prayers this year a special prayer segment enabling all of the people here to offer prayers and concerns to all of the missing passengers and their families. >> we are not just focusing on buddhists but all of the victims of mh 370 that we care for them. that we also are suffering with them. the support doesn't stop here with this service. it will continue once they offer the families whatever they need to make this painful time a bit easier. cnn perth. >> you are in the cnn newsroom. the search for flight 370 is now in what could be a more promi

promising phase as we enter the 24th day. these objects being called their most promising lead so far. >> we have an area within 500 miles which included four orange colored objects. greater than 2 meters in size each. we can't confirm the origin of these objects. >> bright orange all about equal size some six feet in length. experts say they could be the plane's life rafts or the emergency skies. the search zone does mean greater visibility. one of them turned out to be trash.
2:02 pm
are these four mysterious objects debris from the plane? i want to bring in cnn international correspondent, sara, what are you hearing today about what these planes are going to do. are they going right to these objects? >> yeah, you know it will be light in about an hour in the area there where they will be serving off the waters of perth. their plan is to try to pinpoint these objects. they keep using the word mysterious objects. there are so many pieces of
2:03 pm
trash in the area and it is difficult to figure out whether or not this is trash like some of the objects that were picked up by the chinese vessel. it has been an exhaustive search over very deep water in the indian ocean. very, very difficult to pin point these things. it makes people think that oh they are going to be able to easily find that. it is just too vast and you have currents that move things around. so the priority will be to try and pinpoint and locate and get a hold of whatever these objects is that are in the water.
2:04 pm
the prime minister says, be assured that the government is fully committed to the search operation and we will not stop until that plane is found. sara, into the 4th week now. we know the families are greatly frustrated. are they beginning to worry if the search effort doesn't pick up anything soon that they might dial it down? >> absolutely. and so in the latest, information they made sure to give pointed questions, until the end they do not want the

investigation to stop. hearing from him. it is still a search and rescue mission, that gives hope to the families who do not want to believe that their loved ones are gone forever. we are going 23 days since flight mh 370 was lost. i want to let you hear some of the frustrations from the passengers. we were able to hear from the chinese passenger who had something to say to the government here. >> we want malaysia to apologize for the information that caused confusion and we want the government to apologize for announcing on march 24th that
2:06 pm
the plane had crashed. >> they just want answers and physical proof of where their loved ones went. >> if there was an issue with this plane they want to know where it went. we want to talk about these latest developments with our panel. tom has done extensive research and a former pilot and our miles o'brien. cnn aviation analyst himself and a licensed pilot. there is a lot of debris ip the oceans everywhere. but particularly in this area it is in the shipping lanes and the way those currents work there is a lot of trash there. you are a pilot and you know
2:07 pm
these planes when you hear of orange objects six feet or so or dimensions does that sound like something that could be part of a plane? >> the size actually seems to be too large for a life raft of most of the life rafts, the ones that are attached to the doors and could be deployed from inside the cabin most are yellow in color. as they age they can turn darker and look orange. the crew life vests are orange. i wonder if log like that could have come together. that size doesn't seem like it is part of an aircraft that i'm aware of. > key is going to be getting a ship out there and pick it up and take a closer look. >> we are talking about the

pings from the black boxes. there is a deadline. the battery has a 30 day deadline. it might last longer, or is this the best chance to find these recorders. it is guaranteed to supply. there is no guarantee that it is pinging at all. they are not reliable and they have limited range. if it is pinging. maybe it will go 30, 35, 40 days. it is going to be very cold and that affects battery life as well. it is a bit of a crap shoot as to how long it will last. >> it is only useful once they
2:09 pm
have identified a debris field. they have to be close. >> tom, i want to go to you now. with flight 800, that was a smaller area. here you have a huge area, the only precedent would be air france 447, the difference there was wreckage was found. is there precedent for going into a search like this with so little information? >> well, i think air france does a good example. for flight 800, they had two air national guard pilots and they new where flight 800 was immediately. what i find interesting is the importance of radar data. both of those are critical as we
2:10 pm
saw from the military saying that they used radar data to determine that it turned directions and we have the confirmation to use the doppler effects to determine that our galaxies are going away from us. what they used to determine those on a southern tract. thanks very much. please stay with us. i know we are going to come back to you with more questions. we still know very little about what brought down flight 370. up next we look at the investigation, we look at the role of the pilots and the continue i continuing look at terrorism and why searchers are hoping for a

