new this morning, president obama arrives in malaysia. the first american president to visit in nearly 50 years. it comes 50 dais after flight 370 vanished. vladimir putin, g-7 leaders all agree on tough new sanctions against russia. the question now, what will the u.s. do and is an invasion imminent? a 16-year-old honor student viciously attacked in the hall of a school. what was the motive?

was it over the school's program? a twister hits the tar heel state. warnings of a violent weekend are coming our way. saturday sunshine here. i'm kristi paul. >> i'm victor blackwell. 3:00 out west. first this morning, an historic visit, president obama just arrived in malaysia's capital. >> his visit is seven weeks to the day when flight 370 vanished in air. the u.s. is still fully committed to this search. >> he's warning russia is new targeted sanctions are ready to go as tensions in ukraine ramp up. but, he cautioned earlier, they may not get moscow off its back. >> i think it's important for us not to anticipate that the

targeted sanctions that we are applying now necessarily solve the problem. >> we'll talk more about russia and ukraine in a moment. as the president arrives in malaysia, a warmer message. >> we want to bring in will in kuala lumpur. good morning to you. we know the president is the first u.s. president to visit malaysia in a half century. how is he received this morning? >> definitely a rock star welcome. it's been 48 years since johnson visited malaysia. if you look at the front pages, "welcome mr. president." there's another headline here, a big headline, "ties that bind." ties are a key, key message here, key reason why president obama is here in malaysia sh morning. he's here pushing a trade deal, a partnership he hopes will

bring malaysia in the sboo the fold. there's competition from china trying to get malaysia's loyalty as well. the fact we have a sitting president that shared the stage with the prime minister of malaysia, other key issues that will be discussed in meetings with the prime minister and president obama, counterterrorism. they are trying to grow that and mh-370 as well. we can hope to hear remarks from president obama and pushing forward the agenda that we can learn something from the disappearance of flight 370 to prevent it from happening again. >> will, now 50 days since the jet disappeared, we are learning that the physical search for the plane may shift a bit. what are you learning about that? >> reporter: we know the bluefin 21 is almost finished combing that search area where it felt was the highest probability that

flight 370s data recorders would be located. we haven't found anything. now, once they exhaust that search area, they are going to do what we saw in previous weeks, shift up north and search the next highest probability. this could be a very long haul in the search for 370. >> i have to ask you about the ukraine crisis. that seems to be overshadowing the president's trip. every stop he's made thus for, from what's being reported, he's getting questions from russia. what is he saying? what have you heard? >> yesterday, appearing on stage, he mentioned he was going to meet by phone with several key european allies. if it decides to invade eastern ukraine, sanctioning individuals, prominent individuals and a huge part of

russia's economy. this is something he's dealing with on an hourly basis. he was on the line on air force one on the way over here dealing with that crisis. we can expect to hear more from him on this visit as well. >> thank you for the update, we appreciate it. >> he touched on it for a moment there, the timing of the president's trip. it's coming just as officials there are wrapping up the initial underwater search for flight 370. >> 50 days after the boeing 777 vanished, researchers are unable to locate even a single piece of debris. >> that's what's so baffling. we are expecting the bluefin 21 to complete its scan of the ocean floor. if the robot doesn't find debris, search crews plan to shift their focus slightly north. >> aaron mclaughlin is in perth, australia. what are we learning about the

shift and has the level of optimism changed? >> reporter: hi, victor. i don't think the level of optimism changed. people are very, very determined here to solve this mystery. the bluefin did have to cut short the 13th dive due to a software technical glitch. resetting the software. by morning time here in perth, it was back in the water on the 14th dive having scanned 95% of the narrow area, identified as the best guess as to where the black box may be. officials already discussing what to do next if they, in fact, do rule out that. that search area, more to the north, where they detected the first ping. no mention of introducing a different underwater

submersible. something people have ask iing about a mile deeper and stayed out for weeks on end. it's something malaysian and australian officials are discussing and hammering out a longer term search agreement based on a malaysian proposal to broaden the search area out and introduce more underwater equipment. that agreement is expected within the weeks and perhaps we can expect an announcement then. >> when we look at the fact it's been 50 days and nobody has seen anything floating in the water, have they talked at all about backing off on air searches? >> that's another big question mark hovering over the search operation. angus houston held a press conference. they said it is unlikely they would find debris from the plane as a result of the visual search

and the search was turning to bluefin-21. it's something they would be discussing. since then, no timetable has been given when they are going to wrap up that operation. this morning, eight planes and 11 ships are still out there and still searching. >> erin mclaughlin in perth, australia, thank you very much. this morning, divers have to take a break from recovering victims from the ferry. >> stormy weather suspended operations. we are in jindo with the recovery efforts there. jim, good morning. >> reporter: good morning, victor. we just talked to the divers, both the civilian divers and others. none can say whether or not they started behind me. in the harbor, it's getting dark. there's been a dozen police

boats, they came in when the dive was suspended five hours ago. in the last few minutes, there's movement. they are reshuffling. a couple police boats have gone back out to sea again. it's possible the dive may restart. there are several factors. the main factor is the tides are stronger now. the underwater currents are strong. th that's why the dive was suspended. a lot of fishing boats. they came racing back in a few hours ago. a big storm is headed this way. it's going to put a swell on the sea above the sunken ferry. all these factors are coming into play. of course, for the families waiting, this is a very, very difficult period. in the last 24 hours, we heard divers found 48 young girls all wearing their life vest, crowded into one tiny room aboard the

