together and support one another and remember the beautiful things that all of their children and those six educators did. you know, i vividly remember the memorial that was built on the corner in sandy hook. angels hung on the tree as snow fell in newtown days before christmas. and the fact that this community said we will not be defined by the shooter. we will be defined by who we are and by the beautiful lives that were lost. i want to take a moment. let's pause and watch the president and first lady as they honor those victims.

>> president obama and first lady in the map room of the white house lighting 26 candles to honor the 20 children and 6 adults killed one year ago today at sandy hook elementary school in newtown, connecticut. we were speaking with poppy harlow who was in newtown for several days after the tragedy.

poppy, we saw a portion of the special that will air tonight on cnn. you were just about to say that everyone is grieving in their own way and some of the parents have chosen to remember their children through activism and political action. >> reporter: yeah, absolutely. everyone in their own way, that is why they are asking for the privacy today for us and not to be there with cameras. they are grieving in their own way. we have seen families come forward fighting for tougher federal gun legislation. we have seen sweeping legislation in connecticut following the tragic shooting, but not on a federal level. i have spoken with parents there. different community members who formed the newtown action alliance and fighting for change. i spoke with one of the fathers in newtown, not who lost a child, but has a child in newtown. he is on the foundation and action alliance. he says we will continue this

fight. we believe there needs to be change. this morning, in the president's address, he said from the very beginning our efforts were led by the parents of newtown. men and women and possibly brave who stepped forward in the hope these might spare others their heart break. possibly brave. that really sums up what this entire community is and possibly brave. we wish them peace and comfort today. >> i remember seeing that people were sending 26 angels as you mentioned and 26 wreaths and 26 teddy bears because people across the country, christi, you remember this, you were on the desk at the time the news broke, wanted to do something. >> one of the great things, too, to get your kids involved. get your kids to make snow flakes and send to the school. it was frightening for kids.

at home and don't buy anything. >> i look at car sales that have been great. economists say things are doing better. i look at the stock market. it is doing great. there are two americas. the big chunk of america going side ways and people who have a job and have money and people moving up again. >> we know there are airport workers and fast food workers and nurse assistants who work their tails off and are still living at or above poverty. >> who is the president talking to? all of these people vote, right? who over the next three years is he talking to or can he help? because presidents get too much credit and blame for the economy. >> i think that last is true. you get credit when probably you don't deserve it and you get blame when you don't deserve it. there is a lot of cyclical things in the economy. >> the message is they can control. >> the people are cutting back

on their christmas list. then we hear that christmas sales were off. it is people going -- people are still afraid of the economy. you can't talk the economy up when it's not. clearly people are still feeling that and he talks about the middle class. i hate that. i don't know a politician who doesn't talk about the middle class. unless you are stratosphereic, everyone thinks they are middle class. there are people who are falling out of the middle class. to me, those are the folks going i can't spend a lot on christmas this year. that is where the message needs to go. >> you tell us. you are the expert. where is this going from overseas. people are envious of the growth of the economy. they are a little green chutes in europe. >> i think it is getting better. it is benefits the top. the top 1% of households in the

past three years have taken home 95% of the income games. that is almost everything. when it is coming up -- >> is that market? >> that's stocks, housing, that's earnings. it's the whole pie is going only to the top. >> and explain why that doesn't trickle down. >> you keep hearing about how the big companies are the job creators. they are not creating the big jobs. small and mid sized companies creating jobs. they are fickle. they are likely to layoff again if something happens. maybe because they can make big profits without hiring a lot of people. that is what is holding things back. i never count down the u.s. when. we have the best legal system in the world. other countries want to model off us. >> you need to keep mindful of the university system as high as it was. >> you think the rest of the

world wants to do that? >> there are many foreign students that still want to come here. you see them actually go -- the united states had a whopping share of foreign is students coming here. there are u.s. franchises abroad. a lot of people are going there. people looking elsewhere as well. >> big ceos like eric schmidt hopes that outflow of people come here would like to start a company here and they cannot. they go back where they do have a great lifestyle if they want to go back to india or china or singapore and start a business. that is a problem for us. >> i am with you. i absolutely believe in the u.s. economy and, you know, capitalism. i think the big argument is how do we, you know, the republicans aren't going to say tax people more and let's redistribute it. how do you get those jobs?

the president talks all the time. we have to create more jobs. republicans are on the senate floor and house floor saying we ought to concentrate on jobs. that is as far as it ever gets. >> how do you create those jobs? that's the question. also, how do people get by who have jobs, but don't earn enough to live comfortably? those are the right say get out of the way. those on the left say build a bigger safety net. it will only get louder and bigger as we head into the election year. this man doesn't work in a plush silicon valley office. he works at home. he was what the brilliant tech companies were looking for if only he could learn coding. >> this guy patrick walks up and says can i talk to you? what goes through your head? what did you think he wanted? >> i didn't do anything. you got the wrong guy. over th
