bosses are also more satisfied with their financial situation and their family life. so no surprise more plan to stay put and are not looking to move on to something new. moat also think they are paid fairly. we're satisfied with our jobs. >> our bosses rule. "early start" continues right now. chris christie apologetic. i'm sorry coming as 1,000 pages of new evidence from this case becomes public this morning. >> good morning, everyone. i'm john berman. >> and i'm christine romans. it's 5:00 a.m. in the east. there could be more stunning revelations today for chris christie and the political

scandal putting him in the center of the political spotlight. he says he's embarrassed and humiliated and sorry for what he claims happened without his knowledge. he's now fired a top aid and asked an adviser to give up a job for their roles in a shutdown of traffic on the very busy george washington bridge during last year' gubernatorial campaign. apparently it was political payback against a mayor who wouldn't endorse their boss. documents are expected to be released today. a source says the fbi now looking into what happened to see if federal law was violated. even though christie apologized, one person connected with the shutdown is not talking. joe johns begins our coverage. >> i come out here to apologize. >> another had no interest in
2:02 am
even starting opinion >> on the advise of counsel, i assert my right to remain silent. >> reporter: a two-hour press conference, chris christie announced the firing of a key aid, his former campaign manager and assigned much of the blame to the scandal for this man. david wildsteen. >> clearly he played a major role in it. >> reporter: he was in the building next door refusing to answer questions at a legislative hearing about e-mails which implicate him in the september lane closures. he was seen by some as the governor's eyes and ears inside the port authority. the two men go back a long time. even attended high school together. >> was very loyal to the governor. extremely loyal. but i would say a lot of people felt afraid of him because of his direct line to the governor's office. >> reporter: christie painted a different picture of that relationship.
2:03 am
>> i could count on one hand the number of conversations i have had with him since he started at the port authority. >> reporter: his deputy chief of staff saying he had no idea she ordered the bridge lanes closed. >> this morning i terminated the employment of bridget kelly effective immediately. i terminated her employment because she lied to me. >> reporter: something those who know her say is out of character. >> if you think she's the engineer of all this mess, i cannot believe that. >> reporter: also kicked out of the inner circle, long-time adviser bill stepian. once slated to be the head of the gop. among his e-mails, one calling the mayor an idiot. >> reading that it made me lose my confidence in bill's judgment, and you cannot have someone at the top of your political operation who you do not have confidence in. >> reporter: joe johns, cnn, washington.
2:04 am
>> this morning we're hearing from one of the key player, the mayor of fort lee, new jersey. that's the town that suffered the most from shutdown. he and chris christie met late on thursday. anderson cooper asked the mayor if he now believes what the governor is telling him. >> i would use them as productive. i thought there was a heartfelt apology, which we accepted and we took governor christie at his word. i'm not sure we have much more of a choice, but we did. it was a sincere exchange. >> as far as you're concerned, is this over or is this just one chapter that's done? >> there's mounds of documents that still need to be gone through. there's a lot of folks, there's a large ensemble that's apparently involved in this. there were names dedakted from the texts and e-mails. so i think any reasonable person would reach the conclusion that
2:05 am
there's more to come or more stuff to find out about. the at the end of the conversation with the governor, i did say to him, i guess a little sarcastically, governor, am i now on your radar? he chucked. he said fort lee gets its own radar screen. we hope we know if there's retribution coming. we hope it didn't come. >> there's much talk about the impact including a 91-year-old woman who died after an ambulance couldn't get to her on time. her daughter as a different take on what happened. >> my first reaction would it really have affected but apparently it may have. it's not good. ambulances are late going to or from a hospital. >> you think it would have had any impact on the final result for your mother? >> i don't think so. i think she was 91 and i believe in my heart that she was gone when the ambulance got there.
2:06 am
>> that's what mayor was so concerned about. all the complaints from ems, school buss, late to school because they couldn't get through the traffic because the bridge was backed up. >> this effects people in ways they understand. everyone knows what it's like to sit in traffic. a lot of questions about what happens going forward. let's bring in political editor paul steinhouser. great to see you. paul, i want to ask you this. we all judged the performance. let's talk about today. let's talk about tomorrow. what questions still remain for governor chris christie? >> there are a host of questions that still remain. chris christie said he had no knowledge of this. but as you just mentioned, 907 pages of documents will be coming out today from that committee that was investigating this controversy. so there could be a lot of questions that will arise as we pour through the documents. other investigations, a civil lawsuit, this thing is far from over.
