extraordinary video from minneapolis. a woman loses control of her truck and goes flying right over a guardrail. she goes down 30 feet, lands on a frozen pond. we're showing it to you because she is okay. can you imagine that? very lucky. >> and with the cold, of course, often comes the snow. it's falling heavily in up state new york right now creating very dangerous conditions. we are covering this story like no other network can. indra peter sons here tracking the forecast. let's begin with pamela brown live from the suburbs of buffalo, new york. how is it there this morning? >> reporter: much more time out here and i probably will be frozen. it is fru tall. it's the kind of cold that makes your cheeks hurt really. of course, the snow we're dealing with as well.

this has been the scene here in buffalo ever since the warning went into effect monday evening. we're seeing about 15 inches of snow right now. and this has really beenen epic -- been an epic event in buffalo because it's the first blizzard warning here since 1993. overnight, the bitter cold temps and how longing winds creating whiteout conditions over our nation's snow belts. gusts of 40 miles an hour, snow piling up the rate of 2 inches an hour. police forced to use snow mobiles to rescue stranded drivers. a blizzard trifecta of biting cold and lake-effect snow.

the cold air sucks up the moisture and heat dropping into snow when it moves over land. adding to the misery, the windchill plummeting at times to a frigid 20 degrees below zero. a massive snowstorm on the heels of a nationwide deep freeze. >> i couldn't last much longer out here. >> reporter: all 50 states recorded temps below freezing on tuesday. in new jersey, live power lines collapsed onto a transit train. windchills are so cold the sdoo animals were brought inside in washington. >> this temperature's just a little too cold for them. >> snarling traffic across the country cancelling thousands of flights and icy roads making driving treacherous and terrifying. and officials are blaming 16 deaths on the weather across the

country. so far, officials say no deaths here in buffalo. this looks like a horizon of ice. this is actually lake eerie. it was so cold here it got down to about 2 degrees and it felt like negative 25. it got so cold, though, that ice covered lake eerie. that minimized some of that lake-effect snow. of course it prevented the moisture from the water going up in the cold air. we're not seeing the snow totalled that we thought we were going to see. buffalo residents, they know how to deal with this weather and it has been a ghost town. >> when you say they know how to deal with this, how they deal with it is they are smart and they stay inside. >> reporter: that's right. and officials are saying that's a big reason why we haven't seen more injuries and deaths here in buffalo. >> thanks so much pamela.

now get inside. >> some states are slowly beginning to thaw out this morning. >> for the first time you're seeing my face and i actually have good news. it is a nice change even though when you look at the map it doesn't look it. still talking about temperatures over 30 below in minnesota. many of these temperatures are ten, if not 20 degrees warmer. hard to tell, but they are. notice even the southeast still seeing temperatures below freezing this morning. let's talk about what's expected to change. notice atlanta 17 degrees right now. look at that change. it lifts up and brings that cold air back to where we want it to be, into the north pole. warm air comes off of the gulf. notice the change by the weekend. we're going from well below to

well above normal by the weekend. finally, i'm bringing you that good niez. today, still talking about cool temperatures. ten degrees warmer today. some of you actually are already going to start to be above normal. towards the weekend, yes, it gets warmer, but it also means rain and snow. >> i absolutely agree. we were talking about it. as much as we hear you and listen to you and you say it is cold out there, i walked around yesterday and i kept saying, can you believe how cold it is? i can't believe how cold it is. >> it really is cold. >> first winter here. you're ready now. >> a little hazing i'm going to call it. >> she's no joke, though. she has a whole blizzard pack she has to bring with her. >> i have to fight with long johns in the morning because many are going to go on.

