it is 5:00 a.m. in the east. the bloodiest violence in two years. at least 421 people are dead, thousands more injured after police moved in to try and dispurse two sit-ins with morsi. supporters fought back. reza is live with the latest. >> reporter: it is eerily calm. it has a lot to do with the emergency law that went into effect last night. you can feel the cloud of uncertainty hanging over this city and this country a sense of dread after yesterday's awful events. many are describing what happened yesterday as a massacre. with the staggering death toll and increasingly it's going to be tough to dispute that. the death toll according to the health ministry, 400 killed,

more than 3,500 injured. all of this the outcome of a ferocious crackdown by security forces targeting two pro-morsi sit-in demonstrations going on for six weeks. there are a lot of rumors going around that this crackdown would happen. 6:30 a.m. yesterday morning, it came. again, it came with ver osty. conflicting accounts of what happened. the interior ministry claiming their tried to move the protesters out using water cannons and tear gas. they say the protesters fired first and they had to retaliate. when you talk to supporters of morsi, they have a different story. they say security forces came in shooting at protesters. when you have conflicting accounts, it's important for us to describe what we saw.

from our vantage point, we can tell you many of the protesters injured and killed were unarmed. again, from our vantage point. moving forward, this military backed government has a lot of questions to answer about yesterday's operation. zoraida? >> if we look at the images, it's very, very disturbing. you mentioned it's quiet right now. is there an undercurrent or information coming on twitter or facebook of what could be to come? >> reporter: well, the government is certainly speaking. yesterday, the prime minister and the interior minister delivered statements justifying this deadly crackdown saying they were obliged to do it. over the past few weeks they described it as a threat to national security. they claimed there were links to

terrorism when it came to the demonstration. it's important to stress, we have been out there for six weeks and we simply didn't observe, in these demonstrations, in the sit-in demonstrations any activity that could be linked to terrorism. however, this is the narrative that was pushed by the government that they are pushing today, using it as justification for what happened yesterday. >> reza, live in cairo this morning. the big question is what is the united states going to do, if anything, right? >> reza talked about from his vantage point. we are so lucky to have his vantage point. he was on the ground as it was happening. he saw the bodies. we were with him when the bodies were carried behind him. it's important to have this brave reporting. the white house is condemning the crackdown in egypt choosing words carefully.

the interim government may not be interested in a return to democracy. >> violence will make it more difficult to move egypt forward and runs directly counter to the pledged by the interim government. it is indication they are not currently following through on that promise, to transition back to a democratically elected seville yan government. they are not committed to an inclusive process. >> secretary of state john kerry is calling on both sides to seek a political solution to the crisis. the u.n. weapons inspectors may be on the ground in syria. the assad regime agreed to this trip, which would last two weeks and look into whether chemical weapons were used during the civil war. more than a dozen reports of chemical weapons used since this began. a deadly crash of a ups

explosions. >> i heard three booms, i heard boom, boom, boom. >> reporter: crash investigators are only beginning to find answers. a mystery of critical communication. david mattingly, cnn, atlanta. we are learning more about the kidnapping of hannah anderson. unsealed warrants revealed he tortured and killed her mother and brother and set fire to his house before snatching hannah as she left cheer leading practice. there had been 13 calls between hannah and dimaggio that day before her phone was turned off. autopsy reports she dimaggio was shot five times. manningly is apologizing for leaking information to wikileaks. he told the judge he is sorry

for his actions because they hurt people and the country. he's facing up to 90 years in prison. lawyers showed a picture of manning in a blond wig and make up, which he e-mailed to a superior claiming he was mentally unstable when he leaked the documents. you know, we know how powerful water can be in floods, washing away cars and people in flood zones. >> yes. >> what happens when they finally recede? this happens. this buckled road in hutchinson, kansas, an area hit hard last week. officials say the floodwaters washed away the ground under the road causing it to give way. >> indra petersons has her eye on the forecast. any rain on tap? we have been talking about all the crazy rain. >> this is a familiar story. more and more rain. three inches of rain in three days. but, for this month already,

