the objects might be drifting. let's point out even if they do identify the objects as coming from the plane that will certainly be a huge break in the mystery. it does not guarantee a rapid discovery of where the aircraft actually is, this area is in very deep water, some of the deepest waters in the indian ocean, an area that is known as something for a garbage path, twirling areas that collect junk. the experts are collecting information on this. i want to go to beijing, where families are waiting for word of loved ones, pauline, what do you hear from the families? because clearly the lack of information and contradictory information is just adding insult and pain for these families. >> reporter: yes, absolutely, we're going into day 13 for beijing where 164 chinese citizens were on board that
10:03 pm
plane. so their families, most of them are in beijing, there is centralized information that we're getting from beijing. i was just in the family conference room when this happened out of australia. it had been originally empty, but when word got out there was this news conference, i started seeing a lot of people filing in. the atmosphere was so tense. you saw people sitting up, hanging onto every single word as john young was speaking there. it was translated into chinese. there is so much frustration because as you mentioned there were so many false leads. they don't know exactly what to make of everything. but as they have been -- discouraged so many times. yesterday, i spoke with a man who said every day he wakes up, he goes through these things at the hotel. he had optimism and he said he hoped for a miracle. that is the word he is using, miracle, he says throughout the day they're getting so little information that they get
10:04 pm
dejected, more and more every day. one thing they want is government officials from malaysia to come here to beijing. they have virtually been ignored. and so now finally we're seeing the malaysian government saying they will send a high level team to beijing. they announced it yesterday. we're waiting to see when they arrive, i should mention also that the chinese families here do say they are very, very grateful for the international efforts. more than 26 countries involved. their one concern is whether or not every country is sharing all the information. all the data that is important, because as we know some of this is very, national security information. anderson. >> as you said going through day 13 for the families, just unimaginable what the last 13 days have been. we'll continue to check with pauline coming from beijing later. the words from john young used in the press conference. very important to repeat.
10:05 pm
he said, credible sight, but indistinct, they do not know clearly what they have been looking at. they can't say for sure it is from any aircraft. they do not know. they say it is possible related to the search. i want to bring in the professor, the crash investigator for more than 30 years, also head of the aviation security international. i appreciate both of you joining us. bill as you listen to this press conference what jumps out at you? what happens next? >> well, the first thing they have to do is put eyes on the debris from the aircraft. i heard you mention earlier the marker bouys, sometimes the team will use the science to not lose the object is drop a marker buoy
10:06 pm
on it. it has a radio yantenna on it. what it does is transmit pieces of data. so if it doesn't move too far from the debris. >> philip, obviously finding the debris, if it is the debris from the flight that gives the focus point where to search out in terms of finding the aircraft and try to figure out based on currents and the number of days that have elapsed. it is not an easy matter. as so many days passed by to find the aircraft, just because debris may be found doesn't mean the aircraft is found. >> well, the other aspect of it is what the surface of the ocean is like right now. that is one of the things on scene they will try to get an estimate of. something as simple as the sea
10:07 pm
state, which is how large the waves are, how fast the wind is blowing, that will make it harder to see objects on the surface. we don't know what the visibility is. but there are reports that they gave, were that the conditions were not very good. that makes it a lot more difficult. >> the poor visibility, moderate conditions. >> yes, they haven't said anything about sea state. three to fight foot waves, they will have white caps on the wave. the other thing is, something that large, it almost sounds like it could be too big to be from the aircraft. but a couple of the debris fi d fields from air france were that size, which were strung together, literally from the wiring of some of the aircraft and some of the other materials were holding them together. so in reality it may be quite a few smaller objects which from
10:08 pm
orbit might be a blob. >> i believe someone told me days ago, from air france they didn't find any object bigger than a desk. that shows you the power of the impact of the plane back then. philip in terms of what you heard out of australian authorities, how hopeful a sign is this? for you what are the big red flags here? >> well, i think obviously, they are reasonably optimistic that this might be debris from mh 370. the very fact that the australian prime minister has actually made a statement in the house himself has all been done in the proper manner. they have done the briefing at the right time. but there is always a word of caution. i think that the other thing we need to take into consideration is that as you said, it is 1:00 p.m. in the afternoon in perth, western australia. it is going to take time toward the other aircraft to get out of
10:09 pm
that area. and indeed, many of them will only go out there around 8:00 p.m. this evening. and that could mean that they're trying to do a search mission in hours of darkness, albeit we're talking about the other side of aul australia and this search will go on through the night. we're not necessarily expecting to identify the wreckage, if that is what it is. in the next couple of hours. this could go on tomorrow and the next day, as well. >> no doubt about that. it could be a very long day and night. i'm sorry go ahead. >> yeah, i mean, i think you know one of the things that obviously to the relatives and friends of all the people on board, this is now in another glimmer of hope, that maybe they can find an end to this nightmare that they're going through.
