could this visit mean? we are live in rome with the very latest this morning. good morning, everyone. hope you had a wonderful thanksgiving weekend. welcome to "early start." i'm john berman. >> i felt like i haven't seen you in weeks. welcome back. >> i'm glad to be back. >> i'm zoraida sambolin. it is 5:00 a.m. in the east on december 2nd. so many questions on what caused that deadly train redetailment in new york city. the pictures are stunning. four people were killed and 67 others injured and 11 critical when this metro north train went careening off the tracks sunday morning. the ntsb is investigating and will no doubt be looking at speed and brake failure as two possible causes. this morning, metro north has started the process of upriding these train cars which you can see laying on their side right now. cnn's alexander field is live in

the bronx in new york. what is the latest? >> reporter: they are trying to right side the train cars and starting in the back of the train where the locomotive was and lift up the other subsequent cars. overnight we learned the names of the victims killed in this trash. they are the following. we are hearing from the survivors, passengers on board that train and they are telling us about the terrifying moments of when the train stopped short of the harlem river. >> i thought i'm going to die. >> i hurt my arm. >> i heard hearing crunching and grinding and saw stars in front of my eyes and thought, my goodness, is this the end? >> i heard a screeching noise. i'm on top of the hill but still heard a screeching noise. within seconds, the blans and

fi ambulance and fire trucks past my window. >> i wasn't anything in particular and all of a sudden the train felt a little more sideways than it should be. by the time i looked up, it was completely going off its track and there was like the rubble from under the tracks like flying. >> reporter: the ntsb has been investigating through the night and have covered the train's data recorders and look for any other recordings which could lead them to a cause of this crash opinion here is how the ntsb says the investigation will move forward from here. >> there will be a track team which will look at the condition of the tracks leading to the point of derailment. try to identify any anomalies. there will be a signals team looking at the condition of the signaling system and hopefully, looking for any possible data that might have been recorded by the signaling system. human performance team will be looking at the performance of the train crew.

>> reporter: investigators will also be looking at the train speed. they expect to be out here for the next seven to ten days. obviously, service is disrupted on this part of metro north's hudson line this morning. buses are being brought in to help with the commute. >> no doubt. thousands and thousands of people will have their commute disrupted this morning but the focus is on this accident and what caused it. alexander, any history of other problems on tracks anywhere near this location? >> reporter: we know, john, just 1,700 feet away in july a freight train derailed ten cars hauling garbage tipped over. that is something being razed out here right now. investigators will use that derailment and this derailment and see if there is any possible link here. >> alexander, appreciate you being there. thank you. night and day. that is how the main obama care website fixer upper described the difference between healthcare.gov now and when it launched back on october 1st.

the nuclear power would help the country reduce its carbon emissions and consumption of oil and says iran should produce 150 tons of nuclear fuel to produce five power plants. so syria now. the bloodshed in the civil war. dozens of people were killed when syrian aircraft barrel bombed a town over the weekend. frederik pleitgen is following the developments for us. he is live in that nation's capital damascus. what is the latest this morning, fred? >> reporter: this apparently happened both on saturday and on sunday with these barrel bombs that can drop from helicopters and one incident apparently they hit a market in the second incident hit a bakery. in total it appears more than 50 tied and all of this happened in the north of the country but this has been a deadly weekend in syria. attacks north in the country and fresh attacks here close to the damascus area.

a town called malula and one of the ancient christian towns in the world and where they say jesus christ spoke and has actually spoken and invaded by rebels this weekend. the civil war keeps dragging on and getting worse by the day. >> in a word of this escalation and the violence coming there as we are hearing the united states could play a crucial role now in destroying syria's chemical weapons. >> reporter: yeah. absolutely. the united states has apparently agreed to destroy these chemical weapons at sea on an american ship that is being outfitted with special technology. the syrians have agreed to this as well. i spoke to high level syrian official and they say they are totally okay with that. the big question how are we going to get the chemical weapons through syria with the violence going on to bring this to this american ship? the syrians will not let this u.s. ship dock in syria. other countries apparently agreed to use their own ships to