ferry. a room big enough for about 30 people. now, divers believe maybe another room like that with as many as 50 people crowded into it. right now, it's not clear whether the dive will restart tonight or if it will hold off longer. >> nic, i think that has been one of the most jarring reports is hearing of the girls crammed into one room and they were wearing life jackets knowing they could have been saved. what resources are they making available to family members who hear these kinds of reports? i know what it does to us, i can't imagine what it does to them. >> well, what the government pledged to do in the last couple days is provide more, sort of skills, psychological help for the family, soucounselors, if y

will, to help them. this came out of a big confrontation. they surrounded one of the ministers, a chief of maritime police, the deputy. for hours, the top officials were sitting on the ground, surrounded by angry family members around them, asking them questions, demanding they get more divers to work. the government has got more divers on, it's put civilian divers in the mix as well. they are trying to give more psychological counseling to the families. itis hard on them. a lot are camped out on the harbor. there's a lot of tension there. a lot of christian groups. there's a huge outpouring of support. any number of people down there offering from medical facilities to food to blankets to tents. but, that only goes so far. it doesn't really help the pain

deadly attack on a 16-year-old honor student. listen to this. it was a vicious attack. it happened yesterday at school in millford, a few miles away from newtown. you remember newtown, 26 people were killed at sandy hook elementary school in 2012. >> police say she was slashed several times at the hands of a classmate here. what do we know about what happened? >> last night was the junior prom. she should have been at the prom, instead, we are dealing with this this morning. investigators are looking down whether or not she was slashed and killed because she refused to go to prom with her alleged attacker. >> the high school junior was attacked by a classmate, slashed in the neck, chest and face. it happened in a stairwell of the school. staff members and first responders tried to save her life. she was pronounced dead at a

local hospital. >> vibrant, very, very involved in the high school, an incredible contributor. >> investigators recovered a knife at the scene. the 16-year-old male is being held at a medical facility. police have not determined a motive. the chief cautioned against speculation, including the idea the boy was angry because sanchez refused his invitation to the prom. >> we have heard those stories, that information. whether or not it's rumor or fact, we don't know. it's important no one speculate on the rumors. >> reporter: the victim's cousin read a statement from the family. >> she should be celebrating at the prom this evening with friends and classmates. instead, we are mourning her death and we are trying, as a community to understand this

senseless loss of life. >> reporter: the school's prom scheduled for last night was postponed. ♪ amazing grace how sweet -- >> family and friends held a vigil at a nearby church. hundreds of people gathered at a local beach to release balloons. purple was her favorite color and the color of the dress she would have worn to prom. classmates, heart broken. >> she was very nice. she was gorgeous, too. >> she was amazing, she did everything right. everybody loves her. she was always smiling. >> always smiling. we are looking at her facebook profile page this morning. a wonderful person. her alleged attacker, scheduled to be arraigned in juvenile court on monday. >> when you say the purple balloons, purple the color of the dress she should have worn to the prom, i felt that. what was the relationship between these two? do we know anything about that? >> according to a local

affiliate, they, at one point were in a relationship, boyfriend/girlfriend. we don't know the status of the relationship. looking down the investigation, we don't know if that's why she was stabbed and killed. at that age, you think that's everything, right? it could have led to something, a rejection could have led to something. again, it's speculation. definitely tragic there. her friends dressed up like they are going to prom. it's sad. >> that is something they are investigating, the motive. >> thank you so much. meanwhile, the suspect in another school stabbing earlier this month has been charged with 21 counts of homicide. we are talking about alex. he's accused of stabbing students and an adult. two of the victims are still in the hospital. nobody died in the attack. the teen has been denied bond, though. we have learned that. >> the criminal complaint says

we are watching this weather system march toward the east over the next several days. here is saturday's severe threat. sunday and monday. this encompasses millions of people across the central u.s. to the eastern sea board. the set up is this, an area of low pressure, a big risk in the atmosphere treks across the rocky mountain region. we have the backside of this with fairly cold air, mountain snowfall. ahead of it, temperatures are going to be mild. we'll pick up the return flow from the gulf of mexico and the risk of severe weather is going to escalate. not just for this afternoon, perhaps more so into sunday afternoon. then, into monday. where you see this red shaded area, that's where there's a moderate risk. the storm system that is could erupt here will be the high winds, large hail and potential for tornadoes. that's all out ahead of this weather system.

consultant, mary. she is the former inspector general for the department of transportation. we have an aviation consultant ond former pilot as well. good to have both of you this morning. >> good morning. >> let's start with mary. what do you think the president's impact is on this search on the investigation. does this put more pressure on the malaysian government today 50 get things in gear? >> well, i think it does. it probably also gives them a level of confidence they will have somebody to backstop them when the interview with richard quest with the prime minister, excuse me, the prime minister hinted their resources, he said the search would go on as long as resources allowed. that sent an ominous concern out about running out of money. with the president there, assuring them the united states will help backstop. i think it probably takes a little bit of the edge off and gives them a greater level of

confidence that they can go forward, even if the malaysian resources run thin. >> after hearing the acoustic signals, the pinger, he believed it was from the missing plane. what is your take on the fact nothing, nothing has been found? >> it seems extraordinary there's no floating debris given the assets to search in the area. but, the fact they perceived a beacon, which is almost certainly from one of the two recorders, if not both of them, it would have to be fairly close to there. these are very short range, only 9 kilometers or six miles. i expect they will find something in the short term. whether or not they find the flight recorders is another thing. there is no physical evidence of this aircraft so far.

