"newsroom" starts now. -- captions by vitac -- www.vitac.com good morning. i'm carol costello, thank you for spending your veterans day with us. this is what it looks like in washington, d.c., at the tomb of the unknown. later this morning president obama will join others at arlington national cemetery, one of many events honoring our nation's service members and this morning, u.s. troops find themselves in a familiar role, helping those in need. u.s. marines now on the ground in the filipino city of tacloban, which took a direct hit from a super typhoon described as possibly the strongest hurricane in history. they're spear-heading relief efforts from the city's airport which reopened today to limited commercial flights. >> i brought my contingency command post down here, working with the united states agency for international development so there's a lot that we can do. >> reporter: are we going to be

seeing more airplanes coming in today? >> on the leading edge of it. you'll see more marines landing probably within a few hours. >> the official death toll in the philippines is now 942, as many as 10,000 people feared dead. the united nations estimates more than 9 million people have been impacted by the storm, and for those who survived, the situation is becoming desperate. one man waving a white flag to get the attention of aid workers, other writing this short but powerful message on a basketball court "we need food." amid the devastation a sign of hope, this baby born at the tacloban airport in a makeshift hospital. the storm which has weakened to a tropical storm is moving into southern china after making landfall in vietnam. early reports are the damage will not be as extensive in those countries as it was in the philippin philippines. let's go to seabeau, philippines, 60 miles where the storm came onshore, we find cnn

correspondent ana coren. good morning. >> reporter: hi, carol, yes, i'm at the cebu strip for the staging ground for the massive military operation that is under way. you mention those hard-hit areas not far from where we are and they are in desperate need of food, freshwater and medical supplies. they have going without them for some four days now and struggling. we traveled dimilitary chopper to the north of cebu hit extremely hard and places have been completely wiped out. 90% of the islands completely gone so these people are desperate, in need of these supplies and they need these convoys to get to them as soon as possible. c-130 hercules have been taking off from this airport throughout the day.

they've also been not only shipping out supplies but also bringing in survivors from those hard-hit areas. we spoke to some of those people and they're shell shocked. they have lost everything. their family, their friends, their homes, so it really is a dire situation here in the philippines, and it's only going to become more so in the coming days, as more people arrive. carol in. >> anna coren reporting live from the philippines. blinding rain, ferocious winds, deafening sounds, the next guest describes this super typhoon which came asheer two blocks from his hotel. captured on video trees bending to the force of winds gusting up to 250 miles per hour. storm surges dumping between 40 and 50 feet of water on the streets as residents used whatever they could find, including practice stresses to escape. joining she storm chaser james reynolds who took that incredible video. good morning, james. >> good morning.

>> tell me what it was like to be in the heart of that storm. >> this was a terrifying event to go through, the sheer ferocity of the storm, as it came ashore over tacloban was really just unimaginable. i've covered many typhoons before, but this was just off the scale, compared to anything i've seen. i've documented and been through. the winds just screaming, debris hitting off solid concrete hotels so hard we could feel it shaking and of course the terrifying force of the storm surge and the rapid speed at which it swamped the downtown parts of the city. >> we hear this kind of thing all the time, that the initial storm doesn't cause most of the damage, the storm surge that comes after causes the most devastation. explain that to us. >> well, yes, as the storm moved over our location, it was when the backhand wind started blowing the water into the bay

which tacloban sits on. these on shore winds pushed this big wall of water right into the city and swamped it and those fragile, vulnerable communities along the coast it was essentially like they were hit by a tsunami. i was out in that area just two hours after the worst of the storm had passed and people, their properties just completely wiped out, bodies being pulled from the rebel, shell-shocked residents trying to salvage what little belongings were left in the rubble. >> just sounds devastating. thank you for sharing your pictures and your story, james reynolds live from hong kong. tonight's anderson cooper will be in manila for a close up look at the destruction and how aide members are working together to recover. that's at 8:00 and 10:00 eastern on cnn. for more on how you can help the survivors of this disaster in the philippines, visit cnn.com/impact. no deal yet with iran over its nuclear program, a weekend

of intense talks in geneva failed to strike an agreement that would have stopped or curbed iran's enrichment of uranium. for a while it looked like a deal was close, could have eased the way for iran to get out from under crippling economic sanctions. john kerry downplayed the reaching of a deal saying it was all part of the process. >> no agreement has been reached about the end game here. that's the subject of the negotiation. the sanctions were put in place in order to bring about a negotiation. >> cnn's reza sayah joins us from tehran with that side of the story. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, carol. lot of people here in iran, and i think in washington, all over the world eager to find out why a deal, agreement wasn't reached during the nuclear talks in geneva and i think until all sides meet again a lot of people

