many people feel it would be untouchable. >> try doing that if you're not a member of the communist party. pamela, it took him year and now they are saying 15 years. >> years and not to mention how much money it took. >> take it away. "newsroom" starts right now. >> he may have only months to live. a teenage in georgia is in need of a transplant. the family says the hospital won't put his name on the list. anthony weiner is dropping hints abtd his wife's potential 2016 plans.
10:01 am
sgr do you know what her role will be in 2016? >> i do. >> what is it? >> i'm not telling you. this is "cnn newsroom." now to a story that's grabbing national attention. a 15-year-old boy may have less than six months to live because he need a heart transplant. his family says doctors won't put him on one. doctors see him as a troubled teen who wears an ankle bracelet. they see him as poor and black and a troublemaker. >> reporter: i want doctors to give me an opportunity. those are the words from anthony stokes as he was video taped sunday night in his hospital
10:02 am
room. for the past month he's been in the children's hospital with an enlarged heart. it appears the life saving procedure will never come. >> i know it's wrong because if they get to know him they would love him. >> reporter: according to this letter the family gave us, doctors have decided the 15-year-old does not qualify to be put on the heart transplant list because of his history of noncompliance. >> they don't have any evidence showing he would take his medicine and he wouldn't have any follow up care. >> reporter: doctors weren't specific in the care but family friends say it's due to his history of bad grades and run ins with the law. supporters and activists are pushing back demanding doctors take a second look. >> they've given him a delt sentence. >> reporter: children's health care released this statement. the well willing of our patients is always our first priority. we're continuing to work with this family in looking at all
10:03 am
options regarding this patient's health care. we follow very specific criteria in determining eligibility for transplant of any kind. in they just don't want to give him a chance. >> this races a lot of questions. can a teenager be denied a life saving measure for not taking medicine in the past and having trouble with the law and is race playing into this decision? hi, art. i want to mention that children's hospital will be giving us an updated statement at 4:00. we may learn more then. first off, help us understand what noncompliance means in this case. >> noncompliance mean ifs you get the transplant you've got a lot of work to do after the transplant. you have to come in for your appointments. a ton of medicine you have to take or the transplant will fail and you have to pay attention to any signs of change in your health, let doctors see you
10:04 am
regularly. it would mine the heart is rejecting and they'll want to change your medication. you get the transplant and that's the start but for the rest of your life you'll have to be under doctors orders, doctors control. if you don't do that there's a strong chance the heart transplant if fail. >> there were 3400 people on the list and only 2,000 transplants took place. 331 people died waiting for heart. the demand is much greater than the supply. do you think the fact that hearts are so hard to dom by that this could play a fact in the role that the teenager isn't being put on the list. >> hearts are the toughest organ to get. we have two kidneys when we die. they are very tough to dpet. transplant centers do pay
10:05 am
attention to who is likely to comply and follow doctors orders. teenagers notorious for being noncomplia noncompliant. i think that's the definition of being a teenager. i think in this case he has a bit of a claim. you're not rejecting all teenagers. you're rejecting me. i'm paying attention. i'm going to try to do the right thing. i'm not sure the hospital has the strongest case for saying we're not going to put you on the list. >> right. in anthony's case as we heard in this story he had -- the government issued him ankle bracelets for fighting in school and his mother says he hasn't much of a record as far as going to doctor and so forth. does having run ins with the law, could that prevent you from being put on the list in. >> i don't think so.
10:06 am
you're trying to make a prediction about is he going to be a good patient. lots of teenagers have run ins with the law and fighting with their parents and a lot of teenagers don't do what their parents or authority figures tell them to do. the hospital will come up with some very strong evidence of why this kid is not likely to comply should he get a transplant. put him this counselling right now. let's work with him so he understands what's expected post transplant if he's lucky enough to get one. let's work with him and the family. >> give him a shot. surely if it's a life or death situation they should have another shot to show they would comply if they were given the transplant. what are the options here? >> his age makes him high risk
10:07 am
for noncompliance. a 15-year-old hasn't had a life to live. take somebody in their 60s, you'd say let's give extra points to the younger person. they deserve a full life. i think there may be a way if they can get aen agreement here because of this attention and publicity and back and forth. they'll say let's put him in counselling and they can say he will do what we needs him to do. >> clearly he has basic incentury tiinse incentive to comply. he has six months to live. some tragic moments played out at the braves phillys game last night. a man fell to his death.
10:08 am
he fell about 65 feet from an upper level andlandsed in the players parking area. atlanta police say the fall appears to be accidental. well, it's a win for paula deen. a federal judge ruled that. she has no standing to sue the em battled chef for race discrimination. you probably remember how deen's career took a big plunge. she posted a couple of awkward apologies online. you probably remember these. >> i want to apologize to everybody for the wrong that i've done. i want to learn and grow from this. >> on the heels of it all dean lost her food network cooking show and a number of endorsements including walmart,

