city. we're following this big story all throughout the hour but first, we're going to start "new day" with this controversy in the nba that's caught the attention of not only athletes and fans and people here across the country but president obama. he's in the middle of his week-long trip to asia. today he spoke out on the firestorm surrounding donald sterling, the owner of one of the league's south teams, the l.a. clippers. sterling is dominating headlines this morning, he's accused of making racist remarks. >> this conversation between sterling and his girlfriend all recorded and apparently sparked by a photo of that girlfriend with magic johnson, that she posted on instagram. >> i saw one i admire. i admire magic johnson. >> okay, good. >> i'm sorry. he's made a lot of changes for his community, for the world, for the people, for the minorities. he's helped a lot of people. >> why you forcing this down my throat? i'm finished talking to you.

3:03 am
>> now, magic johnson, the subject of at least part of sterling's rant airing his thoughts on twitter calling the remarks "a black eye for the nba" and adding "my wife and i will never go to a clippers game again as long as donald sterling is the owner." >> we're also hearing from nba hall of famer and tnt sports host charles barclkley. >> he has to suspend him right now. >> silver denounced the remarks and called for patience as the league investigates. >> the audio recording posted by tmz is truly offensive and disturbing. and we intend to get to the bottom of it, as quickly as possible. all members of the nba family should be afforded due process

and a fair opportunity to present their side of any controversy. which is why i'm not yet prepared to discuss any potential sanctions against donald sterling. >> so let's dig a little deeper into this with cnn's andy scholes and thank you both for being here. we appreciate it. >> andy, the commissioner talked about the process but there are a number of things that the league can do. let's talk about those. >> the most likely thing to happen is a fine and a suspension. an nba owner has never been suspended before so that would be a big step and in itself. fine, donald sterling is worth about $1.9 billion is to will be irrelevant to fine the man. he's 80 years old, getting up there in age. people are saying can they take the nba team away from them?
3:05 am
the nba is confidential, there's no bylaws that say a team can be taken away from an opener just based on reprehensible language or actions such as we're hearing from sterling if that is him on the tape. so that's unlikely to happen. owners will be reluctant to set a precedent if they have actions or language such as sterling that their team can be taken away from them. the most likely is a fine and investigation as adam silver said last night during his press conference. he has broad powers in place to hand down a raping of sanctions. >> jason, let me ask you, first of all, we need to be clear, don sterling's team has not denied this nor have they confirmed it. >> true. >> we need to be clear about that. when it comes to don sterling, that's him. what about the players? there was i think the former clipper guard ron harper in a phone interview said that sterling took care of me when i played there but if i had known

3:16 am
before but he answered it in a little bit more depth. it was why doesn't the u.s. just act alone to sanction russia right now in this crisis in ukraine, and the president agreed that yes, in his words russia has not lifted a finger to deescalate the situation but he said that the u.s. would be in a much stronger position to act with europe instead of alone and he gave an example saying in the instance of arms dealing, if the u.s. cut off all of those deals, what good would it be really if europe then backfills all of those orders? here's part of his statement from today. >> the notion that for us to go forward with sectorial sanctions on our own without the europeans would be the most effective deterrent to mr. putin i think it is factually wrong. the issue is, can the ukrainians make their own decisions about
3:17 am
how they govern themselves and who they have international relations with. >> another really tough question for president obama here was the issue of human rights because while he's meeting with the prime minister, there are these opposition leaders who have been charged with crimes here, widely considered to be trumped up charges, sort of a method to get them out of the political play here and the president was asked why do you not meet with those people? do you not have a strong commitment to human rights? how really could you not meet with them or address that directly and president obama defended himself saying just because i'm not meeting with them doesn't mean i'm not committed. his national security adviser susan rice did meet with opposition leaders and the president insisted he did encourage the malaysian prime minister to address those issues, and the prime minister of malaysia agreed that he had done so. but it's hard on this trip to