>> one of the big problems is that it's not just about the temperatures, it's about the impact. we have new details on what turned into a killer avalanche. the avenue large killing the grandson of one of vail's founders. we're following develops from denver. good morning. >> reporter: good morning, chris. friends say he was a very experienced skier. he was with three of his buddies. they were in an area that's known to be popular for back country skiing and snow boarding. it's just a short hike from the top of the vail mountain see area. it's also an area known to be avalanche prone. a scoured mountain tied, trees tossed like toys. >> it's been described as a couple hundred yards wide and map up to 10 feet deep running

close to a thousand feet vertical. >> reporter: this is the back country not far from the vail ski resort. >> it is not on vail resort's mountain. it is for experienced skiers and snow boarders. >> reporter: it trapped four people. it was too late for their friend. the victim now identified as 24-year-old anthony seibert, the grandson of the ski area's founder. >> he was a fabulous skier. >> reporter: it's now the second avalanche fatality in colorado in just over a week. this amazing video is from the same area. another avalanche triggered just days before christmas. here, davis digs out his brother saving his life. >> what we've been seeing over the last ten days or so is just a general increase of the size of the avalanches.

>> reporter: why is that? >> we have very weak snow near the ground that formed early in the season. so the slab over it is starting to get thicker and larger. >> reporter: and it's happening all across the rocky mountain region. one of these men was buried and killed. and trails were closed at these utah resort when avalanches temperature rarely bured -- temporarily buried skiers. now, avalanche.org. that's a website to remember. there you can find the latest avalanche information. also a shovel, a beacon and a probe. these are the crucial items you have to have experts say if you're heading into the back country right now. >> any experienced skier knows there's always a risk. but still, when you see that video and you see it happen, it is terrifying.

13 years. learning more about a deadly avalanche in vail. anthony seibert was killed. authorities say he was trapped in the snow with three other people. seibert is the grandson of the man who co-founded the vail ski resort. prosecutors say a man stopped for speeding outside of ohio had close to 50 bombs inside his vehicle. he also reportedly has four loaded guns and a remote control death -- detonator. more than 100 firefighters have pleaded not in a massive scheme. more than half the defendants claim post-traumatic stress claims from 9/11. more on this in our next hour.

get out of this logistical and pr nightmare. good morning renee. >> reporter: good morning, chris. you know, jet blie became the story in the midst of all of this winter weather. at this point now, jetblue is trying to make good with those customers. thousands of jetblue passengers are finally reaching their destinations as the airline tries to get back on track following their unpopular decision to ground outline planes scheduled to depart new york city, new jersey and boston airports monday night into tuesday. >> i had to find out through the news that my flight was -- they shut down completely. >> reporter: jetblue canceled more than 1,800 flights since thursday and bruising the public's opinion of the airline. now it's in damage control. >> i absolutely think we did the right thing.

when you're doing things for safety reasons, not only of our people and our assets but inevitably our customers, i think we're doing them the best service possible, no matter how hard the short term pain is. >> reporter: cancellations impacted 150,000 passengers. jet blie predicts the backlog could take another day to work through. >> i got the last seat, first flight out. >> reporter: almost every major airline was impacted by the polar vortex, but jetblue beared the brunt. >> the vast majority of their flights from the northeast, most from jfk, they were more affected. >> reporter: jetblue has a history of weather troubles. in a 2007 storm, passengers sat for eight hours on the tarmac in

call. >> they had stop add mother and a 7-year-old daughter earlier that night and followed them home. >> there was a weapon used. the male produced what's been described as a rifle and the mom stopped. he was able to force the child into the car and then fled the scene. >> based on ramirez's tip, police were able to track down the suspect in just four hours. the 7-year-old girl was recovered safely in his car. >> he had not hurt her, no. >> douglas is now talking in a jailhouse interview. he claims the government, his neighbors and his family are conspireing against him, and he believes the mother may have been in on the conspiracy. >> the mother made a very, very obvious effort of turning and looking right at me. not just glancing at me.

