past decades multiple times and left their life to do this. >> you're live in cnn "newsroom." good morning. i'm carol costello. thanks so much for joining he. the clock is ticking in arizona where the governor has a few days left to decide whether to veto a bill that's become a lightning rod in the battle. in effect that bill would allow busines business. in the interview with cnn, republican governor jan brewer says she'll make the right decision for her state. >> the bill is going to hit your desk back in arizona today. you haven't seen hit yet i understand that. you're well aware of what's in it. where's your mind now on what you might do? >> certainly i'm going to go home. when i receive the bill, i'm going to read it and be briefed on it. we have been following it. i will make my decision in the near future. i have until friday or saturday

morning to determine that. >> now i've seen reports of business leaders in your state very upset and afraid of what the damage could be to businesses in your state. super bowl is coming next year and obviously there are other potential problems. is that weighing on you? >> well, of course. i have a history of deliberating and having open dialogue on bills that are controversial to listen to both sides of those issues. i welcome the input and information that they can provide to me and certainly i am pro business. that is turning our economy around. i appreciate their input as i appreciate the other side. >> i get as a governor you have to deliberate. it's your job. as a person and a woman and somebody that understands the plight of all kinds of people, where does your gut lie right now? >> you know, i am a woman. i don't rely a whole lot on my gut. i have to look at what it says

of interest on the table. she's getting pressure from the likes of american airlines. the super bowl is against this bill. the democratic national committee just to give you an example has queried phoenix to ask if they're interested many the 2016 hosting the convention in 2016, one of many cities they're asking. if this bill were to go in effect i can guarantee that would be taken off the table. this would be a bad bill in terms of business.veto. who knows? >> the nation's top law enforcement official is wading into the battle of the same sex bill. he tells that his state does not have to defend laws they feel are e are. this led to integration of

public schools. he told the times, quote, if i were attorney general in 1953, i would not have defended a kansas statue that put in place separate but equal facilities. while the numbers look strong in 2013, there's mixed news on the housing sector in general. cnn chief business correspondent is here to parse the numbers. good morning. >> good morning. that's an important distinction. let's start with last your. best year of home prices since 2005. before the collapse of the housing market. 11.3% is the average increase nationwide. look at 20 big cities. county jail says 11.3% was the gain. all is local. look at the biggest annual gains last year. look at vegas. people added a quarter to home value.

and year out. number one for job business start up, job creation by small businesses. these are suppressing our ability and other business people's ability to tell the arizona story, a story of inclusion, excitement, wonderful futures for young families and dinism. >> this bill is negative to our state. it's impacting our brand in a negative way and discriminatory in nature. >> you've written a letter to governor brewer. it says, quote, arizona will be the center of the world stage. legislation has potential of subjecting the super bowl and major events surrounding it to the threats of boycotts. >> it could pull the super bowl out of arizona. marriott has weighed in on this. american airlines has weighed in. what other businesses are

concerned about this bill? >> well apple has come out and weighed in and personally contact aed the governor. apple is building the largest high-tech facility now in arizona. why proponents of this bill have a hard time understanding is that the apple corporation human resource policies are specifically dedicated towards integrating the community. they make suppliers follow their policies. intel has a specific objective at integrating lgbt people and african-americans in the work force. among major employers, there's no place for discrimination in the work place. there's no place in arizona. we've asked the governor to veto this bill. >> we appreciate it.

on forming the interim government and getting money desperately needed international money to fill the gap so this economy can be reformed. talking about needing $35 billion over two years. the united states said it's willing to be a part of that effort. >> i understand the ukraine's parliament wants to prosecute the former president. how might that work? >> well, ukraine's parliament has issued an arrest warrant for the former president. it says it's carrying out the investigation to what it says is mass murder on the streets of this city last week. that was when ukrainian city forces opened fire on protestors killing dozens. it will death toll is above 80. the parliament has said the international criminal court should investigate. that's a strange move because ukraine is not a signature to

34 degrees in washington right now. let's go to capitol hill and show people this picture. wow. another polar vortex moved into the northeast. it's not going to stick around very long. by this weekend, everything will be back to northrnormal. as i've been saying, spring is around the corner. be careful out there. a study is raising questions about the acetaminophen, active ingredient in tylenol. pregnant women have been told that it's safe to take. studies suggests taking it longer in pregnancies raise you the risk of children getting adhd, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. >> this could potentially be a big deal in terms of talking acetaminophen in overall adhd.