>> mary, some of the families and sarah whose partner was on the flight, her name stands out. they think they are going to go to b to boeing to get answers. is boeing obligated anymore than the government to release information to the families? >> no, they are not. you know, there's an organization in the united states, a national air disaster alliance and foundation. they go to shareholders meetings with boeing and the airlines. but they are shareholders. the rules of shareholders are interesting. they can allow only shareholders to speak. you don't go to the meetings and protest, you have questions you can ask. it is possible to ask reasonable questions, for example, would it be possible for boeing to have

planes with transponders that cannot be shut off? that's a reasonable question. going and asking about a specific investigation, it won't happen. i would assume they wouldn't get the mic. boeing will not discuss an ongoing investigation, except with the investigators. they are party to the investigation. >> we know the search is shifting north to where the first ping was heard. who do you think is best equipped, country wise, government wise, who is best equipped to handle this from here on out and who do you think will stay committed to doing so? >> i think it has to be australia. >> australia. >> i was going to say, yes, if it pulls within the australian region, which it is at the moment, it is clearly on the australians to lead this. but, you say where the first ping was heard, as i understand,

there were about eight pings. perhaps you meant the last ping was heard? >> mary, would you say this is a shift of focus after, you know, we are expecting it to wrap up soon. if it's done, it hasn't been announced, the bluefin-21 that is. >> it's the next progression. they have exhausted the area around the ping they thought was strongest. we heard various arguments that the ocean can play funny trips on signals and travel vast distances. they are moving to the next logical step. i think they have four distinct areas. no, i think it's the next progression. sadly, it's going to take a lot longer than people hoped or thought. we remember some of the past ones that the one that crashed in january and they found it in august. it could be a long haul.

bloody, firy clashes are erupting in u crane. military forces are trying to get the cities seized. cnns arwa damon is live in ukraine with the latest. good morning to you. what do you know this morning? >> reporter: good morning. well, despite all the proclamations coming from kiev that they are going to launch anti-terror operations. we are not seeing a significant movement by the ukrainian military. if they should decide to go into these various areas, they say they are ready for them. this is the command and control center of the pro-russian revolt. cnn was given rare access behind the barricades of the security services building.

on condition we don't know faces. just as kiev announced the second phase of the so-called anti-terrorism operation. these self-defense units, as they call themselves, are digging in. this is one of the vehicle that is was captureed from the ukrainian military around a week ago. those inside the security services or svu building are confident they can repel any sort of attack. a former military man turned smoxman says they have 2,000 fighters at the ready and plenty of weapons. it's war trophies. the ukrainian army gave them to us, he says. 90% of the cases, it was voluntary. they are communicating and coordinating with pro-russian groups in other cities and towns. he says they have developed several layers of defenses tested on thursday when the

ukrainian military approached the barricades on the outskirts of the city. the barricades are set on fire. it warns the mobile groups the enemy is approaching, he explains. they seemed to work. the ukrainian military withdrew. confidence is growing among pro-russian militants. at a nearby air base, smoke drifts into the sky. a helicopter was fired on and destroyed says it ukrainian defense ministry. others say it was a defense. they looked edgy as they argued with curious locals. this isn't what they are trained to do, nor is it a conflict they want. for now, the groups seem assured that what they have, they will hold. with this conflict, it's something of a stalemate with both sides hardened in their

positions. you can imagine what it's like for the rest of the population unsure of what the future will hold. >> has there been clarity, as it relates to the members of the ose that they are being hold, there's conflicting reports about whether or not they are part of the osec. what have you learned? >> they are part of a military monitoring team mandated. they are not part of the osce team trying to negotiate the surrender of the buildings. they were picked up by the pro-russian protesters very close to where you saw that report that was just broadcast. this is very much a hub for the pro-russian movement. the self-proclaimed mayor came out and said, well, we don't believe these are members of the

osce team, we think they are nato spies. we are going to keep on holding them coming out saying they are going to try to use them as a bargaining chip to get the activists released in kiev. it goes to underscore how chaotic it is here and potentially how lawless it can become. they remain in the custody detained by the prorussian groups. >> arwa damon, thank you. 21 is wrapping up with the search on the ocean floor. so far, nothing, no leads. what's next? we'll walk you through the other technology that could join the hunt for flight 370. today in kuala lumpur. >> reporter: you used the words red carpet welcome. that's what's in the front page of the local paper. he is a superstar in malaysia. they are excited to have the first u.s. president in 48 years visiting. there's going to be a lot of events happening celebrating his visit. that will happen with a state dinner later tonight. the president is at his hotel right now. he'll leave in over an hour to head to the state dinner where he's expected to make remarks. you can expect to hear the president talk about key issues, trade being one of them. counterterrorism being another. mh-370 is another. the president is going to use this opportunity to broadcast to millions of people in malaysia and around the world on cnn to express the condolences of the united states and push forward the agenda of searching for solutions so the world can prevent another 370 from happening again. >> i don't know if it was that

paper you held up, but the president spoke with a paper about the u.s. commitment to searching for the jet. what did it say? >> reporter: he said the united states wanted to continue to invest resources. there are a lot of u.s. assets in place assisting in the search, including the bluefin-21 mapping out the ocean floor to find a trace of the data recorders. the search has been, so far, unsuccessful. they have to expand the search area north. the president is going to say the united states is committed to helping the malaysian government along with the other countries in the coalition. a search for 370. offering the condolences of the united states on behalf of the people here who feel for the malaysians and others in malaysia and the chinese who have been touched by the tragedy. >> is there a sense there, with president obama being there, that his presence is going to

