where right now police vehicles continue to be parked authorities going in and out of that apartment apparently the body of this actor remains inside that unit. the coroner has arrived and a number of reports there on the scene and throughout the area to learn more about this situation. but a tragic loss to the acting word. he is most recognizable for a host of theatric kal as well as film brothprojects. he was an osker winner in 2005 and was nominated for supporting rolls and was nominated for three tony awards and the list is long for his accolades. he has been currently involved

"god's pocket" and "most wanted man". he managed to convince amy adams and jake gill lan hal to be part of his second movie. he has a lit anntany of project. and now the film world mourning the death of this actor. we understand from sources that it is believed that something of the like of heroin was found in the apartment and something like a needle was found in his arm. the body of the actor remains on

the 4th floor. what kind of information are they trying to piece together to get a better understanding of what caused his death. they are trying to determine how long he was in the apartment he was not seen from the 8:00 p.m. last night. a number of nypd police officers their number has swelled to a dozen now. they are trying to keep back the number of on lookers and have tried to keep back neighbors and on lookers. the nypd crime scene unit vehicle has arrived on the scene. f forensic investigators likely to take hours and the medical examiner is still up stairs.

date with this children this morning. whether it was the issue of him not showing up or others couldn't contact him that is what precipitated this person to go to that apartment and now your sources are telling you the same thing that when going to that 4th floor apartment that is where this body was located that his friend had access to the apartment. he had access and found the lifeless body. is that the information that you are hearing? >> that is what we are hearing as well. it doesn't tell us when and what happened. we know that he was last seen around 8:00 last night. it doesn't clarify for us the time of death. it is something that will take the medical examiner to determine. we might know more about his death. that is the timeline that we are

to the sad passing of this celebrity. more celebrities have descended on new york due to the superbowl and are reacting to the death of this great man. >> reporter: reaction is coming in from everywhere. we did get word from his family a few minutes ago. we got a statement from the family of philip seymour hoffman. who said they were devastated by the sudden and tragic loss and asked for privacy when dealing with the grief. they will not be making a further statement at this time. we have been talking about the arm of addiction and it does make you think of some of the other actors in hollywood that have died untimely deaths from things like this. whether it be heath ledger or corey montey.

reported to you about finding a needle in one of his arps we are hearing this, from law enforcement sources some have said besides finding the two bags containing what they believe to be her wioinheroin, found 8 additional small clear plastic bags that are usually the kind in which heroin is discovered and those were also found in the apartment. it is unfortunate to pass on this as well, but you know that they found the needles in his left arm and he was clothed in the bathroom. they say that they are trying to check for more information about how he acquired the drugs but the various bags were stamped with ace of hearts and ace of

i tell my patients if this becomes a common problem and you don't deal with this you are not going to see 50. we don't know if it was a common problem and one that he had success with recovery. the second relapse is a treacherous group. the disease takes full advantage of it. the amazing thing is that he died of heroin and not pills. the old fashioned way was a hot shot with the needle in the arm. unfortunately that is what happened here it appears. finally, just because he had a chronic fatal illness does not diminish the man, the talent.

cnn producer. tell us what you know about see more hoffman. you have children in the same school. >> he was the most regular parent that you would imagine. you never saw photographers and crowds around and he would ride around the neighborhood and put his kid on his bike and take them to school. he was very much a part of this community. i don't think that people thought of him as being anything all that. especially because he didn't act like a guy that was special. he was approached by somebody that you didn't know. he pushed it too hard. he wasn't a guy that liked that attention. i remember that when he won his oscar and showed up at the school for the first time people were like yeah, congratulations.
