tries to send up moisture and humidity over the top of this cold air. we will get an ice storm throughout central part of the plains where it will be 30 degrees and raining. we say how are you going to do that? it will be 50 degrees aloft or 40 up in the sky. 5,000 feet. it's going to rain, but rain where it's 30. 31, 32 degrees. a little bit of snow in oklahoma city. this is not a snow maker. this is an ice machine for memphis and little rock and evansville. st. louis some snow, but the story is this ice sticking to everything. trees and power lines and millions of people will be without power. when it gets to new york into the east coast, it runs out of moisture. that's some good news. we won't put down the power lines. the central part of the country is in for it. this will get ugly fast.

kids will be stuck at school if we don't watch. by tomorrow it will be an ice rink into dallas and little rock and a lot of snow just to the north of there. >> there is more storms behind this one? >> another could affect parts of washington, d.c. for sunday night kind of arena. here's the deal. the warm air is in place in dallas. the warm air will be in place in d.c. the cold air under cuts and tries to rain through. if you are on this part of the storm you will get freezing rain and sleet. it's the stuff that comes down and freezes on the ground. it covers everything up. if you are further where it's thick and cold, it will be an ice pellet. further north of there, that will be snow. not for a long time, but can you imagine even five or six hours of slightly icy conditions on a sunday night? that would slow everything to a stop. >> nort today.

thanks very much. almost a year since a gunman killed 20 children six staffers. 911 recordings have been made public and they reveal ordinary people doing their best to save lives. this network has been playing careful about playing portions of the recordings. you heard these tapes. what stood out to you? >> one of the things that clearly stands out is how dispatchers responded. they were professional and they were training and it really kicked in. he notified his supervisor immediately and he had all police officers respond. get everybody you can going down there. make contact with somebody in the school and acts about the situation. the lockdown is in lockdown. people what he calls defending and place. a colleague notified the state police. this is happening very, very

quickly within a matter of successes. he was able to assess the situation and get the parts moving to save as many people as they could. >> one of the calls was made by the custodian. >> this man who was called a hero became the eyes and the ears of the dispatcher. he was in a different part of the school building away from the children and, way from the gunmen. he was able to tell the dispatcher what he was hearing when there was silence and show the dispatcher and when people passed through the window. those are the responding officers and even anderson makes contact with the responding officers who confront him and the dispatcher said he was a custodian and he was able to relay information including the fact that the police were on the

way and also that there were victims. it happened very quickly. those calls show a certain fear or urgencey and a level of calm to do what had to be done to save the kids. >> there was obviously no easy answer to the question of whether to play all, some, or none of the recordings. none of this is easy for news organizations. the very least, it's worth talking about with media professionals and parents. this is obviously a difficult decision. news companies around the companies have been wrestling with this. where do you come down on this? >> they should be released and they should be available to make a news judgment about whether we should play them or not. >> i agree with your decision. >> i didn't hear anything in the tapes that advanced the story a great deal. certainly the 911 operators behaved professionally and the

custodian was a very responsible person reporting it. there is really nothing in the story that changes our understanding of what happened. i didn't really see the news value. >> i agree and i have seen a few of them and seen written reports of some of them. it ark peers that the police reacted very, very fast and were on the scene within four minutes. the news value issue i believe has been laid to rest. it's not massively news worthy. beyond that it's a matter of taste. we are grappling with something we could make the case for playing journalistically. let's be clear. we may be accused of hypocrisy. this one i believe is a matter of taste. >> the other point that is so obvious, this is 2013. these tapes are all over the internet. if people want to hear them, they can hear them. it's not like we are denying.