buffalo residents know how to deal with brutal winter weather, but this is truly been an epic event here. we're on the tail end of it right now, by conditions, snow still coming down. about 15 inches this morning. it's really the wind and the cold making the conditions brutal and really miserable. wind gusts up to 45 miles per hour at times. lake eerie looks like just an endless sheet of ice. overnight the bitter cold temps and how longing winds creating whiteout conditions over our nation's snow belts. major highways shut down in buffalo as gusts go to 40 miles an hour, snow piling up the rate of 2 inches an hour. >> still a very, very life threatening situation if you should happen to be in a vehicle

that gets stuck along the side of the road. >> reporter: a blizzard trifecta of biting winds and lake-effect snow, which happens when bitter cold air passes over a body of water. the cold air sucks up and drops over land as snow. a massive snowstorm on the heels of a nationwide deep freeze. >> i couldn't last much longer out here. >> reporter: all 50 states recorded temps below freezing on tuesday. >> i'm really, really freezing and i'm not really prepared for this. >> reporter: in new jersey, live poir lines collapsed onto a transit train. a thousand passengers were delayed for hours. windchills were so cold, the zoo animals were brought inside. >> this temperature is just a little too cold for them. >> reporter: cancelling thousands of flights and icy roads making driving treacherous

and terrifying. watch as the driver of this pickup truck loses control plunging from a minnesota overpass. and officials are attributing 16 ets across the country to the weather. buffalo officials are saying there haven't been any deaths. residents here in buffalo have been heading the warning, staying indoors. the moisture from the water hasn't been able to get up into the cold air, so we're not seeing the accumulation that we thought we would see. but as you can see here, the snow is still coming down. it is expected to persist throughout the day, but that blizzard warning no longer in effect her. it is brutally freezing cold her. >> it is brutally cold i'm sure

right now. thanks so much, pamela. so you may not or probably should not call it warm, but the temperatures are actually starting to rise. that can help avoid scenes like this one. look at the car spinning out of control on black ice in illinois. so, indra, how much longer are we looking at this arctic blast? >> all i can think about is poor pamela. being indoors feels so much better when i know so many people are still dealing with this bitter cold. let's talk about what we're seeing right now. when you talk about temperatures 30 below in minnesota, that's about 20 degrees warmer than where they were just yesterday. yes, that is all changing. now let's take you down to the southeast. same thing. not below normal right now, but definitely freezing temperatures are out there. we all need this change. really half of the country needs that change, and thai going to get it. the jet stream is expected to

gates. they are trying to defend the president against this pook. why? well, in it, the book challenges the president and calls the vice president wrong on every foreign policy issue. what are you hearing? >> chris, it's definitely added a chill down here in the nation's capitol. it's an old washington cliche, work in government and then cash in. this latest memoir comes from the seemingly mild mannered former secretary of defense bob gates. at his farewell ceremony in 2011 after serving nearly every president since richard nixon, bob gates left the pentagon hinting he had issues with washington. >> i spent a bit of time venting

frustrations. >> reporter: that wasn't the half of it. in his new memoir hitting bookstores next week -- national security of any i had seen since richard nixon gates writes in one excerpt. the president doesn't believe in his own strategy, for him, it's all about getting out. and goes onto say, suspicion and distrust of senior military officers including the president and vice president became a big problem for me. >> i think people -- his words will have significant impact. and frankly, i'm a little surprised because a lot of times people are not quite as candid as it appears that his book is. >> reporter: how's this for candid? on biden, he writes i think he's been wrong on every major foreign policy and national security issue over the last

four decades. he said, hillary told her position has been political. considering gate's place in history during the killing of osama bin laden, the memoir is seen by some critics as an act of betray y'all. >> you owe your loyalty to that man or woman in the white house. and if you can't handle it, you leave and your quiet, but gates wanted to have it both ways. >> reporter: back in 2011, the president praised gates. >> the integrity of bob gates is also a reminder, especially to folks here in washington, that civility and respectful discourse and citizenship over partisanship are not quaint relics of a bygone era.

