the capital on red alert this morning. intelligence officials received information about a likely attack on a high value target. now the search is on for the people who could be behind it. we are in islamabad this morning. commanders and police officers are right now scattering islamabad right now.

mainly, they are in the hills right behind me there in the distance. they add to the barrier between the capital and the north of pakistan. the valley to the northwest. crucially, they overlook key military and government buildings. the naval and air force headquarters. behind me, the buildings in the distance, prime minister's house, the presidency and parliament, too. cnn learned through a source involved in the operation the mosque, the central mosque in islamabad may be a target. mosques are busy with ramadan. another target may be a former president's residence. he's held on house arrest since his return to pakistan. cnn islamabad, pakistan. >> thanks for that report. tensions high in cairo.

of the world. he did meet with syria's prime minister. he pledged their alliance would not be shaken. back in this country, officials asking why. after a beautiful saturday night was shattered by a car careening into a crowd of people. the question this morning is, was it an accident or more sinister? >> surveillance shows the suspect's car plowing into people on the crowded board walk. >> he drove and took the left turn down the center of the board walk. people were screaming. it was mayhem. >> reporter: the driver getting out of his car, casing the popular board walk. he gets back into the sedan and floors it. >> he had to press his foot to the gas, pedal to the medal.

the tires were screeching. he was looking for blood. that guy's intention was to kill people. >> reporter: an italian tourist on her honeymoon was killed. the suspect is 38-year-old nathan campbell of los angeles. two hours after this horrifying hit and run, he surrendered to police in santa monica. he told authorities, i think you are looking for me. the woman killed is alice from italy. the italian consulate says she and her husband were married july 20th. the new groom was by her side at the time of the accident and tried to pull his wife away from the car. if there is a motive in this, police aren't saying right now. campbell was bent on evil.

al qaeda terror threat shutting down 19 american embassies and consulates. what we now know about the terror plot. storms hitting the midwest, flooding streets. how much more rain they could get today. >> they need boats there. he hasn't made it to preschool, yet but this 4-year-old has been reelected mayor of a minnesota town. >> welcome back to "early start." i'm john berman. >> he's cute. >> i'm zoraida sambolin. 30 minutes past the hour. >> the top story, the security concerns at u.s. diplomatic posts around the world. nearly two dozen u.s. embassies

and consulates shut down today. among them, the post in abu dhabi. john is live there this morning. what is the latest? >> reporter: this was supposed to be a 24 hour closure in abu dhabi. one day became six. to make this clearer, we have the end of ramadan holiday. it is going to start on wednesday. so, this is basically what we are seeing monday and tuesday, a bridge to that holiday is going back to the strategy that the state department didn't want to get caught flat footed as they did in september 2012. a more cautious approach. let's give you a sense of the landscape. you get an idea of what we are looking at in terms of the u.s. embassy. it's the tall, slanted building here. it stands out in that quarter, which is a mile away from our

operation here. normally, on the new circumstances, we can't go into that quarter with a still or video camera. that's how tight security normally is in the uae. it's worth remembering, 300 miles away from iran, across the straits. security is part of our normal lives here. the u.s. clamped down gives a sense of how worried they are about the traffic and the noise we are hearing from yemen. it's only an hour flight from here to abu dhabi or dubai. >> any surprise on the ground that the closures were extended from one to six days so suddenly? >> reporter: to be candid, the thing we are dealing with is the hot desert winds. at midday, 45 degrees. it's almost life as normal here. emirates living here in the country don't wake up until the afternoon because they are

staying up so late for the last meal before they go for the long day period without having drinking water or liquids and having a meal. things don't pick up until the afternoon. you don't see extra security. if you go back to the embassy, you get a sense of what is going on. there's a handful of marines guarding the facility with nobody inside. the state department is connecting the dots here. over the last two weeks, major outbreaks in the jails of pakistan, iraq and libya. nearly 2,000 militants with the help of al qaeda came out of jail. the traffic noise went up as a result. not surprisingly whether it's the uae or other countries on the list, there's a high level of alert. you don't see it on the streets here as the muslims celebrate the end of ramadan. >> there's a number of prison outbreaks. >> it's incredible. >> john, thanks so much.

33 minutes after the hour. a tragic incident here in new york. a 14-year-old boy is dead after police say he wouldn't drop his gun. sunday morning, this is in the bronx, the two officers saw the teen chasing someone with a gun in his hand. when he wouldn't drop it, an officer fired his weapon, hitting the teen in the jaw. >> i don't see what the officers could have done differently. someone is shooting at someone else, running down the street, they tell him to stop. a shot is fired on that street. i mean, i think they did what we would expect officers of any experience level to dochlt. >> police are trying to identify the other man and investigation into the shooting is ongoing.

an autopsy scheduled for billy slagel who took his own life days before he was to face lethal injection. he was found hanged in his cell in columbus. he was alone. no other inmates were involved. he was sentenced to death in 1988 for the stabbing death of a cleveland neighbor. evacuations in louisiana after a train derailed in baton rouge carrying oil and corrosive chemicals. there haven't been injuries reported. 50 homes near the sight have been evacuated as a precaution. heavy rain. this is what it looked like in hutchinson near wichita. seven inches of rain fell in some areas. sunday morning, in the morning, seven inches, turning the treat streets into rivers. this is good for the drought, but not for getting around.

bigger thunderstorms and of course some of the stronger winds out there. let's look at the outlook for the month. southeast, no surprises, above normal rainfall in the forecast. above normal temperatures in the west. it's been cooler to the northeast and midwest, but we like that. i'll take it. >> i will take it, too. >> take the good part. speaking of outrageous, san diego mayor bob filner begins therapy as he faces a sexual harassment lawsuit and calls for his resignation. one-time supporters are skeptical two weeks will undo inappropriate behavior toward women. he denies his actions constitute sexual harassment. ten women came forward. anthony weiner expected to

the first when i came out. i was used to caring for my kids, not the other way around. >> she is a rock, a matriarch of this family. to think that you may lose her, that's a very debilitating thought. >> answer caused a role reversal. as he's there for me, i can't always be there for him. i missed his graduation. >> she wanted to be here but couldn't. i didn't want her to after the operation. it's still good. >> i am getting better. it helps that we are in this fight together. >> i was able to be there via skype at the graduation even though i couldn't be there. i'm great. i'm doing well. my prognosis is excellent.