and they were able to find it. and they were looking in an area 40 square miles. do the math on that. it has to get narrowed down some more. we are basing it on this it is all that the researchers have to go on. it is an educated but it is still a guess. they are doing their best with limited information. mark weiss, you have flown planes for years, looking at a case like this, you have heard a lot of questions out here, they are holding back information and
2:17 pm
not telling us all they know. >> well, you know, i think it would be interesting to note whether or not the radar tracts or the path that the flight apparently took or supposedly took, what is being distribbed to the chinese families is that the same that is being given to us here in the united states or other parts of the world? we still don't really know. the malaysians have been secretive about coming out with the tapes from the air traffic controllers. from the bri from the description of the flights that have been taken.
2:18 pm
we have never had the trimt done in english. it leaves too many questions based on no real references. >> you bring up a good point because of that back and forth. it sparks more questions about what else may be hidden. i want you all to stay there and we'll come back in ten minutes. and coming up, the husband of a flight attendant on that missing plane opens up about his struggles as his kids keep asking where is our mom?

his children? >> i would tell them to continue talking about his feelings. don't keep them bottled up. surely the brief is beyond words. the isolation is what brings the most damage. also talk to the children. let them know what happened and give it to them in a language that they can understand that their mom is missing and may be gone and sit back and let them talk. answer questions as much as you can is a parent but be willing to say i don't know. we don't know. we may know more later but we don't know right now. keep as much routine as possible in that home. all of the things that the kids are used to doing. don't put it on hold. keep them going to school and keep them active.

having found something by now. well, you know, looking back, we have to give the government some slack here. i think we do, they are working on such a low amount of data. there are only six or seven pings in the last five hours of that flight. they are working off of five data points and they didn't have coordina coordinates. they deserve an award for what they did to determine what part of the world this aircraft went. i think we need to cut the authorities some slack. >> it is a fair point everybody is working with so little information with where and why the plane went down. captain weiss, i wonder if i can bring you in, you have been at the controls of exactly the plane that went down in this. in my experience, it is the

folks who know the planes best who have the best and most credibili credible chetheories, what do pilots find most credible about the plane? >> this is such a magnificent airplane. it just doesn't come out of the sky. there are so many back up systems had there been a mechanical failure. there seems to have been enough time that a emergency distress call would have been given off. that tends to lead a number of the people myself included that there was some type of human intervention that contributed to this accident that caused that aircraft to deviate from it's intended flight path. we don't know who was in the cockpit at the time. what i believe is that, that aircraft was purpose pufully tud

off from heading from beijing, we have seen what we believe to be the tracks heading in different directions that we don't know what is true. >> one of the key answers is going to come from when and if the key answers are found. what are the chances that you do find debris how many conclusions can be drawn from floating debris as opposed to the entire plane from that data stream? >> how the debris breaks up is very important and a trained investigators can certainly identify the hallmarks of an explosive device or a fire onboard if you get the right piece. if the plane hit the water at
2:38 pm
very high speed it is apt to be a lot of small pieces. that would be a lucky find. if you found some particular piece that led you to a conclusion. the idea that they might find some wreckage but not get to those black boxes seems like a scenario that we should be prepared for >> but possible. thank you very much. and miles o'brien appreciate your help on these questions. >> coming up, we are going to take a look at new auto pilot technology that lets people on the ground take complete control of an airplane leaving the pilot pow eerless powerless. and we are waiting for john kerry to speak. we will bring you there live when he comments on it.