>> where do you come down on this? >> i don't think there is a problem to air them, but the families should not listen to them. people would be traumatized. we should not go to newtown, but find ways to be respectful, but keep telling and retelling and refining the story. this is not the first time this type of thing has happened. it caused us to cross into a zone i never imagined they would get into. we must continue to illuminate every aspect because nothing changed since this happened. that's where the obligations lie. >> part of my thinking and i think as a staff, our discussion was there is this experience and there experience people who don't believe this happened. it's so absurd and these tapes are yet obviously -- even trying to convince these people --

>> it's so absurd. there were experience theories around 9/11. >> i am trying to convince these people it's ridiculous. >> it's worth remembering that yes, indeed the 9/11 911 tapes were played, but in 2006. they fought the release of the tapes. new york is not legally bound to make them public. when they did release them, you didn't hear the voices of those who perished. >> it's not even so much that you are hearing -- you are not hearing anything horrific on the tapes. it's the knowledge of what is occurring in the listener's mind that makes them chilling. >> compared to some 911 tapes we have heard played on the air, they are not as horrific as -- there is no one who died and no one who died with the voices on the tape. you can't hear children in the background. it's not that the tapes are so inflammatory or horrible, but

they are representative of an event that is probably the worst american public crime since 9/11. >> i think some of them are pretty desperate and it's hard to listen to. i only listened to a very few of them. trying to make a judgment to use them. if people hear them, they will be very, very upset. some local stations in connecticut will not be airing them. many will be. it's really important i think as dr. drew said as well. this will bring up a set of emotions and maybe -- i'm conflicted. maybe it should bring up a set of emotions that forces something to change on this issue. >> respectfully to all of us, the public is really not that concerned with the nuance of journalistic choice making. they are concerned with the story. the story and never letting this

happen again and never forgetting it. why are we moving forward? why can't we take this story and make real change? >> that's true. one of my reasons if we ever did air them would be and i know this is maybe not even journalistically cool to say so, but to try to put this in the public to see whether it changes people's opinions. there were lots of promises made in the aftermath. that's an appalling way to be right. >> i disagree a little bit. i'm not sure it's our job to push change. >> it's not about pushing change. >> to say we want the laws to go one way or the other. >> i feel like it's my job. i feel like i see something very wrong here that from my perspective, mental health provider can't intervene effectively and that's why a lot of these things happened.

there needs to be procedures that allows the people who know the difference to do their job. >> i want to give you a different set of facts when we were covering bosnia. i used to be infuriated when editors would say that such and such piece of video cannot be played because it's just too gruesome. i said hang on a second. that's the reality. by telling our stories, it did in the end change the reality and it changed the action and intervention and move the story along. i am deeply conflicted about this. it's a matter of safety and helping the families. >> you can make the argument that you don't want to hear them and a program doesn't want to play them and it's not going to. that there is the right to have them be released.

you don't want the government holding on and hiding whatever it may be. >> that's an important principal and i thought it was wrong that the state's attorney on behalf of the family fought the release and the judge who decided the case did it right. >> you understand why they fight the families. >> the officials should honor the law. i think they are handling it 137b8ly and it shouldn't be up to the government to pick and choose what they disclose. it should be up to journalists to decide. >> and up to people. >> we have many platforms. these will probably be put online. people can go and listen if they like. where the families are not forced to be traumatized at this time with this. maybe in a few years like the 9/11 tapes, they might be put on the air. >> it's a difficult discussion. good to have you on.

breaking news out of mexico. authorities located a stolen truck with radioactive material. what is not known timt is if all of the material has been recovered. if terrorists could get their hands on it, they could use it to make a dirty bomb. what do we know about this? >> here's what we have got at this hour. coming from the director of mexico's national committee and the truck that was stolen on monday has been found north of the mexico city. the container which contained the cobalt 60 was not on the truck when it was found, but it was found about a half mile away. a key piece of information, the container according to this gentlemen did have cobalt 60

inside of it, but it's not clear if they have been able to recover all of the cobalt 60. that container was found open and cobalt was found inside, but it is not clear if all of it has been recovered. we believe they are still working on the information. still working the area where radiation has been detected. they are sent in to examine the area. >> do you know why this happened? it was randomly stolen and not targete targeted. >> it was not clear if they knew that cobalt 60 was inside it. the reason it was intercepted is because it was transported from a hospital to this nuclear agency.

this was early monday morning. >> it's not clear for people who had cargo talked more about the intentional use of this was the former officer. it's unclear if all the radioactive materials have been recovered. if somebody did get their hands on this, how difficult is it to use this stuff and make a bomb? >> it's a homemade ex-closive and they put it on the truck and let's say you have 100 pounds of this and 2,000 pounds of exclusives.