going rate. >> all right. how does that factor into what basketball dib masscy -- diplomacy is supposed to be about. we're going to bring in greg anthony and former governor of new mexico mr. bill richardson. >> thank you, chris. thank you. >> mr. ambassador, let me start with you. set the table for us in terms of what your best guess is for why the ruler of this country has come to dennis rodman and what you think rodman has been told that may account for his disposition about kenneth bae. >> well, obviously both rodman and kim jong-un are benefiting from this trip. rodman with the enormous publicity of his basketball diplomacy which has now, i think, become a disaster, but kim jong-un having his birthday,

showing his population that he's in control, he's confident. but basketball diplomacy, out of the box diplomacy in many cases can help the foreign policy of the united states and other countries. but now, because rodman has not just praised the leader, he's gone and played basketball on his birthday to celebrate. and i think what's most reprehensible is his implication that kenneth bae, an american detain knee on various spurious charges, might be guilty, obviously he, rodman was briefed by the north koreans. they see him as their link to the united states because they don't want to talk to us. they're hostile. and so this is where we are right now. basketball diplomacy, out of the box diplomacy, special envoys, not traditional diplomats can do

a lot of good, but now, because of rodman's comments, even some nba that were probably there seriously for just basketball diplomacy have been compromised. that's where we are right now. it's unfortunate. by the way, you did a very good interview. >> thank you very much. greg, let me ask you something. i was trying in the interview to separate charles smith and the others from rodman. and i know that you believe that that is the right thing to do. tell me why. >> well, i think that the governor just discussed very eloquently in terms of, one, the importance of sports, not just basketball, but basketball specifically in this case can play when you are trying to bridge gaps, when you're trying to create a conduit to stamp up conversations. i'm sure the governor's aware of this. if you go back to the early 70s,

we had a similar relationship with the chinese. and they sent over their table tennis teams to tour the country and play friendlies, if you will. that was the beginning of trying to bridge a gap there in terms of the relationships between the two countries. and i think this -- this opportunity to a certain degree was lost because of the antics of dennis yesterday. and it's unfortunate, because it does take away all of the good will that could have been brought about by these athletes going over there. although, the leadership in north korea, it's well documented the atrocities that have been committed there, the unfortunates a perkt that we forget, there are lots of people in north korea who don't have a say, who don't have an opportunity to really know what's going on. it's a third world country. they don't have access generally speaking to the internet to

what's going on in western sievization. this would have been their first opportunity to have that experience. and those opportunities potentially will be lost in the future because of the antics of dennis yesterday in your interview. >> does it change the analysis, though, that they agreed to play this good will game on the ruler's birthday and what they had to know rodman was terming a gift and of course the money involved? >> first of all, that's a huge leap to make that assumption. and again, let's face it, i consider myself to be reasonably educated, i didn't know it was kim junk un's -- jong-un's birthday. >> so they may not have known? >> those guys could have been blind sided. you saw how uncomfortable they were sitting there when dennis rent on his rave and his rant. i don't think there's any question they were compensated

and sold that they were going over to do some good deal. you're literally killing two birds with one stone. continue earning a living doing something you love and also go over and have some good will. so i think a lot of those guys were completely blind sided by this. it's unfortunate because they're probably going to catch a bit of a fire storm when they get back. >> yeah. but by having this discussion. i take your point. hopefully they get carved out. get more fair treatment. two more quick points. ambassador, why hasn't the u.s. state department been able to help ken knit bae. is the state department doing enough here because it is humiliating to have to depend on dennis rod man. what's your take? >> well the problem is that this new north korean leader, we don't know where he's coming from. he's very hostile to the united

states. he has refused treaty from the united states states department. american especially voi was going to -- envoy was going to go and the north koreans said don't come. so the state department has tried. the problem is we know very little about this new leader. we know he is having internal problems obviously. this brutal execution. replacing military leaders that he's had that were loyal to his father. he seems a bit insecure. he's only 31 years old, has very little experience. so the problem here is that rodman is about the only person that he has talked to from the outside world. the chinese who are the pa troens of north korea have not been able to move this new young leader into negotiation with anybody, with south korea with the united states. many entities have tried to be brokers.