3:31 am
was beloved by italians and well respected in the catholic church and you have what you see behind me, a huge crowd upwards of 1 million people who slept overnight out on the street with their sleeping bags to wait for the moment that we saw this morning, when pope francis officially declared john xxiii and john paul ii saints of the catholic church. >> beyond the canonization of the two popes, there's this moment where the two living popes are participating in this ceremony at the same time. how did pope ben digt, pope emeritus benedict look, his health, how is he? >> well, victor, he's 87 years old. he resigned last year for reasons of frailty, he said for reasons of not being able to keep up with the demands of the job, and so he looks pretty much like you might expect. he was never a very robust man
3:32 am
to begin with in the sense that john paul ii might have been in his early years but intellectually and in his spirit and in his character, he's very much still quite vital, and i think one of the most important moments of this morning was when pope francis went over and embraced pope emeritus benedict because in the first place, pope francis wouldn't be here if it weren't for pope benedict's very radical act of resigning and also pope benedict was the person who was closest to john paul ii during the 26 years of his pontificate. he and john paul ii were the last two popes to participated in the second vatican council, also john xxiii. certainly for pope benedict this occasion is an historical one having known both of them and worked with both of these new saint popes. >> vatican correspondent delia gallagher, thank you so much.

xxiii wasn't going to snap his fingers and make women priests. john paul ii was as much a critic of capitalism as he was of communism. no one would call benedict xvi a liberal, yet he called for the redistribution of wealth and said health care is a fundamental human right. i think what's happening here is a call for unity and yes, there are people who identify john xxiii on the progressive side and john paul ii on the conservative side. i'll agree with you so far. i think what francis is calling for is a big noah's arc church where we have to love each other even if we don't like each other all the time but looking for a church of both ends. i think what's really going on here is that pope francis is canonizing the second vatican council, that great meeting of the church that john xxiii started and john paul ii implemented with paul vi in the middle. we're in the 50th anniversary of
3:35 am
the council, 1952 to 1965 is when the council sat. there are many ways of living vatic vatican, many ways of being catholic, all of them authentic and to say one way of interpreting the council or one way of being catholic is the right way and the others aren't i think that's what's going on. he's going after both ands catholicism, not either/osh catholicism. >> one thing that is also significant here, now saint john paul ii's canonization is the swiftest beautification in history, if i believe. normally you have to wait five years and this was expedited i think if i remember correctly, made possible by pope benedict. but you wrote i know, christopher, that the church should wait 50 or 100 years for the process of making a pope a saint. why do you believe that? >> well, i think that let's say what is being declared when
3:36 am
someone is made a saint, with he say this person lived a life of extraordinarily christian heroic virtue but not that this person is without sin. we are all with sin. we believe, i'm a practicing catholic myself, and i'm trying to get it right and i'm going to fall down and i'm not going to get it right. so all saints are by definition sinners because they are human but they recognize something greater. however, we have to say that being a pope is a pretty unique job description, and though lots of people are saints who are craftsmen, who are carpenters, who are kings, who are queens, who are mothers and fathers in the pews, being pope is pretty unique so when the catholic church says we're going to canonize thisser. the catholic church is not saying we're going to canonize every single thing this person did. that's okay when it comes to people in a local area, but when it comes to the complex role of a papacy, then people are going
3:37 am
to start to ask questions as to well, which parts of the papacy are you canonizing? the answer of course is going to be we're not canonizing a papacy. we're canonizing not even john paul ii but carol wojtla. i have to move from saying popes should never be canonized to saying this is so unique, a papacy is so unique that maybe we need a longer period of time to wait and let things settle. i was watching the funeral of john paul ii as we all were and someone said as they held up the signs "santo subito" canonize right away, but i also thought immediately that kind of enthusiasm is precisely why we have the wisdom of a five-year waiting period and so some people say why are we rushing on john paul ii and what about mother teresa. >> good point.