put more pressure on the malaysian government regarding this search? they have been under fire for not being, especially by the families that say cannot be more transparent? >> reporter: absolutely. that complicated the president's visit. when you get to it, the reason we have a sitting president here in malaysia is the trade deal the president is trying to hammer out. he's seen little success. there was a setback in japan where they didn't reach a deal. the president is here to try to convince malaysia to get into the fold as they face competition from china trying to sell a trade deal separate from the united states. you have the president on stage with the prime minister and this government criticized for the way it handled mh-370. here is president obama trying to convince the world the malaysian government is ready

for prime time when there's questions about transparency and other issues. >> quickly, if you can, north korea and kim jong-un making news about a rocket test. also, this american man who tore up his visa and seeking asylum. what do we know about the active play in the president's visit. >> reporter: the climate here in the asian pacific region is unsettled here. you have pyongyang which is president said would only further isolate them. you have that defector, which we are working to get more information about that. supposedly somebody who went to north korea seeking asylum, then the president trying to portray a good image, trying to get the trade deal through and secure an agreement on security issues. the region is certainly, i

wouldn't say in turmoil, but unsettled in certain areas at the moment. will, thank you for bringing the latest from kuala lumpur. we appreciate it. >> the president is in kuala lumpur. it's not a region we talk about much except the last 50 days. now, the search for the black boxes using this bluefin is wrapping up there at the south indian ocean. >> seven weeks. think about it, seven weeks of surface and deep sea scans. nothing, no wreckage has been found. meanwhile, the high-tech sub, the bluefin-21 is expected to complete its 14th mission anytime now. if the robot doesn't find debris, search crews plan to shift the focus slightly north. >> let's learn more about the shift. erin mclaughlin is in perth, australia at the moment.

what are we learning about the next phase of this search, erin? >> reporter: hi, victor, the bluefin-21 searched 90% of the area. the best guess of where the black box may be based on the analysis of the second ping that the locator picked up. they have been searching in a six-mile raidious around the ping. now, with most of that area ruled out, authorities have begun to talk about where they are going to go next. we understand the blue fin-21 is going to search the area adjacent to the u.s. navy, more north of the first wing that was picked up. those are the initial next steps. we understand australia and malaysian authorities are handing out a longer agreement based on the malaysians calling

on more submersibles be brought in. we understand that deal is expected to be reached within a week and we could see more details about the next phase or longer term search operation. >> erin mclaughlin in perth, australia. thank you so much. it's been seven weeks of agony for these families. that's what it comes down to for a lot of people watching this, these families still waiting to get information about what happened. >> we have steve wang with us. his mother was on board the missing jet. stephen, in prep of this, i read about you and your mom. i cannot imagine. of course, our thoughts are with you and your family. i read that early on, you were unable to speak your mother's name, to write your mother's name in relation to this. has that changed? are those feelings still that strong in day 50? >> well, it is real hard. you know, i am afraid to go back

you have to search and find out what happens. it is still not a time to give a result. since, you know, there are no results until now. nothing was found. there is direct evidence. if they are nothing, we will keep on searching. >> i'm sure you know sarah, the partner of another passenger on the flight. she said she wanted to take questions directly to boeing shareholders. you got together and formlated 26 questions you want answered. boeing is the target of one or two of those. do you know anything about a plan to hear from them? >> i'm sorry, the question -- >> do you know anything about whether you will hear from boeing or about what's going to happen at the shareholder meeting coming up? >> yeah. well, you know, as the producer,

boeing should be familiar with the systems on the plane and how it works. when we asked malaysia airlines, they cannot give us an answer. as a producer, we want boeing to give an answer about the communication system, about the satellite phone, about the elt and any other system that could help locate the plane. we want beauing to provide us more information, to find the plane. >> do you believe your mother is still alive? >> well, i have to say, i'm not sure. 90% is a bad result. if there is only 1%, we will keep on with it. >> what does your gut tell you? >> maybe. >> maybe. >> steve, the world is watching.

the possibility she may have been killed because she refused to go to prom with her alleged attacker. police say she was attacked by a classmate. she was slashed in the neck, chest and face. they say the attack happened in a stairwell at her school around 7:00 in the morning. staff members and first responders tried to save her life. she was pronounced dead an hour later at a local hospital. the school community is devastated. >> vibrant, very, very involved in jonathan law high school. an incredible contributor. someone that is loved and respected by peers as well as students. >> they recovered a knife at the scene. the 16-year-old is being held at a local medical facility and charges pending. they haven't determine add motive. the idea the boy was angry because sanchez refused to go to the prom. >> we heard those stories

whether or not it's rumor or fact, we don't know. it's important no one speculate on the rumors. >> reporter: the victim's cousin read a statement from the family. >> she should be celebrating at prom this evening with friends and classmates. instead, we are mourning her death and we are trying, as a community to understand this senseless loss of life. >> reporter: the school's prom, scheduled for last night was postponed. ♪ amazing grace how -- >> reporter: family and friends held a vigil at a nearby church. hundreds of people gathered at a beach to release balloons. purple was her favorite color. classmates heart broken. >> he was very nice. she was gorgeous, too. >> she was amazing, she did everything right. everybody loved her. she was always smiling. >> the community devastated.

