his knowledge. let's update you on what he's done. he's fire d a top aid, asked anned a adviser to give up a job. this is for their roles in the shutdown of the bridge for a pay wak against a mayor that would not endorse their boss. today there will be more developments. nearly 1,000 pages of new documents are kpped to be released showing what state lawmakers have found out so far. the fbi is now looking into what happened o see if federal law was violated. there was a lot to talk about. a lot new going on this morning. let's begin with the apology. he apologized more than 40 times in what one person connected with the shutdown, someone else is not saying. here's joe johns. >> reporter: as one figure at the certain of the bridge scandal couldn't stop talking. >> i come out here to apologize.

>> reporter: another had no interest in even starting. >> on the advise of counsel, i assert my right to remain silent. >> reporter: a two-hour press conference, chris christie announced the firing of a key aid, his former campaign manager and assigned much of the blame to the scandal for this man. david wildsteen. >> clearly he played a major role in it. >> reporter: he was in the building next door refusing to answer questions at a legislative hearing about e-mails which implicate him in the september lane closures. he was seen by some as the governor's eyes and ears inside the port authority. the two men go back a long time. even attended high school together. >> was very loyal to the governor. extremely loyal. but i would say a lot of people felt afraid of him because of his direct line to the governor's office.

>> reporter: christie painted a different picture of that relationship. >> i could count on one hand the number of conversations i have had with him. >> reporter: his deputy chief of staff saying he had no idea she ordered the bridge lanes closed. >> this morning i terminated the employment of bridgette kelly effect ich immediately. i terminated her employment because she lied to me. >> reporter: something those who know her say is out of character. >> if you think she's the engineer of all this mess, i cannot believe that. >> reporter: also kicked out of the inner circle, long-time adviser bill stepya. among his e-mails, one calling an idiot. >> reading that it made me lose my confidence in bill's judgment, and you cannot have someone at the top of your

political operation who you do not have confidence in. >> reporter: joe johns, cnn, washington. >> we're hearing from the mayor of fort lee. they asked if he believed what the governor told him. >> i would use them as productive. i thought there was a heartfelt apology, which we accepted and we took governor christie at his word. i'm not sure we have much more of a choice, but we did. it was a sincere exchange. >> farce you're concerned, is this over? or is this just one chapter? >>. there's mounds of documents that still need to be gone through. there's a lot of o folks. there's a large ensemble that's apparently involved in this. there are names that were e dedakted from the texts and e-mails. any reasonable person would reach the conclusion that there's more to come or more

stuff to find out about. at the end of our conversation with the governor, i said governor, am i now on your radar and he chuckled. his response was that fort lee gets i own radar screen. we're hopeful that screen is going to let us know if there's retribution coming our way. we hope it it doesn't come. >> there's also a lot of talk about the victtims of the bridg shutdown. the most high profile, a 91-year-old woman who there were questions about whether she died after an ambulance could not through. now her daughter has a more definitive take on what happened. >> my first reaction would it really have affected but apparently it may have. it's not good. >> you think it would have had any impact on the final result

of your mother? >> i don't think so. i think she was 91 and i believe in my heart that she was gone when the ambulance got there. >> paul is in washington this morning. just a remarkable day to watch in politics. what's your sense of day two of what chris christie does next? is this behind him? >> the questions are going to keep coming. as you both just reported, there's tons of more documents that are going to be released by the committee investigating. this thing is far from over. chris christie did a couple things he had to do. he fired closest aids. he took action. he apologized. he was contrite, humble, embarra embarrassed, not the typical way you see chris christie. by saying he's had no knowledge, he's given himself little wiggle room. this story is going to stick

around for quite some time and he n of the woods. >> one of the things people are wondering is when would republicans jump to the defense of chris christie? we started to see it happen a little yesterday. governor hailey posted something on facebook saying i watch my friend work through a difficult situation today. he did the right thing in taking responsibility in a tough situation. that's the kind of leadership that earns him the huge level of trust he has in new jersey. that's gov support from the governor. if you look at the comments on the facebook page after that post, it's a different planet altogether. the rank and file grass root republicans really put on scathing responses. governor hailey, conservatives want nothing to do with chris christie and goes on and on like that. has he created a problem for himself on the right? people he will need if he runs for president? >>. those are the base voters who

voted big numbers in the primaries and caucuses. he's considered a likely contender if he decides to jump in and make that run. let's be honest. chris christie, the base of the republican party never loved chris christie. they were a little suspect of him. pragmatic, willing to work with democrats. . they remember his speech in 2012 where he didn't help mitt romney much but talked more about himself. he hugged president obama after superstorm sandy. they remember his attacks on senator rand paul. they were not in love with chris christie before this and this may give them more ammunition. but overall, it's been muted. the responses have been muted. you mentioned nicki hailey saying good things, but there's not been a the lot on either side.