3:50 am
so i have an acronym called c.a.r. the first thing we need to do, our instinct is to panic but we have to stay calm. c is for calm. we have to be ready good listeners. we have to ask what the child needs and they need to hear i believe you and here to protect you and r is probably the most difficult and that's to respond with courage. we know that 93% of the time the child knows, loves and trust this is person, so you know, love and trust this person. so that is the most difficult thing is to call law enforcement, to not do the investigation, to let the experts do the forensic interviews so that that child's testimony could be protected and they could get justice. >> we know that sex predators or pedophiles are an entirely different breed of criminal, right? >> they are our friends, they're our pastors, they're our
3:51 am
doctors, they're our lawyers. they are the people that we know, so when you say the word predator we're looking for a monster amongst us. their behavior is obviously heinous and spreader toial. >> they'll work for years to ingrai ingratiate themselves in our lives. >> they tend to havena, sick behavior, very power control are some of their traits and really what we need to recognize is how that child interacts with that person. is there someone in the child's life they're edgy around, maybe aren't comfortable around that they don't want to spend time alone with. >> and give the child a chance to say i'm not comfortable here and that's okay, don't force them to be around them. why are you asking people to wear the color white on wednesday specifically this wednesday, april 30th? >> april 30th is a national movement, it's part of the voice
3:52 am
movement called white out child abuse day. it is time we stand for the innocence of our children. one in four girls and one in six boys are sexually abused before their 18th birthday. it's time we stand in solidarity for the innocence of our children but also for the wounding of 4 million reported survivors in the u.s. >> which you are one? >> which i am one. it is a movement for to us come together and really for this cause stand up and do something and let that survivor know we care about your pain and -- >> we're behind you. >> maybe giving it a voice in this conversation we could find solutions because we can't continue to be oblivious to this. it's not even an epidemic anymore, it's pandemic. >> absolutely. angela, thank you so much for everything you're doing. you are encouraged this wednesday, april 30th to wear white to show your support and stand in solidarity with child sex abuse victims. so much story with bleeian and her family online, they opened

lot of families say they're done waiting and they're turning to boeing for answers. cnn's alexander field has more. [ speaking in foreign language ] >> reporter: more desperate, more frustrated, the family members of the passengers aboard malaysia airlines flight 370 turned their attention toward boeing. >> and if we're not getting information directly from malaysian airlines and from the malaysian government, we might as well try to go directly to the source. >> reporter: the manufacturer of the missing 777 ush identify a statement that says "in accordance with international protocols boeing is serving as a technical adviser to the national transportation safety board in support of malaysian authorities." families have technical questions they want boeing to answer. >> they would have all the data. they would have the tape recordings, the inmar satellite images. >> i advocated that inmarsat and perhaps together with boeing as a participant release some of this information, some of this

technical data information so that the families can at least get a handle on how they came about to calculate the area on, this coalesced area where everyone is looking now. >> reporter: boeing express expressedsive thee and an appeal from the families won't likely change that. >> they are under no obligation to disclose any of that information. >> boeing will say that they are prohibited from talking to the families under annex 13 of the international civil organization but that only applies to information gathered in the course of an investigation. >> reporter: a lawsuit against boeing could force the manufacturer to turn over information about its aircraft. with the plane still missing some aviation attorneys say the families don't have a case, at least against the boeing company. >> you're not going to be able to bring a claim against boeing without the wreckage or the black boxes. >> reporter: alexandra field, cnn, new york.