a popular young girl. i watched the video before coming here, a youtube clip of her singing a song, a talented song writer and guitar player. a lot of people missing her. >> i can't imagine what it does to those young kids. >> the night of the prom. >> thank you so much. another person charged with a school stabbing, alex is accused of stabbing 20 students and an adult in pennsylvania. although two of the victims are still in the hospital, no one died in the attack. the teen has been denied bond. the criminal complaint says he shouted during the attack, my work is not done, i have more people to kill. authorities, looking through his locker found a document dated three days before the stabbing that says i can't wait to see the priceless and helpless looks of the faces of the students of the one of the best schools in pennsylvania that realize previous lives are going to be taken by the one and only among them that isn't a plebeian.

direction to go. they did also hear pings in that direction. so, definitely they will continue using that asset while they bring other assets into the area to do deeper searching. with regards to the aircraft, i think by now, probably it's not really productive to continue the air search. it's been so long, the currents and the winds will have dispersed any wreckage that was building. it's become waterlogged and sunk. i think they are better advised to put their resources into bringing more vessels and more underwater assets. >> kevin, let me come to you with this. the malaysians say they are going to release a public

report, the initial report on the disappearance, soon. kind of a two parter. what would you want to see in that report and how much of what you want to see is really in it? >> i would like to see hard facts about where the airplane is. there's so little information the report -- that may be one of the reasons they haven't released it. it's hard to have concrete collusions without the facts to base them on. i would love to see the report, but the basis for it is not too strong. >> based on what we know and have been told, do you believe they are searching in the right area? >> i was optimistic. we had two pings, two boxes, two pings at lower frequencies. it's the best information we have. i like further north. i feel the military radar information from both countries show that an airplane went down, back up. that would use gas and shorten the range. i felt if we had to go anywhere, it would be further north.

>> roy, the bluefin-21 is not the only autonomous underwater vehicle. we know there's a remis, o'ryan. do you think the bluefin was the right one to begin with? >> yes, it was the one that was immediately available. it's run by u.s. navy contractors and it's a fly away system. it was able to be on site fairly quickly. there are other assets, the lemis is an auv that can search to the south or east and west a bit. i think this should bring other assets in also. towed systems assigned assets to a certain area and broaden the search and come up with results

in a more quicker fashion. >> gentlemen, sarah bajak is one of the most familiar faces of the families. her partner was on flight 370. she's criticized the malaysian government for not being more transparent. let's listen to something she said earlier this week. >> we are also extending our reach now. there's a subset of questions, including new ones that are more technical that we will bring to boeing. boeing has a shareholders meeting next week. if we don't get information directly from malaysian airlines and the malaysian government, we will go to the source. they are a publicly traded company. they are in more of a few dishary responsibility. >> do you think they have a responsibility to answer the questions and what is the likelihood they will? >> i don't think a shareholders

meeting is the place to do that. i'm sure they are extremely interested in this case and will do what they can. the timing, probably, not the shareholders meeting. >> okay. >> roy, last question to you, as the search expands, do you think it could continue at this level, 26 countries involved with both the investigation and the search. how long can they go on at this pace? >> actually, searching is not so -- searching with auvs is not so labor intensive as one might think. because they launch the auv, then it runs on its own for, you know, 20 hours before they recover it. so, the crews on board are sitting, waiting and not looking at live data. they have to wait until the vehicle returns to be able to

malaysia. the king and queen is expected to make remarks in an hour. he is the first american president to visit nearly half a century. he is there nearly seven weeks to the day since malaysia airlines flight 370 vanished. >> we have will ripley joining us from kuala lumpur. several items on the agenda today. of course, the hunt for the jet and boosting trade ties with malaysia which was the origin original intention and goal when it was postponed the first time. >> reporter: a lot of them will be discussed when obama gives his speech at the dinner. we believe president obama is on the way from the hotel to the national palace where he will attend the state dinner with the prime minister. he will talk about a lot of things. trade, very important. trans-pacific partnership that the president is circling around asia to get as many countries in

the fold as possible. and partnering for counter terrorism. malaysia is key to that to try to keep the world safe from terrorist acts and mh-370. the cloud that hangs over the country and the president's visit. you can expect mr. obama to express his condolences on behalf of the american people and encourage steps to prevent a repeat crisis from another plane disappearing like 370 did. >> will, speaking of flight 370, i wonder how the president's presence there affects a lot of the criticisms that malaysia has not been transparent enough with the vanished flight. is his presence giving pressure to the government, do you think? >> reporter: it certainly complicates the visit when you have president obama on the same stage with the prime minister

whose government has been criticized for lack of transparency in the initial days after this and not responding as effectively as possible when 370 disappeared. the prime minister spoke with richard quest about that topic. he will try to shy away from that aspect and focusing on the somber mood here and condolences and continuing to pledge united states support in the search. 370 does complicate things on this visit, which is really important to the united states, specifically this trade agenda. >> will ripley in kuala lumpur for us just as the president will soon arrive at the state dinner there in the malaysian capital. will, thank you very much. in case you have not heard, one of the big pieces of news coming out of this is president obama does say the u.s. is still committed to the investigation of missing malaysia airline 370. despite the weeks of the search.

