now. >> announcer: this is "new day" with chris cuomo, kate bolduan and michaela pereira. >> good morning, happy monday. welcome to "new day." it's 6:00 in the east. breaking overnight, is the nfl about to get its first openly gay player? michael sam made the revelation in an espn interview this weekend. sam is a first team all american as a senior this past season, a shoo-in for the nfl. what is making headlines of course is his sexuality. >> 6'2", 250 pounds, a big guy, a strong guy. you want to see real strength? it's what he's doing right now. >> i'm michael sam, i'm a football player and i'm gay. >> reporter: all american defensive end and nfl hopeful michael sam making history, revealing that he's gay in interviews with espn and the

"new york times." >> i was afraid it would leak out without me actually owning my truth. i wanted to let the world know and tell them, hey, i'm gay, let me tell my own story. >> reporter: if he's drafted this spring, he'll become the first openly gay player in the national football league. >> i understand how big this is. it's a big deal. nothing has done this before, no one has done it. and it's a kind of nervous process but i know what i want to be and i want to be a player in the nfl. >> reaction poured in almost instantly with the nfl releasing a statement of support writing "we admire michael sam's honesty and courage. mike sell a football player. any player with ability and determination can succeed in the nfl. we look forward to welcoming and supporting michael sam in 2014." sam told his coach and his

teammates about his sexual orientation back in august. >> i was kind of scared, even though they already knew. i was still scared of telling them. they supported me from day one. >> reporter: many of his teammates took to social media to rally around this lineman. kentrell brothers tweeted "we are family and we support al of our family, nothing changes. it takes a lot of courage to do what me did and we are behind him all the way." sam launched a twitter account to thank everyone for their support. >> i probably may be the first but i won't be the last. i think on good things is going to come from this. >> now sam is going public now because he wants to tell his story on his terms before the nfl draft. you know, and lest anyone think this is easy and he'll be

welcomed by open arms by all nfl teams, "sports illustrated" did a story where they talked to teams and there are managers who say his draft prospects will drop because of the revelations. the teams don't want the controversy that will surround this. >> regardless, you said it, this guy knows who he is. he is very strong and very confident, he knows who he is. >> it shows how much his teammates respect him that they allowed him to say this. >> and missouri was number five in the nation this year, they play in the s.e.c. this is pro football basically already. this shows that players will accept someone who is gay. if he's accepted there, i really do think there will be a team which brings him into the nfl and will let him play and he plays well. >> i hope the good teams pass on him so the jets can get him. that would be awesome. >> this whole time you've been thinking about one thing. >> at the end of the day he's an

>> the other big story, the icy mix headed to the southeast with advisers in several states. streets being salted ahead of the storm and, tra supplies be brought in. officials saying they're being pro active this time after a couple of inches of snow paralyzed the city just two weeks ago. but will the preparation keep atlanta from repeating the winter weather shutdown. let's get over to nick, who is tracking this story. >> reporter: good morning. officials moving more resources into the metro area to save themselves the embarrassment from just a couple of weeks ago. southerners on alert this morning stocking up on supplies as a imagine winter storm is expected to wallop the region this week. >> this time it is a mixture of some ice and some snow. >> widespread freezing rain, the potential for an ice storm. >> we do know it's going to hit

and it's going to be significant. >> reporter: in georgia, the governor giving the national guard warning well before it comes in. >> we're getting ready, trucks are coming now, workers are coming now. >> reporter: officials trying to stay ahead of the storm this go-round after this gridlock nightmare caught them by surprise a couple of weeks ago. this morning parts of oklahoma, arkansas and tennessee are expected to see snow, sleet, freezing rain. this mess then making its way done to alabama, georgia and the carolinas. snow made for dangerous conditions on sunday in pennsylvania. police say the driver accelerated too fast on the snow-covered road and lost control. nearly 30 injured, at least one in serious condition. this storm pushing its way over from the west where freezing rain, snow and high winds lashed out in washington and oregon. freezing drivers in their tracks.

and in northern california, heavy rains triggered mud and rock slides. >> there's a truck done there that got buried in the slide. >> reporter: isolated flooding also blocked some roads. and back here in georgia, the governor is expected to hold a noon eastern press conference. this winter storm watch expected to last through wednesday. chris, back to you. >> all right, nick, thank you very much. breaking this morning, new video has been released of american ken earth bae at a labor camp in north korea. he's been held there for 15 months. he's saying he's worried about his health. we're hearing a former u.s. ambassador to south korea is in pyongyang this morning. what could this mean? paula hancocks is following this for us live. >> reporter: the former ambassador to south korea has touched down in pyongyang this monday evening. we heard from state-run media.