apparently he has a relationship with dennis rodman. and i thought initially, when rodman went over there the first time, i said maybe at the very least he can get kenneth bae out. i had tried with the ceo of google. i wasn't able to do it because he won't see anybody. i had access before to the leadership but not with kim jong-un. nobody has access but dennis rod man. >> such a bizarre situation. i want to end on this. a lot of pushback has been don't make him into a diplomat, he's a basketball player. given out out spoken the guy is, do you believe that even though he's a basketball player that he is also in part carrying the responsibility to do what he can in the situation? do you think that's fair or do

you think no? >> well, listen, i think the possibility could have existed. it doesn't take a rocket scientist to watch the interview you conducted yesterday and realize that many dennis rodman wouldn't be the best person to consider using to be a diplomat or representative or a negotiator when it comes to something as delicate as trying to have prisoners released in north korea. so, no. no i do not. i think this could have a steppingstone towards the possibility that someone like governor richardson could have an opportunity to go over and further those conversations. because of how this is received, the reality is this is going to take us a step back in terms of what could potentially have evolved in terms of the relationships with north korea. >> greg anthony, ambassador richardson, thank you very much for joining us on "new day." greg i may be calling you on

armed gunman also shot their 5-year-old daughter. she is expected to survive. they are questioning five people. and look at this video of a freak sigh nam my sized wave injuring at least foyer spectators in portugal. it crashed into a lighthouse off the coast yesterday when an enormous wave suddenly rose up and came barrelling over a sea front. how frightening. >> thanks. turn now to our political check of the morning. a revealing memoir from robert gates has the white house reeling. the obama administration looking for alleys to defend the president after gates knocks him in the tell-all.

he wries that obamacare distrusted his top officials. so john, we know the white house has been preparing for this blistering criticism. they knew this was coming, but this comes at a time that the president is still in office and he's looking al his legacy. >> that's what makes it so remarkable. you have this ultimate inside player. let's start with this basic premise. this is a guy, whether you agree with him or not, who knows how the levers of government workings, who's been in town when big books have been written. he's a very, very smart man. he knows the book is going to be released during the obama presidency. he had to know the impact they were going to cause. i'm drying to watch him come out and -- dying to come out and promote his book. he is someone i have spoken to

myself about leaks. he says they don't help. so he had a reason he wanted to do this and it would be great to hear it from him directly. >> what do you think it is? >> well i think in part you see it in the excerpts that have been released and that we have confirmed at cnn. this tension -- he says he thought it's the most controlling white house when it comes to national security since nixon. he said they felt the same way, that the white house team, the national security council team was trying to make all these decisions, they essentially were pushing away military advice. that's part of it. and part of it seems to be some sense of resentment that he didn't think obama respected the military chain of command. for him, it was all about getting out of afghanistan. so if you're the defense secretary and you're the civilian who represents the

generals to the president, that's a tough one. >> what do you make of the white house's response so far? i'm sure there's more to come because this is different than other tell-all books like "double down." but it really doesn't have real impact. this book may. >> well this could impact the president's current relationships with the military brass. there's 2016 implications if biden runs. hillary clinton's critics are already using it against her. the president through the national security council spokeswoman praises gates. bob gates says biden has essentially been dead wrong. he has praises president obama's intellect and praises some of the decisions he made. it's not all critical. at times very harsh vie of the

president. but he says joe biden is a great man but dead wrong on everything. that's what the white house chose to address saying they profoundly disagree. >> there's a lot in here, and i think that the mistake that will be made is missing what you are describing right now which is the subtlty. it's not that he's vacilating, oh, he was bad, he was good. that's the way it is. afghanistan actually was president obama's situation. it was getting out of iraq that helped him. he then decided to go to afghanistan. so these are subtle situations. it will be interesting how the media decides to cherry pick it to allow the partisans their own avenues. i'd be surprised if the white house combats him, wouldn't you? >> excellent point. i'm not defending what he says

her. i think he deserves the benefit of the doubt and i'm ready to read every page twice. i've had several conversations with him and he is a very detail-oriented, a very dedicated public service. people can agree or disagree. there's context and nuance here that sometimes gets lost in the quick headlines. when you read some of the quotes about the sitting commander in chief, as you know president obama campaigned for the surge in afghanistan. liberals didn't like it. but then secretary gates says, within a year he came to the conclusion that the president didn't support his own policy, that the president just wanted to get out, that the president didn't want to listen to anyone who said leave the troops here longer. there's more nuance and more context. at the hoemt, though, trust me, this is the talk of washington. >> he is such a veteran of