10:10 pm
it is also starting to roll out one of the different scenarios that might have actually caused the loss of this aircraft in the first place. i mean, if this is the wreckage then we know it was not an immediate catastrophic event that resulted in the aircraft crashing into the sea where they lost contact with it. we're talking about an aircraft that has flown a very, very long way from where they last had contact with it. and that would imply that either the crew were completely incapacitated and the aircraft just flew on, or there was serious foul play behind this incident. >> in terms of if it was a case of the crew being incapacitated and the aircraft just flying on does it make sense that it would have ended on this far southern route, in fact, the south of the search area? >> well, it all depends on what the nature of that sudden event was. if we are dealing -- you know, we are still considering the mental health of certain crew members on board.
10:11 pm
we still have to consider the inside threat, the fact that somebody who maybe was not even on the passenger manifest may have taken control of the aircraft. it all depends on what the intent was. but if it was simply the crew being incapacitated, being asphyxiated. that happened where all the passengers and crew members, back in 1983 were as first -- asphyxiated, one person lost control. it is all in the realm of speculation. >> we're getting word that the minister of malaysia is expected to speak. they are sending choppers into the area, the low visibility could hamper the satellite
10:12 pm
imagery. i want to bring in kyung lah in kuala lumpur. and the families who we've seen in the last 12 hours, a desperate rise for information. the bubbling over of anger and frustration of these now going on 13 days for the families. any sort of word, i would assume, would be welcome, although certainly if this is indicative of some sort of skracrash that is certainly the worst kim, what are you hearing in kuala lumpur? >> reporter: we haven't heard anything directly from the families themselves. the malaysian nationals here in kuala lumpur are all in one hotel. and they really have stayed quite yeah from the media. but one thing i did see when i was there, anderson, is that there is a large banner, an extremely large banner. across it, it says pray for your
10:13 pm
safe return. the families want and were hoping that this would indeed be a hijack. it was in the newspapers every single day. the families hoped that somehow miraculously the family members were all alive. it is a roller coaster for them, one moment they're hopeful. at the same time, one uniform that we have been hearing, be it friends or people connected to malaysia airlines they all say they need it to end for this country's interest. it has been a truly tough two weeks here in malaysia across the region as well as in china. and something we should point out. that we did hear from the acting transportation ministry just a short time ago. he briefly spoke to cnn saying you know how big this area is, every lead is hope. and he says he has not seen the image yet, anderson. >> all right, and sarah sidner
10:14 pm
in kuala lumpur, there is a roller coaster, one piece of information gets discounted the next hour or day or couple of minutes. so obviously families will watch this very closely. but also very cautious as we all should be very cautious about the information we've gotten from australian authorities thus far, because they simply do not know what they have seen on satellite intelligence. >> reporter: yeah, that is a really good point. and the prime minister also spoke, about three hours ago he got a call from prime minister tony abbott, telling him these two objects were found by the satellite. at the end of the press conference it said we've gotten this information, however, the australian authorities just do not know if it has anything to do with missing flight hm 370. so they kept that caveat in
10:15 pm
there. and we have been hearing that over and over again. you stressed it many times, this is imagery that wias seen from satellite. they have the size, somewhere around 78 meters, just to give you an idea, the wing span is about 60 meters, it gives you the idea of the size unless they are sort of strung together, floating in the ocean. very difficult to find. we heard it from the australian prime minister, extremely difficult to time. and of course, just as it has been said this is a very difficult roller coaster ride for the families. every time they get word their hopes are dashed because it turns out the information has changed. we have to wait and see. when they find it, we'll know something more. >> right, and sara, 24 meters is the piece of debris that one of the australians said they had. and again, this is satellite
10:16 pm
information that has been analyzed by australian authorities, in particular, by the gio-spacial intelligence authority. again, i want to go back to david suchi, who is a fantastic researcher, and author of "why planes crash." in terms of, we heard the assets, the australians are bringing to bear on this. four aircraft en route. the uss poseidon, the p 3, how difficult will it be, once they have seen the satellite information to actually get a visual on? >> you know, i know everybody has been approaching it cautiously, we haven't found out for sure it is part of the aircraft. i don't think we'll wait as long as we think to sight that.