they simply said that donald greg is in pyongyang and he was there with party. there was no name mentioned of kenneth bae. we have heard from kenneth bae over the weekend. last thursday and friday he was visited by the swedish embassy official in pyongyang. he's basically saying he's being moved back to the special labor camp. he's very concerned about his health. he says he has a back and neck problem here, has a gum infection at this point and he's concerned if he stay there is for several monies, he will be straight back in hospital once again. he did say he wanted to let his family know that he's not giving up hope. >> i stay strong mentally and

spiritually and trying to stay strong emotionally as well. but my main concern right now is that my physical condition, to have labor for eight hours a day for the next couple of months will be difficult. so if they can do something right away would be the best way to do it. >> he says he's already lost ten pounds over the past few weeks. kate and chris, back to you. >> paula, thank you so much for that. >> a second round of syria peace talks is under way. the three-day evacuation and planned cease-fire is casting doubt. what do we know? >> they call it an evacuation, but when you look at these harrowing videos, it appears to be more of an escape. hundreds of women and children

and the elderly running for their lives toward just a few u.n. vehicles. hard to imagine this is actually progress when you see them wedged between u.n. trucks trying to make their way out of that old city that has been under siege for 600 days but it has got i don't know better for them. the day before when a u.n. aid convoy team entered to deliver food and medical equipment, they came under attack. it was terrifying for them for several hours as they couldn't leave and couldn't help the people in the old city. there as a lot of questions whether the evacuation will continue, whether the convoy will be able to enter again. a lot of the people i'm speaking with on the ground in syria very, very cynical about whether more help can reach them in the near term. >> thank you. let's look at some of your other major headlines.

around the gulf. it's going to be a repeat what we saw in the southeast just a few weeks ago. today still warm along the coast but notice overnight tonight, especially when it gets cold, temperatures drop, we start having the threat for some icing. but there are two waves here the second one is the stronger one. potentially 2 inches of snow from the second system. wednesday all wait to thursday we're still talking about the same inching into the southeast. about a quarter of inch of ice could be possible with the system. let's hope they're ready this time and they're not the on ones. that southeast system, if it hangs farther along the coastline, we could see more snow along the coastline and if it goes farther inland, it could be more snow pather inland.

this morning kentucky senator rand paul is taking a once again at bill clinton, calling him a sexual predator while in the white house and calling democrats hypocrites for championing women while supporting hillary clinton. erin mcpike has the story. >> reporter: from benghazi to personal matters, paul certainly seems to be after the clintons. after labelling bill clinton a sexual predator for his affair with monica lewinsky, paul rand is stepping it up calling people who want to raise money for the candidates hypocrites. >> you can't take it from a guy using his position of authority to take advantage of young women

session in which the prosecution called defendant michael dunn's efiance to testify. she was shaken as surveillance video from november 23, 2012 played in court. >> somebody ist shooting. >> what did you hear? >> i heard pop, pop, pop. >> reporter: minutes earlier she and dunn stopped at a jacksonville gas station and parked next to a red suv with a group of teenagers inside. >> what did the defendant say? >> i hate that thug music. >> reporter: what happened next is at the crux of the case. dunn told investigators there was an argument over loud music and then heard threats and fired off shots in self defense. 17-year-old jordan davis was shot and killed. >> i went over this a million

times. and when i put the car in ruverse. it was fight or flight. >> reporter: police say they never found a gun in the teen's red dodge durango. they checked into a hotel and ordered a pizza. she testified they sat by the elevator truly believing police were coming. so let's work through the hot points of this case. joining us now is joey jackson. do you want prosecution or defense? >> i'll do prosecution. i'll let you give your opening statement. defense goes first. >> this is a question about a faulty investigation. it is a question about someone who really felt for their lives. they felt the fear for the fact there was a gun. if the police had done an adequate and thorough investigation in the parking lot

that the teens left they would acquire the gun. he didn't do it but was in fear and that was to preserve his life by unfortunately taking another. >> it is nice to create facts. we cannot do that in the court of law. there is no proof of a gun. i hate that thug music doesn't come from me. that comes from his girlfriend. that is what he said before this altercation began. get in the car he said to the girlfriend. he didn't say stay in the store there is a dangerous situation going on. and he said it was flee or fight. he said he had an option. how does he beat this case? >> in real reality it is a difficult case. you want to create the diversion that there may be a gun and there was a faulty investigation because that is what you have. even if there were a gun it comes down to the point of this. was the gun pointed in his direction? if they had a gun would they not