officials have been unable to locate a single piece of debris from the boeing 777. the president says we're in it for the long haul. >> unbelievable. the bluefin-21 is scanning the ocean floor. this is the 21st mission for the robot. if the bluefin does not find debris, search crews will shift focus north. >> we have cnn's erin mclaughlin in perth for us this morning. erin, what are you hearing about the search? >> reporter: the bluefin-21 is cutting the trip short due to a software issue. they addressed the issue overnight and this morning, it was on the dive having scanned 95% of that current search area. basically their best guess as to where the plane may be and what do you do when you are ruling out your best guess? you start to look at your next

best guess. officials announcing once the bluefin-21 searched the entire area, they will begin searching an adjacent area closer to where the first ping was detected by the towed pinger locator. one thing people are wondering is why they are still using the bluefin-21. why they have not introduced more powerful submersibles. something they have not addressed yet. considering there are more powerful like the orion which can go deeper and search for weeks on end. we know it is something that authorities are talking about. australian and malaysian officials hammering out a longer-term search agreement calls for a broader search area and calling for a more sophisticated equipment to be used. that agreement expected to be reached within weeks. >> erin mclaughlin for us in

perth, australia as the search for parts of 370 or the black boxes off it shift north and the first search zone wraps up. thank you, erin. >> for more on that, we want to bring in miles o'brien and simon boxall. >> miles, bluefin nearly done scanning the area and so far turned up nothing. is that a surprise or are we maybe not using the right technology? what do you think? >> i think it is a surprise we have the search underway without having found any piece of wreckage. they detected pings in the area is a bit of a stroke of luck. given what we know about under water acoustics and simon can elaborate on this, it is not a precise science. we have to calibrate our expectations.

it took two years to find air france 447 under the surface of the atlantic and they had wreckage to hone in on a location. in this case, we have ping data, we think, which may or may not put us on the right spot. bluefin has worked as hard as it can to go to the one particular area, but the fact is, those pings, if they were in fact the pings we hoped they were to be, might be farther to the north or farther south. that search area will expand and it will take more time than we hoped. >> simon, we talked about the other technologies in the show about the orion. now hearing in erin, the bluefin is taking a break because of the software glitch. are we exhausting this one piece of equipment? >> we are.

we are not sure this is the exact location. the best example is the air france flight that went down in the atlantic. they searched that same area where the plane was finally found using science technology and missed it. it is possible the bluefin has missed it. it is working at its limit. it is working at 4.5 limits. there are better technologies out there. we have our own deep sea rated at 6,000 meters. moving the search area north is sensible. we don't know for certain the pings are without doubt from the aircraft. also, sound can travel in strange waves in the oceans. broadening the search with the bluefin is sensible. it is not simple. it is not a question of simply dialing up an auto sub on an

orion and deploying it quickly. it takes weeks to get this ready. you need specialized teams on-site to run the equipment. it is not a simple task. the equipment may be deployed elsewhere on important tasks. it is a question of trying to schedule this in to be part of the search. >> miles, the malaysians have indicated that this upcoming week they will make their prel m prelimary report and make it public. what typically is in that report that could answer some of the questions that the families are looking for? >> if you apply the u.s. ntsb model to it, it would be a statement of fact. it would include basic information which heretofore we have not seen. air traffic control tapes and not just kuala lumpur side, but what was side to ho chi minh

center. the basic, basic facts that they have ascertained. a factual finding. that kind of information should have been out a long time ago. the families have been demanding this and rightly so. the fact the prime minister is finally saying that we will release this, he sees no reason why not, i think is great news and a step in the right direction. i hope it begins more dialogue, not just with the families, but the families who have been in the dark and they deserve. >> i was watching folks last night that think the political debate will turn to the failure of the military in malaysia to act when they first got word that something was wrong with this flight. do you think that that something, why delay, do you

think that is something that would be revealed in the report or is that something they would hold close to the vest? >> i don't know. i think what it will reveal is they are perhaps not very good at tracking planes. i assume as a passenger or assumed until recently, as a passenger, everyone know where is my plane is at every stage. i find it quite disconcerting that not only can the locator beacons be turned off, but somewhere in the world, there is not air traffic control looking after a particular plane. i guess given that information, the military had no better idea than anyone else as to where the plane was or what happened to it. you have to be cautious. you have to be careful you don't release information that is false or supposition. the malaysians have been criticized and some criticism is justified, but they have been cautious of not either giving

false hope or, i suppose, giving the worst possible scenario to relatives of mh-370. so, you know, we assume the military know what is going on around the world at any one stage, they don't. we have seen too many james bond films. >> miles o'brien and simon boxall, thank you very much. >> simon makes a great point. when we board the planes, there are so many blind assumptions. someone somewhere knows where i am. >> maybe not. still ahead, the tornadoes that touched down across the south. the damaging wind, the hail, look at this. >> what a mess. severe weather is on a treacherous road and it is ready to strike with more, we're told. karen maginnis will walk us through it. >> we are watching a severe

happen in the next 24 hours. two confirmed tornadoes hitting that area. severe thunderstorms with high winds and hail that sliced through neighborhoods. it damaged a lot of homes. there were minor injuries reported as well. >> let's go to meteorologist karen maginnis. she has been monitoring the watches and warnings all morning. who is in the line of fire for the outbreak? >> the biggest cities from sioux falls to wichita and extending down to abilene and austin area. this is a part of a vigorous weather system transitioning to the eastern seaboard. it will take time. this is going to be the first significant tornadic outbreak that we have seen so far this season. it has been very quiet. as we all know, these seasons can get amped up quickly. we are watching the temperatures across the southeast really start to warm up. everyone today in a slight risk. that is not to minimize it, but

just wait and see what happens on sunday and going into monday. we're looking at a moderate risk and that means you have a greater potential to see some high winds, damaging hail, could be large hail, baseball-sized hail in fact and the potential for an outbreak for tornadoes. you need to be near a noaa radio. watches mean there is a potential. a warning means a tornado has been spotted by a spotter or on doppler. on monday, we are in the warm sector of the storm. it is a slight terrific from the river valley to the gulf coast. the moderate risk from western tennessee to louisiana and much of mississippi and arkansas over the next several days. this marks the 23rd anniversary of the outbreak of tornadoes right around central oklahoma.

