the world. we begin with encouraging words from australia's prime minister. tony abbot says authorities hunting for malaysian airlines flight 370 are confident about where the flight data recorder is, "within some kilometers." that's been tempered by news from search leader angus houston. says a fifth sound picked up thursday is unlikely to be related to the missing plane. and also mr. houston says there's been no major breakthrough. crews continue to work from the four other possible ping they have detected. today's overall search covers about 4,7,000 square kilometers -- 47,000 square kilometers, about 18,000 square miles. let's get more on tony agot's conference. erin mclaughlin is live in perth. we heard the comment from the prime minister. the word and hope tempered by the head of the search, angus houston. are we looking at mixed

messaging here? >> reporter: we're certainly hearing strong words from the australian prime minister, tony abbot, delivering the speech in shanghai earlier. was also interesting what he didn't say. he admitted he was withholding information about the search ahead of his making with the chinese later today. take a listen. >> we have very much narrowed down the search area, and we are very confident that the signals are from mh 370. i don't want to say more than that because i want to get the most up-to-date briefing between now and my meeting with president xi later today. as a sign of respect to china and its people, particularly the

154 chinese victims and their families, i would like to save any more detail for the briefing later today. >> reporter: australian authority had long said that they will not say for certain that this is in fact from missing malasian flight 370 until they see actual physical wreckage. in terms of today's search, angus houston who's coordinating the effort delivering -- issuing, rather, a statement today in which he said the "ocean shield" will continue scouring the waters, trying to pick up signals. one of the interesting thing that we noticed, according to the website marinetraffic.com which monitors the vessels, giving an update. a couple of hours ago we noticed the "hms echo" has centered in the middle of the search field.

and the "ocean shield" has moved some korms outside of it. -- kilometers outside of it. it's interesting because the statement that houston put out did not contain information about the "hms echo." we know that it is equipped with sensitive audio detection equipment, and it's capable of mapping the sea floor. we've reached out to authorities to claim who the "hms echo" is doing. we're waiting to hear back. that's an interesting development. and we're waiting for answers. >> all right. erin mclaughlin from perth. we appreciate it. thank you very much. as we check our clocks, it is just past 9:00 a.m. in south africa. >> that's where oscar pistorius has just arrived in court for another day of cross-examination. you see the pictures from a moment ago as he makes his way

in to court. you see scene outside the court in pretoria. the assembly of media and general public. this is attracting a huge amount of attention, not only in south africa but around the world. focusing in on what is happening, the olympic track star facing his fifth day on the witness stand on charge that he killed his girlfriend, stereeva steenkamp, last february. prosecutors say the couple had been arguing the night of the shooting. >> that's right. it's been an emotional week of testimony for pistorius. at one point this week he was so seemingly distraught the judge called an end to the prosecution for the day. then he sinkholed gerry nel. here's a look back at the -- scolded gerry nel. here's a look at the testimony.

>> oscar pistorius arrived in that court in pretoria a short time ago. we're going to have much more on the trial coming up. we'll hear from our legal analysts there in pretoria. >> kelly phelps. she's been giving fantastic context this entire time. we'll bring you the cross-examination as soon as it gets underway. if you're watching in the united states, "early start" and "new day" will also have special coverage throughout the morning. first, what goes up must come down. u.s. markets plunged thursday, just a day after making decent gains, as well. >> yeah. indeed. the tech-heavy nasdaq led the losses down more than 3%, and the dow suffered its third worst pointses loss of the year. >> let's show what it looks like. this is the dow's performance the last five days. we've seen a spectacular slide since friday's highs. it's now down, what is that, 2.5% for the year. alison kosik wraps up the rough day on the street.

>> reporter: the sell-off intensified with big names like google, microsoft, and priceline tumbling. analysts said investors wanted to get out of expensive stocks and move to cheaper ones, especially at the start of first quarter earnings season. the dow plunged 266 points to 16,170, its third biggest sell-off of the year. the nasdaq tumbled more than 3%. the s&p 500 slid 2%. the declines came despite a huge drop in weekly jobless claims. the number of people filing for unemployment tumbled by 32,000 last week to 300,000 total. that's a much bigger drop than expected and puts claims near a seven-year low. one notable move, allied financial, shares of the auto lender formerly known as gmac, fell 4% in their first day of public trading. the debut means taxpayers made all of their money back after bailing them out at the start of

2008. coming up, figures on inflation and consumer sentiment along with the first of earnings from jpmorgan chase and wells fargo. i'm allison kosic in new york. asian investors followed wall street's lead hitting the sell button. things have wrapped up in tokyo, shang he, and sydney. they're in the last day of trading in hong kong. the markets all pull back. tokyo's nixon pull -- nikkei pulling back 2.38% points. >> thanks. here in the u.s., the troubled rollout of the obama administration's health care website may have claimed a political casualty. ical kathleen sebelius is stepping down from her post as health and human services after five years on the job. white house officials insist sebelius made the decision to resign and was not forced out. she was criticized after the website's disastrous launch last year. highway is took responsibility for the -- she's took responsibility for the problems before the congressional hearing in october. >> let me say directly to these

♪ your ticket to a better night's sleep ♪ there's been a deadly head-on collision on a northern california highway. officials say a fedex truck crossed over the median and slammed into a tour bus full of high school students. the collision and fire left at least nine people dead, and it injured dozens. authorities are looking into the cause of the accident.