-- captions by vitac -- www.vitac.com oh, you made it to sunday. doesn't that feel good? i'm christi paul. >> i'm victor blackwell. this is "new day" sunday. >> a day of celebration for catholics around the world. lot of people are watching it. >> a beautiful ceremony. >> two new saints are canonized. these are live pictures from vatican city, pope francis ride among the crowds. you can hear how excited people are, the faithful gathering to witness pope john 23rd and pope john paul ii becoming saints. >> pope francis always appears to enjoy the ride through the crowd, reaching out, accepting things they give him as he passes. we're following the big story during this hour. first we want to start with an nba controversy that's really caught the attention not only of the athletes and the fans of the league but also president obama, and consider this.
4:00 am
the president is in the middle of his asia trip in kuala lumpur and all that's happening there. he spoke out today on the firestorm surrounding donald sterling, all the way in malaysia. donald sterling is the owner of one of the league's top teams, the l.a. clippers. sterling is dominating headlines this morning, he's accused of making racist remarks. >> this conversation between sterling and his girlfriend all caught on tape and apparently sparked by a photo of that girlfriend with magic johnson that she posted on instagram. please let me forewarn you here, it's morning and i know you've got kids in the room perhaps, some of the language here is certainly offensive. we tried to clean it up as best we can.
4:01 am
>> that recording, made public by tmz is sparking not only reaction from the sports world but as we told you at the top of the show from the president. he had this to say during the malaysia stop of his asia tour. >> when ignorant folks want to advertise their ignorance, you don't really have to do anything.
4:02 am
you just let them talk, and that's what happened here. >> magic johnson the subject of part of sterling's rant anyway is airing his thoughts on twitter calling the remarks "a black eye for the nba" and adding "my wife and i will never go to a clippers game against as long as donald sterling is the owner." >> we're also hearing from nba hall of famer and tnt sports host charles barkley who says the commissioner and adam silver must take swift action. >> this is the first test of adam silver. he's got to suspend him right now. >> joining us now from oakland, california, is cnn's dan simon. >> dan, good to see you this morning. charles barkley, even some current nba players i know saying sterling needs to go. what is the nba saying this morning? >> reporter: good morning, guys. boy, has this story blown up quickly. first, let me tell you where i am. we're in front of oracle arena in oakland, where game four is going to be played today between
4:03 am
the clipper answer the golden state warriors and i tell you what. some have called for the clippers to even boycott this game but the head coach of the warriors, of the clippers rather says that is not going to happen, that the idea was discussed in the locker room but it was dismissed, that they're going to play their hearts out today. but reaction is coming in fast and furiously, as this story really has spread like wildfire across the internet. the nba commission ear dam silver who just came into that post a few months ago said that the league is going to do a couple things. first it wants to authenticate the tape and number two he wants to see the context in which the offensive comments were made. take a look. >> it's unacceptable, and you know, as a commissioner of our league, you have to make a stand and you have to be aggressive with it.
4:04 am
>> silver cautioned that sterling must be afforded due process and that the investigation is going to move very, very quickly, and that's really going to need to happen, christi and victor because you're looking at a major uproar here among nba players. >> we heard from lebron james, he said there's no room for donald sterling in the league. we also heard yesterday from doc rivers who is the coach of the l.a. clippers and he walked a bit of a line, dan, in i guess condemning the comments but also trying to keep the focus on the team and the game. >> absolutely. you know, that's really going to be the key here, that they want sort of the protest to be in the play. you talked about lebron james because of his stature in the nba his words carry a lot of weight. let's listen to what lebron had
4:05 am
to say. >> it's sunacceptable and as a commissioner of our league, they have to make a stand and have to be very aggressive with it. >> reporter: well, chris paul, chris paul, who is the president of the nba players association said the following, we have an on screen quote for you, "on behalf of the national basketball players association, this is a very serious issue, which we will address aggressively. we have asked mayor kevin johnson to expand his responsibilities with the nvpa to determine our response and next steps. as players we ohe it to our teams and our fans to keep our focus on our game, the playoffs, and a drive to the finals." we're also hearing, guys, from the president of the clippers, andy rocher who said, didn't know if the tape was legitimate but said the woman on the tape who he believes gave it to tmz is a defendant in a lawsuit brought by the sterling family
4:06 am
alleging that she embezzled more than $1.8 million, who told mr. sterling that she would get even. he doesn't name the woman but of course we're talking about the woman at the center of all this, vee stibiano. as we like to say in this business this story has some legs and it will be pretty interesting to see what happens at the game today if there's going to be some type of symbolic protest at the beginning of the game between the players, will they come together, will they wear arm bands? it's going to be really interesting to see, guys. >> dan simon, thank you very much. he brings up a good point, you can't ignore this when you go to the game. jason johnson joining us now. what do you think they do out of the gate? >> the players will concentrate on the game but the happy person is mark jackson, the coach of the golden state warriors. oh my gosh he's telling his players this isn't just for you but for everybody else in the league who is mad, you're going to put the clippers down today.
4:07 am
there will be symbolism on the part of the golden state warriors, the clippers are going to try and make it through the game. >> let's talk about some of the comments. there are some who find it difficult to understand how don sterling can both say that he admires magic johnson but also have these comments about having him at the games, being with him in public, and something as simple as walking with black people. >> right, or the fact that he's having sex with a woman who is half black. this is how racism works. it never made any sense. you can hate black but still want to have sex with them. you can hate people in vietnam and still want to have -- this is the complexity and the sicks than is modern racism. it's never changed. it probably will not evolve and as he said, and i think this is really important is he talks about in this tape, he said it's like talking to the enemy. people think you're a nice white girl. you shouldn't be doing like this. this runs deeper than his own bigotry. he's speaking for a generation. >> when we talk about sterling
4:08 am
you think okay, he's an owner. he is the purse strings of this organization. >> yes. >> how do you punish the purse strings without punishing everybody else? it what are the options here? >> the options are very clear. this is a club. you don't have a right to own an nba team. it's as much a privilege, there's only 32 in the world, it's as much a privilege to own than to play. if the commissioner takes real authority here he can say you've damaged the brand, damaged the league and consequently i think we have to look at your rights to own this team, just like any player who would embarrass the league. the league should step in and say maybe you're not responsible enough to have this anymore. >> what is the likelihood considering the other enoers wouldn't enjoy this precedent? >> i don't think they'd enjoy it but there are ways you can remove someone. we don't want you in day to day operations, they can say you can't come to games anymore under any circumstances. you're getting sued by so many different people you have already damaged the league
4:09 am
enough. we just want to offer you a buy-out. i think that's a possibility. the number of lawsuits likely coming out of this from staff people and members waiting to be exposed are going to be huge. adam silver does not want this dragging on to june in the finals. >> what about the tape that surfaced and the background of this relationship with this woman. he's still married and was it really payback from her? >> i think it might be. this is what i think is key about this. tmz is a lot of things but don't get sued a lot. they would not release this tape if they hadn't authenticated it. i think they know it's legitimate. i listened to the tape several times. i have a feeling there's probably more to it. i think it's clear that it's him. i think they know it's him and i think that right now the league is just trying to figure out what they to do legally. i think we can probably trust this is donald sterling. >> let's talk about the side bar issue, the naacp, l.a. branch
4:10 am
honoring him with a lifetime achievement award. >> a little ironic at the moment. >> and the timing could not be worse for the naacp, no the better for don sterling. >> right. i think this is what happens when you give a bunch of tickets to poor kids in the inner city. it sounds terrible but pretty much what he's done. he's a rich fguy and a philanthropist. you can hire black people and still hate them. you can hire women and still hate them. this is paula deen, so many other examples where people have dual identities. i'm not surprised the naacp was about to give him an award. they'd be dumb to do so now. we'll see if they listen to the rest of the cries from the country. >> i can't imagine how they could go through with it. >> if they do you know we'll be talking about it here. jason johnson, thank you. still to come on "new day," the situation in ukraine. i mean, this is getting worse by the day. even after that geneva agreement didn't seem like anybody held up
4:11 am

