late wednesday night he is taking a leave from congress after pleading guilty to possession of cocaine. >> i've let down our country. i've let down our constituents. i've let down my family. >> reporter: the freshman lawmaker says he is accepting responsibility for his actions. >> i have been getting the help that i need and i will continue to get the help that i need. >> reporter: federal agents arrested radel back in october during a drug sting. court documents say he bought 3 1/2 grams of cocaine from an undercover officer. radel calls his actions extremely irresponsible and says he has been struggling for addiction for years. >> i knew this day would come. i've been struggling with this but i've had my wake-up call. >> reporter: earlier on wednesday he was at washington, d.c. superior court where he

ignore questions from reporters. he was facing up to 180 days in prison. some are now calling for radel to step down. >> trey radel needs to resign right away. he commit a crime. members of congress are sworn to uphold the laws and not break them. >> reporter: >> reporter: the father of a 2-year-old son stopped short of resigning and is focused on rebuilding trust with his family. >> the first thing i need to do tonight it begin to mend that trust and relationship with my wife who is with me and will continue to stand with me, who i love, who is my rock. i'm going to hug my little guy. even if he is asleep tonight and i'm going to work to do everything i can to be strong, to come out as a better man. >> reporter: radel also said he would enter an intensify program to get help. >> i hope i can be a role model for millions of others that are

struggling with this disease. >> reporter: alina machado, cnn. the expectation of new headaches once the website gets fixed. a new plan seems to offer a narrow choice of doctors and hospitals. less than what people get through medicare or employer-based coverage. concerns are being already raised in some states and some hospitals have lodged complaints over the network issue. >> spying bombshelling from classified na documents and one memo dated in 2005 says the agency can spy on british citizens and citizens of america's cloes allies under specific circumstances and without their sent. this even though the english speaking countries have an official nonspying pact with each other.

another memo from 2007 says an agreement was reached between the u.s. and uk that allowed the nsa to unmask britain's personal better. to geneva and the talks between the west and iran over its nuclear program. the obama administration does not want to rush but the more time to strike a deal the more resistance from friends and foes alike. jim sciutto is live in geneva for us. what can you tell us? >> reporter: negotiators doing battle this morning at the bargaining table. the first significant meeting between the iran foreign minister and eu foreign policy, members of the eu team tell us this morning they are locked in tough negotiations. the senior administration officials have been talking to say, the west is unified now in their position. they have gotten over whatever disagreements broke up the last round of talks and up to the iranians. the u.s. officials are doing

their own round of management and including secretary of state john kerry. let's listen to what he had to say. >> we will not allow this agreement, should it be reached, and i say should it be reached, to buy time or to allow for the acceptance of an agreement that does not properly address our core fundamental concerns. >> reporter: the core fundamental concerns are about iran's enrichment of u rainian. the west appears comfortable to that with strict limitations and only certain levels well below grade but the question whether the iranians are willing to accept it in exchange for what is offered which is very mild relaxation of the sanctions regime, something in the billions of dollars and single digits according to administration officials.

the third round of talks here. they have gotten close before and we will see if they are able pull it off this time in 48 hours. >> how damaging are the talks with the relations with israel? iran supreme leader referring to israel as the war mongering rabid dog of the middle east and during a military speech to commanders. >> not very friendly words coming out of iran. i think that he was actually targeting those comments specifically at the israeli prime minister benjamin netanyahu who has done a very vocal personal campaign against any deal and he is in moscow lobbying the russians not to take part and that is a problem because it's coming out so much in public. you've heard very sharp disagreements between the israelis and the americans on this. american officials say that disagreement is tactical but a pretty big tactical green light here where the u.s.

administration appears to accept a deal under the circumstances the israeli not comfortable with. it's too important of a relationship between u.s. and israeli but rarely seen this disagreement between so public between the two countries. that's a problem. for a deal like this to work they need israeli on board, if not on board, at least not publicly lobbying against it which is what they are doing. >> jim sciutto live in geneva for us, thank you. another round of diplomacy going on in afghanistan. karzai to present a tribal deal to keep u.s. in afghanistan. afghanistan's zee must improve the deal and extend america's post combat presence well past the date of withdrawal for most forces in 2014. secretary of state kerry is saying the muslim brotherhood stole the leadership.

