year! i-christine romans. >> >> that cold weather will wake you up at this hour. i'm annika in for john berman. thank you for joining us on this monday, december 30th. a deadly terror bombing second time in as many days. 14 people are dead in this bus explosion and it happens a month before the winter olympics in sochi and putin has promised will be the safest olympics in history. >> it's clear two attacks in the same day in the same city shows how vulnerable this entire country is to terrorist attacks. you have sochi, very, very close to the extremely north caucuses

region where russia has been fighting for more than a decade. when the announcement the olympics would take place in sochi the fear was that putin would not be able to contain the terrorism in that area. another attack on friday a car bomb three people were killed on friday and another town in the north caucuses and goes to show how difficult it is to contain that threat. volgograd is 420 miles away from sochi but you can still see that the terrorists are spreading fear and it is a major rail hub for anyone travel from moscow to central russia en route to sochi. >> the security for the olympics will be very tight in sochi. what do we know? what does this mean for the planning of the olympics or for the security kroungsurrounding olympics? >> reporter: sochi is a limited area. we have done in our reporting,

we have seen how many techs that will be there. you won't be able to bring your car unless it's registered in advance and metal detectors everywhere and you will be frisked and difficult to get near the olympic games for terrorists and possibly why they are targeting other cities in southern russia which are much easier. it may be an attack that authorities are focused on this. will the terrorist plan something either bigger in the games or in moscow, for example? >> diana, thank you. another blast you said on friday and two deadly blasts and fierce there a month before the olympics. thanks, diana. down south, severe weather conditions forcing an australian ship to stop the search. 74 people on board this vessel and stuck in the bottom of the earth now for a whole week.

ice breaking ship from australia is miles away but can't move ahead because of heavy snow and poor visibility. cnn's matthew chance is joining us live from london. these poor guys just can't catch a break. >> no. it's incredible. a sag is going on since christmas day when their ship, carrying scientists and crew members to this eastern continent of antarctica was trapped in unseasonably thick packed eye there is and been there since christmas day. 74 members of the passengers and crew on board haven't been able to get anywhere. they have got plenty of food and water and the ship is functionifunction i ing, so they are not in many danger but all efforts have been abandoned to try and rescue. three separate attempts now. first a chinese icebreaker

called the snow dragon got within eight nautical miles and had to call it off because they stalled in the thick ice and another one called of its mission to on reach the ships. now an straighten icebreaker has done the same thing. it cannot get there. the weather conditions are so bad. the ice is so thick, these eye eye -- ice breakers are not able to reach it. what people, at the moment, are saying, the rescue teams, at the moment, they have to sit tight and wait for things to change. >> wow. the 74 people on board have got to be getting nervous. you mentioned three rescue attempts failing. what are the options for rescue at this point? >> they are not good at this point. the rescue teams said they have to wait until the weather conditions change. there is a possibility they could be ferry are or air-lifted

off the ship by helicopter but at the moment, the winds are so high there so they can't find a helicopter in the region either. they have to wait for the weather conditions to change. >> the message is hunker down and be patient. >> if you live in the northern plains or in the northeast, can you expect to mark the end of 2013 with freezing temperatures and snow. meteorologist jennifer gray is following the next dose of winter. we won't need an icebreaker but a warm coat. >> definitely. you may not realize it but the southern hemisphere is in the north. temperatures 23 degrees below zero in minneapolis. this is what it feels like this morning with the windchill. of course, 36 below zero in international falls. very cold. we have windchill advisories and warnings in effect right now where the windchill this morning in places in the northern plains

will feel like 20 to 30 degrees below zero. so very, very cold. these cold temperatures really aren't going to go anywhere the next couple of days. so in the northern plains you'll be ringing in the new year on a cold note with temperatures 15 degrees below normal. new york city by tuesday, 37 degrees. so we are not that far from normal as we get into the middle to the end of the week, a lot of this cold air will be pushing into the northeast and so we will be in the deep freeze here in the northeast by the end of the week. a couple of little clipper systems in the north. of course, we are waiting on this main front that is going to pull through by the end of the week. it could bring snow and even rain to a large portion of the east. of course, we will be talking about that as we go through the end of the week as well. as far as through new year's eve, new year's day, snow kum accumulations quiet and snow in the north and could see 3 to 6 inches of snow in the northern plains and around the great