are going to dissect every statement made by officials including secretary of state john kerry. here in iran it's widely believed the agreement wasn't signed because the world powers were not in agreement, there were divisions and it's widely believed that france and its foreign minister played the role of spoilers. there were reports that iran was prepared to suspend uranium enrichment at 20%, if so that would seemingly make it impossible for them to make a nuclear bomb but there's speculation the french foreign minister said that's not enough and demanded more. however, earlier today, u.s. secretary of state john kerry suggested that that was not the case, that the world powers were on the same page, that they had an agreement drafted and ready, and it was iran that balked it signing it. you get an idea how difficult these negotiations are, clearly a lot of iranians are disappointed, it's perhaps iranian people, carol, who would gain the most with an agreement

because it would probably help ease some of these crippling sanctions they've suffered through, through so many years. >> reza sayah reporting live from iran this morning. u.s. technology chief todd park has been subpoenaed to testify about the obama care fiasco to a house panel wednesday. if a group of technology experts with ties to the white house get their wish, he will not be testifying at all. they've actually launched this website with a simple message, let todd work. they say he should be working to fix the problem, not spending hours preparing to testify before the house oversight committee. they say this is a mess he did not make. this veterans day, restaurants and retailers across the country are saying thank you by offering big discounts to veterans and active duty military from breakfast to dinner, vets knowing where to go could save them big bucks. alison kosik is at the new york stock exchange to help them out. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, carol. vets can eat like a king or a queen all day today and in most

good morning. i'm carol costello. thank you so much for joining me. you're looking at live pictures or just about to from the new york stock exchange. this morning, before the opening bell rang, two minutes of silence to honor our veterans, also as you can see, ringing the bell this morning, the superintendent and members of the u.s. military academy at west point, joined by veterans in charge of companies like johnson & johnson, jpmorgan chase and footlocker. ac ross the country, companies are ramping up efforts to hire veterans. walmart announced it hired more than 20,000 veterans since memorial day. earlier the company pledged to add more than 100,000 veterans to their workforce and walmart is not alone in its efforts. starbucks and jpmorgan chase also pledging to hire or cater to veterans. spider marks retired general, is here to talk about that.

good morning, general. >> good morning, carol. >> you wanted to highlight what's happening on the new york stock exchange this morning. we can guess why this is a good thing. tell us from this perspective what is the significance in. >> first of all isn't it cool you've got the superintendent at west point, his first captain, great young lady, his command ant, cadets and all those veterans that are senior executives and some tremendous companies ringing the bell to open the trading day on veterans day. it's magnificent and what that really symbolizes is veterans concerned about veterans, and interested in hiring veterans. this isn't a charity. this isn't an outreach of some form of -- it's just a huge thank you on the part of these great executives to say look when you hire a veteran you're hiring an incredibly talented young man or woman or old man or woman, doesn't matter. what they bring to bear is leadership initiative and they're all finishers. you give them a task they'll finish the task.

they're competent, have character and magnificent contributors to the team. carol, very often in businesses they are looking for very specific skill sets and what happens is they look at veterans and they say i can't translate what you did in uniform to what i'm going to ask you to do in this company and that becomes a conundr conundrum, a challenge and as you can see today the hiring of veterans are, excuse me, the unemployment of veterans exceeds the national norm and the average. >> it sure does. we're going to get into that, general, because these are great pictures to see, good first steps but consider this, the government estimates more than 62,000 veterans are homeless on any given night, the unemployment rate as you said for post-9/11 veterans stands at 10%. 20% suffer from ptsd or depression, and according to the department of veterans affairs, every day 22 veterans take their own lives. that's a suicide almost every hour. general marks, i want to get your reaction to a viral video

that's highlighting these problems, especially veteran homelessness. it's already received more than 10 million hits on youtube, it was made by a non-profit group in michigan that helps homeless veterans and as you can see it shows a homeless alcoholic vet getting a makeover. let's watch for a second. ♪ ♪