contrary told a meeting of multinational firms that the state department that the young people who protested in tahrir sqir were not driven by religion or ideology and he says the brotherhood appropriated the fight from them. now ousted president mohammed morsi is a member of the muslim brotherhood. the party is now banned in egypt. this is an interesting story. the army is facing criticism this morning over an internal e-mail advocating how to show women's roles in comment. the e-mail from a female colonel and it says that army p.r. materials should use photos of quote, average looking women, not pretty ones, because it says beauty shots undermine the message that women can do a tough job. this is all stemming from one apparently pr pamphlet that went out that showed a woman in combat and it appeared to have lipstick or makeup on and this army colonel was suggesting they

should show women in more realistic roles. >> maybe not pretty but prettied up? >> she sort of said both at the same time. the language has been criticized by members of congress now, created quite a discussion. >> i bet it has. >> one i'm way too scared to weigh in on. >> to partake in on. >> that's correct. let's get a check with the forecast with indra petersons. >> we are talking about snow on the west coast and that eventually impact us by this weekend. so pay attention. we are talking about a cold enough system to produce over a foot of snow today in colorado. also around wyoming and notice even a little bit left over towards mammoth. the system is making its way south and producing the snow and something else to notice on the back side of this out into the ocean in hawaii. the stream of moisture going towards the west coast. once we bring you in closer you see the moisture is coming out and then wrapping around this low. we are talking about heavy rain

possession. he told a reporter in an emotional news conference he has hit bottom and take a leave of absence to seek treatment. >> i have let down our country. i've let down our constituents. i've let down my family, including my wife and even though he doesn't know it, i've let down my 2-year-old son. i have been getting the help that i need and i will continue to get the help that i need and the support system that i need for years to come. >> radel is not stepping down to the disappointment of some who say that he should. radel was sentenced to a year of probation and fined $250. his word will be wiped clean so long as he stays out of trouble. it is not clear how long he will be absent from congress but radel plans to donate his salary to charity and he told the judge he will come out of this a stronger man. we are finding out more this morning about the stab of a prominent politician in

virginia. state senator creigh deeds continues to struggle after a fight that left him injured and his son dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. we know police went to deeds house a day before he was attacked. >> reporter: sources close to the investigation tell cnn gus deeds stabbed his father more than ten times just outside creigh deeds home as the senator stumbled down the drive bleeding his son went back into the house and shot himself. the incident happened after a day brought to the hospital. police confirm gus was brought by the sheriff and mental health professionals evaluated him there. a state official told the "the washington post" they called various hospitals to give him a bed with more stensive care but failing to find a spot they had to let him go. three hospitals, including this

one, all tell cnn they did have beds available and no one called. all are within an hour or two of the deeds. a further sign of a system many say is failing the mentally ill. virginia has struggled to expand mental health care since a disturbed student killed 33 people at virginia tech in 2007. >> the legislature funded next year 40 million in new services and 2010 the money was gone and eliminated in the recession. >> others say bench shortages are only an issue in rural areas like bath county. >> you have to make more calls than two. >> richard bonnie helped reform the state's mental health system. >> you think there should be alternatives to force hospitalization? >> you don't need to wait until people meet the commitment criteria. you have something to offer that they will accept and that family members, you know, will, you

this is really strange. an evacuation slide deployed inside the main cabin. it was mid flight. the plane had taken off from ft. myers heading for boston and had been in the air about 20 minutes when the unexpected happened. >> we heard a loud bang and we looked -- i saw people looking up towards the front. >> you hear this -- this noise. it sounded like almost the baggage top carrier came down. >> what is going on with all of these airplane stories. passengers say the inflated chute filled the entire front part of the compartment. it the plane landed safely and no reported injuries there. a jetblue spokesman say at no point did a door open. very important. the plane has been taken out of service and the airline says it's still too early to determine what went wrong there. >> crazy. all charges have been

dropped against two florida teens accused of bullying a 12-year-old who later killed hearses. the girls were charged last month with aggravated stalking. jose buy he'aez, the attorney f of the girls is demanding an apology. a crude online video game that allows players to re-enact the sandy hook school massacre is trig.ing outrage across the country. it is called the slaying of sandy hook elementary. in this online game, players collect a loaded gun, shoot their mother, then go on a killing spree at a school. connecticut senator richard blumenthal wants it banned from the web already. he calls it vile and shameful. the guy who created this the warped mind i call it what he is trying to do is highlight the

lack of gun laws in the united states. that's why he says he created that video game. >> it's so graphic, it's awful! 38 minutes after the hour. illinois has made it official. governor pat quinn signing legislation to make illinois the 16th state to legalize same-sex marriage. the new law changes the definition of marriage from an act between a man and woman between one between two people. seat belts will soon be mandatory on large buses. government rules take effect in november of 2016 require buses between cities and any new tour buses to have three-point lap shoulder belts and 21 people every year die in large bus crashes. i wanted to know when they are going to do that for school bus. >> soon. >> i hope so. indra petersons is here with a look at the weather. >> pretty much average temperatures but it changes as we go towards the weekend.