10:17 pm
the orion's design, that is what it is designed for. it has been doing it since the '60s. if there was a piec that big, i would think that if anyone could find it quickly, that orion could do it. it has been finding it since the '60s. >> essentially, it is a spy craft, with the best technology in the region. >> absolutely, without a doubt it is the best. >> i am fascinated by the size of this piece of debris said to be almost 29 feet, 74 meters. again, i go back to air france flight where it was all small debris. is it possible that it could be so indistinct on a satellite imagery that it could be smaller pieces of debris kind of linked together by cables? >> most likely it is, as i mentioned before if there was a ditching attempt where the
10:18 pm
aircraft had hit the water and depending on how much wave, and form on the top, it can tear that aircraft up in a number of different ways obviously. so i just wouldn't rule it out. i wouldn't rule out there is a piece that big, particularly there is not only wires holding it together. you have cables and structures on this aircraft. you also have fibers that are holding together parts of that structure. >> the question of foul play of course has been a very live one almost from the beginning. i want to go back to the delta force officer, jeff, you and i spoke earlier this evening. obviously, the whole notion of sabotage, terrorism, whatever may be involved is still very much in play. in terms of the assets the u.s. military has brought to bear on this and australian authorities have brought to bear there are significant satellite assets. these aircraft in the region, certainly it seems like enough
10:19 pm
to do the job, it is just a question of how long it may take. and the skriblt given the -- you know, the night fall in some areas. >> well, you know, anderson it is really amazing the cooperation between multiple countries, looking at these two pieces of potential debris. you have the u.s. aircraft, australian aircraft, new zealand aircraft. a point was made that darkness is approaching. it is always, no matter how good your technology, it is always a little more difficult in hours of darkness to maintain you know visibility on certain things. but i was really happy to see that some resources were being sent out there with the whole design to remain on station. you want to be able if you find a piece of debris that is associated with mh 370, you don't want to lose hold of it. the buoys, that is one way to stay on station. not only do they have the cooperate of the countries with
10:20 pm
the military, i was really surprised to hear about the merchant ship, anderson, they said would be on station, so it is still daylight. it will be interested to see if the merchant is equipped with the type of ship that could receive the helicopters. that will allow people to use assets that are capable of aerial refuelling so that they can fly helicopters out to the site. and if need be put people in the water to take a look at even smaller pieces of debris that they might find. >> i want to bring in also david suchi and richard quest, rich spent time focusing on malaysia airlines before this incident for reporting, he actually interviewed and spent time with the co-pilot on this flight. david, before we go to richard, just a quick question about the black box. we all know from past instances the report about the black box. what exactly at this point would it be able to show, to transmit,
10:21 pm
and what would it be actually able to tell investigators? my understanding is the audio from the recording of the black box would only last for some two hours and then it records over. whatever the incident from the moment with the good night mention was given apparently by the co-pilot that would no longer be on the black box, the first two hours, what happened in the cockpit, correct? >> yeah, that is correct, but the last two hours before the impact could be really important to determine whether or not it was foul play or if it was just basically a ghost ship flying with no controls and everyone was incapacitated. that would be very important information. but the flight data is very important. it is a separate box, not included in one box, it is a separate box for the flight data recorder. that will be very valuable information that runs for 25 hours of information and carries about 17,000 different pieces of information for us to analyze
10:22 pm
later. so that one is very important to get. >> but as david pointed out earlier, because of the depth of the ocean floor, it can play tricks trying to locate the black box, sound carries oddly over water and given the topography, that can be difficult to locate it. >> it can be, it is broadcasting a signal, five watts, 347 mgz signal which does transfer well. there is three models of transmitters, locating beacons, one of them has a three kilometer range, second, five to seven, the third one, nine to 15. i don't know which one it had. but if you subtract the numbers,
10:23 pm
you still have two or three miles. that having been said it depends on the topography on top, the bottom of the ocean and also thermal currents can restrict that situation, it is not a science, we don't know how long it will good. i feel confident it will be a good fact. because of the fact that the topography seems to be flat of the it can slow down and divert the signals. >> richard quest, a short time ago describing the break as really only a modest clue. but it really does show you, i don't know if desperation is too strong a word, but the research that has been had over the last 12-plus days given the huge size of this area it does give you a sense, even if this is just a
10:24 pm
modest clue of the importance that the australian authorities are devoting to it. >> i think the times is being mealy mouthed, describing it as "a modest clue." i'm going to read the exact words. this is the best lead we have right now. that is why all the australians, the jets, the planes, i've injury been rejust been reading stories, malaysia is sending ships right now to focus in the search. debris, interesting, maybe, but with a high degree of credibility. they're dropping buoys, they're going to be looking at getting assets from base. they should have some of those assets already there. they will search in the night, the reason, anderson, let's go
10:25 pm
back to what was just said. it is the best lead we have right now. so they're abandoning all the other searches, all the assets are now being poured into this particular area because as the other guests have said, time has never been on anyone's side in this one. but the clock is clicking towards when the transmitters got done transmitting. that is why it is the best lead we have right mou. >> now. >> the fact they're abandoning other areas of search, other sectors in order to focus on finding this debris which they have not had a visual as far as we know yet. >> no, they have not. it is all by satellite, highly credible, they're captured by satellite. they may not be part of the aircraft. but the images, they're the largest objects to be as assessed at 78.7.
