shots fired. i grabbed a kid, three people fell to the ground. grabbed the ki grabbed the kid and the mom was following me. >> i didn't know how safe it was to keep running in the open, so when i saw people running into that store, that's where i went. we were in the fitting room area. where do you go? you're in a fitting room area. you're just as vulnerable. >> erin mcpike has more from outside the mall in columbia, maryland. >> the clwhen the shots rang ou and terrified so many people here because the shooting took place at a second level store that overlooks the food court. the shooter shot two young adults brianna benlolo and

25-year-old tyler johnson. employees of zoomies. the shooter then took his own life but couldn't identify him hours later because he had so much ammunition on him they needed special teams to come in. a federal investigator told cnn that this could be a domestic dispute, but the investigation, of course, is just beginning. now, federal officials warn it was not a mass shooting but more of a targeted event. five others were injured. one of the gunshot wound and all five were treated and released saturday afternoon. no word yet on when this mall will reopen. we, obviously, will find out more details on that in the coming few days. christi and victor. >> the shooter may have come out of a dressing room yielding that shotgun. >> he may have been the last person that spoke to tyler

johnson, one of the victims. >> he didn't come in through the front door or the front entrance. it was either through the back store room entrance or he just emerged out of one of the dressing rooms on the right hand side. he shot her and then 10, 15, maybe not even 10 seconds later i heard the second gunshot. i basically scrambled out of the store on my hands and knees right by the male employee who was down on the ground, still alive. i yelled shooter, call the police. and i just kept yelling that and people just started running. >> well, police say a third person who was shot in the foot was not even in the store, she'd been on the level below the store. her injury not life threatening. okay, let's move to russia now and the upcoming winter games because defense secretary chuck hagel says the u.s. wants to help russia protect

spectators and athletes at the sochi olympics. including thousands of americans who will be there just to watch. >> but so far moscow has not asked for specific help. to even know there are increasing concerns about possible terror attacks. now, russia is putting on a show of force deploying 40,000 heavily armed police and security officials to sochi. >> cnn international correspondent nic payton walsh is in the host city. hello, nick. >> telling the americans to be careful when they come here, some are worried whether their narrest and dearest should come to sochi to watch them compete. the state department has been warning american athletes not to look too american when they venture out. the ring of steel where i'm standing if they venture out into southern russia. >> the u.s. olympic committee

factors are going to be dangerously cold. wind chill factors could make it feel like 30, 35 degrees below zero. for new york city coming up for tuesday, daytime high, 18 degrees. now, typically in new york city, we would see a high right around 37, 38. but this season has been anything but typical. across the midwest as that frontal system sweeps through. behind it the winds are still very gusty and not to be outdone. across the southeast, atlanta, look at this, temperatures in the 50s both for sunday and into monday. but by tuesday readings in the 30s. that doesn't sound like the caribbean, but compared to the midwest and am to the great lakes and that's a little balmy. even all the way down into portions of florida and new orleans, temperatures drop down into the 30s. christi next hour, victor, i'll talk about what we might expect for the all-important super bowl game. >> everybody is wondering about it. karen maginnis, thank you. still to come, two days

her off a ventilator or if they will appeal. the hospital has maintained all along that they were simply abiding by state law and that they did nothing wrong in their interpretation of the law. smu professor who co-wrote the law said that the hospital got it all wrong. >> i don't see how we can use a provision of the law that talks about treating or not treating a patient in a case where we really don't have a patient. that's not a question of philosophical speculation, in texas and in all 50 states. >> a very emotional day in court for the family having to relive the graphic details from court. an attorney for the munoz family addressed the media after leaving the courthouse. >> this was a sad situation all the way around. we are relieved that eric munoz can now move forward with the process of burying his wife. >> eric munoz the husband has