have used it at that time. what the defense is doing is attacking the investigation in order to create that illusion. and then the second thing that is critical for them to do is to put the jury into his mindset. what was he feeling? was he in imminent fear for his life? tough argument to make. if it is one they make effectively they may have a shot. >> we are playing with the name george zimmerman there about this being an analogue. there was a physical confrontation in george zimmerman. there was a reasonable basis for fear. the jury found that. there was no witness here to corroborate as george zimmerman about him being on the bottom at some point in the fight. george zimmerman after that situation called 911, during it called 911 many times. this man and his girlfriend -- >> consciousness of gift which is critical. >> when you look at the

testimony of his girlfriend obviously she wants to protect and help him. however, when you go to the point she is making, i hate that thug music, what does that do? it gets us into his mind. as a result the prosecution exploits that. point number two as to the girlfriend, what does she say, they were drinking. he wasn't impaired. >> four rum and cokes. >> that is significant. when you put the girlfriend's testimony with what have you i think it is compelling for the prosecution. >> if one juror says i think there was a gun, i do think they got rid of it, they were -- such interesting irony. the authorities on the scene don't treat the kids, the teenagers as suspects. they don't record witness statement because they were shot at. one of them lost his life. now it is being used in the

case. >> it is being used by the defense. >> why didn't you treat them as suspects? >> what the prosecution will do is say there was no basis. had there been a witness that would otherwise suggest there was a gun here or object here or something here the police may have been on notice if there was something of evidentiary value to acquire in the parking lot. they need to suggest of course they left the scene. what do people do when they are shot at? do they stay or attempt to leave? they came back being responsible so they can communicate their story to the police. >> last point. we are in florida. stand your ground. stand your ground was denied here pretrial. do you still need to provet that you couldn't get away in order to trigger self defense? >> what you have to prove beyond that, it is an imminent fear case. i feared for my life.

sympathy but the empathy saying i know what you are dealing with. what have you learned about parental alienation? >> i didn't know anything about it. six out of ten families are going to get divorced. that is a lot of kids out there. my exand her family used this law, an incredible amount of money and tons of lawyers to prevert justice. it was only a mechanism to take my child away. i found all of these other people going througher horrible things whose kids were being poisoned in the same way, this kind of child abuse. >> you started to get thousands of people coming forward about this. you recognize it and started stand up for gus. celebrities hearing about it not just through friendship but also feeling the awareness of the issue wanted to get involved? >> i had an event called stand up for gus because i wanted to bring awareness and raise a lot of money.

and then a foundation started. and within a couple of months stand up for gus became the sort of leading organization because no one has talked about it. thousands of thousands and millions of people that don't have a voice. i really think it is a kin to domestic violence. 40 years ago no one talked about if you heard someone whacking someone in the apartment it was their business until it wasn't okay anymore. it is not okay to remove a parent and for another parent to poison a child. >> i know it is very painful for you. you are now in a court battle. and the law is once again your enemy. use this california law which until they change it says you didn't have a signed contract saying you were going to be the parent. you lose. now constructively what your son's mother is saying is it is not his kid. it is mine. he can't use my kid in whatever

activity he wants to do. that is going to ebe a tough legal fight. >> well, we have to look at what is actually right. i'm not the first person to get a horrible judgment against me. i have a woman who wrote my name as father on our fertility forms. i went into a clinic and i gave my sperm and her egg. why am i a donor. that law is going to be changed because it is unconstitutional. however, as you saw in the videos and voice mails and pictures from every day of my son's life just because some court made a horrible decision will not stop me from being a father. if i can't be with my son i want to leave a path of a noble fight not only for him but other people caught up. i will father him from a distance. i will get him back. >> what is the fight in court? what are you putting forward as

an argument? >> i'm in appeal right now. i think these appeal judges are going to have to see the absurdity of this verdict. also, it was not in the best interest of the child in my case. and this whole parental alienation thing is never in the best interest of the child. it is not just me. it is joe baro and his daughter megan. it is little julia grace who hasn't been with her paternal family for seven years. brook barronne. as i said i can deal with my pain. it is not going anywhere until i have gus back. or i can take it and say we are going to end this phenomenon. >> and for the last year you wearing black is somewhat metaphorical of what you have been dealing with. i know this has been very hard for you personally. how do you live your life when it had been family life? you guys were a family, a new

