we'll find the airplane. >> thank you for staying with us. cnn's live coverage of flight 370 and the ft. hood shooting continues live from atlanta. this is cnn breaking news. >> hello and welcome to our viewers in the united states and around the world. >> a gunman opened fire at an american military base. >> we'll have complete coverage of that coming up. and live reports from texas and australia, next on cnn "newsroom." and big question after yet another shooting at the ft. hood military base in texas. >> officials say that ivan lopez
10:01 pm
killed three people before committing suicide. >> and the commander said he served in iraq in 2011, and was being evaluated for post-traumatic stress disorder. >> and that's after army major hasan killed people a few years ago. president obama talked about this. >> the folks there have sacrificed so much for our freedom. many people have been through multiple tours in iraq and afghanistan. when they're at their home base,
10:02 pm
they need to feel safe. >> hasan was convicted last year for the 2009 attack at ft. hood and sentenced to death. he was targeting soldiers about to be sent to afghanistan. he was shot in the back and is paralyzed from the waist down. >> ed lavandera is there. what are you hearing? >> well, it's just after midnight and federal investigators are here at ft. hood and into the community. we know that investigators are at the home of ivan lopez. and we've already learned a
10:03 pm
great deal. officials had been in the process of treating and diagnosing him for ptsd. psychological issues as well as anxiety. and investigators and officials say they still do not have a motive for why he carried out this attack just after 4:00 p.m. in central texas. but they do describe the methodical nature of the attack. >> it is believed that we walked into one of the buildings, opened fire. got into a vehicle, opened fire again, and was engaged by local
10:04 pm
law enforcement. >> reporter: he turned his gun on himself. we were at the apartment complex and spoke to a neighbor as news was breaking out. that ivan lopez's wife was standing around with others, trying to gather the news. that's when she first found out that it had been her husband. she had been worried about it, and then got the news. we're told that she's cooperating with investigators. various sources are telling us
10:05 pm
that. a great deal of work and attention, concern for the victims that are still being treated. we understand that there are 16 people injured. some trying to escape, climbing over glass. but other people shot, sustained wounds in the attack. nine soldiers are in the hospital, three in critical condition. and so far, the death toll, three victims. the fourth victim was the shooter -- the fourth person that died was the shooter himself. but a great deal of attention being paid to the wounded victims. natalie? >> we wish them well. it's surreal that his wife was standing with others. what must have been going on in
10:06 pm
people's minds? what was it like to hear that yet another shooting was under way at the base? >> reporter: i covered that shooting years ago, and also the trial of hasan. it took a great toll on this community. and this is an army installation where tens of thousands of soldiers have come through. this is something that there's been a lot of pain and anguish that this community has dealt with since 9/11 and the wars in iraq and afghanistan. it's chilling and very
10:07 pm
difficult. but this is a community that has dealt with it before. it was eerie, everything was locked down when we pulled up. very quiet. and after that all-clear that was given after the shooting, and everything was brought under order, that everything got back to normal. you saw a line of cars getting off the installation tonight. a chilling scene, leaving many scratching their heads tonight for sure. >> and we'll learn more in the coming days. ed, thank you. john? >> well, so many questions about a motive. for answers on this, i spoke with russell honore, a retired general of the u.s. army.
10:08 pm
everything we've heard from ft. hood indicates this was a troubled soldier dealing with mental health issues. >> that's the indication based on the reports. we'll know more in the hours to come. but as a soldier on the army team when something like this happens. occasionally, it's a crime of passion. but many of these incidents come back to significant mental issues. unfortunately, it does come to that. >> and when a weapon is brought on to that base, how does that happen, especially with what happened in 2009? >> well, there's an open carry law in texas.
10:09 pm
you can't have individual weapons, carrying it around on the base. so, if you were caught carrying a weapon in your car, if someone were to see it, you would have to go before your commanding officer and probably be punished. so, we have strict rules about it. unfortunately, none of the rules prevent people with bad intent from bringing a handgun to ft. hood. -- that's a normal procedure. we'll pass any lessons on. but it's a case of, to get on
10:10 pm
ft. hood, it's a sprawling insulation. with a community of over 90,000, that go in and out every single day. to get off ft. hood, you need to show i dentification. that's what happened -- it's happened twice in four years at ft. hood. >> and this is the biggest military installation in the united states. many of the soldiers have been in iraq and afghanistan. right now, they're under fire at home. how will they be dealing with
10:11 pm
this in the coming hours and days? >> well, it's almost like a kick in the gut. our military posts are our saing tu wary. for our families, and when we come back, it's a place where you're not carrying a weapon 24 hours a day. it's meant to give you a sense of security where you can relax in a family environment. so, it breaks the trust we have with our soldiers and families that we live in a secure environment. and in each case when this
10:12 pm
happens on an army post, it's a individual dealing with behav r behavioral issues. >> thank you, general. and talking about what happens on military bases around the united states. >> and a lot of questions. as the commander said, they'll be assessing what to do. after the break, the latest on the information from malaysia. and a live report on the search from perth, australia. you're watching cnn. stay with us. the check? they will get to the bottom of what happened. >> and chuck hagel spoke from honolulu. >> when this happens, something isn't working. we'll identify it, get the facts and make it work. >> now for the latest details on the situation at ft. hood. the search for flight 370 has shifted once again. >> eliminating areas where nothing has been found. malaysia's top police official says that the mystery may never be solved. all of the passengers have been