democrats are taking issue with this "the new york times" report. >> intelligence indicates that al qaeda was involved but there are plenty of people and militias that are unaffiliated with al qaeda that were involved. >> times really analyzing this and saying not a great understanding of these militias on ground and how they were at play there and placing most of the play with the anti-muslim video and painting a very murky picture what was happening there on the ground is what "the new york times" report does. a suspected bank robber shot and killed in arizona after a manhunt. we are learning he served time for threatening the president in 2010. 40-year-old mario edward garnett was shot by a detective on saturday as he left the phoenix bank with a bag of cash. >> when this suspect started firing on our officer, the detective had arrived and he saw this occurring. at that point, he pulled his service weapon and he fired upon the suspect, striking him in the

upper body and the suspect went down. >> the fbi says garnett is suspected in a whole week-long robbery spree that spanned from georgia to arizona. he got into a shoot-out with police in mississippi. he killed a police officer there. the coast guard searching for a canadian man who jumped off a cruise ship 15 miles from puerto rico. other passengers saw the 26-year-old man jump saturday night. the final night of a cruise with his family. royal caribbean said the ship turned around to look for the man and no word on what led him to jump. a development now in a story we have been following closely here on cnn. time running out for the family of this 1-year-old girl, jahi mcmath who has been on a ventilator since a tonsillect y tonsillectomy. she will he removed from life support at 5:00 p.m. unless the

family appeals. doctors have declared the girl brain dead. >> barring any other action from the family tomorrow when 5:00 comes around, the ventilator will be pulled. >> jahi's family launched an online crosource to raise money transfer her to a nursing home so a lot of eyes on what is happening next in this saga. minimum wages set to go up in several states this week. workers in new jersey will see it increase to $8.25 on new year's day. connecticut and rhode island and new york will see bumps between quarter to 75 cents an hour. nine other states will see increases thanks to annual cost of living adjustments. you can see the states there. a supreme new yorker will do the honors on times square this

welcome back to "early start" this among morning. the winningest formula one driver in history severely injured on sunday. 44-year-old michael schumacher is in critical condition following brain surgery. he sustained severe head trauma while skiing in the french alps. amanda is in london with the latest for us. >> good morning. >> reporter: we are now about 24 hours on since 44-year-old michael schumacher was involved in this accident. he was air-lifted to a hospital. we received one statement about 10:30 local time last night saying, yes, michael schumacher was in critical condition with severe brain trauma. i can tell you another press

conference at the hospital has just concluded, the three surgeons who have been dealing with him have been speaking to the media with an update and they said that he is still in a critical condition fighting for his life. he's in an artificial induced coma, having undergone one operation, suffering severe brain lesions as they put it. he also is in a state of induced hypothermia which is the traditional brain cooling strategy they do to reduce the pressure on the brain. they wouldn't go as far as making any long-term predictions. they said they are very much dealing on an hour-by-hour basis. they did say the fact that michael schumaker was skiing and the fact he was wearing a helmet most definitely saved his life. they said it protected him and without the helmet he wouldn't

john berman is getting ready to anchor "new day." back to the deadly explosion in russia. at least 14 people are dead in this recent bus explosion. this coming a day after 17 people were killed at a railway station in the same city. so with the olympics just over a month away, do these explosions affect preparations? and how are terror concerns being addressed? diane magnay is in moscow this morning with the very latest. diana? >> reporter: hi. president putin has issued a command to heighten the security around russia and especially in the volgograd area where the explosion took place and two months ago another suicide bombing which killed six people on board a bus. it's just over 400 miles away from sochi where the games are

taking place. nearby also is the troubled north caucuses region and, of course, daggerstein, the two suspects in the boston bombings had links to that city. it is a hotbed of insurgency there and terror training camps in the mountains there. there are real concerns that the terrorists from the north caucuses region are planning attacks and are able to strike the olympic games themselves and perhaps these two attacks which far away from the games but where security is not so tight an easy target and major rail hub for people traveling to the games. perfect at creating an atmosphere of fear ahead of president putin's pet project, these olympic games on which he has poured so much money and which he said would be the safest olympics ever and everybody is putting that into doubt now. >> do we know what the motive might be in all of this? is it as you said to instill fear ahead of the olympics?