10:26 pm
one thing i will say, we've heard a lot about how big things are. the first piece of debris, or the largest piece of debris, the most visible piece of debris, from air france 447 was the tail. that became a main photo of the search when the rescuers got to the water and found the tail floating there. you saw them pulling it onto one of the rescue ships. so there are large pieces available. they have found something. it is the bes÷i they have got. and you might as well go with it rather than all the other fanciful ideas. >> do we have david gallow standing by? he was there for the air france flight. i want to talk to him about the size of the debris because i think it will come into play. you were looking for the words they used to describe it. they said it is indistinct on

objects found out by chinese satellite. that were released, according to malaysian officials that information was correct. it does appear this is a much more steady set of decisions being made by australian authorities to release this initial information, then give a press conference, then send the asset. it would appear this is a very credible lead. i'm here at this hotel in beijing where hundreds of family members are hanging on every bit of news that we report and others report. they're inside a conference room right now anderson, and i can te-l you the atmosphere is very tense and they are hanging on a large thread of hope that they have with this news, it will certainly be very discouraging to them, given the fact the debris is right there in the southern ocean. >> and kyung lah is joining us from kuala lumpur, as she has for days.
10:37 pm
have families there been briefed by malaysian authorities? i'm told she is not available yet. kyung lah, have families in malaysia who have been waiting so desperately have they been briefed by malaysian authorities? >> reporter: the latest information that we are getting is that the families indeed have been briefed by the airlines. but because they don't know exactly what this debris is, because they're waiting for the australians to take a better look at it they're not going to actually move any of the family members to australia yet. there are a large number of malaysian families who are here in this area in kuala lumpur who are all waiting for word. we all understand they're all in one hotel. that is where they have been watching television and reading the news, watching social media, trying to find any bit of information as far as what they have heard from the government here, they have been briefed.
10:38 pm
they do know what australia has given to the malaysian government but are not heading to australia yet, anderson. >> for families there in beijing, are there malaysian airline officials there? where are the families there getting information from? >> well, they're getting information from the media right now, watching the chinese state television. they also have information from malaysian airline authorities in recent days. but right now, in a way they're watching and waiting with just the rest of us and the world to find out if this is debris that is linked to the plane, of course, the consequences anderson for these families are very dire. they have held onto hope for more than a week, days now, certainly they appear to be talking to each other on social media here on chinese social media asking each other to keep calm and right now they are
10:39 pm
keeping calm. but i have to say there are paramedics on scene here, also increased security presence. there is just anguish seen here and in malaysia in recent hours with family members just breaking down into sheer frustration and anguish of this wait. so certainly, they're waiting for any news, but i have to say they must fear that the news at this point is going to be bad. >> it is horrific to think of what the families have been through and will continue to be through for many days to come no matter the result of this. what the debris turns out to be. david mckenzie in beijing, kyung lah in kuala lumpur. and we'll check in with the agencies in perth, we'll take a short break and be right back. >> that area is now approximately four hours flying time, and it enables us to spend approximately two hours or a little more perhaps on station once we get into the search

depth a little more shallow. it is about 3200, as low as 6,000 feet deep in the region. again if it is in the area it would be a little more helpful when it comes to recovery efforts, the reason i put this here, anderson, there are five major oceanic areas here. one is known for being a prominent region for garbage patches, you know there is one in the atlantic ocean, this region also is discovered to have a lot of garbage scattered about. one note worth pointing out here when it comes to the garbage patch in the region, in the north pacific the garbage is confined. a lot of plastics found in this region. the currents very slow to move, it is a large, slow-moving eddy

10:54 pm
the press conference moves so fast, sometimes when you take notes. i found something specifically i wanted to point out. we keep talking about two pieces of possible debris from the plane, two objects. it appears in this press conference that john young mentioned more than two pieces. i think he mentioned a large piece, and then he said a smaller piece. and he said there were other images in the area, which appears he was talking about other images of smaller pieces, let's listen and then we'll talk about it anderson. >> the largest image that i have seen was assessed at 24 meters. and there are a number of other images in the general area. of the biggest one. >> so other images in the general area of the biggest one, which would lead you to believe there are other smaller ones which would give investigators more to look at. and again, the biggest one, 24 meters, 78 feet, eight inches.
10:55 pm
and then the smaller one, there should be a couple of more. you're right to point out they're moving satellites. we may get more information very soon. because they're moving the satellites to get enhanced images of these objects that are in the ocean. but he did point out in the press conference. he said listen, it is going to take a while to get there. first we have to identify and see if it is part of the plane. then we have to bring it back so we can investigate. it will be a while, because of the enhanced satellite images we may know sooner than bringing it back. >> and the australian authorities will alert people, there was a next scheduled press conference that we were waiting for. that was sort of left really or an as-needed basis. obviously, they will wait for any kind of word from the investigators on scene from the planes from any ships that are en route. again, it is 1:55 p.m. in perth.