a lot of women take tylenol in pregnancy. in the study of 60,000, more than half took tylenol. women are told don't take ibuprofen and aspirin. those could cause other problems with the unborn baby. finally the idea of fever in and of itself could be problematic. you want to treat with something. this is a big deal. in this study, they found women that took the most tylenol, a day a week for 20 weeks seemed to have the greatest increased risk of having a child diagnosed with adhd. they found the risk nearly doubled in that particular group of women. the risk did go down with the less tylenol women took. the risk is there. that's what they found here in this study that showed the association. i will point out there are a waive and give up couple of things they hyposized. could acetaminophen disrupt the hormones in the developing baby

that led to a problem the way the brain was developing? we don't know what's causing this. these are guesses. this is what researchers are concerned about. they call it potential endocrine disrupter. bottom line, for women that say what am i do do here? real answer is minimize tylenol use. you don't want to have a fever. you've got to treat the fevers. minimize tylenol use. things besides fevers, muscles, aches and pains, find non medication tragedies. it's not what women that are pregnant want to hear. again, i think this is an important study to pay attention to. keep in mind when it comes to acetaminophen use. >> thanks. the three women held captive over a decade receivers honored from the governor. all on hand, all together to receive the governor's annual

chamber of commerce and business leaders came out with a strong message yesterday that they don't want the governor to sign this. this is going to hurt the state of arizona's economy and our image. so i hope that the governor of arizona will veto this and we move on. >> actually, similar legislation is working through at least five state legislatures and feeling arguments of gay rights versus individual religious rights and this morning, in arizona, economic interests are also in play. american airlines, marriott and apple all urging governor brewer to veto that bill. the nfl is also bristling saying it will closely watch the decision which in arizona which is slated to host the super bowl. the nfl moved the 1993 super bowl from arizona because the state's voters refused to make martin luther king day a state holiday. they have a pro business background that could weigh

heavily in her decision. dana bash joins us with part of that exclusive interview. >> jan brewer has been here in washington for a meeting of the national governor's association. i tracked her down at the hotel. she was reluctant to talk about which way she will go specially since she is here in washington. she gets the consequences of her decision. >> the bill is going to hit your desk back in arizona today. you haven't seen it yet, i understand that. but you are very well aware of what's in it? >> where is your mind right now on what you might do? >> certainly, i'm going to go home. when i receive the bill, i'm going to read it and i'm going to be briefed on it. we have been following it. i will make my decision in the near future. i have until friday or saturday morning to determine that. >> now, i've seen some reports of business leaders in your state very upset and afraid of what the damage could be to businesses in your state. the super bowl is coming next year and obviously, there are a lot of other potential problems.

arizona. >> dana, read between the lines for us. what are you hearing behind the scenes? >> she was very, very cautious there, understandably. people in arizona who know her well say they are confident when she says she will do the right thing, for her, that will almost surely mean vetoing this bill. the main reason is, as you heard her say, she considers herself a pro business governor, who above all wants to protect and promote arizona's economic interest. she knows there will be economic retribution against her state big-time if the law is on the books. this is perceived by many as codifying discrimination. she vetoed a very similar bill last year. that was something i was reminded about by somebody who was familiar with her thinking. >> dana bash, thanks so much. this just in, the cnn consumer confidence taking a hit falling from its five-month high. christine romans has more.

good morning. >> good morning, carol. what consumers are saying is that they feel like the economy is improving right now but when they look forward six months, they are concerned it is just not going to last and not going to keep improving. in particular, consumers telling the conference board they are feeling less confident about business conditions, jobs and earnings for companies going forward. consumer confidence slipping from a five-month high. there is a lot to digest as we begin the new year. you have had all this weather that is sort of distorting just how strong things are. you have things going right like the stock market. you have had gdp that continues to grow and has been surprisingly strong considering everything we are enduring and record profits and profits rising for companies. those are the pros in the economy. mortgage rates are rising. interest rates are rising. the weather has been poor. the job situation is still weak here. you take it all together and consumers are saying after being as confident as they were in

thousands of north carolina rest der residents are demanding the largest energy provider take responsibility for cleaning up the dan river. today, they will be delivered to duke energy after several thousand tons of coal ash entered the river from a leaking pipeline. the department of natural resources will start testing to see if fish in the river are contaminated. the dan river is in north central north carolina and used by many communities as its water supply. john camp from wtvd has more. >> reporter: for bill wood and others we talked to who grew up around here, the spill at duke energy's coal ash pond has changed about everything. >> you go fishing in this river? >> i used to. >> reporter: would you do it

now? >> no. >> swim it? >> no. >> reporter: tubing? >> no. >> reporter: you won't be casting a line. what do you think you will be able to do? >> reporter: that's something no one seems to have a handle on, from duke energy to the department of environmental and natural resources. >> we have never had an event like this before. so we are out there looking and determining what the next steps are. federal environmental officials tell us the most visible evidence of the spill is still at the spill site about a mile up the river from where we are now. it is like a sandbar. in this case, a coal ash bar. parts are five feet deep. watch this. watch how fast this water is moving. that's a real problem. we are also told that down the river as far as 70 miles from here, coal ash has been found coating the river bottom. life in the river depends on the

accountability for it. they have the clean-up. so i think the issue here is more of a photo op. but the big issue is whether or not duke energy has, according to the environmentalists, basically, been getting away with this kind of stuff for a long, long time. and whether or not various investigations will actually prove that there has been a much too cozy relationship between the state environmental agencies and this very powerful power company. >> does this stem from the fact that the governor has ties to duke energy? >> yeah. i mean, the governor doesn't just have ties at duke energy. he worked there for almost three decades. you also have to keep in mind that the governor, who has visited the dan river site. he has met with duke energy. he has publicly stated that duke energy must clean this up. his old company must clean this up. he also with the state, sued