we are going to cover this from every angle. indra petersons following it all for us from here. let's start with pamela brown in buffalo. >> reporter: the snow is still coming down here but it has let up significantly since he were here last night. we have seen about half an inch an hour here. the travel bans have been lifted, a very different scene ever since the blizzard began monday evening basically causing the city to come to a stand still. it was the first blizzard warning here in buffalo since 1993. i wanted you to take a look behind meep. hard to believe this is lake erie. it looks like an endless sheet of ice and snow, an indication of just how cold it got during the blizzard. overnight the bitter cold temps

and howling winds creating white out conditions over our nation's snow belt. major highways shut down in buffalo as gusts eclipped 40 miles per hour, police forced to use snow mobiles to rescue stranded drivers. >> still a very, very life threatening situation if you hannen to be in a vehicle stuck on the side of the road. >> reporter: whipping winds and some areas lake effect snow which happens when cold air passes over a warm body of water. adding to the misery, the wind chill plaumptting at times to 2 degrees below 0. >> i couldn't last much longer out here. >> reporter: all 50 states reported temps below freezing on tuesday.

and new jersey light power lines collapsed on to a transit train. 1,000 passengers were delayed for hours. wind chills are so cold that zoo animals were brought inside in washington. >> this temperature is just a little too cold for them. >> reporter: the bone chilling cold closing schools and snarling traffic canceling thousands of flights. watch as the driver of this pickup truck loses control plunging from a minnesota overpass. officials are attributing 16 deaths across the country to the polar votext. in buffalo officials saying there haven't been deaths. it was really a town. we were here last night. i think that says a lot because western new yorkers are tough when it comes to winter weather

and they were not venturing out. >> those are tough temperatures to be dealing with with. you may not feel it yet but the great american thaw out is about to begin. let's bring in indra petersons once again. what is it looking like? >> i'm glad i am inside today cht this chill was devastating. it was miserable and so many people are dealing with temperatures below 0 again today. 30 degrees below 0 in duluth. still seeing the northeast at sub0 temperatures. it is changing. first let me drop you to the southeast. still below freezing. everyone from the northeast down to the southeast, really the entire eastern half of the country needs the warmup. it is here. notice the jet stream went down all the way through florida. look at the current temperature. 17 degrees in atlanta.

notice the change once the guy works out of here. that will warm us up to above normal temperature. we are looking at 63 degrees for the weekend. some places seeing 70s and 80s. boston almost 20 degrees above normal. same for the southeast. talking about temperatures close to the 80 degree mark. you just wanted average. >> good week, starts bad ends well. >> you want credit for the warming but i do not remember you taking blame for the chilling. >> i get it anyway. check my twitter there. they are not happy. >> rightfully so. new this morning a deadly avalanche in colorado claimed as one of its victim's one of vale's own. he was trapped with three other people. he happens to be the grand son

of vale's founder. >> reporter: good morning, chris. it is a tragedy here. anthony sibert loved the outdoors and spent a lot of time in the back country. he was with three of his brothers in an area known to be popular, not inside the vale ski resort but a short hike from the top of vale mountain so it is accessible but also an area known to be avalanche prone. scoured mountain side, a giant avalanche leaving behind a deadly path of destruction. >> it is described as a couple of yards wide and maybe up to ten feet deep. >> reporter: this is the back country not far from the vale ski resort. >> it is not on vale resort's mountain. it is for experienced skiers and

snowboa snowboarders. >> reporter: it was too late for their friend. the victim identified as anthony sibert. >> they are fabulous skiers. >> reporter: it's the second avalanche fatality in colorado in just over a week. this amazing video is from the same area. another avalanche triggered days before christmas. here david lamerdigs out his brother saving his life. >> what we have been seeing over the last ten days is a general increase in the size of avalanches in the back country. >> reporter: why is that? >> we have weak snow near the ground that formed early in the season and we have been getting consistent snowfall so the slab over it is getting thicker and larger. >> reporter: it is happening all across the rocky mountain