bring the chemicals there. it looks it's shaping up but big logistic concerns with the violence going on here and a lot of the roads being closed due to fighting. >> frederik pleitgen, thanks so much. ice covered roads are being blamed for a series of highway crashes in central and western massachusetts, including this 65-car pileup in worcester. the crash sent dozens to area hospitals. two people are said to be seriously injured and one family reported their dog was killed after their vehicle was rear-ended several times. >> i drove through this area about two hours after the crash right there. nothing was moving. i i didn't drive through. i drove around it because it was absolutely gridlock. our sympathies to the families who were hurt there. a check here with the weather today. indra petersons is here. >> good morning. it's nice and mild out this morning. we are loving this a couple of

days because we are in between systems. a huge chunk of the country looking pretty mild, at least for a day before big changes start to move on in. very easy this is a waert vapor satellite. waves moving through the southeast. obvious in the pacific northwest. the southeast get light rain but not a big deal but extra cloudy conditions. the upside it's warm. talking about temperatures good above normal. look at memphis and seeing 70s by wednesday. i do want to point out look at the difference as you go backwards. start to see the temperatures drop by the middle to the end of the week. there is a reason for that. a big system out in the pacific northwest but first starting with the east coast. a low making up the east coast and staying offshore this time and not giving us any rain or snow and means the temperatures are kind of going up over the next several days. we like this. temperatures above normal but this is all going to change. a huge snow maker out in the pacific northwest which means temperatures going way down. >> good with the bad? she delivers is all with a smile. thank you.

heading to the vatican. ben wedeman is live in rome and has more details for us. i was reading, at first, they were scheduled to meet last month, except the pope knew nothing about that meeting. >> reporter: well, actually, what happened was in last october, in netanyahu's office announced that netanyahu would be meeting with the pope when he came here to a trip back then, but red-faced the office of the prime minister had to retract that announcement because the vatican said no such meeting had been scheduled. this time there is indeed a meeting going ahead and it should have started at the top of this past hour and we are expecting they will talk about a variety of issues. of course, the israeli/palestinian conflict, but also the recently signed agreement between iran and world powers about its nuclear program and, of course, prime minister netanyahu has not wasted a moment to object and not wasted an opportunity to object to that

morning. the ntsb investigators have recovered on so-called event recorders from a metro north commute train. that may help determine the cause of the deadly derailment in new york city. four passengers were killed. 67 others were injured when that train jumped the tracks just outside of a station in the bronx. this morning, metro north is beginning the process of getting those train cars upright. cnn's alexander field is live for us at the accident scene in the bronx. what can you tell us? >> reporter: the cranes are in place and crews are in place. they had to wait for the okay from the ntsb investigators. they will begin with the locomotive and work toward reaching the other seven subsequent cars and the process should last into the morning. overnight we learned the names of the four passengers killed aboard that train. they are the following. we are also hearing this morning from the survivors of this

welcome back to "early start." overseas. ukraine is in exploding. look at this. hundreds of thousands of protesters calling for the country's president to resign after the government rejected political and trade deals with the european union. cnn's phil black is live there this morning. give us a sense what is happening there today, phil. >> reporter: sure, john. yes, so this started as a result of the ukrainian government not signing those political and trade deals you mentioned but escalated to something much more than that. behind me in independence square a crowd of thousands people already today and it is growing and expected to grow further into very big numbers as we saw

over the weekend. on sunday here, there was a crowd of well over a hundred thousand people filling this square. the protesters started over a week ago. what has really changed the level of force and violence used by ukrainian police and services to clear out some of the protesters and that has triggered a wave of public anger. the numbers of people on the streets has escalated dramatically and they are no longer just calling for the government to sign these trade deals, they are now calling for revolution. they want a change of government here because they believe the nature of the government is responsible for the problems that they believe can only be solved by pursuing a european pact for this country. already today, thousands of people behind me filling this square, braving rain and bitterly cold temperatures and snow as well.
