>> i'm john berman. it is 5:00 a.m. in the east and we begin in the northeast. what a way to start the week. knee-deep in snow and digging out this morning. more than a foot of snow falling in parts of new york and new england. hundreds of flights cancelled and if that is not enough fedex is warning the bad weather could mean delays for millions of holiday packages. >> you'll have to knit something now. >> a mess of the roads in pennsylvania. this tractor-trailer coming within inches sliding off an overpass. be careful over there. >> more in massachusetts. i-93 in wilmington, pspinouts ad accidents all over the state. >> let's look at boston area. concerns about the morning commute. all of that slush and rain freezing up as the temperatures fall. drivers being warned to take it slow this monday morning. >> in albany, they are breaking

out snow blowers in that part of new york. buried under a foot of snow, the capital in new york. >> florida escaping the snow but still picking up the pieces from a brutal storm. seven homes along florida's palm coast destroyed by a tornado saturday night. over 160 more suffering some damage. there is nothing left of 77-year-old johnny copperly's house. the tornado tore off his roof. >> my house blew up and i'm probably dead. i think i prayed a little bit and that is about all. i said, i think it's over and i got to try to get out of here and it was pitch dark, of course. i felt my way to the front door. >> wow. what a tragedy. but a miracle he survived. wild weather this weekend for millions of americans. the question now is is it over yet? are we going to get hit with more? indra petersons is tracking it all for us.

>> i know in vermont you saw nine inches or snow but maine saw a good 16 inches. also around maine, 12 inches. new hampshire about a foot. now here in new york, we saw about 5 inches and boston 5 to 6 inches. the big question is there any more? there is more snow on the way and most likely overnight tonight. little energy will come through but nothing like this weekend. chicago today, you can see about an inch or so and in through tomorrow the snow is expected to come on down again and another 2 to 3 inches of snow is headed our way. nothing like it was but still beautiful and temperatures staying cold. we don't have maps this morning as you can tell so a quick summary until we get that going. head of the task force is looking into the leaks of edward snowden. rick legend tells "60 minutes" the information that edward snow

parliament to the u.s. the motion is still nonbinding rb football isn't the only sport dealing with chronic brain injuries. a year after he admitted suicide at the age of 36, researchers say former big league baseball player ryan freel had chronic traumatic encephalopathy. he is the first major league baseball ever diagnosed with the disorder. he was a fearless player with the cincinnati reds and often diving head-first into bases or crashing into outfield walls. >> important cases like ryan freel make a difference because it is showing us that you don't need to have the kind of hits that we see in football or in hockey or in other real collision sports. you just need a lot of brain trauma it seems. >> freel died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound last december leaving behind three daughters. >> this is a big deal and baseball is making a lot of

tamerlan tsarnaev told his mother he felt like two people were inside him and as he got older the other voice grew more demanding. a doctor thought he might be schizophrenic but the family never sought treatment. these are now being published by "the boston globe." friday's terrifying school shooting in centennial, colorado. the governor said it was the quick response of the school deputy that prevented 18-year-old karl pierson from taking more lives. >> this kid by all accounts didn't exhibit the warning signs of mental illness. it's hard to fathom why he would have done this without being somewhat crazy. >> the governor says the security officer followed newly active established protocols for a shooter. the ordeal lasted more than a minute and a half.

pierson died of a gunshot wound after shooting another student who remains in critical condition this morning. an ohio man is charged with murder the in death of a 9-year-old girl whose body was found in a trash bin. 24-year-old metzger was arrested at his home on saturday after the police found the body of the girl near her home in smithville. they say metzger lives in the same mobile home park as the victim. a newlywed who admitted pushing her husband off a cliff after lying to police. jordan graham pleaded guilty last week. she told investigators her husband left town with two friends initially. >> i got a message saying he was going to go for a ride with somebody out of town who was visiting and they were from washington, so my guess is -- so he walked out or made a call or something. he was in the garage. i got a text saying he was going. >> wow. that's not true.

begin with a messy monday morning in the northeast. millions of people knee-dein snow and digging out right now. more than a foot of snow falling on parts of new york and new england. fedex warning all of the bad weather could mean major delays for millions of holiday packages. >> happy monday, everybody! ice and up to 9 inches of snow making a mess of the roads in pennsylvania. take a look at this tractor-trailer coming within inches of sliding right off of an overpass there. check that out. more of the mayhem in pennsylvania. check out the conditions on i-93. a spinouts and accidents all over the state with more than a foot of snow recorded north of the massachusetts turnpike. >> big concerns about the morning commute throughout boston. freezing rain as temperatures fall and drivers are being warned to take it slow this morning or take it wicked slow they say in the boston area. albany, new york, the capitol is buried under more than a foot of snow.

weather center. >> the day in between looking at the radar pretty much all we have right now is lake-effect snow and we are looking a trough. you want to look at all of that cool air that is kind of taking over the eastern half of the country. temperatures today on the mild side if not below normal. this is where we are looking for highs today below freezing. maine 20 and you get the idea it's going to be cold and stay cold for some time and now talk about more snow. why not? right? we have a couple of systems. one making its way out but notice a little tiny little piece of energy clip on through and that is going to bring more snow today in places like chicago. overnight tonight in through tomorrow the mid-atlantic the northeast and lake-effect snow out for you today. about 3 to 5 inches around erie and syracuse and michigan 2 to 3 inches there and the next system we are talking about a threat. we talked about the timing of this really notice by tuesday, you'll start to get a

youtube. sara has been covering this story and joins us live from there. what is the latest there? >> we actually went into court today and we watched the proceedings which lasted about three hours because a lot of other cases that came up. but we can see these five men who are all charged under this same cybercrime law that was updated after the arab spring and some analysts say a reason for that, that the government became pretty concerned after seeing what happened in the arab spring and started to clamp down on certain things that went out online. this case has baffled a lot of people. the american and his friends, the family of cassim says, look, it was just supposed to be funny. a lot of people have watched this video online on. we ourselves have gone through it with a fine-tooth comb and very little in there that would suggest any kind of threat to the nation. however, it is being looked at very differently by uae authorities and if you sort of

get some idea of what they were trying to say, they were joking about a neighborhood being dangerous, a suburb of dubai being dangerous which everyone here knows it's one of the safest places you can be. they did stand up in court all five in front of a judge and took about five minutes and sat down and later on in the couple of hours later, the judge said, okay, well, come back december 23rd. that is all that happened in court today. i can tell you though, in sitting there there is certainly some nervous smiles and people waving at their family and some of the five who are all arrested have been in jail for eight months have been looking over at their family members as the proceeding was going on. >> cassim in prison eight months and has to wait another week before he find anything else out. how did he look? did he appear any worse for the wear? >> i have to tell you i didn't even recognize him. i had to ask someone in the court if that was him. he looked a lot thinner than you

see on the video and his pictures. he looked -- he was one of the only ones of the five people there, one of the only ones that didn't actually look over to family members sitting. he looked gaunt and he was looking down. he wasn't smiling. he had grown out his hair. he looked different. he definitely looked different. we did hear from someone who had been in prison with him who told us that it seemed that he was a bit depressed, he was a bit low that this was very hard for him and none of them really understood what exactly they were in jail for after explaining that this was just something funny and it was a joke and a documentary, if you will. there is a lot of frustration but we do know there is a lot of people pulling for him. we know that the minnesota governor, for example, has contacted the state department and, as you know, a-list hollywood will farrell, the comedian and some of his buddies from funny or die have come out asking the uae to release cassim and his friends for doing what