american airlines will create the biggest airline. the two companies want to go ahead but the u.s. justice department is saying wait a minute. it files a suit to stop the deal from taking off. renee marsh joins me with more on this story. we've seen mergers in recent years. the justice department didn't step in. what's the issue? >> there's two big issues. the first one is if they allow this merger that would mean less competition and they say less competition leads to higher ticket prices. the big picture is they believe the consumer is going to lose if the th this merger was allowed to happen. we got a response from american airlines and u.s. airways is they plan to fight the justice department's action. we see a fight is setting up.
10:18 am
they plan on taking whatever legal measures are necessary to go against what the justice department is trying to do. >> you know it depends on who you can ask because the justice department would say zero is at stake. they say both companies would do just fine as stand alones. they would be able to compete. they would be healthy companies. the justice department, even today, using airline executives words against them saying that in the past both airlines have repeatedly said that they don't need the merger to succeed. the justice department is saying what's at stake is big bucks for the consumer. it would result in consumers
10:19 am
paying hundreds of millions of dollars for more when it comes to service they would be getting a lot less. the airline saying look, they need to do this. if they are able to do this they would be able to run their airline a lot more efficiently. the airline saying consumers would been fit. in they both think they have a strong case here. has the department of justice been can feel at halting big mergers in the past. >> they have about 11 or 12 years ago. they did oppose the continental merger. the question may be why not allow this one. why try to put the brakes on this one. it's because the landscape is a lot different now. yoors ago they were seen as a good thing because the airlines were struggling. now the airlines are making a lot of money.
10:20 am

10:27 am
the last person either of them wants talking about this right now is anthony weiner. it's another distraction. hillary clinton has opinion more and more out there on the stage now. >> on that note, when she stepped down as secretary of state she said she wanted to enjoy some down time but she said she will be out giving some speech. let's tyke a listen. >> over the coming months i will deliver a series of speeches focused on questions like these. today the assault on vaoting rights which threatens to block millions of americans from fully participating and further eroding public trust. >> she's staying in the spot slight. is that an indication she's likely to run in 2016? >> she's going to have a conversation with her family, her doctor and with herself about a year or so down the road about whether to get into 2016.

10:34 am
friends. almost four out of ten white americans have tno friends outside of their race. were you surprised by that figure? >> i was surprised. i think if you live in large urban centers you expect to see more mixing of people socially but if you look at more broadly what america is and how it's broken up, it's less surprising. i think it was a mixed bag and there are explainers as to why the largest ethnic group or racial group spends more time with themselves than they to with others. >> there is a difference depending on what group you're in. let's look at some of these numbers. none whites were likely than whites to have friends outside of their race. only about 25% had to friends of another race. why do you think hispanics, blacks an asians have more
10:35 am
diversity when it comes to their friendships. >> as a practical matter there are fewer of them. they will be forced into circumstances where they are going to have to find people who don't look exactly like them. they're working in a country that is a majority white country. they are working in places that are majority white. if they're going to have careers and lives in that context they're going to be forced to make friends who don't necessarily look like them. unlike whites who have an easier time staying within their culture boundaries. in do you think where these people live play a big role in these numbers we're seeing in your poll? >> i think, yes, it does. it obviously makes a big difference. certainly in the south there tends to be the white community tends to stick together a little more but not as dramatically as
10:36 am
you might think. there's also rural pockets of this country where the communities themselves are ho homogeneous. >> also on geography but age plays a roll. 42% of americans ages 30 and up report not having any friends of a different race. that falls to 30% for americans ages 18 to 29. why do you think that is? >> i think there are two factors there. number one, the young -- people under 30 tend to be more social. they socialize in different settings. they are in university, early in their careers. they are spending more times at restaurants and bars. as you get older you tend to socialize more within the confines of where you live an where you work.
10:37 am
it's interesting that when you look at the break down of people who -- of co-workers you'll find similar ratios to the ones who say they're close friends. i think that's part of it. also to president obama's point about the younger generation getting it more than others. i look at my daughters generation and my son's generation and you see it. you see their friends are a great mix of people where as if you look around, the people i grew up with, you don't see the same circumstances. >> certainly a trend toward more integration. why did you decide to do the poll at this time? >> this is an ongoing poll. we've been polling hundreds of thousands of people now for the better part of 18 months. we try to ask questions that are
10:38 am
driven after the news. after the zimmerman trial an acquittal down in florida and the remarks by the president we thought it would be interesting to ask americans how much do they -- how many time do they spend and how close are they to people who don't look like them. these are types of questions we ask routinely to try and gauge the pulse of the american public. >> your poll raises a lot of questions. we appreciate your coming onto talk with us. in thank you. some other stories. if you buy nail polish remover at cvs you'll have to show your id. the store is requiring customers to show identification when they purchase items with acetone. the concern is it's an ingredient used to make meth. cvs is restricting the amount a