russia has not lifted a finger to help. in fact, there's strong evidence that they have encouraging the kinds of activities that have been taking place. >> that's president obama, his comments from malaysia overnight. the president said the world is united against russia in its actions there in ukraine. the tension between kiev and pro-russian separatists in eastern ukraine is heating up. russian state news is claiming kiev mobilized 15,000 troops in the suburbs of salvyansk to,
4:15 am
"wipe out the city and its residents." >> frightening. on russia's side there are 40,000 troops conducting military exercises. group of european observers are in the hands of pro-russian gunmen. we want to bring in retired u.s. army general james "spider" marks. thank you for being with us. >> my pleasure. >> in this situation, do you see any way to avoid some sort of military confrontation? >> well, christi, the military confrontation is already taking place. kiev has an obligation to maintain peace, order, control, in all of its sovereign territory and slaviansk and dou donetsk. the president is correct. i challenge him, putin is raising a finger and raising a finger to instigate the violence and the chaos that you see in
4:16 am
east ukraine. clearly putin and the government in kiev, moscow and kiev should be able to talk, because it appears right now that they have a coalescing of the same objective, both want some form of stability, putin doesn't want to see this thing spin out of control. his concern is for russian, ethnic russians in east ukraine and the kiev government certainly wants to maintain order in its country and within its borders, so you'd think there might be some degree of an agreement. clearly that's not the case right now. >> general, you said that this already, military confrontation. my question pulls the string of with whom and which country? if we take into context the buzzing of u.s. ships, the flying russian jets flying into u.s. air space. is putin looking specifically for a military confrontation with the u.s., not just ukraine? >> well, the russians didn't do anything about u.s. air space.
4:17 am
what they did is overflied a naval. they have penetrated ukrainian air space, victor. so it is very provocative, absolutely. these are clear indications of tensionsing. ratcheted up, but, russia has annexed crimea, which is a part of ukraine so we have to take that discussion of trying to find our way around the edges on this thing and tighten it up and say look, the russians have invaded ukraine, annexed crimea. there is instigation that's taking place in east ukraine, and clearly putin doesn't gain if this thing completely spins out of contro and he has the responsibility to try to clean up the mess in east ukraine. i would anticipate that the forces that are north of ukraine, the russian forces that are north of ukraine right now really is the strategic provocative action that's taking place right now. clearly putin has the authority to exercise his own forces in his own country, but the message that he's sending ukraine and the rest of the world is, look, i mean business here, but i tell
4:18 am
you, russian history tells you that they like instability on their borders, as long as they can control that instability and know what the outcome is. makes it more difficult to threaten russia and moscow. in this case, putin's concerned that he can't control what's taking place in ukraine so he's keeping the forces there to ensure that if it spins out of control to, in his view, can he react. >> general spider marks, thank you so much. >> thank you, folks. >> thank you. so new this morning, listen to this, after all of the criticisms of the malaysian government over the handling of flight 370, president obama is defending them. >> earlier today at a joint news conference, mr. obama said he believes the malaysian government has been forthcoming with information to the u.s. he also vowed to provide more assistance and support to the search. >> meanwhile the high-tech underwater robot the bluefin 21 scouring the ocean floor. it's the robot's 15th mission.

