behavior. >> he needs help, i think. >> i'm don lemon in for john r berman. >> i'm zoraida sambolin. breaking overnight, super typhoon haiyan. a category 5 storm with winds topping out at 230 miles per hour. it is slamming into the philippines and happening right now and overnight and putting millions of people directly in harm's way. we go live to kathy novak who is live on the phone from manila this morning. i know it's difficult to get live images out of there because you're in the midst of this. can you describe what is happening right now? >> if i can give you a sense how big this storm is. it covers an area as large from washington, d.c. to miami. you said this storm is a

category five. if we compare that to super storm sandy, sandy was a category three when it hit cuba and two when it cost the u.s. east coast. this is a category five and only because there are no categories above five. it is just huge. only three official reports of death but it's hard to get information from these hard-hit areas. communications are still cut to many of those regions. several aviation authorities haven't been able to make contact with their counterparts in these hard-hit areas. in fact, for about five hours, in the last message they got from one of the airports badly hit a text that said airport ruined, need assistance. 25 million people in its path. >> you got to know a storm of this magnitude was on its way. what about evacuation? were they able to get a lot of people out of those areas? >> the laugh few days, we had warnings that the storm was coming and that it was going to

be big. so people did heed those warnings and get into evacuation centers. the fact is the philippines has some very physical problems with infrastructure. there are reports coming out of one of the areas that was hit from a local reporter on the phone and local radio here saying that people had been evacuated to a sport center that had been set up as an evacuation center and then they had to be moved because the roof was ripped off that evacuation center and the roof itself is made out of sheet metal that would cause damage across that area as well. those are the kind of infrastructure that people are put into here in the philippines. as well the region that is being hit includes the hall that was hid by a deadly earthquake last month. more than 200 killed there. more than 5,000 people left homeless. those people had been living in tents because they lost their homes and now hit by this cyclone. on top of it all aftershocks the past months since that major hurricane so these people living

in tents and lost their home and now afraid to go into the evacuation center because they are concerned that if there are more aftershocks and they are in a structure that may not be sound so these are the problems. people have been evacuated. so far the official reports are still not too many casualties and even in one of the areas that was first hit very early this morning local time, some people are starting to be allowed back into their homes. so there were preparations but people are warned to -- it is still hitting the philippines. >> i want to ask you one final question. i know it is a very wide swath in their and probably a lot of different types of homes but can those homes sustain these heavy winds? was that a concern going in? >> i think the short answer is frankly no. these winds are so huge even your big buildings would have trouble sustaining the winds. we have an evacuation center that was supposed to be the safe haven for people when the roof was ripped clean off. if you can picture the kind of

homes typical in the philippines you and i may consider as shanty homes. a lot of them are up against the coast that is hit by this typhoon. a lot of concern that many people will have their homes just blown away by these storms. >> that is what i was worried about, kathy, those shanty style homes and those tin roofs. we appreciate having you there and will continue to check in with you as this storm progresses. thank you. >> so sad because as you said they had, you know, an earthquake earlier and then they were already living -- reminds me of haiti. hurricane after hurricane and people were already living in tents. unbelievable. >> the mass destruction and how long it takes to federal government out how many are missing potentially. we are going to continue to follow this for you. >> i think we will be hearing a lot more about possible deaths and injuries with. let's move on now. bring it back to the united states. apology from the president of the united states. he is telling millions of americans who are getting dropped by their insurance companies because of obama care

twitter says they have 230 million users. they were priced at 26 bucks a share but then when the stock opened around 10:45 yesterday morning it skyrocketed to $45.10 a share. at one point in the trading day, it hit more than 50 bucks a share. then it came down at the end of the day and closed just under $45. but this is what really amazes me. that valuation at $45 it values twitter at $25 billion! that is more than a lot of established companies like hershey and like alcoa and tiffany's and delta it's valid at more than that. even more than netflix. that is an outstanding number. this in all regards a monster debut. made a lot of people not us, really rich. cofounder of twitter $24.6 billion his stake.

and the rest of the board members. it is all outstanding. >> are any of them single? >> i have no idea! not getting into their personal life. i don't know. but what is astounding -- >> i think, guys, other than don wanting to know if they are single this company yet to turn a profit. they have never turned a profit the first nine months of this year they brought in about -- >> really makes it outstanding. >> it is. they are bringing in money. if you look at that number on the screen 134 million is how much they have lost so far in the first nine months of this year and brought in 422 million in that period but the key here, we have to give this a caveat because they could be profitable. they could take in the money from advertisers and not invest, not acquire companies and just put it towards their bottom line so it looks better on paper but not what they are doing. they are spending it and reinvesting in the company and opening offices and hiring. it's all how you look at it. it's a big bet and investors

love this. they jumped in yesterday. >> it's been interesting to watch twitter. i was watching on the elliptical and watching it go up and down. see what happens on that. something else on horizon that could affect the market. >> jobs report. we will get that in less than three hours. unemployment for october. we will see what that number is. it will likely move the markets a bit. a lot of debate on how, quote/unquote, clean this jobs report is going to be. what does that mean? what factors in because it's october when we had that ferguson shutdown. federal furloughed workers are going to skew the results here. some economists think we won't see much of a change and others are saying the unemployment rate will tick higher as a result because even though the workers were only temporarily laid off and now back to work, they will be counted as unemployed so that will tick higher so keep that in mind. this brings up this other big question which is the issue what does it do to fed policy?

the fed is pumping up this economy so much for years. part of the fed mandate is bring employment dow-- unemployment d. it's been propping up the housing market and economy and so many things. is it time? is it a good thing? i think that is the big question. looking what we are expecting we are expecti ining 120,000 jobs d last month and unemployment tick up slightly to 7.3% and get that 8:30 eastern today and bring it to you on "new day." but we are all talking about twitter. >> i think it's really high. of course, i don't even invest in individual stocks but i think -- i think you -- you don't just think you know a company because you use it a lot. look at the fundamentals of this company. >> can i tell you something? the adviser here at cnn and they help you out. the best thing i ever did was on my own. >> you trust your gut. >> apple. >> where did you get in tap?
