upstairs in women's clothing. understandable. the first time ever macy's has been open on thanksgiving night. yesterday they opened at 8:00. i'm told that 15,000 people are waiting right outside to bust down those doors to come in for those deals. when you talk to customers inside macy's i'm getting a bit of mixed reviews. some people saying, yeah, they are ready for those people and got great deals. others were disappointed and didn't get as many great deals as we anticipated and said they wish they had stayed at home. i'm joining by two shoppers. this is your first time shopping on black friday. how has it been so far? >> it's a bit unexpected. i thought there would be a lot more people. i expected to see people trampleled and rushing through so i didn't see too many people so i thought it was a regular shopping day. >> you started at midnight.

any sleep at all last night? >> no, i have not had any sleep at all. >> what is it like in terms of deals? what are you seeing in terms of deals here? >> in this particular store, i didn't see that many deals. maybe on pants. i saw a lot but not too many deals. i thought i was going to be seeing a lot more. >> what is your plan for the rest of the weekend? are you doing more shopping? are you going to go online now? >> i'm probably going to go online but also go back to j. krchlt pc. p penney. they are having great sales so i will probably do that. >> thank you so much, guys. we are anticipating the store getting busier. macy's hired 3,000 seasonal workers for black friday. one piece of advice if you're out hunting for deals it's important you do not put getting a bargain or getting a deal ahead of your own safety. >> that's great advice.

thank you so much, zain. we appreciate it. shoppers may be seeing more than bargains today. protesters are planned at more than 1,500 walmart stores across the country. walmart workers are hoping to use black friday to draw attention to what they describe as low wages and retaliation against employees who criticize the company. protesters expect better turnout than last black friday when hundreds walked off the job in 46 states. groups advocating for walmart workers saying they made $7 billion in profits. they want more full-time job and minimum $25,000 a year salaries for those who seek it. some store owners and customers are unhappy about that have gone become so commercialized. new hampshire, the owner of a sears hometown store refused to open on the holiday. holly says the deals are the same on friday so there is no reason to rush.

welcome back to "early start." it's "money time."

alison kosik is here with all of the latest. good morning to you. >> good morning. we are talking stocks. it's a half day of trading today. trading is going to be wrapping up at 1:00 p.m. today. this is the last trading day of november. stock futures are sharm higher following a rally on wednesday. the markets were closed in the u.s. yesterday for thanksgiving. talk about this morning. all of the major averages are starting at record highs. a record 16,097 on the dow and 4,044 on the nasdaq and record 1807 on the s&p. unprecedented. and if history is any indicator, the rally that we are seeing happening here it could actually continue through the end of the year. they find that since 1945 the period between thanksgiving and new year's has shown an average 1. % gain and positive returns 71% of the time. but whatever the case, investors have had quite a year so far. the dow is up 23% since the beginning of the year. the nasdaq is up 34% and the s&p

500 up 27%. so don't be afraid to look at your portfolio if you're invested in the markets. but caution about the economy still seems to be the theme in a new cnn/orc poll conducted in november, overall 59% say that things are going badly in the country. that's a number that has been steadily rising since pip. only 41% believe it is going well. 39% feel the economy is still in a downturn. only 24% believe that an economic recovery is under way. 36% are kind of caught in the middle and don't think we are in a recovery but they believe conditions have stabilized. so not very optimistic on this black friday but no matter how they feel about the economy, many shoppers, they decided to eat and run on thanksgiving. you look across the country. door buster sales drew in crowds. 140 million people expected to shop this weekend and last year