region. trails were closed at this utah resort when an avalanche temporarily buried several skiers. experts urge anyone heading to the back country to be prepared for the power of mother nature. this is important. write this down. avalanche.org is a good resource to use if you are planning to head to the back country. also, a shovel, a beacon and a broeb, these are crucial to have with you if you head into the back country especially right now. so let's talk about that book. former defense secretary robert gates pulling no punches in a tell all called "duty." gates writes sharply criticizing white house at one point calling it by far the most centralized

and controlling in national security of any i have seen. joining us is david gergen. you are the perfect person to discuss this book. like gates you have worked for administrations, democrat and republican, dating back to the nixon administration. what do you make of this book and the timing? >> i welcome the book. bob gates, i have had the opportunity to know him and privilege of working with him over the years. in my judgment he is one of the finest public servants of our time. i think what he tried to do was be very candid about what is going on in washington. it is not just the partisanship and polarization. it is a fact that the man who came in to salvage two wars found it difficult to get

anything done of consquence in washington. he is not attacking individuals per se but rather to give us a sense of why it is so difficult for this country to be self-governing and to be effective here at home and overseas. >> i think everyone, journalists and anyone welcomes the candor to come out. but when you look at the unusual circumstances of this one he knows what he is doing. the president is still in office. he is a former cabinet secretary. it has many people wondering, do you think he is being disloyal? does he owe loyalty to the president who ppicked him to sit in his cabinet? >> i think there is a reason he called the book "duty." i believe he believes he has a sense of duty that is a sense of duty to the young men and women that he sent to combat. as a president of texas a&m he signed diplomas for a lot of

people who went to war and then signed the papers that sent the young men that went to war and had to sign the letters to the parents. he says i want to be buried among the young men and women who died in iraq. >> he also knows there is some of the biting criticism of the president and administration in the book. some in military and political circles wondering loudly if he felt like he couldn't get anything done, if he was so dissatisfied, why not resign? do you think that is a valid question? >> i do. in the book he says there are several occasions where he felt close to it. how many times did henry kissinger threaten to resign. it is not entirely new to be

frustrated in government. i think the level of dysfunction ality troubled bob gates. he came in when america walked big on the stage and left when america is easing off the stage and the government is not running as well as it should and i think he feels an enormous sense of responsibility to the young men and women in uniform. >> we have been talking about criticisms targeting the president. both joe biden and hillary clinton did not escape his criticism either. he said of joe biden i think he has been wrong on every major foreign policy issue over the past decade. of -- do you think that is going to leave a mark?

>> he does say of vice president biden he is a man of integrity. no question they had deep conflicts over policy. i was surprised and i think it is unfair to joe biden. but the book i have to say is a much more positive book about hillary clinton. i talked to him several times about this. he has high regard for her. i think what he said she told the president that she shared a lot of his frustrations as did leon panetta. they all felt the white house was too controlling. most controlling since the days of richard nixon is what he said. >> we have yet to hear from bob gates himself about the book. what questions would you have for him when he comes out to release his book?

>> i think you have first line of questions why write the book. that is important to understand but i think it has everything to do with this sense oflotomy. i think it is important to ask the question of how to handle public institutions well. he led texas a&m. >> if he couldn't do it what could be done? >> that's a good point. if bob gates couldn't do it because he is so effective. he is one of the wise men of our time. they call him yoda inside the obama white house. there may be a reason why that is true. i think we have to understand how -- he can help us sort out, i think, how can we get this right so we have a government which is operationally as effective as it should be.

i think it is important to understand that as much criticism as he has in here he doesn't seem to be saying that the white house was too political or so political that we distorted policy. it is more how hard it it is to get things done. i don't think he is saying the president cut and run iraq or afghanistan. >> and nuance that is important to get out and important to hear from him. and important to point out what can be learned from this is a great point. >> absolutely. i think this -- i know people are going to feel stunned. at the end of the day this is not a man looking for financial gain. this is a man trying to help the country and trying to contribute one more big effort of public service. >> see you soon. let's take a look at our headlines. new developments on a story we have been following closely.