cleared, and that there's nothing suspicious about the pilots. but nothing said about the rest of the crew. >> and the search in australia, and the quest for answers continuing. malaysia airlines is taking action. beefing up security. more on that from ka uala lumpu. >> reporter: as the search drags on, the malaysian police inspector general made one thing clear. >> this is an on going investigation. and still waiting for expertise reports from experts overseas and internally. >> reporter: so far, 170 people
10:17 pm
have been interviewed, and cleared all of the passengers on board. now, back to looking at the crew to everyone working on the plane. >> everything. from beginning to the end. >> reporter: it's a painstaking process that so far has revealed very little. >> even the food. who prepared it? we have to look into that. >> reporter: in the meantime, sources confirm that malaysian airlines is increasing their security. no pilot or first officer will be alone in the pilot. as the days drag on, the families are more desperate for
10:18 pm
answers. worried that time is running out as the batteries in the flight recorders come closer to fading. and news conferences reveal fewer details. can you tell us anything that you were able to share with the families? but the police inspector general is talking. and admitted something that officials have not said publicly until now. >> we don't know the reason. you see? we may not even know that. >> reporter: that's the last thing that families want to hear as they wait for answers to their questions. cnn, kuala lumpur. and a lot of people trying to answer the questions.
10:19 pm
for the latest on the search, matthew chance joins us from perth, australia. >> reporter: about eight planes, nine ships engaged from various parts of the international community have started to search again. looking for debris from the missing flight that's not been found. no debris from the flight has been located in the past couple of hours. there was a joint press conference from the malaysian and australian prime ministers. they spoke about the thoughts

10:21 pm
as 26 nations have united behind a common cause. >> in addition to the nine ships and surface vessels searching the seas in the indian ocean, there's also a british nuclear submarine searching as well. with very sensitive underwater detection equipment. looking for the pinger from the black boxes. they will run out just a few days from now. so, it's a race against time to find what may be left of the flight. >> thank you, matthew chance, live from perth. and a powerful aftershock in

10:36 pm
and in the military, a lot of times the process to diagnose it is a lot more deliberate. >> and one thing we should point out here, making the connection, we should be careful making the link between mental illness and the shooting. >> that's a great point. most people with ptsd and depression, they're not going to be violent. a key point. >> and looking at a motive, trying to figure out what happened here, when a shooter takes his own life, no suicide note left behind, how difficult is it to find out what happened with this guy? >> well, it will be interesting for them to look at the treatment notes.