and put an end to this conflict. monday, brown turned himself into authorities after failing to show up for a court appearance. he was freed on $10,000 bond. he faces an extradition. an order the governor promises to expedite if he can you not cooperate. at his client's request, he reached out to the couple's representative to discuss a resolution in the best interest of baby veronica, including meeting with the couple. the next hearing is set for september 12th. i have to tell you, when you start hearing what the parns are saying, the adoptive parents, they would be willing to have some sort of resolution where he can be, d biological father can be in the life of the little girl as well. >> a beautiful girl. >> they all love her, clearly. >> they adore her. she is being cared for, which is

>> we are watching cisco stock that is slightly lower after a 10% sell off. it's a big move. it's a widely held stock, it's probably in your 401(k). the crow said there would be 5% of the work force job cuts. the company earned $2.8 billion on sales of $12.4 billion. it sounds good, right? they are not the numbers wall street was looking for. they are the biggest maker of equipment. cisco touches so many technology nerves across businesses. walmart releasing earnings. wall street optimistic the company will report a sizable increase. what the company says about that for fall shopping season. behind the holidays, it's the most important period for retailers.

macy's disappointed investors. stocks fell. we are watching to see how consumers are surviving what is still a challenging environment without jobs growing. a surprise on the foreclosure front. housing markets are recovering from the debts. others seem to be stumbling into it. these foreclosure hot spots are places you wouldn't expect. maryland, 275%. oregon, filings surged 137%. new jersey's foreclosures spiked 89%. connecticut and new york, you can see the numbers. experts say they kept a lid on the foreclosure industry during the worst of the housing crisis. it may be coming back to haunt them. we haven't seen the worst of it. the death throws of the foreclosure crisis. you are seeing spikes in the states. huge spikes.

all since yesterday. give us aceps of the feeling in the city today. quiet, but for how long? >> reporter: that's not clear, but it is quiet at the moment, john. of course, thursdays in egypt are the end of the workweek. usually cairo is buzzing with activity. it's calm and probably because of the state of emergency that was declared late last night after an awful day. it's difficult to describe the outrage, the grief, the widespread bloodshed we witnessed yesterday. many describing what happened yesterday as a massacre and considering the death toll, many will say it's a fitting description. according to the health ministry, 420 people killed. more than 3,000 injured. all of this, the outcome of a ferocious and brutal crackdown launch by security forces and

military backed government targeting two sit-in demonstrations going on six weeks in support of the ousted president, morsi. they threatened they were going in 6:30 a.m. yesterday morning it happened. when we talked to the two sides, very different accounts. the ministry, they claim they tried to use non-lethal weapons using water cannons and tear gas to disperse people. they claim protesters shot first. when you talk to the muslim brotherhood and supporters of the ousted president, morsi, they have a different story. that i say security forces came in, unarmed protesters. when you have the conflicting accounts, it's important to point out we were there. based on what we saw, we simply did not witness any armed protesters and we witnessed

plenty of unarmed protesters who were injured. many who were killed. just an awful, awful day yesterday here in egypt. >> the words you used, you said ferocious and brutal. the strength of the crackdown here, the scope of it from the military, from the government there seems beyond anything we have seen, including in 2011 when this all started. can the military there, if it wants to, completely subdue the population? >> reporter: well, it showed that it can, temporarily, but many say a backlash is coming, john. i think it's important to step back and put this into context. this is not the first deadly crackdown we have seen after the ouster of the former president, mohamed morsi on july 3rd. a few days after he was overthrown, the military cracking down at a mostly

peaceful demonstration according to rights groups. more than 50 killed, most of them unarmed according to rights groups. two weeks later, another crackdown, more than 80 people killed. that is why the international community, international rights groups are coming down hard on the interim government asking for an explanation, condemning what happened yesterday. the interim government maintains it was justified. they claim the demonstrations were a threat to national security. they have a lot of important questions to answer in the coming days as to what happened and why they used such force. >> meanwhile, in a state of emergency, resa, we are lucky to have you in cairo. thanks for being with us. >> i was asking about the undercurrent and what people were saying. there's been a call by the muslim brotherhood saying come out to the street to show your support. it's worrisome.