what's interesting about nicki hailey is he's the chairman of republican governors association. she's up for reelection. one of his tasks is to talk about them as they go for reelection. interesting dynamic this year. >> whab what about the 900 pages of documents? any preview of what's in the documents? >> we don't have any preview yet of what's going to be in there. you got. to think more communications, more e-mails and will it close the line to chris christie or not? that's the big question. he said, no, i had no knowledge of this. there's a lot of stuff that could change the situation over the next couple hours, couple days, couple weeks. the story is far from over. >> paul, thank you. what paul said is right. he's moved this to the investigation. but there will be an investigation and there's a lot of documents for people to go through. not over yet. he helped himself yesterday. happening today in

washington, yet another vote over obamacare. the house plans to vote on two measures that republicans say would strengthen security requirements for the health care website and require weekly reports on how the site is doing. but this time the bills do not seek to repeal the health care law. republican leaders say they are not focused on that anymore. they want to fix specific parts of the law now that it's in effect. the fight continues over extending jobless benefits. both sides seemingly locked in over the latest compromise offer. the deal would send checks to more than a million americans. democrats want to pass a ten-month extension that would cost $18 billion. republicans are complaining they haven't been offered a chance to make their own proposal. >> procespects do not look goodn that. breaking overnight. a diplomat at the center of a crisis is heading home despite federal charges here in the u.s.

against her. she was arrest ed back in december accused of visa fraud sparking condemnations in desperate efforts by john kerry. despite the charges, india would not wave her diplomatic immunity. the biggest news on wall street and your money today, the jobs report. k expectations are high. forecasting 193,000 jobs were add added in the month of december. 7% unemployment. that means it's at lowest level in about five years. deutsche bank dropping. as for the job gains if that forecast is right, the economy will have created 2.3 million jobs last year. we haven't seen job creation like that since 2005. that's right, the best year for job creation since 2005. but look at what we lost in 2008

and 2009. in four years the economy still will not have made back all of the losses if today's predictions come true. we're 1.4 million jobs in the hole. as for wall street, this is a report investors have been waiting all week for. stock futures are up slightly. any moves won't happen until the jobs report is released. asian markets are mixed. european stocks are moving higher. the big story comes in four and a half hours. >> if this number is good or better than expected, people will look at the economy in a completely different way. new overnight from us. dennis rodman's losing basketball team returning home from north korea. but rodman is nowhere in sight. why the controversial

>> we have heard from two contacts that dennis rodman would be going to the north korean ski resort with kim jong-un. he was educated in switzerland so he likes the skiing as well. also one of our contacts said e he will spend the next couple days just hanging with kim jong-un. we have no way of knowing how accurate that is. you mentioned the issue of kenneth bay. rodman sparked up a fire storm saying he wouldn't push for it, but everyone has been talking about it. it's put the bay issue front and center and u.s. government conce concern. the fed is saying that kim jong-un knows very well that bay's family, supporters and the u.s. government want him home and want him home now. i asked charles smith if rodman may be bringing bay home with him and that he just gave me a rye smile.

time in nine months. the 29-year-old has been locked up in the united arab elm rats. it took months for formal charges to be filed and now for a conviction. now he's speaking out about what happened to him. >> i think there's a misconception that i broke a law. i did nothing wrong. there was nothing legal about the video. i was tried in a textbook kangaroo court and convicted without any evidence. >> he understandably say z he has no plans to return and a reminder that these places spending money making sure they are open. but they are not at all like our legal systems. breaking overnight, a lot of people in a major water emergency. it's now a federal emergency. the white house signed on to a

disaster declaration after a chemical spill contaminated a river that serves as the main source of water for 200,000 customers. they are being told do not drink the water, don't bathe in it it, don't cook or wash your clothes. it's not clear how dangerous the chemical is for humans, but a lot of people have been flooding emergency rooms to get checked out. some hospitals have cancelled elective surgeries and stores are running out of bottled water there. this is a very serious there. dwoming overnight, just released court documents provide the first evidence possibly linking former nfl star aaron hernandez to an unsolved drive by double homicide in boston. a search warrant reveals he was inside an suv when two people were gunned down. no charges have been filed in the case. hernandez is charged with first-degree murder in the shooting death of odom lloyd.