family. it is not just about having the rings and things anymore these days. there are all kinds of families. what is it like for you to be at 51 weeks and not have your boy? >> every day is a struggle. if you have pain or struggle it connects you to people who also have it so you are not alone. that is what stand up for gus is. this new lawsuit, they are trying to stop me from ever mentioning my son's name in a commercial, charitable or private way meaning they want to stop stand up for gus which has raise money to go to lawyers to represent people fighting for their families for free. if she gets her way and her father, if i am having lunch with you and i mention gus, my son, and someone hears it and i don't have her permission she wants me to go to jail. she wants to take away my constitutional first amendment right. >> and to be clear you're still

had the same reaction that a lot of people had. she looks really thin and i was immediately brought back to the times in my life where i have struggled with eating disorders and thought this next year ahead for her is going to be really challenging. there is a euphoria and an addiction and intoxication that comes along with losing that much weight, the attention you get and watching the numbers click down on the scale and watching clothes change sizes. it all becomes addictive. unless you are emotionally and mentally prepared to stop when you get to a dangerous point that can very easily spiral out of control. >> i want to talk about society's obsession right now with thin. i want to specifically talk about your story. you were a ballet dancer. and you write in this piece about really going to startling lengths. you talk about your struggle

with bolemia and starvation and diet pills. it was around you in the culture you were immersed in. >> it was a dark time and i was at the worst possible age, being a young woman, totally ill-equipped and insecure and not able to deal with the pressures. i was 13, 14, 15 coming into my teenage years. and just not equipped to be in that kind of environment where you're being scrutinized for your weight so much. girls are insecure at that age anyway. i had to go through a lot to pull myself out of that and did successfully. and then later as i talk about in the piece some of that came flooding back in my early 20s. and luckily i had the skills and i was equipped to not get to a dangerous point the second time. but i'm hoping that in some of the training that rachael got on

the biggest loser and i hope she continues to get training they are helping her avoid some of the bad habits and the addictive behaviors that so many people pick up when they get dangerously body conscious and thin. >> it is interesting to see the parallel about the fact that it is a life-long battle, too. i want to talk about the notion of thin and skinny and weight loss. we are obsessed with it in america. lately i think that a bit of that has been bolesterred by the fact that we see rising obesity rates in america and there is a real concern about that. i wonder how we manage to strike a balance between those two. what are your thoughts on that? >> it is trick ey because everyone should want to be healthy. and i am proud of rachael for getting healthy. a show like "the biggest loser" put it in perspective. it is not about who can be the

healthiest but by losing the most weight. at some point you have to stop losing weight. you can't continue to lose weight. you have to bottom out and become a healthy, happy person with healthy habits that you can take forward for the rest of your life. so at some point rachael's got to hit a plateau where she is just healthy. you get so addicted to the losing of the weight. >> that euphoria. >> it is like a drug. if you keep chasing that high and keep trying to lose weight even though you probably don't need to anymore there is really nowhere to go but a very, very dangerous place. >> in a word do you think weight loss competitions are the way to do it? should it be made a competition? >> i think competitions you work at an office and you have seen people pull together and say let's lose weight this month.

journey. beautiful insight of being adopted and the risk and reward of searching for her birth parents. she wrote it in the march issue of "essence" magazine. here is one part of it. so much of who i am on the outside, my skin color, eye color and hair is because of my father, my identitiy tied to a man i do not know. >> it is interesting. i have known from the jump that i am adopted. when you look like this and see my birth family you figure it out. adoption was always such a part of the fabric of our family. and i always knew who i was. but there was something about my birth father because i know that my birth father is jamaican canadian. i get the woman of color that you see today from him.

passed away from a battle with colon cancer. it was devastating. my mom and dad were so fantastically supportive of me and have been in this entire search. i know they are watching. and that helped me because this was a real struggle. but in that. i have learned that there is a silver lining in very dark clouds i found my birth sister. i have a half sister who we look nothing alike yet we do. there she is. i found out that i had a piece of me, i found a piece of me that i didn't realize was missing. i am blessed beyond abundance with sisters and family. >> and hair. >> we know your awesome story. you love telling your story. you are open about it. why did you want to write about it in aing magazine. >> i have dedicated my life to this because i was one of the lucky ones. i know there are many kids out there. i know you, i know you are