♪ ♪ >> all right, we're going to continue to watch this, general, but as a leader of young men and women on the battlefield, when you watch this video, how does this make you feel? >> any veteran that's homeless is a tragedy for our nation. these guys have given tremendous, tremendous service to our nation, and they need to be given the ability to transition from this very seminal event of service to nation. there's nothing that replicates that and having the ability to make a transition back to their neighborhoods and their communities is extremely difficult to do.

you're never more fulfilled than you were when you were in uniform, you have a sense of purpose and direction and camaraderie and the bonds of love and sacrifice are in there forever. when you move and make the transition back to your communities it's exceptionally hard and starts with self-respect, it starts with confidence, from that opportunity comes and certainly there really is a partnership between business and our veterans administration, and great efforts are being made to address that. >> it just makes me wonder how we got to this point, those statistics are so disturbing. how did we let this problem grow so large? >> well it's staggering. first of all, we've been at war for ten years, over ten years, so we have a large number of young men and women that have made these sacrifices and are coming back into the workplace, so number one there's large numbers. number two, we've had an economy taverned, making a recovery and coming back. at the same time you have an increase in the number of veterans, a decrease in the number of opportunities, because businesses are struggling to try

to figure themselves out and again, this isn't a charity. businesses are affected by their return on investment, and i can tell you there's no finer return on investment than the hiring of a veteran and it's a matter of linking those two up, making information available and also businesses understand they get a good deal when they get a veteran on board. it just has to grow and going to take some time and there's no lack of effort on anybody's part to try to make this work. >> general "spider" marks thank you for your insight, we appreciate it this morning. >> thanks, carol. under intense criticism for a report on the benghazi attack, cbs' "60 minutes" issued an apology and retraction. lara logan had british security officer dylan davies who gave a riveting account saying he was there, he actually hit an al qaeda fight we are a rifle butt but last week the "new york times" reported davies told the fbi he did not go to that compound that night and he didn't, turned out he was lying.

16th, to be exact, and since then abc and jimmy kimmel have tried to make amends for this. abc apologized, they said the network would "never purposefully broadcast anything to upset the chinese community, asian community or anyone of chinese descent or any community at large." they have also made sure that the clip that you saw there isn't available through their platforms online, it won't be a part of any rebroadcast, but for his part as well, jimmy kimmel apologized on the air and he said he thought it was obvious that he didn't agree with the statement, but that he never intended to upset anyone. he did joke at the time that this was the "lord of the flies" edition of the kids table and last month he apologized directly to the protesters that were outside of his studio. this of course, carol, has not satisfied the protesters at this time, because they're still at it. >> wow. you wonder what do they want him to do? i mean i know they want him to be fired, is that what they want in the end? >> yes, i was going to say pretty much, they're calling for

clyde team has been arrested after a year-long spree of bank robberies in florida and alabama. the husband and wife team are suspected of stealing more than $50,000 and more than a dozen stick-ups. the couple has been under surveillance by the fbi. a state of national calamity, that's the declaration made by the president of the philippines, after a super typhoon slammed into the nation, killing at least 942 people, and wiping out hundreds of thousands of homes, businesses and more. relief efforts now under way as several groups including the u.s. marines local military and the united nations race to get food and water to shell-shocked residents. cnn's andrew stevens is in the city that took the brunt of the storm, tacloban. he joins us now. good morning, andrew. >> reporter: good morning, carol. yes i'm back at the airport. we got into this airport about 1 hours or so before the storm hit. we've just come back and you can see behind me just a fraction here of the devastation caused

at the airport, both to my right and to my left there are piles are debris everywhere. all the walls in the main building are blown out, the roof is virtually hanging off and a lot of people huddled here waiting for flights, planes to try to get out. that death toll number 942 people, that is expected to rise by a lot, carol, perhaps the number floating around at the moment are at least 10,000, just to give you an idea. now as i said we got in before the storm. we were hold up in a hotel right in the center of town, we weathered it there and this is what we experienced. [ wind howling ] this is what the inside of a super typhoon looks like. 250 clomer 250-kilometer-an hour slamming into the city, smashing windows,

tearing metal, water and flying debris. minutes after we finished our live shots telling headquarters we were moving to safer ground, the cameraman brad olson shot this in the place we just loeft. >> okay, guys, i think we can wrap it up. >> reporter: as the destruction there continued, a floor below, terrified residents huddled together finding protext against the flying spray and mind-numbing noise. some pray for their safety. >> reporter: it's a relatively secure area, i think, where we are. it's a substantial hotel. and we are away from windows. but all around us, you hear the sounds of windows breaking and hear the sounds of large

