investigation, they say their responsibilities are trying to figure out the legal and moral obligations to the passengers, they've so far paid out $5,000 to next of kin, they denied that they had isolated families, they said they are trying to give them privacy and as much support as possible. did not answer a question about any past problems with the pilots, again referred to the ongoing investigation, and republic it rated what malaysia's prime minister said this morning saying the airline is now lost and none of the passengers and crew survived. a quick thought from our panel here, richard? >> what i take away for tonight's press conference is a justification of the mms messages and the core question on why they've made this announcement, the reality we must face. >> david soucie, your thoughts?
10:02 pm
>> i think it's just at this point a matter of accepting where we are and i think it's finally the families getting some kind of closure around it, but it's been a sad day for them. that's where i'd like to leave that tonight. >> les abend? >> as frustrating as it is for the family, i think it's positive we're narrowing this investigation and can find answers hopefully. >> the frustrating part is the search has been called out for now. right now i'm going to turn things over to cnn international's rosemary church. this is cnn breaking news. >> hello, everyone. i'm john vause. >> and i'm rosemary church.
10:03 pm
we continue with the breaking news coverage of the malaysian fly 370. >> more than 300 angry relatives of passengers of flight 370 have stormed out of their hotel rooms. >> and authorities have blocked them from boarding buses. also it's reported that beijing is demanding that malaysia turn over its satellite data. >> heavy rains kept planes grounded on monday. the search is not likely to resume until wednesday, that is weather permitting. this all comes after an announcement that appears to end all hopes of finding survivors while asia's prime minister says the missing plane crashed somewhere in the southern indian ocean. >> well, families of those on
10:04 pm
board the flight have been lashing out at malaysian airlines, as well the malaysian government. >> we go now to kuala lumpur for more. if there wasn't an apology, there was at least an explanation as to why they sent text messages to the family members explaining why the plane was now lost. >> reporter: yeah, john, this is one of the things that came out last night that cnn reported that some family members and loved ones on board flight mh-370 first heard that the prime minister had announced that the flight had ended in the southern indian ocean, that's how he put it, via text message. this is the first time we've heard from malaysian airlines in response to that. this is what the ceo had to say about their sole motivation behind sending that out.
10:05 pm
>> our sole motivation last night was to insure that the incredibly short amount of time available to us, the families heard the tragic news before the world did. wherever humanly possible we did so in person with the families or by telephone, using sms as a last resort of ensuring fully that nearly 1,000 members heard the news from us and not from the media. >> both of ceo and the chairman speaking at this press conference, john and rosemary, they were at pains to explain why they decided to do that. they said of course they have so many people to get to, they
10:06 pm
wanted to make sure those people heard it before the rest of the world, despite the criticism that this perhaps was not the best way to deliver that information. now, also the mood and tone at this press conference really reflects i think the mood and tone of so many of those involved in this story. up know, not just the family and loved ones but the people from malaysia. we've seen very different responses from reporters asking questions, some reflecting the denial in accepting that the flight has indeed crashed, one reporter saying what proof do you have? and the reporter saying what we know from these hand sshakes an our detailed analysis in history, we know the flight landed in the southern indian ocean, these are some of the mother dangerous waters on earth, the most inhospitable on the planet so we can only
10:07 pm
conclude that the plane did indeed crash. and a lot of people actually today calling for the resignation of the ceo and the chairman, which they responded to that that is a private matter and they'll address it, this is not the time for that. but also a very somber tone that the ceo saying my heart breaks. no words to explain their pain, the family members that is, we extend our prayer and sincere condolences to their loved ones. and the ceo saying this is a sad news for those of us at malaysian airlines. >> some family members are going so far as to accused malaysia of murdering their loved ones. some strong words there. what do they think happened here?
10:08 pm
>> you know, there is a strong suspicion that there has been some sort of coverup by malaysian authorities, and this is because of press conferences where information has been given and then retracted, other days where little or no information has been shared and the delay of course in finding out what exactly happened to that flight, where exactly it went. and still, rosemary, today so many unanswered questions. we've also been speaking to the families of course for the last few weeks and so many have told me that if i just knew exactly what happened on board, if i had more details, i'd be able to understand what was going on, i'd be able to explain that not just to myself, they're trying to tell this to themselves but to their other family members. some of the people on board had young children waiting, tiny
10:09 pm
children. one family member i spoke to has two brothers on board and they have a 10-year-old, a 4-year-old and a 1-year-old who keeps asking "when is daddy coming home?" without those answers, it's very difficult for them to accept reality. that sorrow and grief and pain does eventually turn to anger as we've heard from so many psychologists who are concerned about the health of the loved ones. and at the end of the press conference they said it all "we don't know how, we don't know why but we can only pray for those souls on board." >> and apologies, too, for a very long delay there but important to get there. >> that was the latest information coming out of kuala lumpur. we now want the latest
10:10 pm
information coming out of perth, the grounds of the search operation. >> what do we know about what the search operation has achieved before it was grounded due to bad weather conditions? >> rosemary, we know there were two accept brat debris fields, for want of a better description, sighted both by the chinese and the australians. we know neither of those debris fields have been relocated since they were sighted by air. as you say, the search has been suspended today. the australian defense minister david johnson describing conditions as horrendous. even the australian warship that is in that target zone and believed to be reasonably close to where that debris was last spotted has been ordered out to the periphery of that storm
10:11 pm
system. it gives you an idea of just how big it is. the australian defense minister flying to perth today, a lot of expectations we may get a little more information about the sightings by the royal australian air force yesterday. these two objects, one a gray/green color and one an orange color, within the target zone. but we didn't get anything on that. no further details on the search and how close they are at all. in fact, the only sort of point of this came from the vice minister of the armed forces, who is spearheading this search. it was disappointing. listen to what what he had to say about the state of this search. >> we're not searching for a needle in a haystack. we're still trying to define where the haystack is. that's just to put it in context. you're seeing a multi-national effort going on.