>> reporter: we don't know a motive and no claim of responsibility for any of these bombings. the chechen war lord who is the head of the biggest extremist group, a 5 million award on his head. he said in july he wanted to release maximum force on putin to disrupt the olympic games. within that context, these terror attacks make sense. this is peak holiday season. just before new year's eve which is russia's most important holiday. a time when thousands will be traveling around. and it is such a short time until the games. you know, you get the sense that they are capable of spreading terror, they are capable of these attacks and there may be more to come. >> you got to think that security forces are really ramping up their efforts this morning in preparation for those olympic games.

diana, thanks for that update. so close but so far. happening overnight. efforts to rescue a stranded ship in antarctica shut down because of bad weather. a ice breaking ship is miles away from the research vessel with 74 people on board and that has been stranded a week now. this morning, heavy snow showers, poor visibility preventing any rescue attempt. cnn's matthew chance is live in london with the latest. hi, matthew. >> reporter: hi, christine. that's right. if you were dreaming of a white christmas it doesn't get much whiter than this place. 1,500 miles south of australia in the heart of antarctica where this russian registered research vessel has been stranded since christmas day. so nearly a week now. 74 people are board, including the crew, scientists, tourists who were expecting to spend a sort of a christmas vacation touring this very remote area and retracing the ship -- they

have been stuck this christmas day and spirits are higher and they are still experimenting and eating well and lots of food supplies but three separate attempts now to rescue them using icebreakers from three separate countries had to be abandoned. the first one from china called the snow dragon called off its attempts to reach the ship because of thick ice when it was seven nautical miles away within eyesight of the ship. another one called off their attempt to rescue them and another one from australia is unable to keach the shokalskiy. they are waiting for weather conditions to improve and possibly try again. >> matthew, they are marking the 100 years since this other australian explorer did this. think of how technology has changed in a hundred years, yet

the elements still have the upper hand here. >> reporter: that's right, that's right. certainly is. until those elements change, then they are going to have to stay where they are. it's not a desperate situation i have to add but things could rapidly deteriorate. >> matthew chance in london, thanks. >> i'm sure they will have a good story when it's all said and done. speaking of cold. a good chunk of the northern plains and the northeast is expected to mark the end of 2013 with some snow. meteorologist jennifer gray is following this latest arctic blast. good morning. >> we have another one. the country very, very quite, to tell you the truth. the big story this morning is temperatures. it is very, very cold. when you factor in the windchill, it feels like 23 below zero in minneapolis, feeling like 36 below zero in international falls. even chicago, 11 degrees below normal. we have advisories in place and this is a very dangerous cold so folks in the northern plains

definitely need to pay attention. about 16 degrees below normal in minneapolis. chicago about 15 degrees below normal. that is before you add in the windchill. so feeling much, much colder. this cold air is really not going to go anywhere any time soon. it is basically just going to hang out in the northern plains and right around the great lakes. at least until the end of the week. we have temperatures only about 2 degrees below normal here in new york city for tuesday with temperatures around 37 degrees, but then as you get into wednesday, thursday, and especially into friday, things will change for the east coast for sure. very quiet for today. not much going on. we do have a little bit of lake-effect snow but we will have this one low to move across the northeast. new year's eve into new year's day we are planning on most of the snow to be an interior sections and not really along the coast. then you can see by new year's day at noon it's pushed off. that is in and out very quickly. we are watching our next one, though. that is going to be here by the

have a few more records. the dow had another very good week last week gaining 257 points on the week and it's about 1.6%. the dow for the year is up 26%. nasdaq 38%. s&p 500 up 29%. best year for stocks since 1996 or 1997. a lot of people looking at their 401(k)s and very happy about what they see. internet and social media companies are showing some of the biggest gains of the year. facebook is up more than 100% this year. google up, wow, nearly 60% and topped a thousand dollars a share. netflix up 300%. twitter had a stumble. twitter shares stumbled on friday falling 13% the biggest one day drop ever after analyst downgraded the stock saying it had gone too far, too fast. even though it's a holiday week, an important one for housing data. three reports wall street is watching for signs of strength.