success this outdoor stadium. the ducks beat the kings 3-0 in this game. now, three more outdoor games and two yankee stadium and one today and one on wednesday and then one at soldier field in chicago on march. so, they're going to have, they're going to have five basically this calendar year in four locations. let's talk a little golfer. the world's number one golfer he missed the cut at the farmers insurance tournament. there is one cut line on friday and then one on saturday. well, yesterday, he missed that saturday cut which is the first time he did that in his career. he blew up, equalled a 79 whi. tiger woods has won this tournament eight times before. for him to shoot a 79 today, obviously, that's why we're talking about it. turning this morning on

but maybe these people feel emboldened to go out and do things publicly because this thing at the mall does still seem to be targeted at these two people, but why are we seeing so many things happen in public places? has something changed in people's heads that they think this is just how i can do it now? >> these shootings that we saw at the colleges and at the mall, it wasn't someone walking into the mall and shooting everybody else that they saw. they all seemed like they were targeted. so, a lot of people, you never know what the shooter is going through. but many times something happened in the last 24, 48 hours before the shooting that kind of kicks it off for them. some precipitating event happens. that's what we usually see. i was a hostage negotiator and when i was talking to them, you always say something happens 24, 48 hours before that that brought them to that particular state. so, is it something that somebody wants to send a message

and somebody carry out a van detta against someone. we don't know. we don't know the motive on all the shootings yet. and we don't know the motive for sure yesterday but right when it happened, i was on air on cnn and i was talking about it and sounded like it was targeted, possibly domestic and we still do not know a motive as of yet. >> would you say people are emboldened to do this so publicly as opposed to, you know, dealing with themselves and private lives behind closed doors. >> we see shootings every day across the country where people are shot in their houses and apartments. murder/suicide. same kind of thing. but she's were carried out publicly. why? we don't know. but usually, as i said, some precipitating event that happened right before that and they were coming out there to send a message to someone. >> mike, when i leave my house and most people have this. this check list. got my keys, my phone, unplug the iron. do we need a check list as we

head into a mall and airport and think, where is the safest place to hide and those things as we go entothose public places? >> i always talk about no matter where you are whether you're at the beach, at a movie, at the mall, situational awareness. be aware of your surroundings. when you go in and you go into a restaurant. as a former cop, i always like to sit with my back to the door and seeing people come in and out and i have a pretty good picture of everything. normal people when they go in, just take a look. when you go to the movie, right before the movie, take a look where the exits are. you don't have to walk around scared all the time, but have situational awareness and know what's going on around you. as we always say, if you see something, say something. absolutely. that goes anywhere you are. if something tells you in your gut that something just doesn't feel right, let somebody know about it. >> so many times after the shooting you hear from the witnesses, i saw the man, he was wearing all black clothe or

people. but he went up to that store on the second flor. >> let's just hypothetically say it was domestic. if it were domestic, you know, at what point, if you know somebody who is depressed and know somebody who is unstable, what is the one thing that would clue you into this americperson also be dangerous to other people. >> you have to determine if someone is a danger to themselves or others. that's one of the things, when you do a civil commitment of someone. me, as a law enforcement officer, i can articulate something that somebody said to me and i thought they were a danger to themselves or others, we can put them on a three-day hold at a mental health facility. when something like this happens and people closest to the people involved, they might not recognize signs that someone is going through something like this. and as i was talking about the precipitating event last hour, that usually something happens. was there a conversation and

about the notion of anti-gay laws in russia and whether we'll see protests against that in the games. i think those are the two different news stories that are causing this winter olympics to get more attention, not for the sports, but there the news elements. >> usually, we hear more hype around the summer olympics, as well. the coverage that is being ramped up is going to help or hurt the situation do you think? >> i think there will probably be more attention on the games because of those two different news elements that are there and also a long history between the united states and russia. a long antagonistic history for many decades. although things have warmed up recently and then cooled again recently, i think that's part of the backdrop for this. notice that nbc which is broadcasting the games hired editor of "new yorker" to come to sochi to be an analyst for them. he had written about russia for so many years, he was going to be an outside expert. nbc has to be prepared to cover