now to a pain staking search here at home. disease, contamination and death are some of the dangers facing crews digging through several feet of mud following that deadly landslide in washington state last week. the work is simply treacherous. still, there is hope of finding survivors on day eight of the search, says the governor of washington state. cnn's dan steinman is there. dan, what's happening now? how aggressively are those searchers still combing overe d that landscape? it really looks horrific. >> reporter: it is horrific. first of all, jim, if i could talk about the list of those who are missing, you know, crews have been working around the clock to try to figure out who is actually missing and who may have fallen victim to the landslide. those efforts, jim, have allowed them to narrow down the list
2:51 pm
significantly. at one point they said 90 people were missing. now it's 30. that's still a lot of people. rescue crews, they're still out there working through what has been described as toxic sludge. you've got septic tanks. you have oil. you have gas. it's just a mess out there. here's how one official described it. >> so that we don't take the contamination from this site and get other people sick, tetanus, there's nails in boards, there's dysentery. everybody is grossly de-conned. they knock off the big chunks. then they go through a complete washdown. then that material is cleaned and cleaned and cleaned so that none of this goes back. so we don't get crews sick. that's the last thing we want to do. we don't want to get anybody injured out here and we don't want to get them sick. so we prevent that through great de-con. the army is taking care of us. they're doing a great job. >> reporter: the end goal, of course, is to try and find victims. and at times, and this really
2:52 pm
gives you a sense of the grim nature of it all, they're only finding body parts. that tells you, one, that this was an incredible force that came down with the mudslide. and, two, that identifying the bodies, identifying these victims is going to be a very difficult chore for the medical examiner's office. jim? >> that's a point that governor inslee made to us when we spoke to him last week. even when they looked at things like cars. how cars had been torn and crushed. that it really made many of the rescuers think it would be unlikely that someone could have survived the force of that landslide. >> reporter: no question about it. another problem, jim, of course, has been the rain. right now basically holding off. but really over the past 48 hours, it's really been unrelenting. and that's created sort of pools of water in this mud. and it's been described as quick sand to begin with. now you add more water on top of it. it just makes it almost impossible for these crews. one thing that they've been
2:53 pm
doing is putting pumps out there to literally sort of drain the water if they can. it's helping a little bit, but it's still really tough just for crews to walk around that debris field. jim? >> it's a real natural tragedy right at home. thanks very much to dan simon who's right in the middle of it in northern washington state. still ahead, much more coverage of the mystery of malaysia airlines flight 370. we're going to take you live to perth, australia, where teams are about to head out for another day of searching. ful business. so we provide it services you can rely on. with centurylink as your trusted it partner, you'll experience reliable uptime for the network and services you depend on. multi-layered security solutions keep your information safe, and secure. and responsive dedicated support meets your needs, and eases your mind. centurylink. your link to what's next.

at least here. and i apologize that we're running a little late. but we spent a fair amount of time in these talks. as you know, i came to paris today to meet with foreign minister lavrov because president obama and the united states believe firmly that diplomacy has a critical role to play in helping the people of ukraine to achieve their goal of living in dignity and in a stable, peaceful and unified democracy. and we are here because of our firm conviction that diplomatic solutions ought to be the first resort in solving international problems. the u.s. and russia have differences of opinion about the events that led to this crisis. but both of us recognize the importance of finding a
2:56 pm
diplomatic solution. for the ukrainian people. that we agreed on tonight. both sides made suggestions on ways to de-escalate the security and political situation in and around ukraine. we also agreed to work with the ukrainian government and the people to implement the steps that they are taking to assure the following priorities. the rights of national minorities, language rights, demobilization and disarmament of the regular forces and provocateurs and inclusive constitutional reform process and free and fair elections monitored by the international community. we agreed to consider the ideas and the suggestions that we developed tonight and to continue our discussions soon. the united states is consulting with ukraine at every step of
2:57 pm
this process. and we will not accept a path forward where the legitimate govern of ukraine is not at the table. this principle is clear. no decisions about ukraine without ukraine. this afternoon when i spoke with the prime minister, i reiterated the united states' commitment to coordinate closely with ukraine and to sustain our strong support throughout this process. with the full support of the ukrainian people prime minister is moving ahead with the democratic elections and painful but necessary economic reforms. and as we have seen in the past week at the imf and the u.n. as well as in the eu and the g-7, the international community stands firmly with ukraine. we will continue working in lock
2:58 pm
step to provide them with the economic and the political support that they need during their transition. in a frank conversation this evening with foreign minister lavrov, i made clear that the united states still considers the russian actions to be illegal and illegitimate. and russia's actions over the past several weeks have placed it at odds obviously with the rule of law in the international community and we still believe on the wrong side of history. but any real progress in ukraine must include a pullback of the very large russian force that is currently massing along ukraine's borders. and tonight i raised with the foreign minister our strong concern about these forces. we believe that these forces are creating a climate of fear and intimidation in ukraine.
2:59 pm
it certainly does not create the climate that we need for the dialogue and for the messages sent to both the international community as well as the ukrainians themselves about the diplomatic channel. the united states and the international community stand in firm support of ukraine's sovereignty and ukraine's territorial integrity. we will continue to support the people of ukraine's right to choose their own future. and i will say that at least tonight foreign minister lavrov indicated that russia wants to respect the right of ukrainians to make that choice. they obviously in ukraine are traveling a difficult democratic path towards the possibility of prosperity and peace and -- and tonight foreign minister lavrov
3:00 pm
indicated in our conversation that russia wants to support ukraine in its independence and in its ability to be able to make that transition. the ukrainian government has demonstrated remarkable restraint in the face of enormous pressure. it has shown the world the kind of courage and a resilience that every country ought to applaud. and as it continues down this path, the united states of america and our partners will remain firmly by its side. i'd be delighted to take any questions. >> we know the russians have passed a considerable force -- a means of intimidation and perhaps because they have a li