a new call for gay marriages to be recognized. they have asked eric holder to extend federal rights to couples that have married in utah. that despite the governor there saying that the state will not recognize the marriages as a court appeal moves forward. the state attorney general says local clerks can finish marriage paperwork if it happened before the supreme court put the marriages on hold. it's very murky what is going on there and it's a troubling situation for more than a same-sex couples who tied the knot in utah since december when a judge ruled that the ban was unconstitutional. coming up, a flooding nightmare in florida. a rain buryi ining communities r water. the latest, next. ♪ ♪ ♪

that, though he didn't really answer the question. it's interesting what rudy giuliani said. he knows a lot about this. a former federal prosecutor who became a republican politician, a northeastern republican never beloved by the conservatives. ran for president in his own campaign. suffered because of things that happened. a lot of comparisons between the two you could say. >> let's talk about 2016, i can't resist. even the democrats have come out and said christie did a good job yesterday. he lives to fight another day. that doesn't mean there's no baggage from this. christie has suffered a political impact here. he's going to have to be careful about how he treats reporters and people in general. he's also lost someone very, very crucial to his political ambitions. >> you're absolutely right on all these accounts. you'll hear sound bytes from yesterday's news conference come back to haunt him and change the

way he has to interact with other politicians. he may be meeting in presidential debates and the pesh you're talking about who was forced to step down was bill steppen. he was his campaign manager. this guy is one of the closest political aids to chris christie. somebody who christie was praising just a month ago and saying this guy would be doing a lot of things for him down the road. he was supposed to be taking over for the head of the republican party in new jersey. also in the governors association. all that gone. this is something that will hurt chris christie. >> one of the three legs of the political stool. part of the triumphant that was leading him to power and would have been a key player. >> i wonder if this scandal would make chris christie a different candidate than he would have been without it? a more presidential-sounding person. >> that's a good point.

a lot of republicans yesterday saying we like chris christie and his toughness and americans want a tough person as president. somebody who will fight for the country and be strict. but at the same time, there's been a criticism of chris christie that he's a bully. will this change that? it it might might. stay tuned. congress will take another vote today over obamacare. two bills actually are before the house that republicans say would strengthen security requirements for the health care website. also require weekly reports on how the site is doing. the bills do not seek to defund or repeal the health care law. republican leaders say that's not their goal anymore. they are now focused on fixing specific parts of the law now that it's in effect. extending jobless benefits remains a battle in the senate. the prospects seem to be dimming with both sides unable to reach a deal. this consent -- this bill would send checks into past more than

a million americans. this would cost about $18 billion and would be offset by budget cuts or extending the l sequester. republicans are complaining they hadn't been consulted. the real issue is her not being offered a chance to make amendments to the bill. afghanistan could release dozens of detainees as soon as today and some are accused of killing americans. afghan president hamid karzai says there's not enough evidence to hold those men, but the obama administration say the men are dangerous criminals. this comes as the u.s. and afghanistan still unable to come to terms over a long-term security agreement. we're finding out details of a new report due out today about sexual assaults in military academies. the report from the defense department says bad behavior by academies might be contributing to the sexual assault problem in

the military overall. it it calls for more training for athletes and coaches of the academies. breaking overnight, she's on her way home. an indian diplomat the center of international crisis. she was arrested back in december accused of visa fraud. that sparked an international diplomatic crisis between the u.s. and india. her country refused to waive her diplomatic immunity so she could not be arraigned. she got an a plane overnight insists she's innocent. we're getting a look at fidel castro. the 87-year-old castro hasn't been seen in public since april of last year. official newspapers carried a photo of him attend pg the opening of an art studio. the best jobs report since 2005. that's what we're expecting later this morning. the job market ended 2013 on a high note.

