6:01 pm
back. >> it's been a few months since we last sat down. a heart wrenching interview i did with you and your wife kay. it touched a nerve with so many people, to have somebody's whose job on a daily basis is comforting somebody else. >> yeah. >> to have this awful tragedy of the suicide of your son hit you as a family. >> yeah, resinated with people. how are you coping, since i lost spoke to you as a family? >> well, i'm doing the same things we talked about in that interview. i'm spending a lot of time not just with friends who support me but also in solitude, in prayer, in thinking in grieving, and when i feel an emotion, i let it out. if you shake up a coke bottle and don't let it out, it will come outside ways and grief is actually a good thing. it helps us get through the transitions of life. it helps us make through the difficulties and so, what i've
6:02 pm
actually been spending a lot of time doing lately is helping other people because when we did that interview, people who either had a family member who was mentally ill or had family member whose taken their life, came out of the wood work, and either following me on facebook or twitter or instagram or e-mails, all of a sudden, both kay and i have received, and i'm not exaggerating tens of thousands of letters, calls and notes from i get it. i know what you're going through. and many times, i don't have an answer for these people. it's just, i understand. i understand. i understand what you're going through. >> there was one question that many people i think were fascinated by your answer to, and there's a member of the audience who has a question for you, which i think touches on the same thing. bonnie smith, what's your question for rick warren? >> i had a child that passed away, and it's been 36 years, and i've accepted it as much as
6:03 pm
i can, and i'm living a normal life now but my struggle is trying to, again, get peace with myself for why, why did this happen to me? why when you hear so many times, piers said it many times on his show, that's the worst thing that could ever happen to anybody. >> yeah. >> and it did happen. i have to live with it, but i somehow want to come to peace with why so i can put that aside, and i haven't been able to. >> rick, i suppose the general question on the back of that is how can a loving god. >> right. >> put people through such terrible pain of taking a child away? >> yeah. well, again, as i said, you know, it would be very easy for god to remove all the evil in the world, take away my freedom to do it and your freedom to do it. he could make us puppets to always dot right thing, but we don't. he gave us this freedom because
6:04 pm
god wants people to genuinely love him. it isn't love unless you have the freedom to not love. in other words, if i'm forced to love you, it's not real love. so i have to have a choice. so while god is not the author of evil, the bible says god cannot do evil, one day will destroy evil, in the meantime, god is allowing this choice and evening on this planet is broken by evil. broken by sin. our bodies are broken. they don't work perfectly. the weather is broken. the economy is broken. every marriage is broken. nothing is perfect on this planet. we shouldn't expect it. that's why we pray i will be done on earth as in heaven because in heaven god's will is done per if he cannily. on earth it's done rarely. that's why we prayer god thy will be done on earth as in heaven. now, if we're looking for the answer to the question why in order to feel good, even if you
6:05 pm
know why, it's not going to take away your pain. so stop asking why. you see, if kay were to drop dead tomorrow and i were to know the reason why, it wouldn't make it any less painful. explanations never comfort. god specializes in turning curse fictions into resurrections. he specializes in bringing good out of bad. anybody can bring good out of good. god specializes in bringing good out of bad. i can see how god brought good out of the terrible badness of my son's suicide. it's made me more sensitive. i'm much more sensitized to people's pain. >> are you a better pastor do you think because -- >> without a doubt. >> because of the steering agony you've had -- >> without a doubt. if you study anybody whose used greatly, you go through pain. it's pain that actually sense sizes. in fact, i won't hire anyone on
6:06 pm
my staff who hasn't gone through major pain. i do this because if you've never gone through major pain, then you tend to -- when people are in pain, your attitude well get over it. it's insensitive. buck up, do better and you're going, you have no idea. you have no idea. it is humanizing. it is -- it humbles you. and so the changes that take place in you are what i call -- the bible calls it sant fa case but when i come more like christ in attitude more love, more joy, more peace, more patience, more kindness, these are kings that come through brokenness. >> let me play a clip of kay talking in the interview we did together about matthew and the issue of guns and mental illness. >> when did you finally get -- >> a month before -- before he took his life. >> do you know how he got it? who he got it from? >> he told me that he -- he told me everything. and he told me that he had found
6:07 pm
somebody finally on the internet who would sell it to him and it had to be super incrypted and it had to be this whole process and he begged me to help him because he couldn't figure out the process. again, there is so many, so many moments on terrible choices with mental illness. >> i mean, even since then we've seen other incidents, the naval yard shooting. >> yeah. >> the suicide, the virginia senator creed deed s and so on. a lot of incidents, always come back it seems to this lethal cocktail of wemental illness an availability of guns. nobody seems to be tackling this. how do we get to grips with this? >> the reason it's hard to tackle, there are so many guns out there. in the first place, there are almost as many guns in america as people, 300 million or something plus guns. i don't -- i can't see any foreseeable future. we'll be able to pull those back
6:08 pm
from law-abiding citizens. in the first place, the constitution allows them to have it. but while i may not be able to do everything, what can we do to keep guns out of the hands of mentally ill people? i don't care whether you're conservative or liberal or anywhere in between. everybody will agree, guns do not belong in the hands of mentally ill people. >> what does it say about a great country like america, the great super power of the world, here we are a year after 20 elementary school children were literally blown to pieces in their classrooms and the president stood there a few days later and said i will take action. here we are a year later and absolutely nothing has been done, nothing. >> yeah. >> no background checks brought in. no ban on assault weapons, no ban on high capacity magazines, nobody in washington has done anything to try to prevent this happening again. what does that tell you about the state of the debate about
6:09 pm
this, never mind anything else? >> yeah, i don't know -- i don't know how they are going to attack it politically. i do know as a pastor, i have to attack it anyway i can. and one of the ways that i can do it is deal with the mental illness area. why are there so many people mentally ill out there not getting the help they need? we have since the regan administration, the number of facilities, the beds for mentally ill people has dropped -- i wouldn't give the statistic but ten-fold easily. >> which is scandalous. >> it is. if you care about homeless people, you have to care about mental illness. if you care about police people dealing with people on the streets, then you got to care about mental illness because a lot of those crimes are committed by mental illness. if you care about vets returning
6:10 pm
home from war, you have to care about mental illness because many are dealing with posttraumatic stress syndrome. mental illness touches into far more areas than simply that person is crazy. right now whose caring for them is the families. we talked about this before. there is not enough support of families more mentally ill because to care for the individual rights of privacy. i had a son who my son gave me permission to talk to the doctors about his mental illness and gave caper mission and the doctors wouldn't talk to us for fear of lawsuits. and i'm going, now that's just wrong. we have to somehow give the tools to the mentally ill people. all those people mentally ill out there with guns, somebody is a parent to those people. those parents are probably thrown up their hands going i have no support, no resources and so i think we've got to hit it on four or five different angles.