objects, falling and crashing to the floor. and under foot, it is now a deluge. and if you look behind me, the staircase behind me is now basically a water fall. >> reporter: and then a torrent of black water began pouring into the hotel. the storm surge had become. within a few minutes, it was at ground floor level. a panicked family now tracked in their room smashed the window and screamed for help. we managed to get the mother across to safety and it immediately became clear the cause of her panicment their daughter was severely disabled. storm chaser and i went back across to get the terrified girl to safety. and cnn producer tim schwartz helped rescue the rest the family. the waters only rose a little higher. the height of the storm, in fact, had passed. two hours later, the wins lost

their lethal strength. it was a ruined shell. but as we walked outside, it was immediately clear that so much of the city had suffered so much more than we had. gives you an idea of just the intensity of that weather system. one of the shorm chasers said to me afterwards, if there was a category 6 storm, that would have been it. >> andrew, the people you helped rescue in that hotel, do you know where they are now? >> reporter: well, we spoke to them at length afsds. they stayed in the hotel. they were local people. they had gone to the hotel for safety. that hotel we were at has now closed. it was pretty badly damaged as you saw there. that's been closed. there's no power, water or food. we went back a day or so later before it closed, and it really was a mess.

they, as far as i'm a wear, had gone back to their home. they had seen that i home and it wasn't too badly damgd. they're all okay. that's the main thing. we were lucky, they were lucky. and the devastation around the city particularly on the waterfront area is just complete. the big question here is why for the size of the storm it does seem to be a fairly low death toll at the moment. it's been very slow-moving, so far, the rescue, given the fact that it was difficult to get the rescue teams in here straightaway. ands in a big, big weather system. there are other towns and villages who would have experienced the same sort of conditions. we just don't know what's happened to them. >> andrew stevens, thanks so much. bay ton manning goes down, but will he be back up for the broncos next game? weekdays are for rising to the challenge.

>> the city of tacloban hit head on. and across the region, 942 confirmed dead. but officials fear that number or could go as high as 10,000. andrew stephens now from tab la ban. >> the rain has started and sat in quite heavily. adding more misery to the people who have lost their homes, lost everything. many of them have lost loved ones as well. the president has just declared it a national calamity, what happened here. let's have a look back over the events of the past few days. overnight, a weakened haiyan still carrying winds much more than 90 miles an hour battered the coast the north vietnam and southern china. just days after the typhoon

struck the philippines with apock that lip tick force. it smashed through cities and its close to 200 mile an hour winds and storm surge swept these gigantic ships onto land. a quarter of million people left homeless, and estimated 10,000 people died. the surge was waist deep was we rescued a family trapped in their hotel room. >> get international help to come here now. not tomorrow, now. this is really, really, like, bad, bad. worst than hell. >> reporter: the aftermath, a humanitarian crisis of enormous scope. they began the grim task of finding the dead in the rubble. >> it's horrific. great human tragedy. >> reporter: in this city,

haiyan ripped the roof from a building. >> i have not spoken to anyone who hasn't lost someone close to them. >> reporter: officials estimate that most of leyte island was damaged or destroyed. and in the hard-hit city of tacloban, storm victims with no food, shelter or water rushed to the demolished airport desperate for supplies. this city received a batch of rice and canned food sunday but delivering aid to the other remote communities are is huge challenge. key roads are impassable and communications severed. the only functioning medical facility can't admit any more patients. thousands breaking into grocery stores. and haiyan leaving an entire city on edge. it gives you an idea just the

extent of the damage. and that u.s. support couldn't come soon enough. what this country does lack is the ability to get a large amount of material out to places by air. and that's exactly what the u.s. can provide, that is what's needed. so expecting to see u.s. choppers on the tarmac in front of me fairly soon. and that would -- should signal the relief effort really kicking off into high gear. it's going to take a long time with the u.s. support and other country as well, virtually every country has been offering assistance in some form or another. that's what the president of the philippines told me yesterday. but it is going to take a long time before they get the situation under control, before those people, victims are fed. they've got adequate and clean water, and they've got somewhere to live. >> all right.