here and i'm accessible to you kind of thing, and let's get more on what's happening there with vatican correspondent delia gallagher because she's live just outside of vatican city. >> what was the scene as the pope rode through the crowds, delia? >> reporter: what a thrill, victor and christi. the crowds here, you have to understand have been here since yesterday, sleeping in sleeping bags out under the stars on the hard cobblestones of st. peter's and i think everybody was really hoping that pope francis would be able to come all the way down and let everybody get a close glimpse of him which they do when he's in the popemobile. he did do that. i think as a sign of recognition these people that had come from so far, flights from all nations of the word, the largest contingency from poland, last night when they were all here singing songs, a group of marathoners from poland arrived and they had run from poland to rome. so that will tell you the extent of the devotion of these people

both for the two pope saints but also for pope francis. so it was a really special moment when he was able to come down and really greet the crowds. he got down from the popemobile, waved to those people who were on the bridges he couldn't access. nice ending to what has been a very exciting and unique moment. >> with all the flags flying and you can hear the people buzzing behind you get a good sense of it. what else is on the agenda for pope francis today? >> reporter: my goodness, today he's had a very busy morning, had to meet all of the dignitaries that came to celebrate with him and obviously tomorrow then he will start with another mass of thanksgiving for this mass, that is a tradition also with canonizations that you give a mass in thanksgiving for these new saints. >> all righty, delia gallagher, we so appreciate you being there