investigators in connecticut are trying to figure out the motive behind the deadly attack on a 16-year-old honor student. this happened yesterday at a school in milford a few miles from newtown. that is where 26 people were killed at sandy hook elementary in 2012. >> police say maren sanchez was

stabbed several times by a classmate. we want to bring in nick valencia. >> 7:00 in the hallway. this happening with lots of students around. maren sanchez was supposed to be at the junior prom last night. police looking into if she was stabbed because she did not go to the prom. she was slashed in the neck, face and chest. it happened in the stairwell of the school at 7:00 a.m. staff members and first responders tried to save her life, but pronounced dead an hour later at the hospital. the school community is devastated. >> vibrant. very involved at jonathan law high school and contributor. someone who was loved and respected by her peers and students. >> reporter: investigators recovered a knife at the scene. the 16-year-old male is held at a medical facility and murder

charge is pending. police have not determined the motive. the police chief cautioned against speculation including the idea the boy was angry because sanchez refused his invitation to the prom. >> we heard that information. whether or not that is rumor or fact, we don't know. i think it is important that no one here speculate on the rumors. >> maren should be celebrating at her prom with her friends and classmates. instead, we are mourning her death and we are trying as a community to understand the senseless loss of life. >> the school's prom scheduled for last night was postponed. ♪ amazing grace >> family and friends held a vigil at a nearby church and hundreds gathered at a local beach to release balloons. purple was maren's favorite color.

the malaysian government will release the report on the missing plane to the public next week. three now, ukraine security forces move in on pro-russian military forces. at least five rebels have been killed in violent clashes. this is happening as the g-7 lined up additional sanctions for moscow that are ready to go. meantime, concern is mounting for a team of detained international observers taken hostage. they are safe and doing well reported reportedly. number four here. look at the images out of illinois. an explosion levelled an entire house. this was in suburban chicago. when you see these pictures, there are no reports of injuries. several homes in the area were evacuated, they tell us. nearly residents say their windows shook and heard a huge boom. number five here, an

investigation. federal prosecutors are close to announcing charges against michael grimm. the fbi has been investigating grimm's business dealings and campaign for the 2010 election. grimm may be best known as the lawmaker to threaten to throw a reporter off a capitol balcony after illegal campaign donations. the annual meeting of the national rifle association is happening now. members have their sights set on the 2016 presidential race. what they see as a potential threat to the gun rights. >> but they also face a challenge that looms closer. a new gun control campaign bank rolled by former new york mayor michael bloomberg. let's go to alexandra field in new york with more. >> reporter: good morning, christi and victor, when the former mayor announced the gun control policies, you know the gun rights advocates would have

sarah palin. >> in law in georgia is giving owners the right to pack heat. supporters say it gives them added protections. >> here is how it works. starting on july 1st, georgia residents will be able to legally carry guns into some churches, schools and parts of the airport and even into bars. a bar owner, now must opt out if they want guns banned from the premises. >> and unless the police officer witnesses a crime, they cannot go up to any individuals and ask them to show a conceal and carry permit if they see the person has a gun. we want to bring in gun control advocate colin goddard, he is a survivor of the virginia tech shooting and we have yearhave h

henry with us as well. how do you feel about this law going too far? >> we have passed six laws in the last three years. each one restored our rights. we listened to the same rhetoric each time. anything they said has come true. >> what do you mean nothing has coming true? >> in 2008, for example, the restaurant association argued the wait staff -- in fear of the wait staff lives because someone would come out and a steak is not done and someone would shoot them. two guys walking into a restaurant would bump into each other and turn around and draw on each other. there were petitions signed by bus drivers and marta with shields if the law passed. >> marta being the public

transportation here in the atlanta area and georgia. let's play something that georgia governor nathan deal said on the day he sign ed this. >> while we guard against tyranny, people can guard and protect themselves and families from those who don't follow the rules. >> colin, what is wrong with that logic? you can create as many laws as you want and restrict in chicago, but the people who get guns illegally, those laws don't matter. what is wrong with the governor's logic? >> the governor failed to mention and media outlets have failed to cover is it expands the stand your ground law as we know it. people with illegal firearms and carry permits and intoxicated cannot use the stand your ground

law. now they can in georgia. it is the safe carry protection act. i'm not sure giving this is a safe carry provision part of it. it is a part that is a small change that a lot of people missed. it is now a bit too late because the governor signed it into law. it is something we need to talk about. >> jerry, does it expand stand your ground? >> no, it does not. stand your ground is the no duty to retreat. it did not expand that. the only thing it is, if i go into a location that i'm not supposed to be in to protect someone's life. if i'm standing across the street from a campus, if i see my daughter and wife attacked on campus. i can go over and protect them and not be charged with carrying a firearm in the wrong place or run the risk of losing my