10:12 pm
it is difficult for "hms success" in these weather conditions to find small bits of debris washing around the southern indian ocean at the moment. >> haven't even found the haystack yet, rosemary. what he's referring to is there is no positive i.d. on any debris on any wreckage at the moment. until they find that positive i.d. that, is the haystack. and then from there they've got this monumental task still of finding the remains of the wreckage of that plane, that needle inside that haystack. that haystack, by the way, some 5 kilometers deep perhaps. >> and andrew, it is now, what, 10 past 1 in the afternoon in perth on tuesday afternoon. we're assuming this search weather permitting will get under way maybe wednesday, maybe thursday. i'm curious, if that satellite
10:13 pm
information is that having impact on the such area? >> it doesn't narrow it, john, as far as we understand. the was in that the malaysian minister -- prime minister released does tally with the information used for this operation. if you look at the original fields area of interest, if you like and where the two latest objects are discovered, they are slightly to the south of that area. so that is where they're concentrating on at the moment. it hasn't added specifically to pinpointing where the debris might be but certainly what it has done, john, is reinforce the fact that this is the -- this is the place which is -- this is
10:14 pm
the base where this debris, if there's anything to be found, will be found. the air operations continue to ramp up. as you say, when there's good weather, all we know is in the coming days the weather is going to get better. so hopefully this could just be a 24-hour suspension. new asset continue to come into the air force base and more aircraft are coming into perth airport and there are more cl chinese military vessel, defense military vessels. it focusses the search and it increases the number of assets there. as far as adding extra intelligence to pinpointing where that may be, it comes back to that earlier comment, john. we don't know where the haystack is yet. >> that was very telling. andrew is in perth where that search is based and is now on
10:15 pm
hold until maybe tomorrow. >> and talking about the weather, we want to look at the severe weather bearing down on the search area at this hour. >> we go to the weather center for the details on this. it's not just the search is being put on hold. it's a concern what that weather may do to any debris on the surface, will it send it to the bottom? >> we refer to the sea states, going from a 0 to a 9 and it's sitting at a 7. upwards of 13 foot waves, that's the average. in some areas, you can see 20 feet. we have tool here at cnn where we can measure objects across any part of the planet, i laid it taugout from the northern fr to the southern fringe, that's how expansive in front is as you
10:16 pm
begin to push in. lo low clouds have already taken over this area. we're talking about 55 to 60 mile-an-hour winds in the search joan. and fast forward to tonight, tomorrow at this time. notice the wind is breezy. we're talking 10 to 15 miles per hour. this is tomorrow. but notice what happens tomorrow night as we head into thursday morning. the winds pick um to exactly where we started at least on the eastern side of the search zone and the winds look to pick back up again on thursday morning as the search resumes perhaps as early as tomorrow morning. today look at the clouds, showers in place, take you through wednesday afternoon, clouds begin to part, at least in the southern fringe of the search zone and one again on thursday the rain showers come back, the winds come back.
10:17 pm
important to note here, guys, as we head into the autumn, fall months in the southern hemisphere, activity like this is going to be like every single day. >> presumably we can expect on-and-off situation like this with them sending the search parties out and bringing them back in because of this weather and of course just weeks away from the winter months as well. >> yeah. >> good days and bad days as the search continues. we'll have a lot more after the break about the search there. and asia's prime minister said flight 370 ended in the southern indian ocean. >> how one satellite company was able to reach that conclusion. plus outrage, grief, even denial, families of people aboard flight 370 say they are not satisfied with malaysian's officials' response and le wee

air crew of flight 370 was trying to bring the plane to safety. why do you believe that and what evidence is there to prove your theory? >> i felt all along that the air crew were getting the short end of the stick here, that i had a feeling that they were almost being framed by the way that the discoveries were being cast, as though they had intervened. i think there's a very plausible scenario here and i think it's few days when we found out, for example, the acars was turned off after the last communication, not before and the change of course was -- came after the last communication and not before. everything that we know and we don't know enough to be totally sure of this, but everything we know points to the fact that wapd here w what happened here was some sort of emergency that the flight

crew responded in a way that they would, to turn toward asia and to get down as season as possible. there could be a technical fault, which involved either smoke in plane or some kind of decompression, where it was becoming difficult to breathe. at which a height where people could start to breathe safely. at that point it's feasible they were unable to make the rest of the construction and get down to the ground because they were overcome by something at that point. >> a lot of people with that the scenario say about didn't the pilots declare an emergency of some sort? >> that's a very good point. but there is an place i for it.
10:25 pm
one is that part of the say about this is you have to save. >> now, there was panic button that could have been pressed but there seem to be other failures of instrument in the cockpit of this plane, which suggests there could have been some sort of electrical -- just taking things out. and managing that plane, flying it out of the emergency situation would have taken a great deal of concentration and calm. >> collide irving talking to me a little earlier. >> a lot of focus on the pilots. >> george: we have . >> we have to make the point nobody knows which way it went here. at the moment there's not enough facts to come to any conclusion.