andr andrew, thanks so much. we continue our coverage this morning with cnn's ivan watson who takes us above the damage to show us the path of this monster storm. >> reporter: following the destructionti destructive path of the storm, the shattered city of tacloban could be described as ground zero. a seawall washed away the airport and leaving death in its path. >> five dead bodies rolled in a plastic. and most of them are drownings. >> reporter: next to the ruins of the terminal, desperate people line up for water. some residents warn of looting after the storm. >> is this just people trying or get food? >> no. i saw two people, three people, are carrying brand new refrigerators, brand new washing machines, motorcycles, brand new. you know, all of -- i mean

appliances. >> reporter: from the catastrophe in tacloban, we fly west. they're trying to assess damage to other filipino islands. >> i was 37 years in the air force. i've flown all over the country and i have been in storms before. but not to the extent this one put us into. >> reporter: record winds damaged the other towns we saw. but fortunately they did not face the devastating tsunami-like effects of the storm surge. the typhoon swept through here days ago and now the long, hard work of rebuilding has just begun. all of this damage was done in just a matter of hours. and nobody here really knows how long it will take to truly recover. but even in these less damaged

regions, locals are steel reeling. >> no water. and most badly we have no flight, no boat come in here. so we have no food. >> reporter: in a country accustomed to typhoons, one local man described super typhoon haiyan as a monster. ivan watson, cnn, tacloban, in the philippines. >> and tonight cnn's anderson cooper will be in manila for a close-up look at the destruction and how aid works and survivors are coming together. the politics of obama care and the problems continue. the latest is a ga, the plea to let todd work. a group of technology experts are showing support for u.s. technology chief todd park. he's working to fix the healthcare.gov website, but

republican council man wants to hear from him as of right now. jim kacosta is at the white house. >> reporter: you've heard awful this talk about kathleen sebelius the last couple of weeks. one name you have not heard is todd park. but that is going to change it week. first daryl issa said he wanted to hear from white house chief technology officer todd park. the white house first said no, park is too busy because he's working to fix the website. so they fired back with a subpoena on friday to force him to testify. the supporters of todd park started a website that is called let todd work. it says, quote, no matter what side of the aisle that you sit on, todd is within of the good

guys. let him do his job. now the top democrats on the committee that is chaired by issa are accusing him of selectively leaking documents on the obama troubles. and all this comes as this very kushl week is emerging for the obama administration. the administration is set to release its first set of obama karen roemt numbers sometime this week. when those numbers come out, we'll get a really big indication as to how many people have been able to sign up. all of that has been impacted by the big problems with the website. the battle is not over yet. >> on this veterans day, president obama is honoring america's war debt about an hour from now with a breathe laying at the tomb of the unknown. earlier this morning the president held a breakfast for

veterans and their families. also, hopes were high this weekend that a deal could be struck in geneva. but after a flurry i have diplomatic activity, it ended without an agreement. secretary of state john kerry disputed reports of disagreement among some of the foreign ministers. >> no agreement has been reached about the end-game here. that's the subject of the negotiation. the sanctions were put in place in order to bring about a negotiation. >> all parties will return to geneva in ten days to try again. still to come in the "newsroom," 555 feet of magnificent. the washington monument repairs are done. but not everyone is happy to see the scaffolding come down. erin mcpike, live in washington this morning.

it looks scary up there. but invigorating at the same time to some, i suppose. >> reporter: yes. it will take about three weeks to come down. now the earthquake that you mentioned from august 2011, that caused 150 cracks in the exterior of the washington monument. thieves been repairing that. and those repairs are now about 80% complete. they're going to continue to make repairs after the scaffolding comes down. the interior is about about 30% complete as far as that kind of reconstruction goes. but here's the thing. in washington, a lot of people have liked the view of the scaffolding because it lights up the monument at night. so the superintendent of the national mall put out a statement the other day, and said i know the decorative scaffolding is popular and will be missed, but we are excited that this brings us one step closer to re-opening the

monument as a historical and cultural icon. and they expect that the moment will re-open sometime in the spring of 2014. >> it does look kind of cool. especially when it's lit up at night. but i kind of miss the sim accomplicetive the monument. just the beautiful white pillar reaching into the sky. >> reporter: yeah. carol, the other thing about this is we're not done with scaffolding in washington. the capitol dome is about 150 years old. it hasn't undergone a full rehabilitation since 1950. so scaffolding going up on the dome in the next couple of months. and that kind of reconstruction will go on for the next two years. >> wow. well, we're glad the washington monument will open up soon. checking our top stories at 17 minutes past. the u.s. navy has suspended two