2:07 am
why did chris christie not take action earlier? this controversy has been going on for a couple months. you had the major resignations last month. why didn't chris christie take bigger action earlier? a host of questions remain for chris christie. but john, he did a the lot of things right in the news conference. he fired close aids. that's important. he took action right off the bat, within 24 hours. he apologized a number of times. he took every question. an hour and 48 minutes. he was humble, humiliated and embarrassed. he lost that traditional swagger and luster that we know from chris christie. so he did a lot of things right, but by denying or saying he had no knowledge of what was going on with his closest aids, he's kind of given himself very little wiggle room as we go forward. this is far from over. >> people who criticized him as a bully in the past, democrats who don't like him or even some
2:08 am
republicans who don't like him and his manner, i think for them, nothing has changed. tell me a little bit about inside the republican party. maybe the divide among republicans about the performance yesterday. >> that's a great point. as we all expected, democrats were going to attack on this. possibly a front runner in the next race for the republican nomination. but the real reaction is from the republicans. there was a lot of -- there wasn't a lot of reaction. from those that did speak out, you saw a shift in attitude. there was some attacks of chris christie early from conservatives who never loved chris christie because he's willing to work with democrats. but after his news conference and a slight shift in tone from some of these conservatives, that's the real thing to look at going forward. what skconservatives say, they never really liked this guy. >> i had an example of this from a key republican primary state
2:09 am
south carolina. the senator there lindsey graham. i want to show you what he said before the news conference because it's telling. it seems to me the whole bridge thing reenforces a narrative that's troublesome about this guy, he's kind of a bully. that was before the news conference. this is what lindsey graham said after the news conference. he said i'm impressed with the contrite nature in taking responsibility. in today's political environment it was a breath of fresh air and i think he handled it it as well as he could. that's a big change from a key senator from the key state. >> very important change. you also saw that coming from conservative bloggers. and a the lot of republicans are trying to make the contrast between somebody they don't like a lot more and that's president obama. at least chris christie did fire people. president obama hasn't fired yet. you're hearing a lot of that from the right as well.
2:10 am
in the senate, the fight continues today over extending the jobless benefits. both sides seemingly locked in and are arguing over the latest compromise offer. that deal would send $300 a week to more than a million americans. the k democrats wants to pass a ten-month extension. they want it to be offset by budget cuts. republicans are complaining they haven't been offered a chance to bring their own. an international crisis is now heading home despite federal charges against her here in u.s. she was arrested back in december accused of visa fraud. this sparked condemnation from officials and some rather december rat diplomats. but despite the charges, india would not waive her diplomatic immunity. she the got on a plane overnight insisting she's innocent. the biggest news for your

2:18 am
maybe dennis rodman is going skiing. we know that kim jong-un was educated in switzerland. he had a resort open over christmas. another source told us that rodman will be hanging with kim jong-un for the next couple days. now as for the issue of kenneth bay, of course, a fire storm when rodman said repeatedly that he wouldn't be bringing up the issue because it it wasn't his job. he wasn't a politician. but that was a reverse diplomacy, because since that moment that put the issue front and center of media and u.s. government concerns. i think it's fair to say even though rodman may not have brought it it up and kim jong-un knows well that bay's family, supporters and u.s. government want him home now and right now. but we put it to the power forward that did return home today said we asked him, is there a possibility that rodman

has apologized, a lot, saying he was deceived, humiliated and disappointed. today a lot more going on in this. the state committee plans to release hundreds of pages of documents from its investigation. cnn has learned that the fbi is now looking into the shutdown as well for possible federal charges. christie insists he knew nothing about it it. as you will hear, he apologized again and again and again. >> i am responsible for what happened. i am sad to report to the people of new jersey that we fell short. we fell short of the expectations that we have created over the last four years for the type of excellence many government that they should expect from this office. but i have repeatedly said to them that while i promise them the best governors office i can give to them, i can never promise them a perfect governors

office. so when i find those imperfections, those mistakes, those lies, my onbligation as a chief executive of this state is to act. i had no knowledge or involvement in this issue, ins i planning or its execution and i am stunned by the stupidity that was shown here regardless of what the facts ultimately uncover. this was handled in a callous and indifferent way and not the way this administration has conducted itself over the last four years and not the way it it will conduct itself over the next years. i will do everything in my power to ensure the people of new jersey that and i thank them for their willingness to consider my apology on behalf of this
