it's tuesday, august 13th, 5:00 a.m. in the east. we begin with the story of hannah anderson. the 16-year-old girl is home. we are piecing together the details of the ordeal she went through. we are finding out more about what happened on the 1,000 mile journey taken from her home by a family friend. miguel marquez has our report. >> reporter: more than a week after being kidnapped by a family friend, hannah anderson is waking up, released from her captor, the 16-year-old teen reunited with her father. >> i'm very proud of her and love her very much. >> reporter: the ordeal hardly from over. she is learning her mother and brother were murdered. they were found in a burned home east of san diego. >> the healing process will be slow. >> reporter: dimaggio is believed to have kidnapped hannah leading to an amber

alert. the manhunt stretching up and down the west coast. she was found 1,000 miles from dimaggio's home. he had a rifle where he held hannah. >> the only way to access it is by helicopter. >> reporter: dimaggio fired at least one shot at the fbi. he was gunned down by the fbi. >> she is a victim in every sense of the word in this horrific crime. >> reporter: the break came wednesday when a group of horseback riders recognized the teen. >> she has a scared look on her face. >> reporter: many details remain unclear including the motive and the circumstances which hannah traveled with dimaggio. now that hannah is back, the family needs to heal and grieve. miguel marquez, cnn, boise, idaho. another abduction and murder case. this one was in rhode island.

daniel rodriguez forced his way into his girlfriend's home killing her and her daughter. he then kidnapped a 2-year-old boy later found wondering all alone and unharmed on a prav dense street. another man called a suspect has been cleared of wrong doing. malcolm has a daughter with one of the women killed. a daughter left with the state while he was in jail. >> you took me away from my kid. my kid! my kid! i'm getting out of jail, what am i supposed to do? i have to go get my kid. >> police treated him as guilty until proven innocent. tragedy at atlanta's turner field at a filly's game. a fan died after falling 65 feet from a deck. it happened in the parking lot before the rain started during a two-hour rain delay.

the fall appeared to be accidental. not known if alcohol was a factor. another case of the rare brain eating aknee baa. it's near ft. myers, florida. he was knee boarding in warm water when he became sick. his family is praying for his recovery. >> it's tough to see him like this. i wish i could touch him and it would transfer over or something. it don't work like that. >> buoy, it is tough to see him like that. there is good news involving another recent victim of it. this 12-year-old is out of icu in arkansas and she continues to improve. she can now sign her own name. >> terrifying. >> unbelievable. you are helpless as a parent. what can you do? on the minds of many of us today, sinkholes like the one that opened up near orlando on

sunday. in the blink of an eye, they are swallowing whole buildings, people in its path. that's what a sinkhole sinds like swallowing a resort monday morning. the 60 foot wide crater in florida just the latest incident in the string of sinkholes around the country. in july, pamela knox plummets into a sinkhole driving on a busy toledo street. >> as the car was falling, i kept calling on the name of jesus. i kept saying, jesus, jesus, jesus. >> some have not been so lucky. >> i could not get him out. i tried so hard. i tried everything i could. >> a sinkhole opened up killing a 36-year-old who was sleeping in his bedroom. this is how sinkholes are formed. a cavity slowly develops in the

limestone bedrock. over time, it widens, eventually breaking surface, then the sands and clay collapse into the hole swallowing everything in the path. repairs can be costly. >> i stepped here and my foot went down in the hole. >> we thought we would live and die here. we didn't have a plan b. >> a plan that could prevent destruction. >> the block could be broken. just another sign of sinkhole activity. enough to know to have your place tested. >> the experts who test the buildings say look for cracks. take every crack seriously. that is a sign that a building or house may be moving or sinking. in florida alone, nearly 25,000 sinkholes reported in five years. that's like 17 a day. >> that is very scary. there's the crackling you can

hear, too, that you know. >> the sound is terrifying. no one was hurt in that building collapse in florida, which is amazing and very lucky. >> six minutes past the hour. heavy rains. that could mean more flooding. indra petersons has the forecast. good morning. >> we are still talking about the same region. last week, dealing with the heavy rain. take a look at oklahoma city. thunderstorms pushing through the area. once again, heavy thunderstorms expected today. it will start to calm down by the overnight hours. either way, rain will be a big story. another low and cold front making its way through the mid-atlantic. with that, slow moving storms and heavier thunderstorms. one to two inches in the northeast. pay attention to the southeast. unbelievable amount of rain already this summer. here we go again. the front is stalling out. all this moisture out of the golf, add in tropical moisture

and let's talk about the rain totals. very heavy rain expected not only today, but for the next five or six days, all the way through sunday. we are going to talk about two to four inches the next three days. how about five to eight inches of rain possible by sunday. they do not need the rain. they have seen so much of it this summer. we are going to see severe weather. anywhere from d.c. area down to the carolinas and mid-atlantic. the thunderstorms could be severe in looking for strong winds and hail. still rain, still thunderstorms in the forecast, especially toward oklahoma. >> serious stuff. for days and days. >> berman is outraged. he was hitting me through the entire thing. >> she's saying why are you looking at me? why are you looking at me? >> thank you. >> appreciate it. it's eight minutes past the hour. another twist in a story of a native american girl torn between her adoptive parents in south carolina and her father in