>> the government controls the television media. you have two cross currents. two media cross currents battling each other. they are effective in getting numbers out. >> the obama administration is condemning the crackdown and the military leader who is backed it saying they are not working toward restoring the democratic government. secretary of state john kerry called it deplorable and pleaded for waum. >> the promise of the 2011 revolution has not been fully realized. the final outcome of that resolution is not decided. it will be shaped in the hours ahead, in the days ahead. it will be shaped by the decisions which all of egypt's political leaders make now and in the these days ahead. >> kerry called on both sides to take a step back and negotiate an end to the crisis.

will they pull the plug on the money is the question. >> stay with us on the latest. it is developing. a michigan doctor is being held on $9 million bond facing charges that he intentionally misdiagnosed his cancer patients. he is accused of manipulating the medicare program ordering chemotherapy for those who didn't need it. many patients are shocked saying they liked and trusted him. >> it came as a total surprise when he was arrested. looking back now, there were things that were odd but i never would have suspected he was doing the things he's accused of doing. >> the government says the clinic billed medicare some $35 million over two years. his lawyers argued there's no proof his actions were, in fact, fraud. >> that's just an unbelievable

story. a second sinkhole was found at the dune that swallowed a 6-year-old boy. it was found near where nathan was buried in sand. the boy spent two weeks in the hospital after he was pulled out of the dune. while he's recovering, nathan could face lung problems in the future because of the horrible ordeal. a 5-year-old boy is hospitalized after falling from a kiddy roller coaster on long island. he suffered a severe leg injury. he crawled under the lap bar on the coaster and tried to get off before the ride stopped. he fell on to the track. he was on the ride with his 7-year-old sister. gay marriages will continue in california. the state's highest court turned aside the final attempt to stop

the union. that's the ballot measure that stopped gay marriage in 2008. in june, the u.s. supreme court turned aside a challenge ruling ordering marriages resume in california. they did, days later. if you are gay and married in the military, you will be able to qualify for the same family benefits given to other married couples including housing, medical care and two weeks of leave for a wedding. it barred federal recognition for same-sex marriage. the policy change is set to take effect in early september. in utah, a wildfire burns out of control near park city. it's already destroyed more than a dozen homes. hundreds more are right in the path. that fire was started by a lightning strike. one official says when it broke out it spread faster than a person could run. right now, it's about 25%

contained. >> we have fires in idaho, also. indra petersons is tracking the weather for us. how is it looking? >> i'm not making friends. warnings in utah and idaho. we are talking high heat and low humidity. unfortunately, it looks like that's going to be the case for a day or so with temperatures nearing records. look how far above normal we are. it's ten degrees above normal. there's relief by the weekend. it brings a threat of lightning as thunderstorms roll into the forecast. here is the story today. heat out west. cool and dry. it feels like fall and flooding in the southeast. look at the temperatures, well below normal. a lot of 70s out there. gorgeous. a quick update on the tropics, we have a depression here. it doesn't look to be a big concern. we are monitoring something closer to home. 70% chance of development around cuba. we are going to watch this.

he's loud and extremely good looking. >> reporter: it's certainly not where you would expect to see a prince. amist cows and sheeps and horses, this agricultural show is his first official royal engagement since baby george was born. one of his last as a resident here. the remote island in wales he and kathryn called home for more than 2 1/2 years. in september, william finishes his tour of duty as a royal air force search and rescue pilot. he will leave. >> this has been our first home together and will always be a special place for us both. kathryn and i look forward to returning again and again over the coming years with our family. >> they were able to live here in relative privacy. it was here where william and kate appeared for the first royal engagement launching a lifeboat just before their