about this. somebody obviously told him something about what your brother did that he found compelling. it is easy to dismiss dennis rodman and you probably should. however, are you concerned that his vehemense reflects north korea's confidence in him? >> i was shocked by his words. i'm not sure where he is getting his information. i'm not sure how much credence i would give to his outbursts. he is not an authority on this case at all. and i don't think he has any kind of position to remark on this case especially after making it clear he has no intention to help. >> right. concern is that somebody must have told him something because he was very passionate that he

knew something, kenneth bae is bad and that is why he is there. the challenge will be getting north korea to assess its position. >> right. it is hard to know who he was talking to and what the opinions that he was reflecting. i certainly hope that is not the case. we understand and have to accept that north korea has passed judgment on my bruger in their courts. i'm not in position to dispute that. had you ever, we do know for certainty that kenneth bae never had hostile intentions against the dprk. i'm sorry that his intention to help were deemed hostile against the state. i can say he never had intentions to overthrow the government. >> the silver lining is that your brother's situation is getting attention. many may be coming to it for the

first time. the north korean regime says that he was an enemy of the state. they used statements like jer co operation. and your brother, they say, admitted to the allegation. do you believe he had anything to do with these allegations? >> it is hard to say. about the confession it is hard to say. but kenneth was there legally with permission as a businessman and he led 18 tours over two years as a tour operator into north korea. and he had built working relationships and didn't have any reason to suspect he would have trouble because that was his livelihood and he had a passion for introducing the west

to this side of north korea he found to be what he called purity of the people and the land. and that was his job and his passion. and he is a man of faith. i'm afraid that his christian convictions may have gotten him in trouble. >> he was not running an underground railroad that you are understanding? >> no. >> because that is important. that goes to the substance of what they say. now to the idea of how to get him out. this is not the uae. the u.s. has well developed relationships with the uae. here with north korea there is almost no diplomatic energy going on. what is your best information about the u.s. state department, what they are doing and what they say they can do? >> you know, we can beg our case and plea all that we want to the leaders of dpk to show mercy and

grant amnesty and let kenneth go. i don't think -- i think it will take more to bring him home and i think it is going to take more immediate intervention by the united states government to bring kenneth home. and i don't know exactly what that is going to look like and what it is going to take. one thing that has been made clear through communications from kenneth through all of the letters and a couple of phone calls he has been allowed to make over the last 14 months that it is going to take help and intervention from our government to secure his release. >> and do you believe you are getting any help? is it about more help or the right help? are you satisfied with what is happening on our state side? >> kenneth is my brother. i love him. he has been there way too long. every day he is there is way too long. i believe the u.s. government wants to see him home but i

flights out of new york and boston. they cancelled more than 1,800 flights blaming the crippling weather and new pilot rules. thou they say they leave it up to thousands of passengers. this has been back and forth on who is to blame for all of this. >> absolutely. you know the weather was such a big story but somehow jet blue became the story as customers started criticizing the airline and how they were handling the weather disruptions. now the airline is trying to save face thousands of jet blue passengers are finally reaching their destination. >> we are going to get you home. >> as the airline tries to get back on track and bruising the

public's opinion of the airline. now it is in damage control. >> i absolutely think we did the right thing because when you are doing things for safety reasons not only of our people but our assets and our customers i think we are doing them the best service possible no matter how hard the short term pain is. >> reporter: in a conference call tuesday airline said cancellations impacted 150,000 passengers. operations are returning to normal but jet blue predicts the back log could take another day to work through. >> i got the last seat, first flight out. >> reporter: almost every major airline was impacted by the polar vortex but jet blue bear the brunt of the criticism. >> the vast majority of the

flights are to and from the northeast. they were more effected than the carriers that are being compared with. >> jet blue has a history of weather troubles. in a 2007 storm passengers sat for eight hours on the tarmac in new york prompting new federal rules but the airline says it has changed and takes proactive steps to protect passengers. >> when weather is going to win we let weather win. >> reporter: to make good jet blue is offering compensation based on how many times the flights were cancelled. one cancellation $50, up to 20,000 points in round trip flights or $200. so far this morning things look much, much better for flyers specifically with jet blue. only one percent of the flights cancelled.