it's closed for two years. the casualty rates for the first 24 hours before 500 people will ob that 20 times after that. >> how well-equipped are authorities in the united states to handle a situation like this? a scenario like this. hazmat teams going through training. are we ready for this? >> you can get this stuff across from tunnels. if somebody was well-organized and as far as making the exclusives, it's easy to do, but not much we can do about it. with the chaos in mexico and the ability to grab this stuff scares people and it rightly shchl they are doing the best they can. the border crossings are monitored, but the tunnels are not. part the united states

instituted stricter rules about protecting isotopes like this, but in terms of regulating them, if other countries are not as visual, that's a major problem. >> you are absolutely right. it's harder to do with mexico and the cartel s to get at the sources of this and steal it and give it to al qaeda or narco terrorism it's wide open and it scares people for good reason. >> obviously you sort of talked about how it's made. that information that is available on the internet. it's not as if you are telling a secret you shouldn't be saying. >> no. people know this. it's all over the internet. most of these things are. these people know and want you to follow-up. we do not know all that was in that container. the authorities are looking into that.

ford to buy it back. they described gang members talking about the mayor's drug habit. this is one of the alleged drug dealer who is said rob ford wants some drugs said one man on the tape. we have pictures of rob ford on the pipe. it is compelling with the author of crazytown on the story from the beginning. robin, these wire tap summaries you obtained, they seem to show mayor ford trying to 53 the infamous tape from the transcript. it's from a gang member and a guy who was talking to a fellow gang member about what ford offered him for the video and he said yeah, he, meaning ford, said i will give you 5,000 and a car. what the f is that? this is crazy stuff. what do you make of the transcripts? >> what's happened here if you end up with these allegations

haven't been proven in court, but they chose to associate with a gang that happened to be under heavy surveillance and wire tapped and they are talking about selling crack here in toronto. they are hearing about this case that the mayor seems to frequent and somewhere along the line they noticed that these guys are talking to the toronto star and trying to sell a video of him smoking crack. throughout the tapes, you can hear them talking about and taking photos of him and threatening him. the mayor lot of his phone at one of the crackhouses and they are trying to buy that. one of his associates allegedly threatened to reign down on the neighborhood if he can return the phone. it's a crazy story and involves

a kidnapping. >> how does the mayor each get linked up with a violent drug gang? who makes that introduction? is that clear yet? how does he start hanging out with a drug gang whether or not he is buying crack or not. >> this is a certain area and his home is about ten minutes away from the complex and his older sister is a former rather than addict and he has issues in his family. i guess it's a small world, but i think if you believe the mayor, he had unlucky moves.

they are one of the largest wire stabbing investigations over the years. they are trying to extoerd him. he is not hanging out with a great group of folks. they show drug dealers talking about the mayor's alleged drug use. one said rob ford wants drugs. another said the mayor of the city, rob ford, was smoking his rocks today. they said they had pictures on the pipe. has the mayor responded to this? this is not the mayor talking. these are people involved in the drug trade. i guess you have to take them with a grain of salt. >> what's interesting is that there is a clear motive and they

can collect that and get the get out of jail free card. they have evidence of him and they know they like him. we like him a lot. it's a completely bizarre story and he said he might have smoked crack once. the lawyer was at city hall and he hasn't responded to these at all. if he's making payoffs, that's going to weigh heavily on anybody in terms of being able to function at your job and being extorted. i also understand and this i find confusing. the cell phone video ford allegedly smoking crack. i have seen a report that it is believed there is possible low a murder somehow wrapped up in this?

there is a picture that the man on the left is murdered because of the video? >> this is complicated and this man was killed days before the initial dealer called me saying they had this video. that person or man after the video was published the. they were telling each other that they received calls they believe anthony smith was killed because of the video that was on his phone. that was a motive for murder. it didn't appear that that is the case. they are adamant that that is not the case. this guy was fill and what is significant that members of the mayor of toronto believe this

until the end. the loss is still incredibly raw, but her mom and sister said they were ready to talk and they created a fund to help other kids with cancer. >> how are you holding up? >> we had a rough week and we are holding up basically due to all of the distraction. it's coming in waves. it's the worst thing that we have had to deal with and we are trying to take the positive and move forward. that's what olivia would have wanted. >> what do you want people to know about olivia? the people who feel like they met her because of seeing her sing, her spirit and strength is what impacted so many people.