2:33 am
government. and you're darn right, what they did hurt the people of new jersey, hurt the people of fort lee and i'm sorry to all the people of the state that they have to be occupied with this matter. it's embarrassing. as i said before, the whole matter is humiliating to e me. all you can do as a person when you know this is to stand up and be genuine and sincerely apologize and hope the people accept your apology. i think i have built up enough good will over time with people of new jersey that i'm hopeful they will accept my apology. >> 108 minutes of i'm sorries and a different tenor. let's bring in paul stienhouser in washington this morning. talk about the different tone from chris christie e yesterday. is that going to be a new chris
2:34 am
christie as we head toward 2016? >> it just may be. a very good point. what was gone from this news conference is the change in his tone, his traditional swagger was gone. instead we had a contrite politician who said a number times he was humiliated and apologized a number of times. he did a lot of things that were right that he needed to do. he fired close aids. he took action right away within 24 hours. that was an important step. he was also contrite and that was key. but what this news conference was allow chris christie to fight another day and that day starts today with the 907 documents that will be released by the state senate committee that was investigated. there are other investigations on the federal level as well that could happen. possibly a civil lawsuit. so a lot of questions remain.
2:35 am
chris christie does not give himself much wiggle room by saying he had no knowledge. he leaves himself very little wiggle room as we go forward. >> it is refreshing. he was pretty definitive. >> a lot of apology there is. you talked about the legal future. 900 pages people will be pouring throu through. let's talk about the political future. one thing that poll it tigss run into is when adviser z say you have to be different. tone down this ses a peck of yo character. chris christie yesterday said i'm not a bully. that's a phrase that's going to be played back again and again and again. how careful will he have to be going forward about how he acts in public and treats other people? >> very careful. you may see a different chris christie now in his interactions with the media, with reporters and news conferences. you saw it it yesterday. if you watch the news conferences, it's a tough give
2:36 am
and take between him and reporters. it was not that way yesterday. you can see a very different crist krst as he deals with other politicians. maybe even republicans on the presidential level. we consider chris christie a likely contender for the republican nomination in 2016. so you could see definitely a different change in tone from chris christie going forward. >> what about the reaction in republican circles? some commentators talking about irs and benghazi. they are moving on from chris christie trying to talk about other things. supporters of christie, those are criticizing him. he was never a base candidate for them. talk to me about that different reaction among republicans. >> you are seeing some republicans defend him. rudy giuliani is one. he did it it on cnn last night. nicki hailey putting out a statement. that was the exception. most republicans didn't want to talk about this saying it was a matter they knew little about. you make another good point as well. chris christie was never beloved
2:37 am
by the base of the republican party. conservatives haven't trusted chris christie. they consider him willing to work with democrats and they look back to his embrace of president obama of soouch storm sandy. this will not help him with those people and those voters are key if he has presidential ambitions, which we know he probably does. >> thank you so much. one of those telling comments came from senator rand paul who will likely run against chris christie for president. rand paul, his response was everyone knows how frustrating it can be to be caught in traffic. a little shif right there. congress is going to take another vote over obamacare. two bills are before the house. bills that republicans say would strengthen security requirements for the health care website. it would also require weekly reports on how the site is doing. the bills do not seek to defund or repeal the health care law. something republicans have been trying for a couple years now.
2:38 am
republican leaders that's not their goal anymore. they are focused on fixing specific parts of the law now that it's in effect. developing news overnight, extending jobless benefits does not look like it will happen in the senate today. still a battle with both sides unable to reach a deal to resume sending checks to more than a million americans. democrats now say they want to pass a ten-month extension that would cost $18 million. republic republicans are complaining they are not being allowed to make amendments. only 24 hours ago it it looked like a deal and now it looks like it's in serious trouble. >> we'll watch that for you. afghanistan could release detainees today. some are accused of killing americans. hamid karzai says there's not enough evidence to hold those men. the obama administration says they pose threats to the afghan people.