license and right to carry because i protected my wife and daughter. it protects felons. felons have always been able to use the stand your ground law. >> jerry, here is what we are hearing from a lot of people. a lot of critics of the law. where was the outcry to take a gun into a church before now? where was -- what is the basis for hoping to pass this law to allow people to take guns in parts of airports and churches and bars? >> first off, in georgia, atlanta airport since 2010, you have been able to carry a firearm in there. the city of atlanta read the law that said they could not arrest you for carrying a firearm in the non-secured area. nothing has changed there. as far as the churches go, the churches are private property. we think every piece of private property should be treated the same. the government should not be involved in churches any way,

shape or form. there are a lot of churches outside of the metro area that are smaller and do not have the money for security to protect themselves. this gives them the opportunity to say i want five or ten people armed and ready to go if we need it. >> colin, i want to ask because this is the part that does not sit well with people. the fact you can take a gun into schools under this law. school districts, as we understand it, can appoint certain employees to carry firearms. you are a victim in the 2007 virginia tech shooting. you know about guns and school very well. would that deter, do you think, someone who walks into a school to know there may be somebody else in that school who is armed? >> i don't think so. there have been instances where there were shootings at schools where there have been armed officers such as columbine. we have to understand the bill signed in law was a lot worse.

it was k-through-12, but this would allow all schools in the state of georgia to carry and force the churches in the state to allow people to carry inside the houses of worship. instead of now, we modified it to get to choose. before they were forced. this bill started out worse. through the grassroots activity of a lot of people in georgia, we made it better at the last minute. >> may i say something? >> go ahead, jerry. >> churches are private property. they like any other property have the right to tell you no. whether it is this law, opt in or opt out. if you come to my place and you have a gun and i don't want you there, i can tell you to leave. same with bars and churches. >> colin goddard and jerry henry, i want to thank you for being with us. i have a feeling we will talk about this for quite some time. >> certainly we will. we have move ahead here on cnn's

40 minutes past the hour right now. this morning, divers have been forced to take a break from the grim mission of recovering more victims from the south korean sunken ferry. >> the weather has suspended the operations now. we have the latest from jindo, south korea. >> reporter: victor, it was initially for four hours.

the divers we talked to a few minutes ago says it is still suspended. they could go back any moment. they are telling us it is more than the storm. the tides and currents under the water. the tides are also strong. that is what makes the diving difficult. the harbor behind me is full of fishing boats. they have come into harbor because of the bad weather. as we stand here talk, it is just beginning to rain. this is the front edge of the storm moving in here. it is expected to rain for the next few days to make the seas chop choppy. this is a hard wait for the families. this is going to be tough for them. they really have been hoping that the divers, they brought in additional civilian divers the last few days, so they can make more progress just in the last 48 hours, they found 48 girls, students, in a single room big

virtue. beyond and above the ordinary call of duty. it is kind of like the congressional medal of honor in that sense. you are moving far beyond what's expected of most people. and that becomes a role model. >> there are probably a lot of our viewers who remember t the papacy of john paul ii. maybe not as much with john paul xxiii. compare the two. >> john paul xxiii from 1968 to 1983. he is the pope who called the second vatican council. he joined the church with the opening of the world. he did not favor the retreat of the world of pius xii.

once the wreckage of flight 370 is found, experts say the flight data recorders are key to solving the mystery. >> could we also learn something from passengers' cell phones? here is ted rowlands. >> reporter: some of the passengers on flight 370 could be at the bottom of the indian

ocean, unsent texts and e-mails and photos to loved ones. could they be retrieved if the plane is found? >> absolutely. matter of finding devices and handling them properly. >> reporter: we decided to see if it is possible by putting the cell phone in saltwater. we tried to send e-mails and texts. i'll take video of the chicago river and stills. we will see if those survive. we took our phone to chicago's shedd aquarium and met the chemist. using water from the ocean floor exhibit, they prepared the pressure chamber for our phone. >> we have the salt compositions right, the temperature very cold, not as cold in the indian ocean, but close. now we have a pressure chamber. >> reporter: the plan is to leave our phone in water for a week and see if the test e-mail and photos can be retrieved.

>> it is 2:30 on april 8th. we will place it into the chamber right now. this is going directly into saltwater that simulates the indian ocean. >> reporter: within seconds, saltwater fills the inside of the phone. eight days later, two of our experts come to the aquarium to remove the phone. >> i can see the salt corrosion on the phone. it is whether or not it made its way all the way inside built up on the electronics and whether or not it corroded the memory chip and data stored. >> reporter: oxygen will quickly increase our corrosion, we will keep it in water. >> we will keep it in water until we get back to the lab and a solution to clean it up. >> reporter: a few hours later at the ford discovery lab. >> it ate the plastic. >> reporter: to retrieve the data, the phone is pulled apart. the board with the memory chip is bathed in an 80 degree ultra

sonic cleaner several times and any salt deposits are chipped away. >> this is the most important part. this is where the data is held and stored. this is actually looking pretty good. >> reporter: the chip is actually removed using heat. >> it was in pretty good shape. the next step, honestly, pop it into an adapter like this. >> reporter: eventually, there it is. the e-mails i tried to send. the text message and the photos and a portion of the video we recorded of the chicago river. and while our experiment with the aquarium tank is not the same as the indian ocean, our experts believe they could also retrieve data from cell phones on flight 370. >> the chips are fairly well protected. we were able to get the data off. i think it will be possible. >> reporter: ted rowlands, cnn, chicago. >> that is fascinating. it is amazing you can do that. we always appreciate you