oklahoma. dustin brown turned himself into police after refusing to return the 3-year-old to the south carolina family that raised her from birth. several courts, including the supreme court says he has no legal right to keep the girl. he said he wants veronica to stay with him. >> i'm going to fight until i have no fight left in me and they say you can't fight no more. i mean, this is my daughter. it's not a yo-yo that i can say hey, i borrowed it for two years, here it is back. this is a living, human being. this is a life that is happy where she's at. to, you know, take her from us is going to be very detrimental to her. it's like ripping her heart out. she's a very, you know, happy child with us. >> in a statement to cnn, a lawyer appointed to represent

morsi are flocking to two sit ins. sit ins the government is vowing to break up. we have live in cairo this morning. give us a sense, how tense is the situation this morning? >> reporter: well, it's as tense as it has been since the sit ins began and the government was promising it was going to disperse them. we are seeing the opposite when it comes to the determination of those demonstrators. the government is saying it already has a plan in place, troops are on stand by and it's trying to find a political way to navigate itself out of the situation. it's proving to be difficult. the pro-morsi demonstrators are so hardened in their demand that the former president be reinstated. it's a nonstarter to begin with. they are arriving, families

arriving by the bus load every single night. we are seeing the various sit in sights, barricades made of bricks, sandbags, piles of rocks at the entrances for people to defend themselves. they say they want to continue to remain peaceful. the great concern is the potential for bloodshed that exists. that is what's holding back any sort of action to dispurse the demonstrators. it's very much a waiting game right now. >> it is. no sense of it deescalating. live this morning in cairo, appreciate it. a provocation days ahead of the next round of israeli/palestinian peace talks. the israeli government has given the okay to east jurs lem and the best bank. a palestinian negotiator called

the move sabotage and stopped short of saying they missed the next round of talks. james whitey bulger waking up a convicted felon as a jury found him guilty of 31 of 32 counts in the racketeering trial. the 83-year-old was convicted of his role in 11 murders since the head of the winter hill gang in the '70s and '80s. bulger scheduled to be sentenced in november. part of a discrimination case against paula deen has been thrown out. a white former deen employee has no claim they discriminated against black workers. a spokeswoman for deen says she was pleased and deen believes in equal opportunity and kindness

picture of him. 80%. the stop and frisk program that lets police detain anyone they deem suspicious is very much in question. a federal judge said it is unconstitutional. even though the program was designed to prevent crimes before they happen, many of the stop and frisks say it targeted innocent people. >> leroy downs was sitting on the step outside his own home like this when it happened. >> the officers drove past me, went up the street, reversed, came out and approached me. >> reporter: what did they say the reason was? >> you look like you was spoking weed. i said to them, i said i'm talking on a cell phone. they cursed at me, said get against the fence. started pushing me toward the fence and searched me.

>> reporter: they found nothing on him, no guns or drugs. new york's mayor and commissioner say they have to stop people like that to save lives and reduce crime. they plan to repeal the ruling. >> we go where the reports of crimes are. those, unfortunately, happen to be poor neighborhoods and minority neighborhoods. >> 7363 murders in new york city compared to the prior years of the mayor taking office. those lives saved were overwhelmingly lives of young men of color. >> reporter: a judge said police reasoning didn't add up. they stopped 4.4 million people from 2004 to mid-2012. 87% of them black or latino. 12% were charged with crimes. the reasons given for the stops, so-called movements. being in high crime areas or

belongings behind. one building completely destroyed. two others evaluated for structural damage. question right now, what is the situation we saw the fires out west. big rain headed. what is the story? >> we look at boise overnight. a couple lightning bolts in the area. this was a concern. they were worried because it has been so dry that it could spark additional wildfires. there's no red flag warnings by the specific fire. in idaho, as a whole, we are looking at the dry conditions, low humidity and high heat. we are going to watch this ridge of high pressure building. with that, temperatures will be going up. the temperatures they are concerned with are the winds as the thunderstorms move in and out. generally calmer conditions and warmer conditions into the forecast. we'll be monitoring that. we were talking about the heavy rains. still talking unbelievably heavy

rains through the country. dealing with thunderstorms, heavy rain continues throughout the day. the flooding potential remains high. good news, by the end of the week, things are going to calm down. thunderstorms in the forecast. the other thing to watch is the cold front that pushes through the mid-atlantic today. the potential for severe weather. similar to last week, it will kick through quickly bringing one to two inches, some places three inches of rain. the southern portion, the tail is going to stall out, again. heavy rain in the southeast. the moisture streams through the golf. the tropical moisture will produce, look at the totals, heavy amounts of rain, two to four inches of rain. by sunday, five to eight inches possible around the gulf, especially florida.