the leaders of the u.s. and germany discussed the ukraine crisis by phone thursday. >> president obama told chancellor merkel the west must be prepare to impose more sanctions on russia if russian actions escalate. >> russian president vladimir putin is warning the e.u. that russia could shut off gas to ukraine unless kiev pays $2 billion in debts. that brought a strong statement from the u.s. state department. >> we condemn russia's efforts to use gas as a form of coercion. ukraine is paying a price clearly not set by mark forces and well above the average price paid by e.u. members. >> nato chief rasmussen says 40,000 russian troops are massed along ukraine's border.

not for training but ready for combat. we have more from the region. >> reporter: we returned to this remote spot near the villages. the first time we were here, we found a military training site with no training going on. we've come back because nato has released a satellite image which it says proves this location is part of russia's military build-up near the ukrainian border. the photo claim to show tank and infantry fighting vehicles. other images are labeled motorized infantry. nato says they were captured by a private satellite on march 27th. two weeks later, we could only see trucks coming and going. some more parked near the perimeter, dozens at the most. a local tells me he saw many

armored vehicles including tank arrived last month. others say the forces carried out exercises and have since left. nato also released images which it says show another site further east outside the town. here they're said to have captured an artillery brigade and more motorized military. again, the pictures are two weeks old. we found this military encampment outside the town. it is difficult it make out the size and numbers of forces. weep don't want to -- we don't want to get closer and upset those manning the predicter. we can make out -- manning the perimeter. we can make out one site. it's the only place russia has admitted withdrawing traps from since the crisis -- troops from since the crisis began. they even allowed media to capture the event. that was march 31st. four days after the nato image was snapped from space.

russia's defense minister announced a battalion of motorized infantry had finished drills and was returning to its permanent base. russia has always insisted the extra forces in this region are only here to conduct exercises, then they'll go home. nato says this series of fuzzy satellite photos back up its claim there are 40,000-plus russian troops ready to roll across the ukrainian border. here on the ground at russia's western frontier, it is impossible to verify either side's claim. the only certainties are the vastness of the countryside, the poor roads connecting remote communities, and the overwhelming belief among the people that war with ukraine is unthinkable. phil black, cnn, southwestern russia. we want to bring you information now on new tensions overshadowing the already fragile israeli/palestinian peace talks. >> the their are reports that israel -- there are reports that israel is imposing economic sanctions against the palestinians. israel reported they will deduct

plane. houston says as far as he knows there's been no major breakthrough. the search continues today, 15 planes and 13 ships are covering about 47,000 square kilometers. >> tourists and residents are evacuating cities and towns along the northeastern coast of cuban cuban. and others -- of australia. and others are preparing for the arrival of a powerful cyclone. the storm has been upgraded to a category 5, the maximum, with wind gust up to 305 kilometers an hour. that's around 190 miles per hour. the cyclone's expected to make landfall tonight local time, north of cannes. forecasters say the torrential rains could cause widespread flooding. >> yeah. a a story we'll keep an eye on. tech news now. google offering a special one-day sale on its internet-connected i wear, but it will not come cheap. it's allowing the public to buy google glass tuesday for $1,500 a pair. pretty steep. until now it's been available by

export stocks which are index heavyweights in japan. we are minutes away from the start of court in the oscar pistorius murder trial. >> he will be back on the witness stand for a fifth day now. >> yeah. pistorius arrived at the pretoria courthouse a short time ago. these are pictures from a little earlier. he's expected to face another grueling day of cross-examination from prosecutor gerry nel. we've seen that over the past two days. it has been relentless. he's been accused of being a liar, accused of being over emotional and pretending to not be able to remember questions he's been asked. has been relentless, the back and forth. we expect much more of the same today. >> we'll bring in our legal analyst, kelly phelps, outside the courthouse in pretoria. we saw yesterday as nel was again aggressive, he was able to

get pistorius to admit that he had no reason to shoot into the dark in the bathroom. what else was accomplished yesterday? >> reporter: that admission from a legal perspective was actually ironically not particularly significant. the reason for that is if we look at the colloquial terminology being used and trace that back to the legal rule that was being suggested, when he said "objectively speaking," he started by saying "objectively speaking you had no reason to shoot," that defense that he's speaking about is what we would call the defense of self-defense or private defense. that has never been the defense that pistorius has been alleging. what he's been alleging is a defense called a mistaken belief in self-defense which is a completely separate defense in south african law. the fact that pistorius conceded and said, yes, that's correct,

objectively speaking i as a matter of fact had no reason to shoot was probably a wise concession to make. otherwise he would risk looking be lidge rent and uncoop roofb becau -- belligerent and uncooperative. >> what do you make of the prosecution's approach? if people were watching yesterday, you saw nel bounce from text messages, messages from reeva to the gun charge, discharging a fire weapon in a restaurant to the allegation that he fired his weapon through the roof of a car and then back to the incident on that fateful night. what do we make of that? >> reporter: well, actually that was a display of gerry nel's secludeness and skill as a -- shrewd not and skill as a prosecutor. he started out with character evidence. it's not the strongest evidence for him legally speaking, but it certainly is the evidence that is most likely to get under pistorius' skin. it also sets the