>> have always known she was special and now the world is seeing you how special she really s. olivia showed us such strength and courage and wont thing we would like the world to know is it's important to follow your dreams and olivia never gave up fighting for her dream. she was in school until august. still planning to do all the things she wanted to do. she rarely succumbed to negativity and she was fighting each day and saw the beauty in each day. such a beautiful young woman. we are so proud of her. >> like my mom said, her whole life, she was always something special. her personality and there is nobody like her.

she is quite special and it's great to see how talented she was. she loved singing her whole life. she was in plays at school and wrote her song when she was 11 years old. that's crazy. what 11-year-old writes a song. >> some daals can't write a song. what did you think or what did she think when it got so many hits and people. >> she couldn't believe it. she said i can't believe it. we are like you are famous. 200,000, 300,000. she was excited. >> to have katy perry respond to her. >> that was a dream. >> it shows how special she is that she can touch katy perry. >> the people that reached out, it was amazing.

we are so grateful for katy perry for answering us. i'm sure there so many people and children that want to reach her and we are glad olivia made that impact. i have a brother who died when he was 21 and i have no video of him talking. as the years have gone by, i can't remember his voice and to have it on tape t has to be a powerful thing. >> i'm having goose bumps because that was one of my biggest fears. for technology and to have her voice and all the pictures and the videos and the things that we have even from when she was younger. i'm so grateful. >> is it too painful to watch them or do you watch them? >> i watch them. we have a rule. she doesn't want me to watch them at night before bed.

it's hard. i feel like i know she would want us to watch them and enjoy them and she would always say to me, mommy, you have to be strong. you have other kids. i keep hearing what she said to me. really she just is propelling us forward with this whole live wise fund. >> even when she got the diagnosis, she remained strong in the face of this. >> she did. she rarely had times of being down. >> rarely complained. i can't remember her complaining at all to me at least. she was always so positive. she wouldn't want us to cry. she said don't be sad. she wanted us all to be happy and enjoy our time together. >> you mentioned the live wise fund. explain what it is for people who don't know. >> we started a fund a couple months ago and her name to raise money for brain cancer research.

time for the ridiculous. a story from thanksgiving night where 911 dispatchers took what she thought had to be a prank call. >> i was just robbed at gunpoint right there. i was wa uking to a friend of mine's house for thanksgiving and just now they took my turkey and a bag of stuff. >> they took your turkey? >> yeah, they took my turkey.

>> nine times out of when they said i took my turkey it is a prank call. this 911 caller persisted. >> i was talking to a friend of mine's house because i was going to make my turkey at their house with some three-bean casserole because my oven doesn't work. >> it was for real. a man named jimmy mulligan was robbed of his turkey and side dishes on thanksgiving of all days. they left him without a turkey. once he convinced the dispap every it was for real, a police officer showed up at his house. >> i come downstairs thinking he found the two suspects and got my turkey and he gets out of the car with two boston market dinners for me and my friend. >> i love boston market. maybe i am still emotional, but i don't know if i can take this. the police officer brought thanksgiving dinner for jimy and his friend. there is more. it was the 911 dispatcher

working on thanksgiving who took up a collection at the call center and ordered the dinners from boston market because she felt bad for jimmy. that is incredibly touching. when you take into account what the operators have to deal with. you have seen the ridiculous before, you know the turkey-related 911 calls are usually more like this one. >> i'm at grateful deli and i specifically asked for little turkey and little ham and a lot of cheese and a lot of mayo nay and they are giving me a hard time. this woman stopped by and i was wondering if you can just -- >> you are calling 911 because you don't like the way they are making your sandwich some. >> exactly. >> then don't buy it. >> words of wisdom. >> final low we have a food centric 911 call and the victim