in less than four hours, we'll know for sure. economists surveyed expect this number, 193,000 jobs added in december. that's 2.3 million new jobs, the strongest in eight years. unemployment expected to hold at 7%, but one big problem area here is still the long-term unemployment. how long is a person out of work? 17 weeks, that's just over 4 months. the longer you're out of work, the harder it is to find a job. the odds are 31% if you have been out of work for five weeks. 9% after one year. the numbers span from former managers making six figures to factory workers. the jobs report is a big player on wall street. futures are up 30 points. europe posting modest gains as well. asia is mixed because of concerns over china's economy. this jobs report is a big piece

trapped cars. what's going on? >> reporter: security officials are trying to figure out if there's any link to the killings and sochi olympics. two of the people killed were taxi drivers. all the vehicles were fairly cheap, low-cost vehicles and the attacks seemed to bring to police on to the site of the different murders. four murder sites, four different vehicles involved. then an effort in one case to detonate explosives and another the police able to diffuse the explosives. the same type of handgun used in all six killings. but as yet, security officials here not yet saying whether this was directly linked with a terror group related to the olympics or a local issue. normally we're told this area did you want have a high level

of terrorism so it's causing a bit of concern here. >> do you know what role u.s. security teams including fbi agents are playing in the preparations for the olympics there? >> reporter: we know from l direction of the fbi that there are at least a dozen law enforcement and other federal security officials here in russia already. at least a dozen of them in moscow. he himself has had personal contact and the fbi has had regular contact with the counterparticipacounte counterparts here in russia. they say they are ready for the olympics. they have rehearsed it. they have the sort of lead role in providing security. but from what we understand from the director of the fbi, he has particular concerns over sochi. he says this is going to be a particularly difficult olympics from a security perspective because there are no terror threats in the region surrounding the sochi area, so

prosecutors have filed no charges in that case. hernandez is charged in a separate case with first-degree murder in the shooting death of odom lloyd. a guilty plea in a sexual assault case that drew national attention. prosecutors reaching a deal with matthew barnett over claims he assaulted daisy coleman. her family claims earlier charges were dropped because he's politically connected. after a second review by a special prosecutor, he was put on probation and ordered to apologize. >> to analyze evidence in this case there was insufficient evidence to go forward on a sexual assault. >> a misdemeanor charge when barnett pled guilty accurately reflects the conduct for which he should be held accountable. >> coleman was not in court, but she was grateful barnett took responsibility by pleading

guilty. gay rights advocates are demanding the federal government recognize same-sex marriages in ut utah. the human rights campaign asked eric holder to treat the marriages as legal for federal purposes. more than 1,000 same-sex couple ls tied the knot in utah since december when a judge ruled that the ban there was unconstitutional. now the ban has been reinstated. more rain coming coming to florida's treasure coast already drenched in damage by some bad weather. six inches of rain fell in the west palm beach area causing severe flooding and leading to collapsed roadways. residents have never seen rain this bad. we were talking about west palm beach. even in hurricanes, they haven't seen rain like this. asking could it have been the result of a tornado? >> all of a sudden, a big bang

good morning. welcome back to "early start." it's friday. it's jobs friday. this is the day wall street has been waiting all week. a major jobs report will be released at 8:30 eastern. the strongest job growth for the year since 2005. if forecasts are correct, we're learn 2.3 million positions were added in 2013. some of the biggest name. s on wall street have been raising expectations. e they have been sharpening their pencils saying we are more optimistic about the economy than a few weeks ago. the evidence is coming in strong. stock futures are creeping higher this morning. we'll bring it it to you live. the downside is we still haven't dug out from the jobs lost in the recession. it will still take five years to get back to full employment.

the positive side is the best year since 2005. for the first time ever on capitol hill, the majority of congress members are millionaires. it it warms my heart. new data shows 268 congress members have an average net worth of at least $1 million. that's up from 257 last year. the richest republican daryl oois is a. he's worth more than $400 million. largely self-made because of his car alarm business. congress debates unemployment benefits. >> i almost went into car alarms. i should have. >> cell phones would have been good too. sorry, journalism. finally, it's good to be a boss. bosses tend to like their jobs more than the average worker. that's according to a new study.
